Cool, thanks for pointing out that screenshot Warp. I checked some of the forums but missed that one. It's in now though. adelikat, thanks for those suggestions again, I added them to the list. Solon: I'm all about self-promotion, but isn't an improved version still on the workbench? Surely you don't want to jynx yourself ;) Also, thanks comicalflop for pointing out that the Mario Kart 64 run was Special Cup not Star Cup... Fact checking is always a good thing :)

DK only liked the first 15 minutes, the last 29.27 seconds sucked

I added in the new suggestions and broke it up into sections. "Poor Game Choice" is by far the largest :)

I'm fine with Ash and Gary and glad you took some amount of entertainment into account :) Though personally I think this is just the tip of the iceberg and this will be beaten, probably by a large % ...and if I were doing it I would aim for absolute speed since it's so short. In a 4 hour RPG tas a small trade for entertainment is ok or even desirable, but for a 2 minute run it seems like one would want to push the envelope. [off topic] RE: King's Bounty, Gens is open source like pretty much all the emulators used here. If you wrote a bot I'd be happy to run it (but only for co-author credit :P) Voted yes again.

This is a great run and I look forward to the ongoing exploitation of these games.

It would be a mistake not to go with the [anime] theme after naming the protagonist Ash on Pokemon Yellow, the Pikachu version... the one that after all tries to resemble the anime.
You don't really stick with anything else in the "anime" and your audience will be entirely confused anyways, so I think next time you could just use the faster Ash and Blue ;) You should also try your bots on King's Bounty next. On a side note, does anyone know why even though I had it on mute, it said "Pika!" in a horribly digitized voice during the title sequence?

This is my favorite racing TAS so far. And I think it will continue to be until it becomes 20 runs-into-the-wall-by-the-finish-line-to-win tracks. Even though this is mostly glitching tracks, there is still variety within the glitching.

Great! Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I'll be updating the list soon to include the movies y'all mentioned that aren't already on there, and perhaps put in some sections so it's not in as much disarrary. Feel free to suggest more too ;)

The labels are a little confusing ... "Save slot" in this case means "selects a slot where you can put a save", rather than "save to save slot". For both saving and loading, you choose the slot first, then push another hotkey to actually save or load to the slot. It bothered me at first, but I kind of like it now.

As you might have noticed if you're the curious sort, I've been compiling a list of interesting rejected/cancelled runs. Stuff that's "not quite up to standards" but still unique and entertaining (at least to me). I've called it Gruefood Delight. I haven't been able to watch every reject, especially some of the older ones, so I'm asking for your help now: what's your favorite Gruefood?

This movie was much faster paced than I had expected, and seemed very carefully done. I've always wanted to see a TAS of a Sierra game, and this was no disappointment. Perhaps you can tackle the SMS version of the first one next? ;)

I tweaked the Super Mario World script for SNES9X with Lua and made ones for Super Metroid and A Link to the Past as well... Super Mario World Super Metroid A Link to the Past It's impossible to make a general one for any game (at the moment), but if you start with the Zelda one you should be able to just tweak the local variables at the beginning to get one working for another game. I'll take requests for other games too ;)

Someone oughta open a can o' Lua on this idea. I would also love a movie to MIDI converter :) Edit: OK, so I opened the can :P Here's a Lua script to draw rectangles around Mario in SMW corresponding to input. (Visit this thread for info on running Lua scripts in snes9x) There is one rectangle for each direction, and a square for each button in the corners. I had to get the controller inputs from ram as I can't read them directly, so sometimes it does not correspond perfectly. Notably, it can't distinguish if you press A and B at the same time (it will read it as just A). Same for X and Y. Doesn't happen much in this game though. Edit Part 2, the Revenge: The code didn't paste correctly, so sorry if someone tried it :( I've put a link to this one plus ones for Metroid and Zelda below...

This game doesn't look particularly good smooshed in fullscreen, and scroll is downright nauseating. Is this really the only version of Mrs Pac-Man available on tas-able systems?[/lazy] Looks aside, this run was pretty repetitive as one would expect. The highlight for me was the walk-through-ghosts glitch... I tried playing around to see why it worked; seems like some sort of hit box issue when she changes direction (like you said). If it could be abused more to improve speed that might add interest. In general the routes looked good. I would think you could avoid eating ghosts altogether, but maybe not. I know it's a different game and all, but my expectations were kind of colored by Randil's run of original Pac-Man (YouTube link) (forum discussion with fcm's) which seemed faster-paced. An unfair comparison I suppose... Also, the number of levels played seems fairly arbitrary. Are later levels different in layout or do they just repeat indefinitely? I don't want to sound too negative; I'm glad you made the movie and "voted yes".

I dropped out of a computer science program, got a temp job answering the phone at a catalog company, then ultimately got into the IT department at the same company. I want to go back and get my degree at some point, but I'm terribly lazy :)

I didn't watch the whole movie so I won't vote, but the first 2 chapters were very boring (and this is coming from someone with a high tolerance for boredom ;) It seemed reasonably optimized, though I did note some autofiring to clear dialogs. Also it looked like sometimes you walk further than you have to... For example, around frame 5500, you have to walk up to get around a tree and then you walk down again. You walk up further than you need to to get around the tree though. Maybe stuff like this is luck manipulation? I don't know how much more you can do with this game, but this movie was too long for what it is.

I thought seeing the "levels" was cool... but this video entertained me a lot more, frankly.

I'm surprised I'm the only person who voted yes so far (even though I guess it's pointless now): The horses run off into the water! I'm still laughing now! OK, so I was also confused why the game ended so fast, and kind of disappointed that the two battles were identical (?), but I'm still happy to have seen this, if only to sate my curiosity about this game (and see horses run into a river).

Can I just import the library into my script or something? I was looking at that but wasn't sure how to make use of it.

Here's half your solution. I recommend using "r" mode. Bidirectional mode is not supported. Maybe you can use use command-line parameters for the other half? Or you'll be stuck with files.
That's a pretty neat method, too bad no "rw" though :( The input to the external program can't go through command-line parameters unfortunately. But files will work fine, just wanted to see if there was something cleaner. New question: is there any way to take a snapshot of a smaller part of the screen, something between getpixel and snapshot? Or a way to "crop" the gd string? Thanks again.

I have a Lua question: I want to run an external program, passing it input from my script and using the output as data. I believe I can do this by saving the input as a file, running the program with os.execute and pointing to the file, sending the output from the external program to another file then reading that file back into Lua. Is there an easier way, like sending the stdout from Lua into the stdin of the external program, and then vice versa?

I believe it's "sextuple" which should also elicit some snickers from our oh-so-mature crowd... Good luck, I will be eager to see it!
