Yes vote -- but only because of Bowser playing an accordion and Samus playing a cello at the end of the video!

I always like to see newer versions of classic games. This looks very tightly optimized! When you are under half health, does the bo staff and shuriken do the same damage, or does the shuriken do more? If it does more, it seems like the technodrome could be done in one less hit or something. Anyway, yes vote.

Thanks for the support so far, everyone. I actually kind of like the "random" screen shot #14 chosen by the NES robot.
Anyone want to try the glitched run?
Probably not me, at least not for a long time. However, I would be willing to offer advice/tips if needed for someone if they were interested. For example, menu manipulation is faster if you alternate directions (down right down) instead of going the same direction twice in a row (down down right). You can use this to save frames for equipping and spell chanting, but it doesn't work when entering your name at the beginning. I would like to see a separate non-obsoleting (see my reason for this in the submission text) run just to see how much time it could really save. I know the whole mirror of ra, boss troll, staff of change, phantom ship, sword of gaia, silver orb sequence would be the biggest time saver, along with skipping the tower of kol (sacred amulet). I feel that the biggest concern here would be leveling. You only need enough defense and HP to survive Zoma's first round attack, but Baramos and the Granite Titans could be problematic at super low levels. Also, while the run would be faster, I feel that there may be a huge loss in entertainment. Anyway, thanks again for watching. If someone decides to try a glitch run, keep us informed!

Great job finding this. That is an amazing glitch. I back read most of this thread, and someone mentioned that you were stuck in a tile in a room you wanted to glitch. Would it be possible for an enemy to bump you out? Who is going to redo Zelda with the glitches? I'm sure it will obsolete the current run by at least a couple of minutes!!

Did picking up those fairies after some of the bosses take extra time? I could very well be wrong, but it seems that if they did take a few frames to get, you may not have needed them. The triforce refills your energy, but it doesn't take any extra time unless you're missing ALOT of energy. The fairies didn't seem necessary to pickup.

Yes vote and great job. I'll give a free economics textbook to the person who gets this game under 15 minutes. How's that for an incentive?!!? // Seriously, the textbook company reps just give them away like candy to grad students.

Even though this movie has been in the submission queue for about 4 months, this is the first time I've actually watched it. Yes vote. Catchy music when you win the game.

Thanks for the comments, all. Adelikat, I believe I can answer some of your questions, comments.
3) You should have the party members attack each other in pyramid in order to die quicker. You do this by selecting attack, and then selecting the arrow above the enemies's names, this will give you a list of your own party members to attack.
I had no weapons on my characters at this point. Attacking wouldn't have done enough damage to kill them, resulting in needless attacks taking time.
4) In isis - getting the 70 & 60 gold pieces were worth it?
I realized at the end that I had gotten a couple of gold chests here and there that in the end, were not needed. I got the gold early in the game because I honestly thought it would get tight at the end when I made the final big purchases in Samanao. I also thought that I would have to manipulate more than one monster arena fight. Getting 3 or 4 chests of gold is faster than manipulating a monster arena fight. However, upon discovering the HUGE payoff fight of 50,000 gold, those chests were obsoleted and a few seconds was lost. There were some chests other places too.
6) In Kanave, you moved past the shopkeeper and then euipped & used items. It would have been faster to do this while your movement was already stopped at the shop. You move a little and then do it again, again this cost time.
Noted -- although there was one time where (for some reason) I lagged when coming out of a dialogue box and a huge wait was needed to re-enter it. Moving avoided this mystery lag. I don't remember what town it was in.
7) If you have any control whatsoever on level ups, manipulating a stat to have NO gain is a nice timesaver too. Especially when you get 1 point of luck. Making that 0 will save about 1 second.
Interesting idea that I had not thought of. Bare bones level ups. Level ups can be manipulated by the turn that ends the fight, but I have a feeling that ending the fight differently would take longer than the time gained by a 0 stat increase in an attribute.
14) was casting infernos on the boss troll even worth the time & mp it took? or was it to get the right outcome? I know it is a long shot, but I REALLY want to see a thor's sword manipulated there :)
Casting infernos (for 9 damage points I believe) manipulated Blazemore into working, which obviously causes much more damage. :-) As for the Thor's Sword, I really wanted to see it too. Some info site I viewed says that Boss Troll has 1/256 chance to drop it. Try as I may, it wasn't coming, and I wasn't able to test all combinations of fight endings due to health regen. As you may have read in the discussion forum, at one point, I had the Boss Troll asleep, sapped, surrounded, and all my characters bikilled just trying different attack combos to manip a drop!
19) Ice clouds give you a snowblast sword, which isn't as good as the thunder sword (or thor's sword :P) but sells for 48,000 gold. Not as cool as manipulating a huge casino payoff but should cure your gold problems much faster (though a pain to manipulate). It would also save you from casting snowblast in the orochi fight.
I think it's Thor's Sword that sells for that much. The snowblast sword only sells for the same amount as the Golden Claw, 11,250 gold.
24) At the island where you get the phoenix, there are glacier bashers that leave the mysterious hat which reduces mp consumption. Perhaps manipulating one of those could save some inn usage later.
This idea was actually tried unsuccessfully. I realized though, that the only inn I used after Ramia was in Tantegel. Using the inn (and visiting town in general... note the extra step and pause in town) manipulated favorable enemy movement. The hat would have saved MP, but due to the fact that everyone used MP (and took some damage), I'm sure that the inn (and no manip) is faster. As another aside, glacier bashers have a large amount of HP!
25) Why get the magic bikini if you aren't going to equip it and see that hot 8-bit pilgram booty? ;p It has the same effect as magic armor, so it wouldn't hurt you to have it equipped. So equip it sooner rather than at the zoma fight where we barely get to see it anyway. Though if you were ever to redo it, you probaby wouldn't be able to get it anyway.
Basically, it is equipped just before the Zoma fight because the Magic Armor protects against fire which is cast by Baramos Bomus.
26) In the sacred amulet tower, why did you use the acorns of life and only get 2hp? Is that even worth the time it takes to get & use it? Same for the 1 that gave you 4hp. You have time before you need use them, why not wait until a better opportunity when it will give you 5hp? 27) Intelligense & vitality seeds are actually useless and give you less mp & hp rather than more. Unless you are manipulating luck, don't take the time to use these.
Using all the acorns manipulated the fights (many babbles in the top floor). I wasn't concerned at this point with maxing HP out for the hero. As for point 27, I was always under the impression that using Int and Vitality seeds had their effect at the next level up. It "added" the int or vit you got from the seed onto the level stat to create a higher MP or HP. Also, an intelligence seed is used to manip the bomb crag fight.
I think this run is more of a test run than a polished TAS. The problem is that you don't have enough control over the rng in this game to ensure that these improvements wouldn't get negated by some bad luck.
I'd consider it somewhere between a test and a polished TAS. It is definitely improvable in a couple of places. I believe this is because I learned so much about the game while making the TAS. It reminds me a little bit of the original Final Fantasy I TAS and the FFMQ TAS. Both were originally accepted, but then greatly improved upon.

The town didn't grow fully until I chanted Return. I figured that would be a good time to regroup and gamble. On a completely unrelated note, I just discovered that I can get a Magic Bikini for a cost of about 8 seconds. Should I do it for the entertainment value?

Well, I ran into some troubles here, and was looking for some advice. I did the whole "play at 200% speed just to hurry and see how far you can get" thing, I was able to get past Zoma's three henchmen without collecting SOK, AOR, or SOH. However, Zoma annihilated me and there wasn't really much I could do about it. I was thinking that the Zoma fight would have to be different -- since his attacks are so powerful and I can't put him to sleep, I may have to just rely on attack and not on status spells. Weakend Zoma has zero lightning resistance, so Zap might work well, or the Hero could chant Healmore if I get him to level 29. My pilgrims could each chant Healall, which does anywhere from 90 - 110 damage. The wizard could try some attack spells, or use the sage stone, but would most likely be my "manip" character to make Zoma just use his freeze wave twice. If I can do this, the game is done. I'm considering giving the meteorite armband to the wizard for this fight. (Although there might be a 1/2048 chance that Baramos Gonus will drop another one. :-P) However, would you guys suggest getting the Sword of Kings? It seems a bit far out of the way, and if I'm not attacking Zoma with a sword, it may not be worth it. The Armor of Radiance isn't too far out of the way, and adds 20 more defense points to the hero, so it may be worth it. I'll keep messing around some more tonight and see what happens. EDIT: Strangely enough, it also seems like the game treats Alefgard as a dungeon. I can't seem to "wait out" enemy fights.

Oh heck, which flag is the "Zoma is dead" flag? Imagine jumping down the pit of Gaia, landing in Alefgard, and immediately being given the title of Erdrick! :) Roll the credits!
Precisely. Don't just glitch part of the game when you can glitch it all away! I think it'd be pretty sweet to see a TAS that won DW3 in about 16 minutes using that glitch. That'd be pretty crazy. By the way, here is another WIP. Baramos slept for 2 whole rounds!!! http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~dbrown3/DW3Baramos.zip Notes about this WIP. I earn just over 50,000 Gold from a single monster arena fight. I had to chant heal just once to manip a great Baramos fight. The orochi gets owned twice. I made the weapon and armor salesman in Samanao rich. I'll kill a couple of babbles in Alefgard to learn Healall for the pilgrims, most likely.

Remember guys, even in your glitched run, it may be a good thing to rig the monster arena fights.....
I support a glitched and non-glitched run

That's some pretty crazy stuff, Dwedit. Sorry if I missed something, but why did you take the extra two steps after your fortune was told? I assume that it was necessary because it takes so long to do. Is Assaram the earliest you can do this glitch? Could something weird be done with the party members at Louisa's place? I'll restate my opinion again -- in light of this quality glitch, I think there is room for two movies of this game. I'll do my best to finish the one I'm working on right now. ===More information for the pure run===
Healing and Medical herbs do the same thing to the RNG. Wizard's Ring and healing are identical effects in dungeons except the Wizard's Ring will make you fight the next fight one step sooner. Seeds appear to do have the same effect as chanting heal 2 or 3 times. Outdoor fights can be manipulated using items and time. The Boss troll is considered an outdoor (non-dungeon) fight. Dungeon fights can be manipulated by items, but NOT time. However, your timing on entering the dungeon does have an effect. I use this when I enter the pyramid.
On a side note, I had an incredibly easy time with the Orochi. Sleep works extremely well on him, as well as snowblast. I can kill him without him even touching me. As I mentioned last night, Baramos is doable on level 22 - 23, but full equipment is required, which is why I needed the huge casino fight payoff. I'll try to post a screenshot of that tonight. As I said in my earlier post, I'm not posting a movie of that because I played the necrogond cave, the last 4 orbs, gambling, and baramos at about 400% speed just to see if it was possible. I now know that it is. I definitely think I'll be able to get this run under 3 hours. I know that I can do Baramos. Sleep is an awesome spell to manipulate, and I think is absolutely necessary to use. The first round of any boss fight should have the hero use this spell, since it is worthless for him to attack due to enemy health regen. In the future, Zoma may cause troubles due to his finger wave attack that nullifies all status spells. ------------------------------------------------------- Other thoughts..... After much thought and consideration, I really believe this is the optimal party choice. A soldier would be nice to have so I could use the demon axe or even the Orochi sword, but he can do almost nothing to manipulate enemies in fights. Pilgrims are cheaper until Samanao and can use a multitude of RNG manipulating spells in battle. Also, they are fairly strong with the Zombie Slasher. With DW3 being the only NES Dragon Warrior game without a video on this site, I'm strongly hoping for a publication of this when I get finished. However, even if it does get published, I may soon start working on another video. I don't know if I'll be able to improve it, but I still want to try. Things I may try.....
Ledauphinbenoit's original suggestion of not getting a party until after the gold claw. Using herbs takes much more time than healing, but I think that may be countered if I don't have to revive 3 dead party members. Tactical changes such as one more or less level here or there. A different route after the ship. It would be worth it to try, but I can't think of a way at the moment to improve time by a route change alone.
I'll definitely keep working on this and keep updates coming periodically. Keep up the good work on the glitched version!

Yikes... I leave this thread for a day and it's full of bizarro item-transforming glitches!! Hmm.... who knows, maybe this game could be like the Legend of Zelda -- The Adventures of Link. The site could host a glitched and non-glitched movie. On another note, I have dicked around and found that the lottery occasionally gives a fight that consists of two healers and two metal slimes. If a healer wins, you'll win approximately 49,000 gold on level 22. This can easily fully equip your party. I did this, and was able to defeat baramos. (No movie of this, it was played very sloppily). The fight basically consisted of me putting him to sleep, and then doing status spells. The fight is doable if both pilgrims have a zombie slasher, the hero has the thunder sword, and all three are bikilled. Also, a successful blazemore spell doesn't hurt either.

The optimal time to level up is after you get the ship and before you do anything else. Are you planning on beating the game at level 22? Because going back for more is sub-optimal. Why not get every level you'll ever need all at once?
Metal babbles appear in the necrogond cave and will be much easier to manipulate. I've discovered that dungeon fights are easier (and quicker) to manip/predict than overworld fights. I'm going to hit a couple on the way through the cave, and even possibly try to get a couple in Baramos' castle. This will be quicker than hunting on the shrine island. Also, when I get to the underworld, MB's are VERY common north of Rimuldar and will be quick to get if I need. The only reason I stopped at level 21 before the boss troll is because that level gave me Bikill. I had to manip the 8 metal slime fight to give me 2 spells for the wizard that level, or else he would have just learned snowblast.
Ball of Light that would be awesome as well. Remember, Zoma does not lose half his HP - his stats just go down and his attack pattern changes.
On another party in a copy of the rom I named dwarrior3test.nes, I have successfully beaten Zoma without the Sphere of Light. Using SAP on him works pretty consistently, and lowers his Defense by 300 points!! For Zoma, I would imagine a good first round being Sap and a couple of other status spells working. But I need to worry about Baramos now. A good first round for him could involve sleep, stopspell, and Sap working, with the Wizard Bikilling the hero.

Ignore the last post. Well, read the information, but don't watch that WIP. Instead, watch this one. http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~dbrown3/DW3Gaia.zip This WIP gets the blue and green orb, and ends when I pick up the Sword of Gaia. I killed the Boss Troll with minimum trouble. I tried to get him to drop a Thor Sword, but it just wasn't happening. I even have a save state with him asleep, defenseless, and all of my characters BiKill'ed. The Phantom ship went by quickly.. I pick up some extra gold which I'll need later. On the way to Olivia, I fight some more metal slimes to level up the hero. I discovered this fight by pure accident when I ran my boat ashore. In terms of time, I'm about 15 minutes ahead of how long I originally thought it would take to get to this point. In playing, I've discovered (and since used) another way of manipulating the RNG. Example: Suppose there is one enemy. I have a pilgrim use Sap, and it is ineffective. My wizard then chants Blazemore, and the spell doesn't work. I reload, and try the pilgrim use Defence instead. Defence is also ineffective, but this time, Blazemore works. The two different spells caused a different outcome for the RNG, even though they were both used on just one enemy and both ineffective.

WIP Update. http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~dbrown3/DW3LVL20.zip This WIP is now TAS-played through to the Level 20. I kill Kandar, get the boat, and get the final key first. I then get the blue orb, and manipulate an interesting fight in the Navel of Earth cave. Watch the WIP and you'll see it.... I use the Magic Key in the fight to manipulate my level up stats. The magic key doesn't do anything, but it makes the Simiac fight one more time which uses the RNG. Incidentally, the Simiac is the creature I've chosen for my avatar. I next sail to Tedanki from Lancel. I want to get the Lamp of Darkness, as Metal Babbles come out at night more often. I'll of course pick up the Orb while I'm here. Next -- off to the leveling area. I fight mostly slimes, as babbles are tough to get. The movie ends when I kill my first metal babble (tremendous hit from hero) and all my characters are on level 20. As soon as I learn Bikill, I may actually try to fight the Boss Troll first. I think he may actually be easier than the Orochi since he doesn't breathe fire or attack twice. I guess we'll see.... EDIT: If you watch the video, you may notice I do some very unorthodox things during fights, such as casting what appear to be useless spells, or even attempting (unsuccessfully) to run away from a fight I want to win. All of these actions manipulate enemy turns. Some of the metal slime fights may seem 1 or 2 rounds longer than what you think they would be, but other attack strategies would have caused the slimes to run away. I use the sequence that kills the most enemies.

This weekend I will be able to play / test some more. I am intrigued by your posts, Catastrophe... Would the Chance spell be worth getting? If so, would it be worth getting right away as you say so I can ignore the Final key? Also, as another reminder, boss battles can be manipulated into have a "good" first round by using heal and wizard's ring before the fight. I recently heard of another glitch, but it would also involve a high level wizard. I've heard if you get a falcon sword to your wizard, and then cast transform into a powerful character, and you do double attacks for huge damage. I have not yet tried this, but will this weekend, hopefully. Keep up the great testing though, and I will definitely do the same! Maybe this run will just be the start of ways to try and break this game.

Yes -- I believe I would definitely get the Yellow orb last...just to make sure the town is fully grown when I visit it again. An odd question that I had wondered about last night... would it be worth it to pick up the lamp of darkness? It seems that metal babbles come out a lot more often on the island at night, and there are at least two places I need to be at night. (( Well, if I go to Tedanki at night first and then use the inn to get the lamp, I could use it for Samanao if needed to save time)). As for leveling, I would level a bit for the Boss Troll, then try and level on my way through the Necrogond cave for Baramos. Thanks for your helping and testing, ledauphinbenoit.

Pasky: You are correct about the Parry/Fight. I may not even need to do it at all if no one dies. I planned on doing what you suggested, though. Adelikat -- that seems to be a good route. The late new town visit will allow me to drop of the Vase of Drought and Magic Key on the Merchant too. However, if I go there last, I could also give him the Mirror of Ra and Sailor Bone and Locket of Love?? I may not be able to work on this project for a couple of days now that the week has started. I've got some big assignments due here first. Yay grad school.... Thanks for the input and support!

New WIP posted. I busted ass on this all day, and I got the ship!!!! If you watch this WIP, note that the Kandar fight (and everything after it) isn't TAS-style yet. When I update this file, it will be the same moves, except frame-precise. http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~dbrown3/DW3boat.zip Fighting all those metal slimes was pretty exciting. There is a reason I walk around after Dhama for a long time. The slimes come out at night in the icefield near Muor. This is the point now where the game becomes extremely non-linear. I know I can level with metal babbles on the shrine island, but there are many other options too. Perhaps I should first get the final key? Ordering here will matter because of time obviously, and there a few items that I can't throw away, and don't want to spend time storing at the vault. By far, the quickest way to get rid of these items is to throw them on the merchant when I start the new town. I will already give him the thief key and royal scroll, but it would be great if I could also give him the magic key, sailor thigh bone, and locket of love. At this point, I'll need help and input from you guys. What route do you think will be the fastest? What level is a safe bet for Baramos? The only other random drop I can think of getting is a Mysterious Hat from a Glacier Basher. I can get it before Ramia, I suppose. /////////// Another glitch update. There is a glitch with the Silver Harp in the Monster Fight Gambling Area. If used correctly, you can earn a HUGE amount of cash, but I don't know if I'll have a use for gold if I make it to the underworld to get the harp. I did try this glitch, and it works.
