Japanese text, a door, more text, a red thing, some more text, a green thing, text text text text, the door again, a woman (with text), credits. I can handle 12 seconds of incomprehensible nonsense, especially if it's glitch exploitation; buying the game-winning item for $0 in a shop... <3. Yes! =)

I think this should be published so people who hate themselves can sit and watch educational and often interesting information fly by much too fast to be read. Additionally, I think the typical masochist would enjoy the migraine that'd follow. How about we start a new thread exploring the intricacies of dynamic programming and, in particular, how it relates to this game, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, people, I can't believe so many are voting yes just because it's a technically impressive achievement! The run is completely unwatchable for a normal human unless you slow it WAY down to read everything, but then you'd probably scale the total length out to 10 hours. Nothing personal, Bobo - and I do wholeheartedly recognize the effort invested in making this - but I vote NO on account of the fact that no sane person would ever watch the whole thing. EDIT: I just want to add that I really do think this is an impressive feat of engineering, and I have no doubt that it was a stimulating exercise in computer science and combinatorics in general... IMHO though, the result has zero entertainment value, and I just don't think a run should be published on technical merit alone.

Yeah well, I think legendary awfulness should get special consideration! I vote yes AGAIN but please please please please please, no more baby moses. Please.

I agree with sgrunt; what a shame it'd be if, in the end, all three submissions are rejected for bad game choice... maybe that issue should be settled before the frame wars get totally out of hand?

Plus the new glitch is neat. I vote "yeah, whatever, just make it go away".

I disagree, I think that the quantity of eggs in this run is quite reasonable.

HOLY CRAP I knew it was coming but then I forgot about it and went to the site and there it was and OMG I'm watching it today. Regardless of how awesome it may be, there's no way I'm voting yes until you return my hat. Also is that you in either of the first two screenshots?

I loved enjoyed played hated this game back in the day, so it was nice watching Brandon destroy it. The youtube commentary was really a nice touch, and is generally a really helpful bonus for any TAS, as it kind of correlates the submission text with the actual run in real-time, and makes it easy to appreciate the degree of effort invested. I'd love to see such a thing on more subs. Also - I love the to-the-wire timing at the very end of level 42 (27:54), looks like Wile E. Coyote was a millimeter from maiming you. (yes vote)

Thanks for the encodes ferretfaucet!! I'm amazed at how quickly you were able to render them. Anyway, as one who has zero familiarity with the game and could not possibly identify unoptimized segments, I'm left with the facts that (1) watching a play-through of this game is entertaining, and (2) it was completed considerably quicker than the current unassisted record. Thus, I vote yes. A screenshot suggestion (@ 0:42:00) :

I'm giving this an auto-Meh based on [its length].
As others have already said, that's really unfair. I don't think that "meh" = "abstain"; if you want to abstain, then it'd be better to just abstain. =^P Anyway. I quite like having these ultra-long runs of games I've never played going in the background whilst working, to sort of keep me company and give me something to listen to if I'm not in the mood for music. I've never played BOF-3, but I'll try to pay enough attention to offer a reasonably informed vote. EDIT: I know it'd probably be a ton of work, but is there any chance of the author making an audio commentary? It'd certainly aid the viewers - especially those who've never played the game - in appreciating such a complex run.

It depresses me that both SDA and TASVideos have this strange subjective attraction to "entertainment" versus speed and somehow weigh them against eachother as if that is a fair system. Publish the fastest run. This is the fastest run.
I understand what you're saying, but I don't really get what the whole POINT is if we aren't primarily concerned with the "OMG AWESOME" = "entertainment" factor. For example, say there's totally awesome, massively entertaining run 'A', then along comes less entertaining but slightly quicker run 'B'. I personally don't give a shit about 'B', because if I'm not as entertained, then - for me at least - the time is better spent watching 'A'. As one who doesn't make TASes, my reasons for frequenting this site are (1) the movies are *entertaining* and often extremely creative, and (2) I like the community - you guys are great. That said, isn't it most important to publish TASes that *everybody* can enjoy and appreciate? EDIT: Also - I just wanted to repeat the following, since - I think - it's an excellent point that neatly sums up the problem with this submission (not sure whether this was Nach's intent):

Holy freaking crap, 12 pages of comments! Wow. So. I personally don't think such a marginal improvement should necessarily qualify this for publication. Thus, (for me at least) this leaves the difference in entertainment value to consider, and I agree with the sentiment that the new camera work is on the irritating side, so I vote no; I think the current movie with its non-irritating camera angles is just fine.

I remember playing this game on C64 like 20 years ago. I was rubbish at it, and never got to the end... if only I'd known that all I had to do was web-jump off the screen into the wall! Yes vote, of course.

Concerning the ongoing side-issue of time travel, my own personal (totally ignorant) belief is that it's impossible to go backward in time unless you're able to pop a new universe into existence having exactly the same initial conditions as this one, fast-forward it to the point you want to travel "back" to, and resume from there. This is, of course, completely ridiculous, but I like thinking about it. =) Anyway, on the matter of TAS + real life, I think it totally SEEMS like a great superpower to have, but is it really? In particular, the ability to load a save state sounds very appealing to me, because then I could just go back and save a friend of mine who, a couple weeks ago, was simply standing on someone's lawn when a drunk driver went off the road and killed him. That said, I think what I'd discover very quickly is that I can't just save one person here and there without feeling guilty about not saving everyone else. Every time I'd read an article about a similar incident - no matter how far away - I would probably feel like I have to load a save state and save that person, too (or live with the regret of not doing it), and in the end I'd have accomplished nothing of substance in my own life, using my non-super talents. Thus, my opinion is that having such superpowers would prove to be more of a curse than a blessing.

OK, you're 19? Guess what? I'M 29 AND I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE! Please forgive the caps. I can name a few things that I do well, things I really enjoy, but as of yet I haven't found a way to spend most of my time doing them. I totally understand how you feel... when I was 19, every time someone would come along and accomplish at age 12 what I still couldn't accomplish, I'd feel pretty crummy, and seriously question how I was spending my time, and whether I'd ever amount to anything. Sometimes I still ask that question, but you know what I discovered one day that changed everything? I felt crummy because I assumed that I had to *compete* with others, but I don't! To be happy, I don't have to "win", or be "the best", I just need to spend as much time as possible doing the things that make me happy, no matter what those things are. I can tell you with certainty that you should be proud of yourself for attempting to address this issue now. I think most people wait until much later, or worse, spend their entire lives not dealing with it. Don't pursue anything you aren't really into just because you want to measure up to someone else, or because family, friends, etc think you should... just do whatever it is that really makes YOU happy, and you win. I really believe that's all that matters. =)

You... completed four NES Mario games with just one input? That's... AWESOME. I didn't see that one coming. I think this should be published, even if just on the basis of novelty value, but not sure how it could be classified as anything other than a demonstration.
