ThunderAxe31 and I have just begun work on this TAS. Here's the wip for MUGG to join in on the fun http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/44030952697828135 -Edit- MUGG is already proving himself, and he isn't even here, yet. Just read his post (from 10 years ago) about being able to hold the flying kick all the way to the ground. Time saved :)

aaand here's world 4! I noticed after finishing the boss of this world, that you can actually select the "go to next world" on the map screen one frame sooner than I had been.
I assume you mean going from world 3 to world 4 and not world 4 to world 5.

So I tried to copy/paste all my inputs back one frame per world to make up for that...
Not sure what emulator you're using, but it seems odd (and a lot of extra work) that you have to copy/paste your inputs to to adjust for a single frame. Deleting the blank frame should shift everything back automatically.

but when I did that, despite the Davy Bones fight starting 2 frames sooner, and still killing him in exactly the same way, I collected the medal 6 frames later. Anyone have any ideas why this might happen?
So there was absolutely zero change to your inputs outside of shifting everything back a total of 3 frames? It sounds like the loading time is taking an extra 6 frames to go from the end of the boss to the overworld. You need to check the exact frame count from the beginning of the fight to the final hit, the frame count from the final hit on the boss to the beginning of the screen fade-out, and the frame count of the loading time, and the frame count from going to the overworld to getting the medal. Those extra 6 frames have to come from somewhere and looking at each small chunk will help you identify what's taking longer. Also, at the 9 minute mark you grab onto the grid and just hang there for a second. Is that RNG manipulation?

Found a 77 frame improvement and uploaded to wip section. I was able to beat the final boss by finding two opportunities to hit him earlier. This saved 49 frames. The other 28 frames are from reduced lag by not doing the jumping-during-dialogue glitch at the end. This is solely because I wasn't able to get it to work again, but at least this means the tas no longer contains any speed vs. entertainment trade-offs. Updated submission text with new youtube video and some table and text changes.

Voting No. According to Spikestuff's links this run was doomed from the start, but I still feel like this run couldn't have stood up on its own merit. There is only a fraction of the entertainment found in other SMB3 runs, and you managed to stretch it out over five hours (none of which is optimized for speed, which is also part of the entertaiment). It seems like it would be a fun puzzle for the true SMB3 TASing fans. Better luck next time!

Certainly an entertaining run until it starts to repeat itself. A solid 'Meh' vote from me. I also like that you aim for real time, and as such I think this is the run that should be published. I've never understood in-game time as a goal choice.

There's a program in the U.S. called Big Brother Big Sisters, and I'm wondering if there's a similar program in your country. It's about being a mentor to at-risk or underpriviledged kids ages 6-17. You spend one or two days a week one-on-one with a child and just hang out (go to park, movies, events, etc...) and being a good role model.

I apologize if you think any of these comments are meant a jabs at you or your work. They are not. No one was ever expecting you to do prince mode since you mentioned in your submission that you will never play this game again, so that's why it's so awkward that you keep mentioning it. It's assumed that people who post a new TAS are somewhat familiar with the process, because it's laid out in every submission. I learned a lot of how everything works by reading the discussion page on several of the published TASes as well as looking at some of the cancelled TASes to see what they did wrong. You get a good idea of what good submission notes look like as well as common questions that come up.

It's an unlisted video... so there isn't any harm being done. Also, you didn't have to do 3 posts in all that, you could've just directed all the answers/statements/queries in a single one.
why is it such an importance to people on this website that everything i type is neatly organized in one post? i wasn't saying any harm was being done i was legit asking if he made that tas im new here dont know how stuff works im only here because this is where people post their tas its becoming very obvious thats all i'll be doing here not going to spend much more time in these threads lol not much fun when people constantly telling you what to do without being supportive in any way do what yall want with this tas just a reminder that prince mode will never be made that is the only point i've been trying to make and i would still love for someone to prove me wrong and make the prince mode tas
You've mentioned 4 times throughout all these posts that you'll never do prince mode. Once is enough, and it was never brought up. Feos made a temporary encode of your TAS. He didn't make a new one and post it here. This is so that other people can watch your work without having to download the file and run it in their emulator, if they even have one as well as the rom. People get notified whenever a post is made, so we try to complete all of our thoughts in one post instead of treating the forums like a chat room.

With how giant the shield is you have to be very far away from the bullets in order to really 'dodge' them. In his Gradius TAS he had maxed out speed upgrades and companions that followed in his wake to make such human-defying stunts a real pleasure to watch. The Ikaruga run allows for no such enhancements, and it's twice the length. I would be so bored watching nothing happen for the 25 minutes it would take to complete the run since you'd also be waiting out every boss. As for no new gameplay I mean that the current run already shows tight bullet dodging and the most interesting boss to (nearly) time out on is the final boss, which it does. None of the other bosses do anything interesting when waiting on them.

Hi! I am a huge fan of [2836] GC Ikaruga "2 players, maximum score" by keylie in 21:29.40, and watching it got me to thinking: "What about a Minimum Score, No Deaths run?" It would require no shooting and dodging as many bullets as possible, because absorbing bullets gives you points. It would also be a great TAS category, encouraging runners to find innovative strategies to get lower scores in order to obsolete previous runs.
I love shmup TASes, but this seems like it would be very boring to watch. The ship would spend most of its time in the corner or just following all of the safe paths. There would be no new or innovative gameplay.

If speedrunning is a factor, every movement from the arwing adds up to lose time, meaning as little movement as possible would be to prefer.
So I am currently trying to find out the best boosting pattern for a speedrun...
I truly enjoy Starfox 64 and will be eagerly anticipating this run, but I certainly don't know all of the mechanics of this game which leads me to my novice question; why wouldn't you just hold down the boost button from the time the level started to the time you get to the boss and all the while flying in the straightest possible line?

Well, I can't seem to find any reference on this site for save files being split, so my biggest question is... why?

Thanks for the encode, Hetfield. This looks like a fine first run of the game, good job. There just seem to be several areas throughout the run that look like minor optimizations are possible. Voting Meh.

This movie only beats Baxter's by 0.3 seconds. It looks like a sub-optimal strategy is being used in this run; mainly that all the single and double line clears are eating into your time to drop more blocks. I'm also a little hazy on the reason for PAL vs. US version. Since the only difference is the left and right scroll speed (which is negated by simply tapping left and right), why not use the US version just to save the confusion? On a related note, do the blocks at least descend faster in the PAL version while holding down?

Interesting. The pauses definitely interfered with my enjoyment of the run, but I guess that's the price for speed. My main question is about where you see this movie fitting in. Are you trying to obsolete Baxter's current run of this game (http://tasvideos.org/1633S.html) even though it has the extra goal of clearing all blocks, or are you looking to create a separate branch for fastest completion?

Aww, my first Vaulting. I think I can make it Moons tier, but it'll take some intense optimization to make another worthwhile submission before I can focus on the entertainment aspects. I've already started my next project, though, so it'll be awhile.

So... I looked at jmosx36's profile (http://tasvideos.org/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=7390) and am not sure how to explain how this submission came to be. It says he hasn't been online since February, and that he has no submissions. Is this the ghost of jmos completing all of his earthly business?

I am somewhat curious about the minigames mentioned on the main menu, though. What are they like? Could someone make an entertaining TAS out of them?
There are 2 mini-games. One of them is an autoscroller where you jump over or duck under obstacles while staying ahead of a speeding train. The other is about defeating a fire-breathing dinosaur by blowing bubble gum bubbles into it's mouth. Neither of them are fast-paced, and beating one of them sends you straight into the main game without being able to play the other until you get sent back to the main screen (which looks like it also happens after level 3; I'll update the submission text).

People really need to learn how to end input
It's not intuitive. I know from personal experience that it seems like the site wouldn't count any input after the last button press since it's all empty, but it's only when someone points it out that we learn otherwise. I see you mentioning this quite often; to the point that it seems worth putting a reminder on the submission page or in the submission guide. As for the movie, it could be entertaining if it only lasted 20 minutes, but at 2 hours I'm voting No. I have a whole slew of questions, though I'll limit it to three in case you update your submission text. They are all based on the first track, but it seems to apply for several of the others that I watched. 1. Why do you go out of your way to always get to the middle of the road? Especially for the turns it seems like it would be faster to start them on the inside of the road. 2. Why do you turn into the repair zone in the last couple of laps? It seems like a waste of time since you never drop below half health, or does a tiny course correction like that not lose any frames? 3. In the final lap why do you not use your boost earlier? Your max speed appears to be 301 km/h so any amount of time on the track spent going faster than that saves time, but you waste half of your boost time by finishing at 357 km/h.

Just uploaded an improved submission to the WIP section as hidden. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/32908222746509546 This is a several second improvement due to a better strategy on the second boss (and the repeat of the boss later on). This did cause some poor RNG over the next couple of levels. A temp encode is on the way. Done. I wasn't able to save any time with the spike glitch, but I'll still add it to the submission text.
