I just wanted to give an update, so I don't lead anyone on with false hopes: I simply don't have the time I need to invest in this project to make a quality run. Between working 50 hours a week, girlfriend, and other stuff, I just can't find or dedicate the multiple hundreds of hours it will take to complete this. That, combined with the difficulty involved with simply getting the game to run in the emulator and inevitable savestate loss/overwriting problems, I just can't do it. Sorry guys.

please give me more insight about this hack. I'm convinced that my use of it is preventing my movies from playing back properly. When you play back a movie, do I need the hack always on, always off, or what? If I toggle the hack while recording a movie, does the playback of that movie toggle the hack at the same time? There seems to be a relationship between the frame counter flashing red/white with the game freezing. When the hack is off, and an event (door, cutscene) happens, the frame counter flashes red and white every other frame. When the hack is on, the frame counter does not flash and the event can be done. What does it mean when the frame counter is red? also, I have never logged into irc before, but im familiar with using a unix command prompt. Ive seen one of my coworkers with an IRC chat in their session, so it must be possible to connect that way.

Where can I find typical settings for PSXjin? Or even better, for Resident Evil games? The RE3 submission contains no information regarding this. Also, I'm having an EXCEEDING amount of difficulty simply trying to play the game. Half the time, it works, the other half, it never loads. When it does load, its visually and audibly obvious that the game isn't running at full speed, which concerns me. Maybe RE games have cutscene/movie problems. I'm not sure. edit: ok. I've worked out the kinks, and I've figured out why it appeared to be running slowly. Are theyre typical settings I should use? is simply hitting the "nice" button on the graphics config not sufficient? I have picked options which explicitly say TAS safe

Well, I read that, but it does not answer any of my questions. psx games do not adhere to romset notation, as far as i know. So, the b1 o1 stuff is irrelevant. It also makes no mention of file types. I have a sneaking suspicion that of ISO, BIN/CUE, IMG/CCD/SUB, one of those types is better than another. Also, why does it appear that PSXjin wont even load my games? I've tried multiple games, and I believe that I have configured everything that is necessary. But, open disc / select file / close disc does not cause the game to start. edit: it appears that only PSXJin doesnt like my isos. ePSXe does however, which confuses me. I'll attempt downloading re-dump quality isos for this game and use them.

so is there seriously no one doing this run? If not, I will work on this. Any insight? I am moderately well-versed in this game, but not so much on exploits. I am going to watch the SDA run, critique his route, and make mine accordingly. But short of micro-optimizations and the best route, I dont know what to do. The last time I made a TAS, people didn't even look at the memory dump thing or whatever that tool is. edit: where can i find info about commonly used emulator functions for TASing? also, i didnt see any rules regarding what kind of image file / rom to use. I have the NTSC-U. I'm not sure if the dual shock or not dual shock version is better. I'm still in the planning phase.

This is very optimized and technically impressive, I will agree with that. But no one has mentioned that he is literally staring at the ground or a wall for 90% of the game? Extremely boring to watch.

I really enjoyed the part where, instead of finishing him, you turn into bo rai cho and then just throw up on him. genius.

any progress with the emulator problems? metal gear seem to have a history of being one of the last games with runs being published for their respective systems lol.

thats a damn shame. I was all hot and ready to do this. :( edit: i wish adelikat allowed this video to be downloadable. All the megaupload links to the encode are dead. I hate watching streaming video. I would much more prefer something I could watch through wmp or vlc so I can easily seek through parts.

Sorry to thread necro, but its been over a year since this topic was posted, and I don't see a run of this game on the site. Could it be that its ACTUALLY taking that long? or have all the prospective runners given up? I think I may take it upon myself to give this a shot then... This run absolutely must be on the site.

Pretty well done run. Were some of those ammo pickups absolutely necessary? voted yes.

I never found much of an issue, just because the game starts with a random state doesn't mean it CAN'T start with the same state as the emulator does.
The game can not be infinitely random because there must be a memory limitation on how high whatever number is generated can go. because the game must be finitely random, then at least 1 of these random startups will coincide with the initial state of the TAS. Therefore, TAS's are possible on real hardware, and this entire thread and closing of the site is for nothing. case. in. point. edit: read the front page. got it.

This is a joke, right? We make amazing works of art that continuously challenge people to "play outside the box" for seven years, while entertaining thousands, and now it all goes away because one guy is hung up on some conceptual TAS nonsense? Ive been on the site since 2004, and never have I read anything about how the entire framework of TAS "idealogy" hinges on whether its possible to recreate it on actual hardware in a speedrun fashion. From the beginning, there has been a stark differentiation between speedruns and TAS's. Its like comparing apples to oranges. They are different. As someone said before: their understood purpose is to entertain. I believe there was even a quote to this effect on the front page for a long time to steer away the people who accused the videos of being fake or fraudulent. Simply put: I am entertained. Everyone is entertained. I don't care about clock cycles, RNGs, acronyms I don't understand, or idealogy. I am entertained.

I have not watched yet, but I'm going to say that if you did NOT do the double flawless w/o blocking on the pit during an endurance round trick, then I'm voting ABSOLUTELY NO. thats a bug thats unique to the genesis version. So if you're going to pick this version, you need to take full advantage of its features. edit: ok, some pointers: 1) the flow of your matches goes flawless, flawless, flawless, no flawless?, flawless, flawless, flawless, flawless, etc. This is inconsistent and is out of place. "Taking damage to save time" sounds more like "messed up and didnt have a save state far enough back". Why are you saving time with blocking (in only 1 match) when the point of the run is entertainment first and time second? 2) you HAVE to fight reptile if you're going to do this run. This means you'll need to enter that cheat menu code and turn on flags 2 and 3. Then, just make sure you double flawless, dont block, and fatality on the pit. 3) you will also need to turtle the first match and lose on an interesting way. The way the maps flow, the last endurance match should be on the pit, but its in goro's lair because the match before goro is always in his lair. If you lose the very first match (or any match before the last endurance), the second endurance fight will be on the pit. Again, double flawless, dont block, fatality (with flags 2 and 3 on), and you will fight reptile. Except this reptile will be an endurance reptile, and the second one will look like sonya and has extremely glitched out graphics. This is a bug unique to the genesis version, and if youre going to do an entertainment MK1 run on genesis, THIS IS MANDATORY!

so how does this work? do your answers just need to have the correct answer somewhere in them? When you used "No smiling or winking", I actually guessed it was No smoking before it popped up because it seemed to have the right letters
no smiling or winking
no sm o king
am I on the right track? edit: lolll that must be exactly how it works. one of the answers was "sales clerk" and i put in "salmon escalator jerk", and i got it right. lmao

I cant view this movie in windows media player, but i can view the ninja gaiden TAS that was released after this one was made. I could swear i had the codecs i needed for this site, but i guess i dont. Can someone link me to a *working* download of the windows MPlayer installer? The MPlayer site links to an ftp folder missing the file.

I'll just hope you are kidding about duped items and bots...
in every game, there is a point at which you (the player) know nearly everything about the game and your skill level plateaus. after you know all the techniques and in-game exploits, the only way to improve how good your character performs is with what its wearing. duped items are duped for one reason: theyre a superior alternative to a normal item. thats why theyre duped. if they werent strategically better in some amazing way, people wouldnt dupe them and/or seek them. also, the game is 95% luck and time invested. the more time you invest, the more likely your luck is to pay off with an amazing item. with a bot, you invest many many times more time than you would with playing, which will theoretically yield superior items. also, there is a certain degree of skill required with configuring your program. its not just mindless item snagging. you have to be intelligent enough to tell the program what is good, and what to keep or discard, and establish an item picking priority when space is not available. yes, i understand that duped items and bots are "cheating" in the eyes of some people, but in terms of mastering the game, its just "thinking outside the box"

hmm... It could possibly open a locker in the armory that doesnt prompt you to use a key. That may explain why I didnt find the sidepack/mac10 in there. On another sidenote, I got to the end of this game, and the exit to the final boss room was not programmed in. So, you eerily just run around until the time runs out and then you die. That was probably the coolest way for it to end, becuase it surprised and scared the shit out of me.
