Progress has been delayed due to several new improvements. The submission might not be up until mid to late April or even early May, as we have to basically redo the entire run from scratch to properly implement everything and to make sure we haven't missed any other possible improvements. It's a little frustrating, but I'd rather it be now than after submission.

There's a very high chance we'll have the run on the Workbench before April, so...

Here's a special tip, straight from someone with experience: If your submission text contains a known improvement, don't submit it. Implement the improvement. There's really no reason not to implement known improvements if you're only taking a few days to knock these out, and I sincerely and seriously doubt these are taking longer than a week a piece. So just... Do more work. Put in more than the minimal amount of effort. Otherwise, you're going to be banned from submitting like so many others before you.

So why would anyone watch your video over a video made by someone with a lot more experience? Why are 3 minutes of a 10 minute video dedicated to how to download the emulator? Why should we appreciate your "effort"? Was this really hard to make? What's going to happen when you start getting into the more complicated aspects of TASing? Do you even know the more complicated aspects enough to teach people about them? I appreciate that you're trying to help newbies, but I really don't think you're qualified for it at the moment.

It's a more colloquial use of the word rather than the, well... other meaning. It's being used in the context of "over-excessive praise".

Let's think about co-authorship credit this way: Which is the more morally "correct" choice to make? Give Credit: A lot of people are already calling for it. It's something that makes sense in terms of this movie and the published run given the incredibly similar content. The only person that might be "harmed" by this decision is adelikat himself, and as far as I can tell the only "harm" that would come from this is him not getting as many player points. Don't Give Credit: This is the more "logical" choice given that Phil's input doesn't actually appear in the movie, but in my opinion that just means we need to take a look at the rules for co-authorship and make some changes to them accordingly. This seems like a narcissistic choice if anything, as Phil's run wasn't surpassed in any way, shape or form aside from this run having an extra stage. Phil's strategies and optimizations were still used in this run. This choice essentially robs Phil of his record that wasn't even beaten and would likely make some people lose their respect for adelikat and/or whoever ultimately makes the decision for obsoletion. These are just my admittedly biased thoughts. Take them as you will, but I do agree that Phil should get credit if his movie is obsoleted. If anything, I think there isn't enough co-author credit on the site. I always appreciate runs like the new Final Fantasy glitched run that credit people for things other than providing actual controller input, even if that amount of "input" is minimal. There's something more... realistic about it, I suppose. None of my runs would have existed if it weren't for the work done by runners (both TASers and RTA) before me, and looking back I feel bad not crediting them for how much they contributed to my runs, even if it wasn't active contribution by the authors. Sure, maybe it's a bit overkill to credit EVERY idea ever given to you*, as the co-authorship lists would get ridiculously long, but I feel like ideas that make up the core of a run should have some credit attached to them. As for the matter of obsoletion itself... I can't say for sure whether I'm for or against it. There's too much weirdness surrounding the ROM and game in general that makes me think it's different enough for a different publication, but at the same time I feel it'd be redundant to have both runs published when this one does everything the published run does and more. *this mentality is the only thing keeping me from whining more about metal force

I'm pretty sure most (if not all) of the people still using FCEUX, myself included, are only using it because of the far more functional TAS Editor. It may be the only advantage over BizHawk currently, but to a lot of people it's a huge one. If you want to start an NES run now or very soon, I'd actually suggest starting in FCEUX and seeing if you like TAS Editor. If you do, then you can get used to it there and easily make the switch over to BizHawk in the future once TAStudio gets out of beta. If you're not too fond of TAS Editor, then BizHawk is the way to go from the beginning. In short: You'll always end up on BizHawk in the end. It's more accurate, it's still being worked on daily, and it'll eventually have the same functionality as FCEUX, except more fleshed out and not specific to one console.

",it will remain the same for a lot "record worthy" content. All the movies are clear technical achievements which won't be found on the main page and that's thanks to people who don't speak up." The other games weren't even board games, like Virtual Bart.
Virtual Bart was cancelled, meaning only the author (who I don't believe has been around for years) can decide whether or not they want to uncancel it. Same with Puzzle Bobble. Star Control 2 has sync issues because of how it was made. This was a board game. Each time you posted, you clearly showed you didn't bother reading up on the rules of the Vault, which is amazing considering you're practically in love with it. This isn't about whether or not these games can be published, and this isn't the proper place to talk about whether or not some of these games can be published. Hell, I even agree that there's a place for some of these runs. But you have to understand that it doesn't exactly help you or these runs when you blatantly disregard the rules and call people names for trying to correct you.

Aw, what adorable pet names! It's almost like you thought about them for more than half a second! You don't need him to tell you whether or not he would submit: The answer is no, because the Vault doesn't accept board games. This has, somehow, been posted several times now on the same page and yet you're still asking! What do we need to do to get you to listen? Do I have to degrade myself by ending each of my sentences with some Twitch loser's ugly face? It's fine if you want to dredge up some old rejected movies to get people to consider them for the Vault, but you have to understand that there are clear reasons behind why they were rejected in the first place. It doesn't take long to look through a thread and figure out whether or not a run can be Vault-worthy, so just... Do that. Please.

Does it need to be console verified to show at a *GDQ, though? Or I guess more specifically, is console verification a personal preference for the presenters or is it actually a requirement set by *GDQ officials? I'd love to see this played at a *GDQ but given how spotty console verification is even for the systems where it works well... As for the run itself? Voted yes, and echoing the Star sentiment. It's a really high quality run that shows off what a TAS can do compared to even the best of the best unassisted runs.

grassini, before asking for runs to be unrejected for Vault consideration, please read the Vault rules to see if it's eligible. In this case, it isn't, as the Vault does not accept board games. Also for the other gruefood runs you recently bumped with similar demands, be sure to read the submission threads to see why it may be rejected or cancelled. (We don't revive cancelled runs, those are up to the author to uncancel).

I think the real basic secret of TASing is your mindset going into it. Thoughts are what ultimately lead to actions, so thinking the right things will eventually lead to solid publication-worthy TASes. The way I've been looking at TASing recently has been something like this:
    1. My first attempt is never good enough. 2. There's always a faster way, I just need to find it. 3. My knowledge is just as important as anyone else's. 4. Each screen is its own game.
1. No matter what it is, if it's a brand new movie for a game not on the site or an improvement to an existing movie, even if it's an improvement to your own existing movie, you'll always be able to improve your first attempt. You'll honestly be surprised at how much you can improve your first attempt when you attempt to improve it. The key is that with each attempt, you learn more and more. It's like learning any other skill: You never start off being the best, but each time you try you do it a little better. You run through a stage for the first time, it's not perfect. You try it again and you start thinking "Okay, I think there's a jump coming up? I should prepare for that." You try it a third time and start thinking "Maybe I could land earlier after that jump and set up for a second jump to bypass that slope?" Eventually, you get so familiar with the section that you can start planning long in advance. That's when you know it's safer to move on. 2. This is about testing. Lots and lots of testing. Test every route, every decision, every frame, and when you think you've found the best one, keep testing to see if there's something better. This also applies to constantly watching and re-watching your run every step of the way. Ever since DTC5 I've gotten into the habit of watching my progress a run I'm working on every single time I start working on it again, and I'll often think "I can probably do that faster" and most of the time I'm right. 3. I tend to go into my first run of a game "blind". I don't look up speed tricks or information until I'm finished with a test run and start working on something I may want to submit. There are a couple reasons for this, one being that I just like discovering things on my own. It's a really nice motivation boost, something that keeps me going in those moments where I think I'm making no progress. "Hey, you found this glitch and the world has to see it!" or "Hey, this looks awesome, you gotta keep going!" are thoughts that go through my head a lot. Second reason is because when I've looked up information before starting a run, I overlooked things that I should have tested, assuming that the information laid out before me is all I needed to know. Moon Crystal comes to mind almost immediately: My initial improvement was just optimization and lag reduction, and Hotarubi's currently published run included a lot of strategy and route changes I hadn't even considered. To put it more simply: The less I know about a game, the more I end up discovering by the time I've finished. I only look up information when I don't think there's any more information left for me to gather on my own. 4. This is sort of related to point 1, but my method has always been about setting benchmarks and trying to beat them. This is more or less how I approach each screen: "I did this section in 1000 frames. Let's see if I can do it faster." "Okay, now I did it in 995 frames. I'll try a different route this time." "Okay, that route was 996 frames. Maybe a second look would be beneficial...?" "Yep, it's down to 992 frames now, but looking back I think I did this a little slow..." "Interesting. I did the first half of this section in 465 frames in this last attempt, but 460 frames in the first attempt. Where did I go wrong?" "Ah, okay. So maybe the first route is faster? I'll try it again..." "Aha! It is faster!" TASing is like any "real" long-term goal, almost like losing weight. You have to treat it as a series of small goals instead of a single large goal. You shouldn't go into a TAS thinking "Okay, I just started this, I have to get through 30 minutes of game." You should sit down and think "Okay, I just started this, I have to get through 1 minute of Stage 1." Small victories are motivating, and you'll always get to the large victory at the end regardless, so why not keep yourself motivated along the way? I apologize for the lengthy post. I probably think about TASing more than I actually sit down and work on one. Note that this is just how I think about things and that these points aren't exactly guaranteed to help, but I'd recommend at least keeping them in mind if you're new to the hobby and looking to improve.
