I feel horrible suggesting this due to the length of the game, but I'm honestly curious: Could you consider running the game again and seeing if you can improve this run? Maybe compare track-by-track and see if you're improving previous times. My gut reaction is that there can be some improvements made, though I don't have any knowledge of the game to be able to confirm that without a lot of proper testing. I've talked with a couple other judges about it and they think it's publishable, but I'd personally recommend giving it another go if you're up for it. Redoing runs once you're done with them is an extremely good habit to get into as a TASer, as you're guaranteed to find improvements over the run you just finished since you can compare to it easily. I should really finish that TASing guide, shouldn't I...

Also I'm not sure about whether or not it's "worthwhile" to publish a game that was made for speedrunning.
The game wasn't made for speedrunning. It was an existing game that was modified to benefit speedrunners, but the game itself wasn't explicitly made for speedrunning.

And there's also the matter of needing to find a game that's publicly available so that AGDQ doesn't get into trouble, and the host of legal issues surrounding that, and you will quickly see why dwangoAC searches for games that /can/ be played at the marathon.
This is the entire reason why I think criticizing the game choice is a little unfair. All licensed games are right out since we'd never in a million years get permission from Nintendo or whoever, so we'd have to turn to homebrew games, and then we'd still need to get in contact with the developers and get their permission to use the game for the event. This wouldn't be a problem for events hosted on the site, but for huge events like GDQs it's sadly limited to a small number of games. EDIT:

Since using a popular existing (and copyrighted) game has legal issues, and using a custom game has entertainment issues, can the idea of a TAS competition be viable after all? Was this a somewhat failed experiment? Can it be made to work somehow?
If we can keep finding games that fit the criteria, it's definitely viable. Streemerz went off without a hitch, and it's certainly not the only game out there that would work, though I think from now on we have to find and confirm something before we even propose the idea to GDQ. As I said, if it was contained to the site, there wouldn't be any rules in regards to legal distribution: Obviously we still can't distribute licensed games, but people can find them super easily on their own after we announce them.

Previous posts of these encodes are making me think otherwise. It's not "hate" to politely ask someone to keep MLP-related content to the MLP thread. Doing that is more sensible, and it actually prevents the thread from derailing into real hate. A lot of viewers can still enjoy these encodes, they just add literally nothing to the discussion at hand when they're posted here.

I think submitting this is fine. It puts it out in public for people to start frame-warring and optimizing, which was going to happen regardless even if this had been a far more optimized submission. The fastest campfire run I know of is 5 seconds faster than this, so perhaps that should be the first goal for the framewar (I'd post it here, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to).

I get that Hetfield did good work with Mega Man this year, and certainly deserves Rookie of the Year, but TASer of the Year as well is too far.
Agreed. Variety is key to me, and 6 TASes of what can be considered the exact same game doesn't exactly scream "variety" to me. Hetfield's proven himself to be an amazing Mega Man TASer (I'm counting the recent RKS runs under Mega Man as well), but that's about it as far as I'm concerned. Also, having longstanding familiarity with the X series as an RTA runner counts against him in my opinion, as I feel any top RTA runner of a game with the patience and motivation can produce a top-tier TAS of said game. What I'd want to see is a more general exhibition of TASing skill applied to a wider variety of games. Which, naturally, is why I followed my nomination and voted arandomgameTASer, due to his incredible variety over the year and for picking very good, super-technical runs without even knowing the game beforehand and still producing high-quality runs. That's what I mean by a "general exhibition of TASing skill": Someone who can theoretically pick up any game no matter how unknown or unexplored it is and produce an amazing TAS from it. That's why I also feel weird about voting for Alyosha, since while his output this year was incredible and fairly varied within the NES library, it wasn't exactly a display of personal skill: It was simply adaptation of previously known tricks plus some optimization along the way. Had he redone every single run from scratch and discovered new things himself, he would've had my vote for sure, but his methodology prevents me from being able to see him as the year's best TASer. They're both great people and great TASers for sure, and they deserve to win in other categories, but in my eyes it takes a lot more to win TASer of the Year, and Random's certainly showed that "a lot more"... well, a lot more than any other listed nominee. Yes I'm aware that I fall under my own metric of what constitutes TASer of the Year. I still think Random's a far better example than I am, though. But don't let that dissuade you from voting for me. *places stack of $100 bills on table next to sign with Nach's name on it*

I don't get it, why has this game been vaulted?
Poor submission votes, plus the previous publication was also in Vault. It can change if the movie rating is high enough, but expecting people to rate Vaulted publications is extremely optimistic, to say the least.

Hi, how is a hit with the flying robo at 5:57 avoided? A similar hit at 5:44 is not avoided, is it? The boy, Scooter looks invisible at that moment for a sec - is here some visual glitch or should it look like that?
If you watch the official TVC encode, it's clear that I take the hit both times. As for my encode, call it a visual glitch on Youtube's part: It only shows every other frame, and since Scooter blinks on and off every frame when he's hit, you'll only see either the frames where he's invisible or the frames where he's visible. Hopefully that explains it!

Am I allowed to reject my Umihara Kawase Shun run's nomination? Despite the run being 100% my input and having a couple original frame-saving strategies, I don't feel like it's enough of my run to warrant me winning an award for it, since all of the main routes and strats were adapted from a Japanese TASer's IL runs on the DS version of the game. If they had an account here, they would have received co-author credit at the time of submission, but as long as that run is fully attributed to me I wouldn't be comfortable at all if it won an award.

Aside from what I posted earlier, I'd like to finish and submit at least 3 runs this year instead of getting into a run and abandoning it for one reason or another, and I'd also like to get a little more involved in the community in general: Talking to more people, hanging out in the IRC maybe, collaborating on runs since DTC5 has been a blast so far, not accusing people of being misogynists or narcissists... Y'know, those sorts of things.
Sweet, I accomplished everything! Except maybe that last one. Shhh. I guess this year is where I'll actually focus on my life: Finding a stable job, staying healthy, preparing for my future... Maybe even going back to college or something after having spent so long being unable to attend classes without anxiety attacks.

[2975] Lynx Blockout by dwangoAC in 03:14.81 It's a Lynx movie that got Moons! That's really good for Lynx!!! Remind me not to drunk-nominate. Blockout was actually a fascinating watch since you could literally hear the luck manipulation happening all throughout, plus the mastery of a difficult (in my opinion) puzzle game is evident and clear in the movie. Unique, fast, fun to watch, and... okay, yeah, a Lynx game in Moons is an extremely rare sight.

[3034] DS Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions "all items" by arandomgameTASer in 34:20.91 Last DS movie of the year and also the best, in my opinion. Super fun to watch all throughout, a clear sense of progression that keeps it fresh and entertaining, and very technically well done with all of the tight movement and sequence breaking.

[2897] NES Super Pitfall by Arc & Alyosha in 04:42.04 Absolutely astounding run that needs more respect, it pushed a nearly unwatchable game to its absolute limit and made it not only watchable, but extremely enjoyable as well, even bringing the game up to what I'd consider a high Moon level from a low Vault level.

arandomgameTASer. Insane, varied output, a lot of really cool technical runs and improvements to his runs from last year that show how far he's come. Plus, anyone who can wrangle DeSMuMe for five runs deserves an insane amount of respect, given that a lot of the runs were long in length and suffered various desyncs all throughout, but his DETERMINATION drove him through to finish each of them! Things like that count for a lot in my book: Not just variety and technical skill, but overall panache and drive as a TASer as well.

Warp, if I may, I'd like to say something on this topic. Once I was promoted to site staff, I did in fact change my attitude greatly from how it used to be. I could even claim that I'm an example that disproves your original post. I'm well aware that I represent the site, now. I'm well aware that I need to be on better behavior at all times. I'm well aware that there are people that disagree with me being where I am. And I am still working to correct all of this. I want nothing more than to help out the site in any way I can. Have I made mistakes? Absolutely. I'm human. We all are. I apologize for making mistakes, in fact. I know that's not enough, which is why I'm also working on my behavior every day. The thread feels weird because you seem to be implying that disrespect is an actual site policy, when the reality is that you may or may not have had one isolated incident with one member of the team, but since you refuse to disrespect their privacy by not posting salient information then we'll never know what actually happened. I think you might have misinterpreted the mod's intentions. I seriously doubt anyone on the team would just PM you insults unprompted. There could be some further context to this. Maybe it was prompted by your behavior in a public thread? Even you admit you're problematic of a poster at times, it wouldn't be unlikely. Are we, as a team, perfect? No. Have we treated people with disrespect? I'm sure we have. We all have our own flaws, for sure. But the point I'm trying to make here is that for someone to logically bring up an argument that we, as a moderation team, are being too hostile towards people, then there has to be accurate evidence for it. If you were truly trying to be reasonable and they kept insulting you, then sure, you have a point here. But that point is that one member of the team needs to treat you better specifically, not that we're all treating everyone bad. This isn't an issue of site policy being wrong, this is an isolated incident, someone acting on their own in one particular case. We're not all like this all the time. Your problem is with the person you were supposedly PMing. It's not the forum's problem with the entire staff, which is what you seem to want it to be. Warp, allow me to be blunt: I don't think the mod team is the problem here. I think you're the one who's contributing more to your problem than any of us are. If you change your attitude and apologize for your actions, both past and present, I'm entirely certain you'll find that people will treat you better. If you stop accusing us of these things, if you stop calling us assholes and dictators and weak-minded idiots, if you start gaining self-awareness and figure out that you might be the reason you're not being treated the way you want, then you'll have a much better time here. For example, there's your comment to me from July, that I brought up earlier in the thread:
Warp wrote:
Congratulations Samsara, you turned a thread made in remembrance of a great person into a pile of trash by acting like a complete asshole. I hope you are happy about yourself and your perceived higher moral ground.
This is something you said, Warp. This is something you said to me in a thread where I was trying to stay reasonable and respectful toward you the entire time while letting you know that you, yourself were doing something disrespectful, something that could have put off a lot of people. And then you turn it around on me, as if I were the problem all along for trying to keep things on-topic and respectful. That's something you did, and yet you claim you're not the one disrespecting anyone. This is just a single example. I could easily provide more, and I'm sure quite a few others can as well. If you keep acting like this, then we can't take this thread seriously. It's the pot calling the kettle black: Someone with a history of aggressive, hostile comments toward other users accusing the mod team of making aggressive, hostile comments toward them. You even admit that your behavior isn't the best. So why not change it? Why not make the effort to turn yourself around and understand people? I was able to do it, and while I may not be completely turned around yet, I'm certainly much better than I used to be. Like I said, maybe if you do work to improve yourself, you'll start seeing this topic differently. But if not, at least wait until you have other examples, specifically public ones. One person does not speak for the rest of the team. As a team, we speak for the site, but as individuals, we speak for ourselves. For anyone else reading this, if you feel like we're being unreasonable as a mod team, please PM the person in particular about it and bring it up in a respectful manner to them, and we will respond in kind and most likely apologize, or at least respectfully explain our decision so we can come to a mutual understanding. Now I need to stop re-writing this post, as it's been literally 4 hours since I started.
