Time for a long overdue update! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/136327733/Traysia%20NEW%20WIP.gmv Back to last stopping point - and now 24,820 frames ahead of my last WIP. Biggest improvement came from not having to run through the Thieves Cave in Ch. 3 to do the money exploit. Bellenue is the only one I have to shop for, which also means considerable time was saved buying things and equipping them. Battles now have a different feel to them than before. It's almost like watching a pseudo shooter instead of a turn-based RPG :D Bellenue rips through enemies, while Roy and the rest are strategically moved around the battlefield to draw foes in (Roy dying also causes a GAME OVER; gotta keep him alive). Like I mentioned earlier, the rest of the game is routed and seems rather easy to finish. Might have a submission ready here within a week!

It looks a lot better that way. The less random battles that pop up, the better.

Hey Panda, any progress on the run? I've been casually checking out the thread at SDA, and it seems like someone's trying to iron out the issues w/ the Verminator skip. Hope the project gets running again!

Like Fog mentioned, this would have been more appropriate to upload as a WIP in the forums. You would likely receive more constructive feedback on this, as well.

Do you always have to make smart-ass responses to people? I really don't appreciate that. Like I mentioned, my mistake. Being as English isn't likely his first language, I wanted to help out by including photos and going into some more detail. As it turns out, it was redundant. Lesson learned.

My mistake. Didn't think he understood what was being explained. edit: And to be frank, I disagree on this whole "out of line" part. I was offering a more detailed explanation on something which I thought he wasn't grasping. Turns out it wasn't the case, and he let me know.

Does it actually work like that? I thought during a lag frame the game doesn't read input, so you can 'skip' all lag frames.
That''s a good point. In particular, I've noticed that the game I'm working on allows you to "rapid fire" D-pad movements while in battle. Meaning, I move much faster by inputing 'LEFT, skip a frame, LEFT, skip a frame, etc.', instead of just holding the button down. In that case, if a lag frame would've popped up during that sequence, I'd lose time because the game would be reading my previous input before/after the lag frame instead of a new one. It's definitely not the case for all games; but for Dimon's case, it could be a time saver if game is programmed similarly.

Not very important. Nothing scary if I start to do something a frame later (i.e. if I pressed a key when the counter is red)!
Actually, let me explain one important reason why doing something on a 'red frame' can hurt your run and cost time. For example, say you are running down a hallway in Duke Nukem while holding the UP key. If you hold that UP key when the frames go from 'white' to 'red', you are wasting time because you could have made a new movement once the frames became 'white' again. In my case, the game I'm currently working on has a lot of lag frames, and I need to make sure not to keep a button held during lag. Otherwise, I'm wasting time.

Dimon, when your frame counter is white, that is when the game accepts your input (the buttons you are pressing on a frame). When the frame counter is red, the game currently is not accepting input. That's a major reason why displaying your frame counters are important.

Quick update on Traysia. I have Ch. 3 finished, and the rest of the game completely routed. However, I've noticed that it may be possible to finish boss fights even faster by abusing Bellenue in battle. Unlike everyone else, Bellenue has a far shorter attack animation. I'm thinking that, if I can position enemies right next to her, she would be able to rapid-fire shots with very little animation and lag in between. Depending on how well this actually works, I may go back to the very beginning. edit: Talk about greased lightning! A sloppy, unoptimized test-run of Ch.3's boss battle beat my prior WIP by 673 frames! Looks like I'm going back and making some improvements:) In the meantime, here's my current, now obsoleted WIP completing Ch. 3: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/650762516/Traysia%20TAS.gmv edit2: Ch. 1 refinished. 1547 frames saved, so far.

Did Link actually obtain anything, or was it just a bugged animation? It'd be very nice if it were possible to manipulate obtaining the hammer with that glitch.

I don't think it would be all that repetitive. Having Rafael's Stick would be like having a portable Church with you. A few menu uses, and you're good to go. I'm not sure, though, how much STR would be lost at level-up. Your STR would likely be around 6900 with the Bronze Sword equipped. Would it really drop down so low that you would have to "recharge" it?

You're likely not going to make it past level 19 or 20 doing the speedrun. All the archmonsters, combined, only give out 195,000 EXP (aside from any grinding you do). However, you could experiment with "re-activating" the Super Strength glitch, here and there, to give you the 2722 SRT again before a level-up. I do wonder, though, if Rafael's Stick could be used without being at level 31...

Hey Dimon, are you familiar with your frame counter/input display settings on Gens? If you haven't already done so, you can display them on your emulator screen by clicking the OPTIONS tab at the top, and choosing 'General...' from the menu. From there, another window will pop up. Click the three circled options. Having these frame numbers displayed allows you to precisely determine the earliest (optimal) possible input, especially when used along with frame advance. Hope any of this helps!

Nice find with the Attack Star exploit! Like Patashu mentioned, saving 10 minutes of time off of the RTA WR is impressive. 'Yes' vote.

When I first saw the submission title, I thought that it had to of been a typo and be for the Sega 32X, instead. But after checking out the link Spikestuff provided, I've got to say that - like SNES Doom - I'm genuinely impressed with how the developers were able to squeeze so much output out of the Sega Genesis (the music, however, being a different story). Dimon, this effort looked a lot tighter (more optimized) than Doom 64. Movement looked pretty good, and I didn't immediately notice any wasted time standing around or fighting unnecessary foes. Like Spikestuff pointed out, I am concerned with the 139 frames of blank input at the very end. Can it be quickly corrected, and resubmitted? Otherwise, I gave a 'Yes' vote. I hope you continue to improve and submit more FPS runs in the future!

The run looks very smooth! I like how you were able to manipulate a lot of the (for lack of a better word) 'softer' hits when jumping on enemies. I remember only rarely seeing those back when I played the game on console.

Chapter 2 finished! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1770349221/Traysia%20TAS.gmv
THE KINGDOMS OF MILLENIUM
Lots of combing the desert for Roy & the Gang;) Route order was: Iyuve>Lyude>Selve Village>Mountain Cave>Back to Iyuve>Master Swordsman's Hut>Back to Lyude>Back to Iyuve AGAIN>Master Swordsman's Hut>Iyuve ONE MORE TIME>Northern Temple>...Iyuve. Can't complain about the BGM. This game, easily, has one of the best soundtracks on the Genesis. Stocked up on Mage Sticks for Magellan and Benegie, bringing their DEF up to around 140. Wizard's Helper was still able to hit for over 30 dmg (although I manipulated it to do less). Ch. 3 should be interesting, and considerably faster paced.

Appreciate the feedback! Growing up, I spent a lot of my time, after school and on weekends, renting RPGs for the old consoles. Me and some of my friends would stay up all night trying to beat them. I think between me and Janus, we'll eventually have the whole Genesis RPG library filled :D

Unfortunately, the Griffin Wing only lets you teleport back to the previous town. The Aries spell, however, allows you to pick your destination (though costs 9000 kim). Not sure if you're familiar with the website, but rpgclassics has a great resource for Sword of Vermilion. It could help out a bit with routing. http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/genesis/sov/index.shtml

Looking tighter! Would it be faster to fight the Dog Kobolds (4 EXP) in the very beginning, instead of the green (1 EXP)/blue (2 EXP) slimes? Even the skeletons (8 EXP) give out considerably more, although they'd likely take longer in battle to kill. I love the visual of the Dragon being defeated in one shot. [Measures up for a big swing...BAAAAM!!]

Chapter 1 finished! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/270918489/Traysia%20TAS.gmv Floyd and the so-called 'Master' were blitzed through. With the Power and Mage Stick's equipped, Magellen took no damage from the stronger Floyd. Not taking damage saves around 15 frames, each time. Chapter 2 is fairly simple, route-wise. Monsters hit significantly harder (Magellen took 60+ dmg in the first boss fight in a test run). Looks like I'll need to stack at least 4 Mage Sticks in order to nullify damage.

Your shopping at the very start looked mis-routed. Is there a reason you needed to make an extra shop visit to sell a single potion?
Good question. I needed enough money in the beginning to purchase a Short Sword for Wizard Hill. In order to do so, I had to do the following: 1) Collect hidden Potion by Item Shop (15g) and immediately sell. 2) Get 100g from Mom by the Inn. 3) Sell my Round Shield (80g) and Leather Shoes (50g) at the Armor Shop. 4) Finally, visit Weapon Shop to sell my Dagger (5g) and purchase Short Sword for 250g. The shopping system in Sorcerer's Kingdom is kinda goofy in that you can only sell items to their own merchants. Meaning, weapons can only be sold at Weapon Shops; armor only at Armor Shops, etc.

New, updated WIP that finishes 378 frames ahead of the old test run's stopping point. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/49820700/Traysia%20TAS.gmv Slightly better walking optimization. The jagged diagonal walking wasn't any faster, so I left it out entirely, save for a few interesting spots. Random encounters operate on some kind of constant inner timer. Both of our WIPs had random encounters occur during the same points in time, despite being on different frames and positions on the map. There doesn't appear to be an obvious way to avoid them, save for entering towns or other exits on the map. Not a huge deal, since battles can be easily fled and don't take much time to input. I've got the rest of the first chapter routed; shouldn't take much time to do. Absolutely no grinding is necessary, and I plan on abusing the 'Stick' stacking bug to its full effect. Despite the game's hiccups, this run looks promising.
