Well this is what prompted my question about savestates before :) It's saving a savestate every frame. It's strange, it ran really smoothly for a while but now it's always sort of choppy for me. I'm going to play around with it. Thanks again for the iup intro.

Yeah that drawbox was there to hide flickering in SM, you can probably take it out. And yes, now that you mention it some of that did look like Python indentation ;) You don't *have* to do it any particular way, it's just nice to have consistent visual clues. Have fun!

Hi dwangoac, nice first script! If you don't want to use your personal webspace, you can use http://lua.pastey.net/ to post Lua scripts. My first comment about your code would use of indentation to ease readability. I hope you don't mind, but I reformatted and posted your code here: http://lua.pastey.net/96606-1v09 It looks good on the whole though, and works well. Keep posting stuff for us! :)

I made a sort of proof of concept script that allows for rewinding -- it's very hoggy though and makes the emulator slow sometimes for me: http://aldentas.googlepages.com/rewindgui.lua What makes the GUI nice is that arbitrary rewinding will now work on replaying movies -- a big feature missing from watching runs with emulator files right now. qFox or anyone else smart, feel free to point out anything silly I've done :)

Well if you get a cheap one, prepare for it to break... I have a basic NetGear one that's worked fine for me, hardly ever have to reset it. LinkSys ones have worked well for me as well, but I've hear bad things about both these brands from other people so maybe it's luck of the draw :)

Also, have you found the iup capabilities of Lua yet Xkeeper? That allows you to spawn new windows, create a GUI and I think even a canvas to paint on.
Can you point me in the right direction? That sounds, um, awesome.

Wow Xkeeper, you should post that script. What game is that?

A question about Lua... when I load an "anonymous" savestate it says something like "State snlua100 loaded" Is there a file associated with this "snlua100"?

Edit: gah, wrong forum. But cheers again for this great emulator -- I just keep finding new cool stuff like the lag counter, and it ASKING ME TO SAVE MY MEMORY WATCHES which I stupidly lost so many times before :)

Aqfaq: I love it too. I think "Genesis Games Without Water" would be a funny, random thing to list. I feel a bit slow that I didn't get the water thing though :) arkiandruski: I think I fixed the missing game. Also, I'm glad you pointed out one of the more obvious games for me... That's why I don't want to use the existing tag system :) It's subjective so I don't plan on shoving it down anyone's throat.

22% is actually pretty low... for example, Mega Man has ~55% frames with no input (though I counted "by hand" so maybe bkDJ can confirm ^_^)

Hmm, Monopoly would be a good one for that too :) and Vegas Stakes Here's another one people probably won't like: movies that look very fast -- some sonic game, biker mice from mars, sparkster... hmm

Edit: referring to Boss's comments... No argument from over here, as long as judges remain open to considering new goals (which I'm not worrying about) And I'll repeat my comment about un-useful discourse (not directed at this thread for the most part), though there's really no way to control that beyond me haranguing people about it.

This is true for people who don't care about whether or not their movie will be published. If one does really care, it can be misleading to encourage him too much to work on a possibly very long project that's likely to be rejected. I don't think there is anything wrong with people giving their opinion about it. You might be right that something "might turn out great"... but for this someone can always post wips... and someone who really thinks their idea is great (even though it's arbitrary) would definately be willing to make a wip. If the reaction to such a wip however is also negative, the only reason why one should continue working on it is really not caring about whether or not it's gonna be published.
All true. I'm not even sure I'm disagreeing with you -- just trying to stress that I think people trying new things is desirable, and that curt knee-jerk comments like "This is stupid" don't really serve any purpose.

... I think the recent OoT is a good example. The rules are quite arbitrary... but a new any% run will pretty much skip everything, and a 100% run will have lots and lots of extra boring stuff (probably).
And if I recall correctly, the author was hesitant to even consider submitting it. Had he not been so interested in just doing it, it might never have been considered. And you can see I thought pretty much the same as you regarding the LoZ run -- it probably wouldn't add much -- but maybe it would be interesting... I guess it comes down to encouraging people to ignore criticism and make movies that they themselves like.

I think we should just keep doing what we've been doing: players submit movies, and if they are liked, regardless of the arbitrary rules imposed, we vote on them and publish them, and if not, we throw them out.
It's just unfortunate that the prevailing attitude is against using said arbitrary rules, which seems to discourage people from even attempting to make movies with unique goals. Oh, and Ramzi pretty much suggested a run like this for LoZ the other day: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7237

Take that back Ferret! U R WRONG Derakon: Those are pretty on the nose, thank you! eternaljwh: Thanks for finding that for me, I knew it was somewhere obvious. Some of the categories are kind of interesting, like Contains speed/entertainment tradeoffs (22) and One player controls two characters (35), but most are too broad (Takes damage to save time (309)) or too specific (Does not use a restart sequence (1)) to be interesting as lists in themselves (though the tags are descriptive and useful for describing the movies individually). I'm going to throw on the two Link's Adventure glitch runs and Wizards and Warriors reuse levels (maybe), so I have so far: King's Bounty (the epitome of this "genre") A Link to the Past Pokemon Green and Yellow Mario 64 Might and Magic "Warped" Arkanoid "Glitched" Legend of Zelda 2 "Any%" Metroid Monopoly "Warp glitch" Rygar Link's Adventure glitch runs Wizards and Warriors reuse levels Edit: Duh, A Boy and His Blob
