I had considered TASing this game a while ago just for fun (I didn't think it would get accepted to this site), but it seemed that while recording was possible, re-recording wasn't... did this TAS have to be made in FCEUX, or would there be a way (that I missed) to do it in the old FCEU? EDIT: Just watched the video and my vote is no. I'm pretty sure that when Stevenson jumps, the game lags one frame, and his jumps are not optimized (too many extra jumps). Also, I'm not sure the 100% goal is good for this game -- levels 1 and 2 can be at least twice as fast since you can skip the desert area in level 1 and the huge skull area in level 2 if you purposefully miss some balloons. I think the 100% only adds to the movie's repetition, but doesn't add entertainment. Also, I think the boss fight could be faster at the end.

Yes vote -- great run, AxeMan. I have a question though -- in the earth cave, do the events during the vampire fight affect the battles you encounter after the vampire is killed? The same question can be posed for the Eye in the ice cave, and the Phantom in the final dungeon. I only ask because I think it would suck to kill the vampire, only to encounter a group of wizards on the way out of the earth cave. Believe me, that happened numerous times on the console!!
Post subject: Splitting a .fcm file?

I did a quick search and found nothing about this question. Is there any way to take an existing .fcm file (one that completes an entire game) and split it into more than one file that still plays? For example, could you take the SMB .fcm file and extract from it a short .fcm file that just shows world 8-4, played in the exact way that the whole movie played that level? I'm curious because this would be nice for WIPs, especially for long games. Viewers could watch later parts of the game without watching everything that came before it. I already know that you can start a new .fcm from anywhere in a game, but it would be really useful to take a short clip from a longer clip. Thanks for help in advance if anyone can offer it. Any information on SNES emulators would be great too, if you have it.

This thread seems like the only appropriate place to post this question, but... did I miss something? The submission queue was huge, and then all of a sudden the encoders took steroids, and now the submission queue is the emptiest I've even seen. WTF happened?

I've done a solo hero quest. You would only need to level up a hero to about 60 + the right equipment to beat zoma. Basically you just need a lot of HP and plenty of MP for healall spells. I would find it so incredibly funny if the game were beaten faster with a lone hero XD
I've thought about that before as well, and even mentioned it in the discussion of my glitched submission. The Noh Mask would be a great asset, since you can still cast spells in battle -- and if you're the only party member, CF status doesn't mean anything except for an annoying message before each attack. If you could manipulate the EXP so you could get to level 60 (as you suggested), you could just get MP and HP while ignoring strength if possible. Then, get to Zoma (equip the Noh Mask right before his battle only), and alternatve between herbs and Lightning, whichever does the most damage. You'll have room in your inventory for 2 herbs, I believe. Then, if your inventory is almost empty, there may be enough treasure in the Shield of Heroes Cave so you can open up chests, discard the mask, and chant return to alefgard to save a bit of travel time.

A couple more things also. I'm getting married in 4 days (yikes) so no more TASing at least for a couple of weeks/months most likely. Walking outside also produces swamp tiles, but you can still fight enemies. If done right, weird things can happen, such as an invincible character, or enemies attacking themselves. Thanks for the screenshots, Dwedit.

Here is a link to the .fcm file that I created. (It's the file that Dwedit took screenshots from). http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1969979827/beenumb.fcm Also, here is the original letter I wrote to Dwedit a while ago... ============================== dave_dfwm wrote: Dwedit, I'm sending this to you since you're probably the only one that can interpret what's going on here. In this movie, 3 things are shown: 1. Most importantly, it is possible to do the dream ruby glitch without the dream ruby! Unfortunately, I still need Killer Bees near Kanave. Scorpion wasps don't cause numbness. I tried to use the poison status as well, but only numbness works. 2. Infinite gold is achieved, if that were to ever be useful. 3. A freaked-out return location in Alefgard that is 'out-of-bounds'. Watch the movie up to frame 36,000 and you'll see where I'm at. A couple of notes: I didn't want to make a huge deal out of this and post it in the public forum since I'm most likely not going to be able to have time to TAS this game again now due to grad school and wedding planning. *Performing the glitch in Aliahan seems much more unpredictable than doing it with the fortune teller. *However, we now have the king -- perhaps saving the game could cause some new results to happen. *I have gotten the 'regular' Alefgard return locations to work in Aliahan using the Dream Ruby item combined with Luisa's place. However, it should be noted that the strange place that I returned to in the video appears to be semi-random... I have done other tests and returned to the same 'out of bounds' area in Alefgard, but had a different starting spot. Perhaps if this strange glitch could be decoded, you could use a wing of wyvern and end up at a spot right next to Zoma's Castle. *In my previous testing before the published glitch run, I was able to get infinite experience points. If this could be done again, a solo hero could get to level 99 and have glitched equipment and do a solo Zoma fight. (My 4 party members were on level 20 in the published run, so this is only ~19 more level-ups to watch... plus, I may not need to spend time in the dream ruby cave). Perhaps another idea would be to just glitch enough experience points (and spells) and some pilgrims and the hero. Then, fight a slime outside of Aliahan, and return to the strange spot. *Also, you probably see that a 'phantom' hero is created with zero attributes and a lot of cypress sticks. You cannot make him leave the party since he is a hero. I don't know what to do about that. He cannot level up. Take a look at this video and let me know what you think. Thanks Dave =============================

Wow. I am completely blown away by this, and I love the Mother Brain "fight" (if you can even call it that). I also appreciate the pose after Kraid is beaten. YES. (the vote, I mean). My only question is this: After you get the freeze beam and restart, you pass through the vertical room that normally requires bombs to reach Kraid's lair. Would it save a few frames to enter that frame on a jump and shoot a missile (on the way down from your jump) to kill the crawler, then jump again on to the bomb bricks, and shoot a 2nd missle (on your way up in the jump) to open the door going right? If it works, it could be a very minor frame saver, since I noticed you had to briefly pause to wait for the opening door.

I look forward to seeing this finished run. I seem to recall that in the current published run the last and final escape room is one time unit slower than possible.

Any progress recently? If so, I'd love to see a WIP! I'm in FF2 withdrawal. I love Super Metroid, but it'd be nice to see posts in other SNES threads too!

I'm probably wrong, but I keep thinking that there may be a powerbomb somewhere in Norfair that can be received without super missiles. In addition, the kejardon movie didn't collect the speed booster.

Another example: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1383736737/c4talljumps.smv Not sure if either of these are faster (I'm sure they could be with better enemy manipulation) Either way, I think that even if they aren't faster, they could at least add more entertainment value to the movie.

Take a look at this: When a bat ring is whipped from the top, you can get high vertical leaps. This may be useful in some rooms. Here is an illustration of a possible shortcut. Unfortunately, the bone dragon wasn't moving the way I wanted him to, so I had to wait a bit. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/577507746/c4batnew.smv

Yes vote Voting "no" means you are in favor of keeping the existing run which is 80 minutes slower!

If you do so, the difficulty level will be set to 2 (the highest is 3), which will cause the first boss fight to be ~2 seconds slower because the 4th boss tank will come out ~2 seconds slower. However, since less enemies wil be spawned, lags can be less. (Hard to say that, since there is always one more jeep on screen, unless you abuse deaths and continues.) Boss fight 3 won't be over 0.8 seconds faster as you have to wait for the last "eye" to open to destroy it. In my movie, I had destroyed all the other "eyes" before the last one opened.
Hmm -- it may be possible then to use death and make the game faster (but at the risk of the movie looking sloppy)... In a 2-player run, you could: High difficulty for boss 1 fast spawn, kill player 1 Go on to next level. Or something like that.

Great improvement. However, I still think the fastest way to do this game would be two player: Player 1 has rocket + horizontal fire upgrade Player 2 has rocket upgrade only This would allow you to take out enemies fast without lag-inducing explosions, and would make boss fights 2, 3, 4, and 6 faster. Yes Vote.

You did a good job, but I don't think there was enough entertainment in it for a person who has never played this game before (and is perhaps jaded by the two fantastically entertaining Gradius runs) so I'm going to Meh this. Publishable? Probably, the bosses were handled very well and ~100% kills is always cool, but an autoscroller is an autoscroller, and I just didn't feel like enough was done for bonus entertainment, although I guess pumping up to PRO difficulty would make that tricky to do.
More could have been done in the name of entertainment, such as more enemy and bullet dodging, but it would have made many more sprites appear on the screen and cause lag. There is a Youtube video playthrough of a guy that does more of this http://youtube.com/watch?v=zxD_zeqEp30 However, his video is almost TEN MINUTES longer than mine, almost entirely due to lag. You can easily verify level differences by listening to what music you hear at the end of my levels and at the end of his. I believe Angerfist said earlier that lag reduction made the movie more entertaining, and I agree with him.

Hi Deign! Are you almost ready to post another WIP of this game? I can't wait to see it done. Also, a random question: would it be worth it to try and manipulate yourself into getting the Bomb call spell on the moon? It is powerful, uses very little magic, and has a very short animation and casting time. In a best case scenario, you may not have to level up Rydia to use Nuke.

Very nice route change. It looks as if this is going to be get published before most members even see it was submitted! (yes vote from me, but obviously unnecessary at this point...)

WIP Update http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1659925110/%21%21R-Type-Dave.smv As you can tell, the game gets better as I am able to gather more speed upgrades. I'll also try to showcase each weapon at least once in the movie. I think the second half of level 3 turned out to be pretty awesome -- the first part of the level has unavoidable flying fish lag. (The lag is even worse if I would've fired my weapon). EDIT: Also, note that there is a new stage select at the beginning, and that I play in PRO mode. The title screen is not any longer, but I must pause in the first level briefly to select the correct level.

I'll mess around tonight on the PRO mode selection at the title screen and first stage. If it's doable, I will of course play in PRO mode. As for your suggestion, Moozooh, the force pod is definitely a nice (and entertaining, hopefully) tool to use. If it's disconnected, it can fire 4 bullets at once. A well-timed shot could take out a lot of enemies.
