I tried these out, but have not had any success so far.

More about this 1-player movie: If a new 2-player movie comes up and is accepted to obsolete the current 2-player movie, it shall as well obsolete this 1-player movie as long as the new 2-player is faster than this one.

I watched your WIP and I agree that it looked tightly optimized, was fast paced and overall entertaining. I just wanted to chip in and say keep up the good job!

I just used the same rom as the previous runs have. Just for testing, I downloaded the file named "Snake Rattle N Roll (U) [b2].nes" to see if that was the same as I'd used but the checksums didn't match which I find quite strange. How do you check if the dump is good/bad except from looking at the file name (which seemly can't always be trusted)? Doesn't seem to be a big problem with this game but might be in other cases.
Some old ROM auditing tools might regard some overdumped bad dumps [b1o1], [b1o2] and [b1o3] as different bad dumps [b2], [b3] and [b4] respectively, while they regard a particular bad dump ([b2] according to GoodNES) as the good dump. I'm not sure if these informations are up-to-date, but since this movie can sync with both "good dumps", I don't think it is a big problem. The currently published movie desync with the good dump at the beginning of stage 8, though.

According to the ROM checksum recorded in the input file, this movie was originally played with a bad dump "Snake Rattle N Roll (U) [b2].nes" that had been wrongly recognized as the good dump for a long time (just like the case of "Gimmick! [b1].nes"). However, it has been confirmed that this movie can sync with the currently verified good dump. I am wondering whether the author of this movie has any unrevealed info about the ROM version specially.

v8.24.0.393 "v24m": http://code.google.com/p/vba-rerecording/downloads/detail?name=vba-v24m-svn-r393.7z v7.24.0.395 "v24-alpha": http://code.google.com/p/vba-rerecording/downloads/detail?name=vba24-alpha-svn-r395.7z v1.7.2.560 (duh) "v20.2": http://code.google.com/p/vba-rerecording/downloads/detail?name=VBA%201.7.2%20v20.2.zip If you still remember v20, then v24-interim might remind you of it. The GB core of v24-interim was carried over from v20, with most of the fixes from VBA-M and a few fixes made by me applied. According to some tests, GB/GBC/SGB emulation is still inaccurate, but it is much better than v19-v23 for many games. GBA emulation isn't touched, though. The frame timing is changed from v20. Known desync issues in v20 are all resolved. For some reason, it can properly play 3 of the published GB/SGB movies that require v20, with only Pokémon Green out of sync at the end of the run. I made this unfinished release in the hope of finding out problems early. At the moment, Lua isn't supported for GB/GBC/SGB games, and game timing might change due to new fixes. Read Readme.txt for more information. And if someone can find out why Tonic Trouble has graphical glitches or why the Pokémon Green movie desyncs, please help! EDIT: The v23 branch is still being maintained, as the v24 branch doesn't seem to be always working better. The downloads are both updated.

If you'd like to do tests with v24, you can get it here. It's not yet finallized yet. I won't recommend recording your formal run with it.

There is a problem that stuff in glitched areas might be erroneously reaults of inaccurate emulation, which might cause completely unreal consequences in a TAS. I have recently come across a case where VBA-rr/VBA-M emulate glitched warps in a GBC game differently from other "known-to-be-good" GBC emulators like KiGB and gambatte do. Since we don't want to rely on emulator inaccuracy/bugs, I think it would be better if we could somehow verify this thing....

Comparing the comments on this movie with those on the latest Mega Man 2, Sonic 3, Mario 64 and <insert_your_favourite_game_name> movies, I cannot tell whether I see the truth. EDIT: I remember that I nominated the old Mega Man movie by Deign as a Recommended Movie (aka. Stared Movie). I did reconsider that when the old Mega Man 2 movie was improved after a Star was given to the old Mega Man movie, and I supported the decision of reassigning the Star to the Mega Man 2 movie. Now this new Mega Man movie is published, but I don't think the Star stolen by the Mega Man 2 movie shall be returned. And alas, I seem to have been commenting too unconstructively. Never mind.

This submission makes wonder, which of the two playable character in this game is optimal to use for speedrunning, Rockman or Forte? The answer affects all publicated movies of this game.

Due to some unsolved problems, v24 isn't going to be released anytime soon (this year). And I think we shall still accept runs made with certain old versions (v19, v21, v22, v23, and maybe even v20 as its GBC timing is similar to that of v24) of VBA-rr in a considerable period after v24 is released and adopted here. However, I do realize that it doesn't look nice if a run is obsoleted by a longer one whose additional length comes from the "more accurate" emulation of the game. Therefore, I can release a "preview" version of v24 if you wish to use it for this movie, but I cannot promise that the timing of this game would remain the same when the formal v24 release is out. :p

That's how you made the Final Guard demos so quickly? I should have figured that out according to the incredibly low rerecording count. :/ Aww, I forgot to thank you for the demos in my submission...

Boss Rush runs have the problem with goal definitions (realtime? Lv99? OoB into BR? OoB within BR?), and one can even get a ridiculously low time record with memory corruption....

I've been thinking of this for a long time: the "less-glitched any%" run doesn't provide much new that the "100% souls" and "glitched any%" doesn't. Could the "less-glitched any%" category of this game be deprecated in favour of other more potential ones such as "Julius all bosses"?

No need to be afraid about bots because refill manipulations are optimized and played by a hand and for a good reason too, only ones with bots are DelayStageClear glitches which are impossible to perform without them. Yes, DelayWaterCurrent is possible without any botting, you'll just need to get NMI's NEXT value to "1" which was somewhat easy in Iceman stage because conditions there was more better than we expected. We tried to keep eye on rerecord count because a few people requested to keep bot recordings safe too. Since I had to go out from school apartment because of autumn break, I forgot to save my record log for W1's DelayStageClear and I only remember my first botting took something like 50 000-56 000 rerecords and second attempt took more then 100 000 rerecords so I didn't include them in the run. Own personal playing and optimization took around 60 000~70 000 rerecords.
How many rerecords were done by the bot? In my opinion, you should either substract all bot-rerecord counts from the run, or include all of them in it, instead of only including some of them. I incline to the former choice because you don't give credit to the bot(s) who did 99.999999% of the whole job as a main author(s), though. Yes vote for great justice, anyway.

If my memory serves, there is a flag indicating whether you are playing in NewGame+ mode, and if you do, your have bonus chance on getting souls. That flag must be the 0x020000a1 value. So far, the only uncracked thing about random drops is heart.
