I used to try to watch everything, especially things with little feedback, but now I usually just watch things that sound interesting. If I watch something I'll usually vote, but only comment if I have something to add to the discussion beyond "i liked/hated it". Let's face it, stuff like M64 has a devoted speedrunning community to itself -- but most people don't care about obscure NES titles like Linus Spacehead. Also, people don't like being wrong and if you never say anything you can't be wrong :P

http://www.roku.com/ It's a box for your tv that streams digital video from the internet, primarily Netflix. The main issue is that it does not support a lot of codecs and containers. But, it is relatively cheap and usable. For example, my parents can use it more easily than their oven (which, to be fair, is rather more complicated than it should be). See also: Boxee Box, Apple TV, Google TV, dozens of others. Wave of the future, IMO :P

OK, so a couple of things: In general, as people have said, encoding can be challenging. I am "good at computers" (or at least I successfully pretend to be for my job) and it took me quite a lot of trial and error and persistence to be able to do it. That said, I think there is a very high percentage of people here who are "good at computers" as well, especially compared to the general population. If one is motivated to put in the effort, it's really not that complicated. The thing I disliked the most about it was that it required incredible amounts of attention to detail combined with waiting around for hours. And if I did mess up that could take hours more. I mostly stopped encoding though not because of that but because it seemed there were plenty of other people doing it, which was not the case when I started. I still see this as the case today: it seems that people are even getting into petty bickering about duplicating work and stuff. If there is a real need for more encoders, I would be happy to step up and help out again. What I would really like though is a bit of direction. Perhaps there could be someone who delegates out various tasks?

So, I was thinking about it... What is the downside to "publishing" these movies, but keeping them segregated from the main population? (separate but equal lol) -Some site coding. I'm not terribly familiar with how everything works on the backend, but I would imagine you could do something like make a new category, "Gruefood Delight," and have normal movie pages exclude this category, and have the GD page include all of them. Feel free to shoot me down on this :P -Increased strain on the bittorrent tracker, I guess. Maybe it could be streaming/input file only? -More encoder's time. Seems to me there are battles to encode things these days, judging from the silly comments I've seen in submission threads lately. The main benefit would be that Critical five or whoever wouldn't have to manually maintain the page any more. Also it would look nicer. Also the authors could feel like they were published, without offending anyone with having the runs show up on normal pages. Just my three dollars.

If you haven't already, check out http://tasvideos.org/Movies/GruefoodDelight.html which has some other examples of alternate goals (like SM64 Capless Coinless Cannonless and SMW Walkathon and a bunch of others -- there's a whole tab called "Alternate Goals"). This page was started to house "interesting" but "unpublishable" movies and has recently been updated by Critical 5 with encodes for most of them (he is awesome again btw).

I enjoyed it thoroughly. Even though I knew he wasn't going to get any points on an intellectual level there was certainly still a lot of tension built up in "how is he going to get out of THIS one?" Plus isn't it hilarious that this game give you 0000 points for beating the final boss? What a dick! ("De gustibus non est disputandum," Alden grumbled under his breath.)
