Hmm...going by my experience TASing Warsong for the Sega Genesis, I was sometimes able to get better results during a particular battle by completing a prior sequence just short of optimization (give or take a few frames). Just that one frame, or group of frames, was often enough to adjust the RNG to the point where I got a more favorable outcome than before. Have you tried something like this already? Maybe de-optimizing the Thraxx skip by a few frames could be enough of an adjustment to get things going again?

Hi, everyone. Whew! I've gotta admit that I've "fell off the wagon" for a while due to real-life's (i.e. work) demands. Regrettably, I haven't put much time into this TAS since my last update. Prion and Truncated, I appreciate the encouragement! Your posts have definitely inspired me to continue progress. I'm going to pick up where I left off and start posting updates again!

This is definitely worth checking out! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/557605893/retroworld-relive-your-gaming-childhood-as-a-retro?ref=category (Game description from the website:) With a style heavily inspired by the quirkiness of the Earthbound/Mother series, Retro World takes you on a fantastic journey to a parallel universe where video games come to life. Experience 30 years of gaming evolution, from the early pong days to the modern games of today. Attend midnight game launches or test your skills in competitive in-game tournaments. Read in-game magazines for tips, tricks and reviews, or for the latest rumors about the new Gametron 9000 XZ. My childhood consisted of a pure diet of EGM, Nintendo Power and every video game I could get my hands on. Weekends meant all night gaming marathons with friends and swapping NES games with kids on your street was part of daily life. You never had to worry about DRM, constant online connections or bricking your console with a firmware update. Things were wonderfully simple. It was a time when a new console generation meant taking a giant leap into the future of gaming. You never could have mistaken an SNES/Genesis game for an NES title, even if your parents thought it all looked the same. We didn't have E3, we had CES and gaming publications would trickle out screen shots from the event for months. Release dates were ambiguous at best, which meant you had to call your local store every single day throughout the summer to see if Zelda II was available (sorry store guy). This was growing up with video games in the 80's and this is where Retro World comes from. Link to video

Just wanted to say that you're one of the hardest-working TASers I've seen on this site, man! I admire your dedication in improving runs as much as possible. Keep up the stellar work!

Thanks for the feedback, Osmi! It was a fun accomplishment to add subtitles with a run that I put so much work into.

Whoa, hold on a sec. Where was Bisqwit being condescending? Is he not allowed to make a statement and defend himself when someone objects to him posting relevant material to the topic thread? Sorry, but all I've seen on here so far is opportunistic jabs at his faith for not living up to an ideal image of how a Christian is "supposed" to conduct themselves. To my knowledge, a Christian is simply someone who places their trust in a Higher Authority to deliver them from their sins; not someone who needs to live up to everyone's expectations to be perfect. Bisqwit, in my view, you did nothing wrong by sharing relevant topic material. You have every right to post whatever you feel contributes to a thread on here.

You are giving way too much weight to some ancillary side comment I made in parentheses, and missing my point completely. Remember, everything written in parentheses can (not) be ignored.
The parentheses thing wasn't my main point, Warp. The issue concerning my response to you was that you were hammering him for talking about famous Christian figures in his neck of the woods (Finland). I'm not seeing how how you're coming to the conclusion that he's 'preaching his religion' for sharing a relevant life experience (Meeting famous people). He spoke at length about it, and embedded some links leading to more information, but where was he acting out of line? And speaking of things being 'uncalled for', who are you to judge and take him to task for allegedly lacking 'honesty and integrity' for his personal beliefs? That just comes off as ridiculing someone, man.

I think you know perfectly well what I am talking about, and are only rationalizing in order to justify your post. Not to be a huge dick, but I would expect a bit of honesty and integrity from a bible-believing Christian. As for the Uri Geller example, it would have been made a difference if the poster had used it as an opportunity to promote some kind of psychic belief system (or to bash it, for that matter), rather than just mentioning the name of a person who is genuinely famous (for good or bad) because of having been a prominent public figure internationally, appearing on many TV shows, popular magazines and so on. It's the same difference as if someone said simply "I have met John Travolta", or additionally using that as an opportunity to promote scientology. That kind of attitude generally irks people.
Warp, to be honest, your attitude towards Bisqwit is irking me. He didn't come on in here and start throwing around John 3:16, asking anyone if they had a personal relationship with Jesus. I took Bisqwit's post as him sharing an experience that he felt fit within the topic. Heck, he mentioned the famous city of Jerusalem, which caught my attention and compelled me to further share another experience I've had in life. So what if he embedded some links within his post? No one has to click on them if they don't want to.

I met Kurt Angle at a TNA house show a few years back in my home town. I got to shake his hand and take a picture with him in the middle of the ring after the show. The dude was polite, but had the most intense demeanor I've ever seen.

Alright, after a long week at work, I've finally got a little free time! First off, I've indeed decided to go with the original Japanese version from this point onward. Doing so eliminates any complications from accepting ROM translations, as well as provides additional appeal to a majority community of Japanese viewers. Text boxes fly by quickly enough, so I've realized that the language isn't really an important feature in this run (subtitles will suffice). With that said, here's a rough WIP of Scenario 1 of the M.I.J.E.T. translation: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/712823023/Langrisser%20II%20%28Japan%29%20%28v1.gmv I'll definitely be able to shave some time off this stage. Due to Langrisser 2 having a more balanced damage calculator, I likely won't be getting many 'hail Mary passes', or unlikely one-shot kills, here like I did with Warsong. Superior stats are far more important, this time around. Therefore, the Town Guards will be defeated sooner. I should be able to eliminate a battle from Elwin and Hein, as well. All in all, I'm pretty pumped for this one. I'm going to try to knock out a couple of stages a week until I get to the end.

I'd just go with the Japanese language. I think a couple of runs have subtitles with English to translate the conversations etc, if needed this run would probably get the same treatment. Also there will be no more "Will the translation work on a real console?" from me if you just TAS it in Japanese :P
Haha, incentive already!

I'm not actually sure if that's true - TASes on nicovideo get ridiculous viewer counts compared to on youtube (as in 10x and up). (Unless you meant community in a different sense?)
...that's actually a good point, Patashu. I didn't take into account the massive community over at nicovideo. With that in mind...I'm down with doing either one (a finished run in Japanese would likely get a better reception at nicovideo, also.). I'll need to take the night and make up my mind. I'm very open to everyone's thoughts here. I dream big, and I'm driven to make this run worthy of the 'Star' tier.

That's exactly my question. Because translation hacks that breaks the games ability to run on a real console should in my opinion not be accepted as it would then abuse emulator bugs to work. Regen is also closed source, no one knows how the "accuracy" is achieved except for the developer, I wouldn't trust that emulator too much.
From playing the complete translation (all Scenarios, secret levels, etc.), I noticed zero bugs or anomalies and see no reason why it couldn't. Maybe with the sole exception of cartridge size due to the English dialogue. Honestly, if I knew how to download the ROM onto a cartridge and prove that it works on a console, I'd do it in a heartbeat and upload the video. All in all, I really would like to offer a full published run to the community in English, since that's the majority language.

Only one question: Does the translation run on real hardware without glitching up the game?
I'm sorry, are you asking if it's capable of running on an actual Genesis console? I'm assuming it can, and have heard of cases where altered ROMs were successfully placed back onto a cartridge format. I can only say with certainty that it plays on the Gens emulator completely glitch-free. I've played it in it's entirety in the past. There's also a full 'Let's Play' on YouTube which uses the new translation: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA12ADD376ACCE3E0

Bozel and Bernhardt fight each other in ?4. Possibly because of that whole betrayed him thing in a previous stage. Problem is the generals up to Bernhardt all have absurd magic defence so you can't even cast Decline and then spam meteor, blast or earthquake. Has it been established how you get into ?4 anyway? Isn't part of the requirement that you have all characters at capped secret levels? That's unlikely enough in a normal run. In a TAS I imagine only one or two characters would even get to their secret classes. I suppose a speed run would be the only time rangers/high masters are actually worthwhile. But they probably still suck.
Hmmm...I didn't take into account magic defense. That would make putting a game plan together more challenging. Still haven't exactly figured out how to enter S?4. AmaizumiUni over on the Japanese forum (I believe) said that he/she would look into it. Otherwise, I'm planning to go forward with a full run that excludes this stage, for the time being. I'm currently in the process of finishing Scenario 1. For one, this game is FAST and having battles turned off will make things far quicker than they were in Warsong. In determining battle outcomes, 'Player' phase RNGs are similar, while 'Enemy' phase RNGs appear to be far less manipulable (at least in regards to what I'm used to). I should have a WIP up here within the next few days.

You don't really need permission from the translators to do a run of the translation. Even if you could get into ?4, it's not like it would be possible to complete it. Bernhardt has what, 90/90 stats or something? You'd have to excessively grind using the stage skip cheat.
You're right in that Bernhardt (and EVERYONE else in that place) has outrageously insane stats. Back in the day, I think I used at least 3 runestones on Elwin (plus Langrisser, Assault Suit, etc.). However...I got some ideas floating around on how to beat it, TAS-style. Along with standard luck manipulation, the stage itself isn't too stable (I recall a bugged Demonlord unit that would occasionally turncoat and attack Bernhardt). If I can put all of these pieces together, it'd turn out to be a pretty entertaining stage!

Just when I thought this one couldn't be broken further... This was like the 'Dance, Dance, Revolution!' of Earthbound TASing! Definitely keep the extra input feature intact with the encode (if possible) if published. Otherwise, staring at just the start-up screen diminishes the entertainment value. All in all, an eye-catching run! このTASはとてもいいとおもしろいですよ。 ピロヒコさんどうもありがとう。

@ Graywords Thanks for helping with the translation! I'm actually motivated to go back through my college textbooks/CDs to continue my Japanese again. Between both forums, the stage conditions seem to be leaning towards having to complete at least a second playthrough. Either way, I'm planning on something fun for that level if I can't include it in a TAS. @ AmaizumiUni すごいですよ。どうもおありがとう。私は待ち遠しいです。 良い週末を友達。

Yes, it's second playthrough, not second turn. The same term (2周目) is used for games that have a loop, i.e. after completing the last stage restart from the first stage with higher difficulty. Either way, the conditions are such that I wouldn't worry about ?4 in a TAS, looking forward to seeing how your run goes :)
Thanks, Prion! I'm going to begin work on it after I get my caption commentary done for the Warsong run.

Probably your best bet would be one of the site admins, Nach or adelikat. EDIT: I would also suggest asking MIJET themselves if they'd object for any reason. But that's me.
Awesome, I'll get into contact with Adelikat this weekend and see what he thinks. I also checked MIJET's website for contact information. They've got an email, but they also advise that it may take weeks to get a response back. Crazy. I'll have to see how that one goes.
