Is it correct to assume that this TAS would have been accepted to the vault based on its gameplay, if it just happened to have a different setting? No math, no education, but the exact same gameplay.

I'd normally say "Go for the fastest version!", but with fangames, I prefer to see a TAS of the most complete release.

I found a ton of things in Gex 2. Here's a playlist containing most of them: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaXiWpJCa5_NwDMEyKxURCH6tp76Ik8LZ

That sounds like a very tough game to optimize, but it would be amazing to have another modern FPS TAS like this on the site.

I want to have a chance to publish it because I think this game deserves some recognitition and visibility. Also, personnaly, I think the 8 directions does not affect that much the run. I hope if someone better wants to do it, it could see this publication. Furthermore, I'm very proud of it, and it beats the current any% glitched record, so it might be at least be vault, no? I'm still hoping for moon because I really like this game, but I'll let the people and the judges decide :) Every TAS on this site is a personnal project, I simply want to share it :)
Even if the run does get published, despite the known improvements, I highly suggest you learn how to fully optimize your movement for any future attempts at this game.

Me neither - if, like those runs you quote, a Mahjong TAS can make it to Moons, I'll gladly support it.
The problem is that those two runs are extremely short. Yes, they are in the moon tier, but it's questionable if that is due to how entertaining they are or due to the popularity of those particular games. A Mahjong TAS that is just as fast would be very likely to get a lower rating just because it's Mahjong. In the worst case, we would see a TAS rejected that is technically much more impressive.

I'm not familiar with Mahjong at all, but I'm wondering if there could be cases where a fastest completion is non-trivial enough for a TAS (remember, we have NES Solitaire published). Or could some versions of Mahjong even allow for some sort of playaround?

Amazing TAS, it's so satisfying to see this game being broken apart, it has surely come a long way since the first TAS. While the FPS levels were obviously the highlights, I also enjoyed how you tried to make the autoscrollers as entertaining as possible. Strong yes vote from me!

I still don't get why score should not be vaultable in all cases. If there isn't an obvious max score, just go for the highest possible, the TAS could then be obsoleted by one that gets a higher score or gets the same one faster. And if the score just overflows? Define the point of the overflow as the max score. That could lead to boring strats being used to score? Well, that's the point of the vault, TASes in that tier don't have to be entertaining.

Just did a quick check on the Vault rules, and score is listed as a possible criteria. As long as you got the highest possible score, and got to such a score as quickly as you can, then that criteria is met.
Actually, it's not exactly like that. The Vault rules require the game to have a definite preset maximum:
Vault wrote:
  • The maximum score is easily defined and absolute - it must not be possible to gain a higher score, even theoretically. It must be definable without being dependent on precise time, speed, or similar requirements.
  • The maximum score is limited by not being able to gain any more points, not by hitting a score cap or overflow. If it is possible to score points infinitely, score cannot be used to define full completion.
Still, I think this run has a good chance to get in Moons. This is the only alternative to any% branch, it shows more of the game and the goal is challening.
And it's once again shown why the vault rules are too strict. Highscore should always be a vaultable goal.

I agree that going for the best possible scores would have been more entertaining. However, aiming for speed while also trying to maximize score without losing time is interesting from a technical perspective. At the very least, it seems to be non-trivial enough to be vaultable. Did I find this movie entertaining? Actually, yes. It might not go for the highest scores, but it's still nice to see ridiculous scores in just four minutes.

I was TASing an N64 game and noticed an annoying bug that can happen with the GLide64 plugin (I never saw the bug with one of the others). What happens is that when loading a savestate, the picture either freezes on the frame of the savestate or glitches into a black and white mess. The emulator itself doesn't freeze or anything, you can still advance frames or load savestates, only the picture is broken. The only way to fix it is by closing the emulator and hope it won't happen the next time. It also seems that the bug can only happen the first time you load a savestate. I was playing on a 1.xx version when I got the bug and finally updated to 2.2 because I read that the 2.0 release had improved the GLide64 plugin, but it seems the bug is still present. Is GLide64 even considered stable for TASing?

We should just face the reality that GDQ is not a speedrunning event, but a commercial gaming show that uses speedrunning as a gimmick. They can not be considered a part of the speedrun community and when looking at the content presented during the years, you can clearly see why. The schedules are not about giving the speedrun community a chance to show off their coolest runs, it's about showing the content that brings the most money. And don't even try to bring up the charity argument, you know exactly that GDQ is not a non-profit organization! If GDQ doesn't want the TAS community, fine, there's plenty of other marathons to go to!

The publication text needs some fixing, parts of the third paragraph still refer to a single author (the obsolete publication also has some of the same errors).

I also find it interesting that the one category that got accepted as a bonus, can not even be presented on console.

I have some great news! The 0 remote wrong warp has now been confirmed to work! I'm currently doing the movement up to that trick and from there on, Tigame will most likely take over to do the wrong warp as fast as possible.

If you want to count this as a door, you must also count the gates Zelda opens during the collapse sequence, the 'doors' that Dampe opens during the race, and hey, why not count Water/Spirit boss key skips since you press A in front of it to jumpslash in, and that's another technicality that can be argued? To further corroborate the Goron City 'door' not really being a door, we can look to the fact that it is called 'bg_spot18_shutter' in the game files, while all other doors are referred to as such (en_door, door_shutter, door_gerudo etc). We decided on what definition of 'using a door' we wanted to go with before the run started, and stayed consistent with it. If you have a problem with this definition, feel free to make another TAS using what you find appropriate.
Can you explain why you define the Door of Time as a door but not the one in Goron City? In the submission text you say: "Additionally, doors that are opened by actions other than an A press, such as the Door of Time, which normally requires 3 child dungeon stones and an ocarina song to open, are also disallowed" I can only assume you went by the name used in the game files, which probably call the Door of Time a door. But if you really wanted to be specific, you could argue that you do have to press A to open the door in Goron City (in order to talk to the Goron). You just don't press the button in front of the door, so it still counts under your definition. Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of your creative ideas for TASes, I'm just thinking that it might be a good idea to make the goal a bit more clear. I suggest adding a sentence or two about using the names in the game files as a reference.

Most game topics on the forums are dead, even for popular games. And especially in the case of OOT, the speed running community is just way too good, and has superceded TAS long ago. The only thing left on the TAS side is boring movement optimization. I expect this trend to only grow in the future. TASing modern games is a long, tedious process and TAS in general is so far behind RTA in almost every game that there is no catching up. TASes will probably fade out for modern(-ish) games altogether except as a research tool (as in LOTADs etc.) and will have basically nothing to do with TASVideos, as is quite frankly already the case. So, I can understand your wanting a return to times when threads like OOT were bustling with activity, but sorry I don't think they are ever coming back. Challenge categories like this one are the best approach/use for TAS at this point in my opinion, it keeps things fun.

I seem to have a very rare opinion about the game, regarding what exactly its problems are. Overall, I liked it a lot and while it has its flaws, I can easily look over them. So what are the problems of Yooka-Laylee? Basically all aspects where the game tries to be more modern! Those ideas fail and only show why the classic 3D platformers were designed the way they were. Examples: - Reducing the number of collectibles by using an energy meter This doesn't work as well, since you will constantly find yourself waiting for the energy to recharge, which slows down the gameplay. Having things like eggs and feathers worked well, since it gave the player an incentive to explore the levels to keep up the supply of the various types of ammo. - Flight everywhere The developers very obviously thought that it was "outdated" to have pads with the face of the characters throughout the levels, that are used to activate certain abilities. But yet again, Yooka-Laylee shows us why those pads where a smart design choice. Being able to fly everywhere breaks the game, plain and simple. Everything else was either fixed in an update or wasn't an issue for me. If they are ever going to make a sequel, all they had to do would be to not include the failed attempts at being modern that I mentioned, and the game might be on par with Banjo-Kazooie.
