There are officially two (2) weeks left in the contest! Quick reminder that submissions are to be, well, submitted through forum PM or Discord (Samsara#4893). A team is currently in the lead! They have achieved a time! I don't know which team it is or what time it is, but based solely on the nature of how contests work, it must be the case anyway!

I never considered it for human speedruns, but I think I might be able to find a way to get 12 shells out of the second encounter with some TAS shenanigans. Then I would be able to get only 2 shells before dying, cutting off some time. I'll work on it at some point if there's interest.
Quick question: How much time would be saved, and how much time would it take to test the viability of this strategy?

just looked at the rules again. it says "must reach and ending screen" and "it should end with the last input". these seem like contradictory rules.
To be more specific, it's the last input needed for the game to automatically advance to the ending. The ending doesn't need to be reached within the input file, it just needs to be reached with no further input.
my edit was removing my real name from the submission. I thought that was going to be hidden from public view when i was filling out the submission. whatever change you made did not undo that edit.
Alright, cool. Good to know I didn't mess anything up.

Heck, I overwrote your edit when replacing the file and I can't see what changed in your revision. Feel free to edit it back in, I won't be touching the submission text for a while.

I finally had a chance to look into this and... I hate to say it, but a problem immediately jumped out at me. Namely, the boss battles: You bring up the phantom hit glitch in the submission text, but it seems you didn't use it to its full potential in every applicable boss fight. It appears to always be the fastest way to deal damage to bosses. I did some light testing on several bosses with this glitch and was able to save almost 15 seconds across 5 different boss fights (1, 3, 6, 7 and 8), meaning there is still quite a lot more time to be saved over this submission, much more so when factoring in the final two bosses. Given the amount of health they have, it is possible this run could go sub-18. Since syncing is difficult and my tests were everywhere, I've opted to upload a userfile of just my attempt at Sucker Puncher. It's the best example of how effective the phantom hit can be at saving huge amounts of time on bosses, as just this boss alone is nearly 7 seconds faster than in the submission. My input begins around frame 50000: User movie #74102476863902801 410 frames saved. This guy's kind of a pain, he doesn't particularly like to be phantom hit, but it is always possible to do so, it just requires some good positioning and some pattern manipulation. I use normal punches to change what he's going to do next for the most part: Mixing in some normal punches might also help for damage routing on every boss, not just in terms of influencing their pattern, but also helping to get them below 140 health to use a final scream without wasting time on slower attacks. There's also a glitch(?) I found involving grabbing and instantly releasing enemies by pressing X a few frames after initiating a grab. This can help with positioning and pattern manipulation on presumably any boss that can be grabbed. Definitely play around more with this. I'll also include a list of my other improved bosses and some improvement times to (at least) match or (hopefully) beat, along with some notes on what I did or what could be done better in general. These are NOT in the above userfile, but I can provide individual userfiles of these fights if wanted - Boss 1 (Zink): 45 frames saved This avoids using the scream at the beginning of the fight and mostly focuses on phantom hits. There's almost certainly a better strategy than what I did, though. Boss 3 (Lava Boss): 160 frames saved Honestly one of the easiest patterns to deal with in regards to chaining phantom hits. The scream I used to finish the boss is heavily delayed for some reason, I imagine this can be avoided with some fine-tuning to save even more time, but even with the delay there's still a significant improvement. Boss 6 (Frank): 85 frames saved This is honestly something that should have been avoided altogether: You use an extra phantom hit before the scream when the scream alone was enough to kill him. Memory address $13D4 (2 byte, unsigned) is, I believe, the value for the first spawned enemy on-screen, which means it's always the health value for bosses. I'd highly recommend adding this to your RAM watch and keeping track of it for boss fights. Boss 7 (Zink 2): 190 frames saved Same thing as the first stage, just with more health and thus more phantom hits, and thus more time saved. Keep in mind these are all first passes at these bosses: There is absolutely more time that can be saved with better damage routing. The intention here is that all of these times are improved upon further, or at the very least matched. As for the actual stages... The game's pretty janky so it's hard to tell for sure, but they honestly look fine to me. Good enough on their own for a first publication of this game, I'd say. Assuming the game is sync stable, a final pass over each boss with updated strategies should definitely be worthy of publication. As I said, this could possibly be sub-18, perhaps even a low 17:5X with every boss being heavily optimized in damage routing. I do mean each boss as well. I skipped over 2, 4 and 5 because they all looked passable, and the only thing I changed in 6 was the final hit, so it's entirely possible that all of these fights have further improvements of their own. I'm sorry I couldn't get to this earlier (the huge changes to TASvideos have been keeping me either too busy to work on judgements or in dire need of some time to myself), I know it's rough to have put so much time and effort into this run only to be told that once again there's still a lot more time to come off of it, but boss optimization should HOPEFULLY be the final thing that gets this game through.

It's still early and we're still a bit low on submissions, so the deadline has been extended by another month to October 15th. Remember, you're totally allowed to submit any of our published runs even if it isn't yours, as long as you can provide commentary over it! Feel free to submit multiple as well. If you don't want to submit anything yourself, at least spread the word to other people who may be interested so that they can submit.

I started a test run for best ending, actually. I've just been so sidetracked by other projects that I haven't worked on it too much lately, but once I have more spare time I'll try to pick it back up.

Score attack is a planned goal for the future (see this post for more details on the rollout plan), so currently no, but eventually it will be. Having a consistent set of rules for it in advance will definitely help, though! There's already some discussion on the score attack goal in this thread, I'd highly recommend adding to it.

It could obsolete the currently published run, but since it's a playaround, obsoletion comes entirely down to audience opinion. The only way anyone's going to know whether or not that would happen is if it's submitted, though, as that's going to put the most eyes on it and allow the most feedback to come in.

Stars and Newcomer Recs are actively curated lists, yes, but Gruefood Delight is just a wiki page anyone can edit with whatever they want. It was never meant to be an official thing: Heck, it can't even be a tag since nothing in it has been published. Stars and Newcomers are definitely things that need some discussion, though. They're not super high priority, but they will be discussed and figured out during the revamp, for sure.

My question then is, how are the movie rules changing in light of the new class system? If it's not determined yet, is there a way to be part of the conversation in determining the changes?
Updating the movie rules is a separate beast. We're actively planning on doing so, but apart from some terminology updates we're holding off until we get these changes ironed out first. Ideally, we'd like to go through every rule with the community and figure out what's worth keeping and what needs to be changed/removed. It'll be a new thread, so look out for that in the near future.

Added this to the OP but I'm posting it separately to bump the thread: Instead of being expanded, the Vault system has officially been retired as of today! We are moving away from tiers and into just general acceptance and archival, no longer dividing the runs on our site by entertainment value or using it as a metric for judging every single run that comes in. Victory is ours! This thread will now be used to collect and discuss feedback on the implementation of this new system. Implementation is currently still in progress, so any and all feedback is appreciated! We'll be continuing to collect feedback going forward as well, so if I forget to remove this message after several years, feel free to pretend it's still relevant and post your feedback anyway!
I've created pages for the new "standard" class and for the term "class" as well. Feel free to weigh in on them, ask questions, do all of that good good community stuff.

A few things I'd like to add:
    1. "Standard" is not going to be the new official name for Vault, it's just a technical term for the site. There most likely won't be a name at all: Movies aren't going to be "accepted to Standard", they're just going to be accepted in general. 2. We're going to be moving away from using "Tier" to refer to where runs are on the site, as one of the reasons behind our decision to revamp Vault was to remove the stigma that it's "worse" than Moons and Stars. We're currently going with "Class", but are welcoming suggestions. 3. The change to the player point modifier is already in place, anyone with a published Vault run should have a higher score than before. I personally gained like 20 points from it, so this is clearly a positive change. When we finally implement the Tool-Assisted Store, where you can trade in your player points for prizes, I'm going to get an extra spider ring! 4. ACE/Corruption stuff was accidentally excluded from the list in the OP, and I should also also the list in the OP is not the definitive final list for what's acceptable. That's still being worked on in the original proposal thread, so it will continue to expand.
I've also got some things to say on some of the checklist items:
[ ] Create Standard page [ ] Update Moons page [ ] Update Tiers page with new links and documentation
I have drafts for these, once more things are finalized and the relevant changes are made we should be ready to go live with it very soon.
[ ] Move or delete Vault page (may want to keep it for historical purposes)
I would definitely like to keep it for historical purposes, of course with a few edits made to reflect that this is no longer our working system.
[ ] Migrate publications from moons to standard that quality
Good thing I've already set up a tier change thread several years ago! This is going to be a majorly daunting task due to the sheer number of movies that need to be looked through, not to mention that there still may be mistiered movies to begin with. We'll most likely do a manual pass first once the changes are actually in place, but after that we can use the thread for the community to catch anything that might've slipped by.
[ ] Update movie rules
This is already something we're doing! moozooh's been going through and fixing a lot of things, rewording things for conciseness and clarity and removing some outdated rules, so these updates should also be pretty swift once we get everything finalized. I've also been meaning to make a thread for discussing further changes to the rules in general, but that can wait until after we're finished with this.
[ ] Review rejected submissions and unreject potential submissions that now quality under new rules
We've set up a thread for unrejections already, but as I said above (and as that thread says itself), we'll be doing a manual pass first before opening it up to the community.

After conversing on Discord with most of the teams, it seems there is a majority agreement to extend the deadline (or at least "I'm okay with it"), counting myself as well, as I am involved with handling submissions for TASGiving this year and extending the deadline past the submission end date would help me relax as well, even if it does seem like quite a while. Hence, the new official end date for DTC10 is Friday, October 1st, 2021. Mark your calendars! Post pictures of your marked calendars and I will openly wonder why you still use a normal calendar when you have the internet right in front of you!

I'm proud to announce TASGiving 2021, the sure-to-be hit sequel to TASGiving 2020! TASGiving is a TAS-focused charity marathon that benefits NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. This year's event will be running Friday, November 26th (the day after Thanksgiving!) through Sunday, November 28th (three days after Thanksgiving!). The first TASGiving raised over $10,000 for NAMI, and this year we're hoping to do it again! Submissions are currently open, and will be running until October 15th! Submissions are OPEN at: http://s.tasgiving.org/ Join the TASGiving Discord server: http://discord.tasgiving.org/ For TASvideos content, you are not required to only submit your own runs! TASGiving's main focus is on commentary, so if you think you can provide informative, well-rehearsed commentary over one of our published runs, feel free to submit it yourself! Just make sure it's properly attributed (i.e, don't try to take credit for it), and ideally also obtain permission from the original author/s, though that is not required as it may not be possible in some cases. Feel free to submit multiple runs as well! The form allows four runs per person, so don't be shy if you think you can provide that much! Submissions don't have to be limited to normal TASes, either: RTA runs and TAS showcases/exhibitions can also be submitted. We want a good variety of nicely commentated content! Last year was a bit quiet on all fronts, so I'd like for TASvideos to be more involved with this year's event. In addition to being staff for the event, I will be acting as a liaison for both sides, actively updating this thread with new information as soon as it's available as well as taking suggestions and feedback from here back to the staff team. Hopefully I will be able to promote more direct interaction as well, but at the very least I can be the messenger girl. Feel free to chime in on anything you want here! Want to suggest a run but don't want to commentate it yourself? Post away! Have a cool idea for an exhibition/showcase and want to try to make it happen? Post it down! Have a question about the event and want it answered in a timely fashion? Smash that post button! Are you still really upset over the name Taco Fridays because Tuesdays makes more alliterative sense and is still readily available? I know you are, Samsara! You don't have to submit a run to be able to contribute, so don't hold back!

To be honest, the extent of our thought process regarding rule changes like these is simply "hey, we're not actually doing this anymore, let's remove it from the rules and inform people", and everyone agrees and we do it. There's really nothing to debate. There would be a lot of merit in, say, a thread where people can suggest submissions to be re-examined, especially with some of the upcoming planned changes, but I don't really see the point of having a debate thread for what I assume most people would consider common sense updates to the rules.

No recent discussion thread, just staff mutually deciding that the way things used to be done was restrictive and wrong. We've been making quite a few of those decisions lately.
