After watching this excellent run, I have one thing to say: Pork chop sandwiches!

If you use `wget` on it, it'll automatically forward to the download link of the .GZipped file.

I've just made use of that shortcut (using the falling platform to take me through the floor, then holding LEFT to zip through the walls) and managed to shave off over 6 seconds from my previous 'redo' time. Timed exactly perfectly, I was able to zip to just before the lava in the earthquake section (inside the floor to the right of that rock I normally have to break). A pity I wasn't able to zip through the lava and out to the exit - whenever I tried, I'd stop just short of the lava and fall out the bottom of the level. I was able to hexedit my other progress on easily, only losing 20 or so frames due to differently timed level transitions.

Courtesy of Rolken (TSC webmaster): www.soniccenter.org/mike89/HT1.giz (requires Gens+ to play) That's a recording of me completing HT1 in a new TSC record of 45 seconds, and demonstrating a glitch that Rolken found not long ago. It's a shame Quietust is up to Metropolis... could you attempt to hexedit this in?
An interesting shortcut... I'll have to see if it saves me any time.

Maybe it's just me, but it looked like you could've handled some of those shots a lot more quickly than you did. The unusually rerecord count of 197 makes this even more apparent. The run wasn't terribly interesting, either. It's not your fault, though - some games just aren't very well suited for speedruns.

WinUAE has had builtin AVI output for a long time now, and it also supports savestates (though I believe it has some trouble if you're emulating attached hard disk drives). It does not, however, support input recordings.

It might be possible to do with a single controller, though it's highly unlikely (and would be very slow as well).

1. Yes, I am controlling Tails directly in all places where it can result in a speedup. 2. Yes, it requires using the 2nd controller, since Sonic needs to stop at the bottom of the ramp while Tails goes ahead and jumps up to the left. 3. About 13 seconds into the 1st act and 6 frames saved so far.

I'm getting a desynch as well - 2 other cars get smashed, then you fall off the left edge of the track on the recharge strip. I'm using the same plugins listed along with their (mostly) default settings, and my ROM CRC matches - any special video settings required?

It is most certainly possible for Sonic to defeat Robotnik before he launches away - my run is conclusive proof of that. However, it might not be possible to do it using Knuckles, as he can't jump as high - not only would he likely miss the final jump (Sonic needs to jump as high as possible in order to land the final hit before Robotnik takes off), but he might not be able to jump over the [lethal] jetpack flame in the back to land hits as quickly as possible.

I still need to do Metropolis Zone (all 3 acts), followed by Sky Chase (boring autoscroller), Wing Fortress (probably the same route as before), and finally Death Egg (business as usual). I've been busy with other stuff lately, and I'm not particularly looking forward to redoing Metropolis Zone - it was hard enough to get it right for my previous run, considering how long all of the levels are.

Thanks, but I already know about that shortcut - I successfully hex-edited it into my current run about a month ago.

I know that the next version of Quietust's run is going to use a path Knuckles can't copy in Oil Ocean 2. Sonic can only just get the required height at one point by making a frame-perfect jump, before one of the sinking elevators gets any lower to make the required jump height too large to clear.
I'm not quite sure what you're referring to - in my improved Oil Ocean 2 route, all of my maximum-height jumps are there simply for distance (such that the jump start position is optimized so I land in the right place).

My native language is English, since I'm an American. I took 4 years of French in high school, but I haven't used it since. I also know a bit of Japanese.

Watched it, and it is definitely a debug feature - he uses it to skip ALL of the "normal" levels and play only the (extremely boring) boss levels. In addition, the 4th (I think) boss level desynched, though that may have been due to using Turbo (with FCEU 0.98.13, December 4) to fast-forward. In addition, you took damage during the first boss level, even though it did not appear to save you any time. Voting 'no'.

1. Was it absolutely necessary to waste ~2 minutes watching the opening cutscenes and playing around on the titlescreen? 2. The run desynchs near the end of the level - just before the boss, you start colliding with enemies for no good reason, then ALL of your shots miss the boss, and finally you get killed.

The "sm64glitches" run was amusing at the beginning, but quickly got extremely boring after about 10 minutes of invisible-bobomb-carrying.

You expect to get perfect quality with zero rerecords? The menus alone (selecting level/etc.) were extremely slow, and the gameplay wasn't very impressive, either. Also, what's with the ROM website advert in the ZIP file you submitted?

A very impressive run! Now I just have to get up and finish my new Sonic 2 speedrun and everyone will be happy.

Über-Tristram isn't so bad once you've gotten rid of Mephisto - once he's gone, Diablo and Baal are easy to take care of (Baal being significantly easier than Diablo, in my opinion). Duriel is definitely at the top of my list, but one thing that annoys me to no end is that people seem to think Duriel is female - what an insult to the Lord of Pain!

I tried loading that savestate, and it started me at the titlescreen (with Mario's 3D face)...

Er, the only Sonic ROM I'm aware of having multiple revisions is "Sonic Compilation"...

Any chance of you posting a download link for the program EXE only? Or possibly a plain archive instead of a self-extractor? It's been getting rather annoying having to download that huge file (especially when it's through rapidshare and I have to wait 30 seconds for it to START), extract it, rename the EXE (I don't keep the non-rerecord version), copy it on top of the old one, then delete everything else (since nothing else changes between releases)...
