I suggest people arguing read the article linked two posts back. Long story short, most academic grammarians would prefer "Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Super Gameboy".

Yes, Demos need to have a worth beyond the fact that they're there.

With the new publication system, I think the site as a whole needs to be restructured as well. Here is my suggestion. The front page should remain mostly as is, except there should be a large New to Tasvideos? Click here at the top, which will lead to the newcomer's greeting area. Here's how I see the text for the Movies page. I went out of my way to make the blurbs facetious rather than formal. I'd prefer them to be more formal on the actual page.
*Recommended list of movies for newcomers: Here's a short list of easily digestible runs for you to see what the site is about. Why should you have to read a twenty page essay to start watching a guy play video games? Runs Sorted by Game * List of games with runs (the number of different games on the site with a run) ** Arcade (number of arcade games) ** Atari (number of Atari games) ** Gameboy (number of Gameboy games) ** etc. Runs Sorted by Category * Pure Speedruns: I'm kind of short on time, let's just get this over with as quickly as possible. ** 100% Speedruns: But I want you to get all collectibles too. * Playarounds: Who cares about speed? Entertain me. * Superplays: Combine both speed and entertainment into an overall package (Note, this will overlap almost completely with the pure speedrun category, but it will be a smaller list) * Demos: Odd ideas and game specific categories. Can you go through Mario 64 while avoiding the letter C? * Stars: The best of the best. Handpicked by our mysterious Starmen for your amusement. * Other Categories: We like making lists. Some of these lists are less than helpful (This will open on a separate page. These will be the flags: Console verified, Commentary, TAS Milestones, AVGN, Eat at Joes, etc. Put the more informative (e.g. Console Verified, Commentary) closer to the top, and the just for fun (e.g. Eat at Joes) ones near the bottom.)
In each of these separate categories I think there should be the option for a list view (as Warp suggested). The by game lists should automatically be list view. I really think now that we're accepting runs from all games that can have a speedrun, we should have game specific pages. The pages could feature a short blurb about the game in question. After that it gives the fastest time the game has been completed, then fastest 100% time (if applicable), then lists other notable runs (playarounds, pacifist, different characters, glitch avoidance). For example, the Super Metroid page would look like this: Optional: A description of the game in question. Fastest time [1978] SNES Super Metroid "X-Ray glitch" by Cpadolf in 21:25.12 Fastest 100% [1195] SNES Super Metroid "100%" by Cpadolf in 1:08:10.87 Other notable runs: [1368] SNES Super Metroid by Taco, Kriole in 38:41.52 No xray beam glitch [1908] SNES Super Metroid "ingame time" by Saturn in 39:15.30 [2078] SNES Super Metroid "reverse boss order" by Saturn in 46:42.38 I would like it to become standard practice for there to be a short explanatory blurb at the top of all list pages.

http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/10132038 Let's see if this works. Why have the comments on the commentary page with the explanations and links been removed? If you're going to remove them, at least make note of them in the movie description.

Does this even count as a vault submission? I mean, it has an alternative goal. I agree that I would be more interested in seeing this if it didn't feature a character that can fly so far away from the arena the AI has to ring out if it wants to even get close to her.

Speaking of SM64, what are the chances that the latest version of the 16 star which never got published (or possibly even submitted) might get published now?

Actually, a layout similar to SDA might be useful since we are more accepting of different games.

You know, this again brings me to Gman's suggestion. (I know broken record here). In that case, the "Does this movie entertain you?" question has a large effect on the eventual fate of the movie, since the other two questions (Is this movie a pure speedrun (or 100%) and Is this movie as fast as possible (to our knowledge)) are more easily answered and readily apparent. The entertainment question is the most subjective of them all. Still the ultimate decision on a movie should come more form the discussion than the vote (as it does now).

Wrong thread, dude. I'm still not completely comfortable with the tiers system yet. Maybe because it does feel too arbitrary. I'd rather divide movies by the type of movie they are. We have enough categories there to make a meaningful division of the site. All in all, I think the main division is not necessarily straight entertainment, but relative importance of entertainment to speed. Say this way. A movie where speed is much more important than entertainment is a record. A movie where speed and entertainment are both given strong consideration is a super play. A movie where entertainment is much more important than speed is a play around. Also we have star movies so new people don't feel overwhelmed by the large number of movies on the site.

Any chance of getting a commentary icon sometime soon, then?

I support GMan`s proposal, personally. It seems to me to be the most meaningful breakdown yet.

I agree. Is there a glitch in the system from the new tiers? Did adelikat add them manually?

I think that would depend on the game. In a large majority of case, I would say real time is the way to go, but with Sonic games for instance, where getting a good real time sometimes involves waiting for the timer to reach a certain time, I would go with in-game time.

I'm kind of torn on that. In the case of Castlevania: Bloodlines, my instincts say that the two characters should both be represented. Same with Contra: Hard Corps. Some people have suggested a four tier system. Maybe something like this - Bottom tier: Pure speed. Any cost. -- Entertainment plays no roll whatsoever here except as a tie breaker -- e.g. Super Metroid: Xray beam of doom - Second tier: Well defined branches (Full completion, character choice) -- The only way entertainment applies is in whether or not the goal makes a very different run -- e.g. Super Metroid all items - Third tier: Entertainment runs (allows for more esoteric categories e.g. glitch avoidance, reverse boss order, CCCless, speed/entertainment tradeoffs and pure entertainment runs (see River City Ransom)) -- Entertainment is used as a barrier for making it into this tier. Runs should show a definite effort to entertain the audience rather than just speeding through the game. - Star tier: Best of the best. Chosen by commitee

I have a question. What about character choice as another category? For example, in Mario Bros. 2, the fastest game uses a mix of Luigi and Toad. What about the Peach only run, or Toad only? Would that have to get a moon or can it be accepted as a pure speedrun? Actually a better example would be Castlevania: Bloodlines. It's a very different run depending on which character you choose, and the times between the two characters are about the same. Do we only allow the fastest time or would both runs be allowed in the "Vault" category (assuming they did not qualify for a "Moon")?

Comparison video I put in audio from both games this time. I usually don't do this because it usually results in the music phasing.

TASes are usually a couple of systems behind the current generation. TASing for Wii and Gamecube is still very very young. There should be a TAS for those games sometime, but it will take a long time. Possibly a few more years considering the size and complexity of those games and what goes into making a TAS.

Man, that WIP makes the levels look like nothing. That's good for now, but I do hope the levels lengthen just a bit as the game goes on.

I kind of wonder whether hard or normal would be better. My argument for normal is that you don't start with everyone on the roster, which means that you have to pick people up if you want them, which means strategy will change over the course of the run, and you have to make decisions on whether the time taken to get a person is worth the time he saves. That seems much more interesting to me. Also, there may be levels on normal where just going to the exit is faster. Not sure if that last point is a plus or a minus.

I don't think I've ever laughed out loud in amazement for a TAS as much as I did for this one. Yes vote, and I think it might be able to take the star from the other run of this game. So, did HSWKs turn out to not be that useful?
