Here's the old thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=888 I think it's amusing that the thread ends with someone saying R-Type 3 would be a better choice, but the thread for R-Type 3 says Super R-Type is better :P

There's no "automagic" way to display hit boxes in any emulator -- in fact, the "hit box" is not usually directly stored as one "object" in the game's RAM, but rather is generally a collection of values for the various "sides" of it. Even when you do find the info in RAM, there's no built in way of drawing to the screen in VBA (yet! Lua please somebody? or tell me how to do it myself :P ?) But, you could use memory watch to monitor the hit boxes. Here's a page about memory watch with some hints on how to get started (it's not a full fledged tutorial...yet): http://tasvideos.org/MemorySearch.html

Maybe improvements of under a certain amount could be marked as "minor" improvements? Believe me, I do know what you're talking about... On the other hand, a set number of frames/percentage improvement doesn't always work. For example, the new SMB movie was <5% improvement (and well below 15 seconds) but contained a revelatory new glitch. As far as seeing new games, this seems to be a growing problem as the site grows (as has been stated elsewhere). Most of the really awesome games have been done (which is not to say that more will not be found), and submitting a "fairly awesome to some" movie runs the risk of the dreaded rejection. The largely unexplored systems, N64 and SMS still have issues/challenges. Anyways, sorry for the rant. Thanks for posting your opinion; I think it's great reading feedback from different site users :)

Yow, looks awesome. I'll second the extra thanks for cheat search update -- literally two days ago I was thinking to myself why oh why can't it be left open while running the game? And that you can double click to add to memwatch is just icing.

Wow, I'm sorry that I missed your first batch of these ... Very good work, and I look forward to more if you're up to it.

Yeah, I was testing if jumping was faster than walking, or vice versa, but they're the same. Improvements in time come from: -Pushing start at the beginning better. You just mash start several times. I saved about 90 frames (!) here. This should be one of the easiest parts to optimize. -Luck manipulating the jumping enemies so that the last one lands near the exit. This was pretty tricky sometimes. I failed at doing this on the last set of enemies, mostly because I got bored. -Better jumping on the part at the end where you have to turn around and go up. You move too far to the right before turning around. Just a couple of frames here but again this was an easy optimization. Getting hit by that bullet like you do does in fact save frames: I think you could gain a lot more time by manipulating more health for damage boosts like this. I'm glad you're not worried about being "beaten" -- but as it stands I can't imagine this movie getting published. I do look forward to another WIP of this or some other weird game from you in the forums.

I've been watching these runs quietly. The game itself isn't that great for tasing, but not terrible. I do find it entertaining in a staring-at-a-car-crash sort of way. You have certainly improved your movies a lot. I decided to try the game myself a bit and saved about 3.5 seconds in the first minute, up to when you enter that door with the hand over it, right before the first "boss" person who shoots out a tv. I have one less bar of health than you do, but you end the movie with 1 and a half bars of health so that theoretically shouldn't matter. And I'm positive my movie can be improved quite a bit actually, ending faster/with more health -- damage boosting seem quite helpful. So, not to belabor the point, but you should definitely post WIPs and stuff before going to the workbench... I certainly wouldn't mind seeing another improvement on this, especially now that I'm getting familiar with it ;)

gia, have you seen the snes9x + Lua that DeHacked put together? Could you implement something similar in another emulator?

It's under Config if you have 16 or up, and you must reenable it each time you start the emulator... and yes, even at low speed they will not play frames at the same rate

IMO there can (and probably should) be a slight difference between the most favorite movies of TASers in general, and movies which deserve a star.
I would agree with this to a certain extent, if having a star denotes "good for people new to this site" which it traditionally has of course. Personally, I think having a "star" isn't really the best way to present these. Having a star implies to me that the movie is a "star", got a "star" on their homework, is "stellar" etc, ie runs that are deemed "really good"[/digression] Aside from the semantics of it, there's no magical function to determine movies that fit your (or anyone's) criteria for "good first time movies". So, we are left with either: having a big ole debate about it; having someone (Bisqwit) just say this is the list; or having an automated method of polling people's opinions and spitting out a dynamic, informed list. While my list above is geared towards "people's favorites," there could be multiple lists (like Lord Tom said as well). One of them could be "Good for new visitors." Everyone can apply their own criteria towards getting the same result, and in the end we would be left with a list where most people will agree with most of the movies. I think the most important point is that there probably should be more directed ways of mediating visitor's experiences. The most obvious way to do this, and in the spirit of the site, is generating automated user-produced categories (though I do realize that this will still take a non-trivial amount of overhead to start out with).

OK, so no one wanted to send me a list (I probably wouldn't either) so I went out looking for them. Here is what I've found so far. And yes, the sample size is far too small. Feel free to help out with that :)

My thoughts on turboing in vba exactly :( I use a similar setup to mmbossman, but recently I've been switching over to right ctrl for frame advance instead of \ ... I had a tendency to push \ with my middle finger and works directions with my thumb which hurts after a while Also, I like having my primary save and load buttons easy to access -- I put save on C and load on numpad 0

Yeah, those awards are kind of related, but it should be something that is dynamic, includes all movies, includes the ability to "vote" for multiple movies, and is non-hidden :) I'm going to hold a "straw poll": anyone feel free to contact me with a list of your favorite overall movies and I'll come up with an aggregate list. Nominate as many as you like...

Seconded. Outside of technical limitations, I think you should be able to nominate as many movies as you like though, and the lists should be just the top 20 or so. It doesn't really matter how many nominations each member can make, because the more you make the less each one counts. For example, nominating every movie has the same overall effect as nominating none. Coincidentally, Lord Tom made the top of my list :) though it's not in any particular order
Also, previously in this thread, I wrote:
I think it would be neat to have lists of games that are interesting in different distinct ways (super fast looking, crazy luck manipulation, glitchy, ?) and would appeal to different folks. Maybe even lists from individual users that people could browse, and then some sort of aggregation of that into a more general list (man this is getting complicated).
:P
