Congratulations on your work. I recommend Encoder to encode the video by using Snes9x WIP on googlecode, with Sync Sound on, because sound quality is much better than older version. http://code.google.com/p/snes9x143-rerecording/

o.O ... just o.O Congratulations on finishing this! By the way, Super Ultra Mambo-Tango-Foxtrot long level-ups in SRAM making movie is a sort of (semi)automated play? I thought that was very hard time. Also, what a good looking submission text! How I envy you! X)

A Comparison video made understanding details of improvements easier. According to the video, it seems that some improvements don't save time for some reason, actually (for example, bigger amount of Bowser's bounce in the final battle makes beginning of the last conversation be a few frames late.) Note: I haven't compared these on Mupen64, so I don't know whether that's correct. I enjoyed the submission very much anyway. Edit: I didn't make the video... just in case.

Recently I'm kinda busy, so I'm going to post my half-finished smv right now. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/619713038/Earthbound%20%28U%29.smv This movie was rerecorded from ElectroSpector's WIP about a week ago. It's a little faster than his movie. Differences:
  • Talked to Pokey from left, instead of down-side. ("Hey, Ness. Don't be rubberneckin' blah blah" scene)
  • Manipulated the move of families in Ness's House.
  • 1 frame faster cornering at this point? (not sure)
  • Will manipulate the move of Mrs. Minch if needed.
Excuse my too simple quick mention...! Edit: It's a quick test, may contain a mistake. Edit: I don't know exact differences between two movies :P Compare them yourself if you need, sorry! (>_<) Also, some clips Earthbound TAS guys already know: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wic2Kn1FOHM http://youtube.com/watch?v=F-nySRs9yT8 http://youtube.com/watch?v=TPH8MZqnQuA

You may know, but I finally figured out how Ness can pass through a cliff. Here are four examples of the places, that you can achieve the glitch. Video/SMV of example #4: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SfG_6adZDjk You can know which block can pass Ness or not, via Tile Editor of PK Hack. I colored maps in accordance with those flags. In general, you can pass the blue spaces, and cannot pass the red spaces. As far as I know, the glitch is done by two steps. First, you need to go to the blue space located in diagonal of the space that you want to go. When a blue space is sandwiched in red space (left side and right side), you can't go there normally. However, if you have proper subpixel conditions, you will enter there by being pushed diagonally, by the red block which is the next of the space you want to go in. Second, go straight as far as you can, then go to the direction you want to access (left or right, not diagonal). If you have proper positioning conditions, you will pass the wall diagonally as well. I don't know about the following things yet: * First blue space must be sandwiched by red spaces or not? (As far as I tested, the glitch doesn't work without the two red spaces) * All of the examples above pass the wall upward or downward. Is going leftward or rightward possible? Thank you for reading broken explanation. I hope someone will describe them better :| Edit: a little interesting clip from pirohiko - http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/930002544/slide.smv Edit: Peaceful Rest Valley + Wall Glitch http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wic2Kn1FOHM

As I tested in some places, the photographer cannot be avoided.

Also, if you skip the spot after the pyramid, what happens at the end of the Master Barf battle, and can you still teleport later in the game?
I don't know about Master Barf battle, but I guess the skip disables teleport for long time, too bad. Edit: I couldn't win Clumsy Robot (*>_<)o http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/861966759/earthbound_clumsyrobotskipfailed.smv

The trick should allow us to skip more battles as well, for example, in Pyramid. Edit: had forgotten this one, http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1563103510/earthbound_stutterwalk_aftermonotoly.smv ---- Recently, a guy named さとちゃん (Sato-chan; aka. 310CH) has posted a low-level (semi-)TAS of Mother 2 (J). It contains some noticeable mistakes or redundant parts (because his first attempt was not even a speedrun), but some of strategies look interesting for me (I haven't finished watching the video yet, though). If you want to watch, click the following link: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm4628915 Hint: as usual, you can hide out the comments on the video by clicking the bird icon located in bottom right. The video inspired me, then I found these applications. Edit: Starman Jr. also can be skipped by using stutter-step.

Abruptly, I've found a way to skip Buzz Buzz in Pokey's house. How of the method isn't complicated at all, so I assume you guys have already known it. Anyway, I'll show it, here's the SMV (just modified ElectroSpector's quick WIP... thanks) http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1180396010/EB_soundstoneskip.smv I'm looking forward to new runs of Earthbound all the time. Edit: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/841362111/EB_BuzzBuzz_skip_v2.smv even faster, still test quality though. See More Applications...

Is it ok to switch the emulator (in this case, from 1.43 + v12 to 1.43 + v15.2) and keep the movie file or will I have to copy my input to a movie file of the new emulator?
The only movie related change is a fix for rare desync on reset recording (v15). In most of cases, you can play even a v9 movie. ex: my Kirby's Dream Course run. So, it's not a problem at all.
MUGG wrote:
(Or would it otherwise be a good idea to use 1.51 instead? What are the advantages?)
  • In general, emulation of 1.51 is more accurate than 1.43.
  • Probably 1.51 has less desyncs than 1.43.
  • Currently, 1.51 has no lua script feature...
@amaurea Hm, I don't know much about lua script, though, I'll keep it in mind anyway. *I don't know whether DeHackEd's official lua version does that.

After an hour of playing, I got nothing :( According to youtube comments, the glitch seems to happen when Kirby and/or Helper has a hammer or parasol. Some of posters looked using ZSNES, so I played the game on both Snes9x 1.51 and old good ZSNES 1.42, also I used (U) ROM. I thought the game was pretty laggy before happening the glitch. It may be true, may not.

SecondThird comment, and voted yes despite not having watched it (I felt like it) Joking aside, I have watched the run. I liked the finish of Ridley fight. Really nice improvement, Cpadolf! Edit: I'm not the second.

Snes9x 1.51+ v3 - Win32: Removed bad fullscreen fix for the time being. As a result, the main screen will be lost when you change display settings via Display Properties. However, you can restore it by opening Display Configuration dialog. It's much better than crash, anyway.

Minor changes. Newest changes in 1.43+ v13: * Win32: Added movie fast-forward function in the menu. * Win32: Removed bad fullscreen fix for the time being. As a result, the main screen will be lost when you change display settings via Display Properties. However, you can restore it by opening Display Configuration dialog. It's much better than crash.

I just thought it would be convenient if an emulator had a built-in movie editor. Then, I made a virtual screenshot by using great mspaint.exe™ My Thoughts / Pieces of idea
  • Built-in editor will be useful in a making of pseudo multi-player runs.
  • Piano-roll is one of the user interfaces which allows to edit input intuitively.
  • Input List (left on the picture) may sometimes be useful if it allows to edit a movie only with typing.
Note
  • I've never implemented a feature like this. Also I don't know whether I will do such.
  • The virtual screenshot is based on MIDI sequencer Domino (it's very similar to my favorite sequencer, Cherry).
  • I know a player who makes a TAS only with TAS Movie Editor (s/he uses an emulator when s/he watches his/her work, of course). That's why I thought about a possibility of built-in movie editor.
Sorry for talking in a rambling way. I wanted to write down what I had thought. If you have a question, suggestion, criticism, etc., post it. I'm interested in it. [hidden]I wish someone will implement such a dream feature.[/hidden]

A stupid fix for fullscreen seems to cause another glitch. I'll look at the problem, hopefully. About movie sync settings, it's intentional behavior (same as 1.51). If you change them, you will get a desync, if they are important for a game. If you still want to unlock them, I may add a option for it.
