I wrote a guide, which looks good to be a general requirement for DSi Wiki: Bizhawk/NDS#FormatTheDsiNand
I managed to get this submission to sync as-is following the guide above and adding a few extra steps. As EZGames stated, this submission doesn't go through the first time setup for the DSi NAND, instead booting directly to the menu. More specifically, it boots into the menu on the DSi Web Browser icon. If whoever's playing back the movie doesn't have their NAND matching those conditions, the movie will desync. It is possible to replicate the NAND state used in this run by adding a couple additional steps to the guide in the quoted wiki page, though please take note that setting up the NAND in this way will only work for this specific submission as it currently stands:
  • After melonDS shuts down, File > Boot firmware again.
  • Fill the first time setup with whatever settings you want. These are sync settings in BizHawk so they don't need to be anything specific here.
  • When you get to the DSi menu, open the DSi Browser. Tap Yes and let it load in. This sets it to the default app on boot.
  • Close melonDS to save the NAND. You may now use it in BizHawk, and it should be set up to sync this submission.

Having done this, I would recommend that the submission file be replaced with EZGames' resync that goes through the first time setup, both for consistency with the currently published DSi runs and to prevent sync issues down the road. I'll do this as soon as I get permission from theballaam96.

Execution looks good throughout most of the run, but after cross-referencing the RTA WRs for both old and current patches, I noticed both of them have faster Mario fights. I presume the old patch fight is significantly faster due to it being on the old patch with the jankier collision, but the comparable WR's fight is faster because it does end up getting a 2 cycle second phase. Given it's at the very end of the run, I'd suggest looking into that fight a little more. There's a possibility that Ruffle makes a 2 cycle impossible for the TAS as well, it'd be nice to have further confirmation if that's the case. Also, can Mario's pattern be manipulated mid-fight? Even if a 2 cycle is impossible, some heavy manipulation would save an immense amount of time on it, assuming it's possible.

Looking back at the published run and re-understanding what it does, this option makes sense. This is a clear warp, and the published run's screen transitions are all "in order" despite some of them being triggered from the opposite side of the screen.

Note to viewers: There's about 10 minutes of blank input at the end of the submission file to account for the credits. Keep in mind the actual input length should be 45:18.15, assuming I found the correct final frame of input.

I'm not quite sure this is a GEG. GEG tends to be quite literal in its name: The run uses a glitch that ends the game, calling it in an unnatural way compared to how the game intended players to reach it. This run still triggers the ending in the intended way by collecting the diamond, it just cuts out a couple dozen seconds of walking. This qualifies more as a major skip to me, and given the published run already uses OoB movement to skip screens, that puts both runs in an interesting spot where they're closer to competing with each other in the major skip branch than being considered separate. Classic case of "I could watch the TAS thousands of times over in the time it takes to figure out what to do with it".

User movie #638060527929644061 Abandoned John improvement, because I really hecked up subweapon management. Probably 90-100 frames of movement optimization in there, although not all of that can be salvaged since some of it requires subweapon usage. Anyone looking to work from this: Don't deviate from the published run's subweapon usage and crystal collection, or at the very least study it much better than I did. Also, please find a way to bring back the (at least) 16 frames lost to the Stage 1 boss. I miss them.

User movie #638059686036572465 Took off another 30ish frames from various rooms. I also extended the ending input to end the game 1 frame sooner. Mind taking a second look at this?

What happened at 1:09 where you transition left and end up on the left side of a room, pick up a powerup then leave instantly?
I think it has to do with when the game updates your position on screen transitions. There's a blink-and-you-miss-it moment slightly earlier on where we die on a bullet, and then die again on the same bullet as the screen fades out, because the position of the bullet happens to line up perfectly with the position of the checkpoint we respawn at: Worth noting that the pickup doesn't get collected unless you leave the room instantly, as well. ...also um i'm sorry it happened again User movie #638058834567883521

I forgot that the original submission was cancelled once the time had been cut down to 3:13.91, and here we are with over 30 more seconds of time cuts. The game's a lovely combination of having a lot to play with while having no RNG or global timers to speak of, meaning all improvements are kept and require only slight amounts of effort to resync. If you're a huge fan of people posting userfiles, the game thread is a perfect showcase of just how much was found and how fast it was all able to be implemented and optimized.

In that case, my idea does not work. Unless someone else can find some other spots for improvement, I, too, think this is ready for resubmission
I tested a lot of different places where double jumping could save time, and I think in nearly every case the positioning just wasn't right. Resubmission should be on you. My hands are off the run and Alyosha's moved back to GB resyncs, just need to see if Axe has anything left to add and we'll be golden.

I couldn't find any more improvements either but just in case: is it known what allows for a double jump to happen? I've got an idea that may save some time
It's catching the very edge of a corner during a jump so that the game sets the flag for you being on the ground ($038B = 0) while you're still airborne. It's limited in that you're not always in the right position to be able to make that happen, and as soon as you start descending from the jump the game will consider you airborne again.

I've also learned that I should tell TASers about every little thing/weird behavior I encounter. I've had both the fast drop and double jump happen on accident several times. Next time/game!
Absolutely! It's a mutually beneficial relationship. 638054419804613165 - One more wait removed near the very beginning, using a double jump, and a small improvement later on using a squishy dash instead of a normal dash to affect hitboxes. Not sure where else to go from here, honestly. I don't think I'll be touching this again unless something jumps out at me. EDIT: User movie #638054521435456416 - Improved ruby 4 by finding a way to maintain zip while collecting it, leading to a faster death.
