I'd like to keep looking into something brought up in the publication thread:

2) Assembling the Iron Sword skip - there's a way to skip the message half way through the song... although I've never been able to do it consistently and could never do it on my real runs. Maybe a button needs to be pressed on a certain frame? Anyways, there's an alternate consistent way of doing it, but you need to have a spell with you, so that's not relevant here.
deg222 wrote:
But as far as the Iron Sword skip, I felt like holding a direction before hand made a difference? I'm not sure, it never felt consistent.
This would be a solid 3-4 seconds of improvement if it's possible to get without the use of a spell, but it might still be an improvement regardless. The fact that holding a direction apparently makes a difference makes me believe that it's RNG-based, though given my limited knowledge of the game I wouldn't know where to start with that. I tried brute-forcing it by just holding up for varying lengths of time, but wasn't able to get anywhere with it. How exactly does the spell system work? If there's another easily obtainable key along the route, could you figuratively pick up Fleet Foot, use it somewhere to save time, then use it further to open the magic menu and allow for the song skip? Or does the spell actually disappear and leave you with no magic?

Definite yes vote! I've been silently following the WIPs and they've all been amazing to watch.

You might be thinking of Time Hollow, unless this game has that mechanic as well... If it does, then it'd have to be NG+.

Ah, I knew that me not fully understanding Japanese would cause a divide, here. I mean no disrespect to that TASer or to the TAS itself. For what it's worth, that TAS is extremely well-done given its limitations and different goals. The later battles are insanely fast even without things like the Eternal Sphere and Meteor Ring, especially since it was done on Universe. I had some doubt toward it being "serious" due to the in-game time and Ashton's recruitment, but it still convinced me it was at least somewhat intended to be a planning video. The strategies between my eventual TAS and the Nico TAS will differ greatly anyway due to the difficulty, so I shouldn't have been so critical over their choices, especially since I misunderstood the TASer's intent. I apologize. I'll keep that in mind for my future analysis posts. As for the emulator problems, those should all be solved once BizHawk 2.0 is released with the Octoshock core. The first thing I'll be doing upon its release is verifying that completing the game is possible with no problems. After that, I'll begin the TAS proper.

I haven't had any luck working out the song skip. If holding a direction makes it work occasionally, it might actually be RNG-based. No idea why it would be like that, but that would explain a lot. I did manage to leave the room/activate the Ironsword cutscene 2 frames earlier, though, so that's another minor improvement to work in if there's a V3 movie to be made.

We were using it extensively, so add us to the pile. The submission files were just exported to FM2 for convenience's sake.

EDIT: Beaten to it. I shouldn't take so long to post. That other improvement with skipping the song may be worth looking into further, though. EDIT2: It can't be an input thing, as it's all lag frames, so it'd have to be something done beforehand...

How do you guys feel about using lsnes for DTC6?
I suppose it'd be an excuse to learn the emulator... I don't think it should be strictly required, though, if only because lsnes isn't exactly the most user-friendly emulator out there. DTC5 was the first TAS for a lot of the entrants, and I suspect DTC6 may be the same, so it'd probably be a good idea to keep the emulator choice open. Not to say I wouldn't be opposed if it were put into place, but I'd recommend deciding on that ASAP to give people as long as possible to learn lsnes before jumping into a competition with people who are far more used to it.

Are people interesting in having it sooner or later? Meaning, are you guys burned out from DTC5, want to try to work on other stuff, school is busy right now, etc?
DTC5 was actually a huge motivation boost for me to work on other projects. The only burnout I'm suffering is on Metal Force itself, so I'd be interested in having it sooner rather than later.

I don't think the amount of input you have or don't have in your final file should determine whether or not you get credited. If it went purely by that, then I'd pretty much be the only one credited on my team, and that wouldn't be true in the slightest. We had a bit of an odd team dynamic, but it ended up being really strong regardless: Our schedules rarely matched up so we never actually had the opportunity to work something out "live", but we posted information and improvements and WIPs to a Google Doc so that when the others were around, they could take a look and comment. I did nearly all the work on the final file, with maybe a second or two of input being Alyosha's once I suffered the inevitable burnout near the end of January... But there's no doubt in my mind that they contributed way more than I did in terms of pure polish and optimization. The input may be mine, but the strategy and execution mostly came from them, and the file is over 30 seconds faster than it would've been because of that. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you contributed to the file in any way, whether it be actual input or merely talking about improvements, then you deserve credit regardless. I only have one question: When's DTC6?

I've been considering it for a while, actually. I even did a bit of testing yesterday... and honestly, it seems like a huge undertaking. It'd be amazing to get a solid group together to see what we can do with both of the published runs, as I suspect there are improvements in even the any% run given how complex the game is.

I don't understand how you can find so many no-effort runs submitted within a week of each other to be any entertaining or indicative of what this site is about, but to each their own, I suppose. Literally anyone can just pick a horrible, boring game, knock out a complete run within an hour (most likely less), and submit it with really no consequences. Assuming it gets published, no one's going to bother improving it since there's really no good reason to when you could be working on something people will actually somewhat enjoy. This is either the definition of getting what you want through the least amount of work possible, or the definition of how to exploit the system in your favor. This would be much more tolerable if the submissions were spaced out and it felt like any amount of effort was put into them, and if there were some actually entertaining games to break up the monotony, but as it stands right now people are starting to get sick of it.

Casually going to edit a temp encode into this post in a couple hours. EDIT: 60fps processed (only on the actual Youtube page, as usual now available in the player module with recent bbcobe updates!). Link to video

What about Samsara?
I don't think any of my input remains, so my technically my only contribution in this file is just having pushed rchokler to optimize his work further. Not enough for co-author credit in my opinion, but in all honesty I can't say I wouldn't be happy if it happened.

I won't talk about the money stuff but you sound like an asshole here. TASing isn't about being the best one in the world, if you want all the rewards then re-do the whole TAS yourself.
Considering he may have been screwed out of thousands of US dollars*, I'd say he has every right to "sound like an asshole". *Assuming sonicpacker's statement is 100% true: US minimum wage is $7.25, assuming 8 hour workdays that's roughly $58 a day. Assuming 5 days per work week, that's $290 a week. Assuming 6 months (roughly 26 weeks), that's $7540, which means ALAKTORN should have gotten at least $3770.

And regarding that TAS of Diddy Kong Racing, the problem there was not the category itself, but the author refusing to provide a verfication movie that generates the SRAM.
The problem was partially with the category. Runs like that are basically no different than just starting a new game, then loading a file from just before the final boss, then claiming that's a legit any% record since you started from new game and got to the credits. The verification movie not being provided was just another layer on the delicious drama cake that was that run. I'm really looking forward to this run and the new Banjo-Kazooie run! The amount of stuff found since the first BK TAS is mind-blowing and I can't wait for all the (double console-verified) stuff to be put into action.

Reminder that this TAS is completely obsolete and has been since its inception because the TASers wanted to be epic and use the key. The RTA record is faster than the fastest Richter TAS.
In RTA timing, the TAS is sub-20 minutes. TASes and RTA runs are not timed the same way, as TASes are always timed from power on to the last input needed to finish the game, while this particular RTA is timed from taking control of Richter. In the RTA WR, Richter begins moving at roughly 35 seconds and the final orb is collected at roughly 22:20. Roughly 21:45. In the TAS encode, Richter begins moving at roughly 3:44 and the orb is collected at 23:33. Roughly 19:49. So that's an insanely egotistical way to be completely wrong. Congratulations!
