This post could probably also go in the Dolphin forum, but I think it makes more sense here. I recently dumped the MM10 Bass run using Dolphin and thought it might be useful to post some insights/questions about dumping using Dolphin. I'm sure Grunt can give much further insight on these topics. You can see the settings I used when dumping here. The settings image files are: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/807/mm10dolphinsettings2.png/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/810/mm10dolphinsettings1.png/ 1) I did as much as I could to get the highest quality. Ilari said that Grunt used a custom build of Dolphin to dump the other MM10 movie, so there might be other non-interface methods to improve quality? Are there any settings which can be standardized for dumping? Or will it vary from game to game? 2) Dump aspect ratio is weird in Dolphin 3.0. It was discussed in the chat the if Dolphin can output at HD resolution, we should use that instead of dumping and scaling up. However the only way I could get a higher res was to use fullscreen mode set to my desired resolution, and then tell the internal resolution to match the window size. If I could manually resize the window to the res I want, then I could have it dump correctly without fullscreen on. 3) The dumped audio file was longer than the dumped video file. I am unsure whether this is a Dolphin bug or just a result of the dump settings or something else entirely. It would be a real pain if every Dolphin encode requires fixing the audio. 4) While dumping the movie I opened one of the menus on Dolphin to check some settings. Apparently this broke something because then the message boxes for challenge achievements caused the screen to go black. Maybe it is best to not touch dolphin while it is dumping? Similar to how it is best to just restart dolphin after making config adjustments.

I've added a YT encode to the submission text. A few notes... I used the Dolphin version 3.0 build which diggidoyo posted above. Note that this is the 64 bit version. I was unable to get the 32 bit to sync. Here are the settings I used to dump: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/807/mm10dolphinsettings2.png/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/810/mm10dolphinsettings1.png/ I allowed Dolphin to open a new window and choose the AR. It came out as 640x360. There were/are issues with the audio file which Dolphin dumps separately. The wav file was longer than the video file. As a result, I used .AssumeSampleRate in AVISynth to get it to sync up correctly. This is probably not the optimal way to do this. Due to using a non-standard sample rate, I ended up using the HD/Streaming Media encoding techniques to do the encode rather than treating it like a 512kb as I had planned. It should work fine as a temporary encode during judging. I'm not sure I should be the one to do the primary, etc. other encodes since I really am not a "pro" encoder and don't know what to do to make sure the result is up to quality standards. I think it would be wiser for me to stick to encodes which are more standard. I hope this is helpful info for future Dolphin encodes. ;) Diggidoyo did a great job with this run. I hope he continues his work on Mega Man 9. I would also love to see additional runs of the challenges in both games. I think there are plenty of branches these games could see published.

No upgrades and no Zero parts does not seem to merit its own branch in my opinion. This submission shows less of the game than 1392M and yet only finishes about 1 second faster? Lots of missed shots and taking damage at random points seems sloppy. Voting no.

Here are the *correct* save files. http://www.mediafire.com/?cnp5g0b8b3x9e2g I was able to get both 1812M and this run to sync using the build diggidoyo posted above.

I chose to put them earlier due to the fact that gameplay uses basically the entire screen. I could not easily fit them in without blocking the character's entrance, the map screen, or some part of the action. Edit: If anyone has an issue with the subtitles, I can always re-encode this if it is published. Let me know what *you* would have done. Although it is not stated in encoding guideline, I have been told in the past that subtitles should appear in the first 20 seconds or so of a movie.

Here are the save files after playing 1812M. Edit: Removed link. Save files were not correct. You actually have to let the credits roll to completion in order to unlock Hard mode. This is long after the movie completes. I will post new save files when I play the movie again. You should be able to dump them into the save folder. Note also that you must install the DLC .wad to unlock Bass and Hard Mode. I have yet to get it to work, but I'm getting closer.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. I'm working on a YouTube encode for this submission. I will post it in this thread when completed. Edit: Added YT link to submission text.

Hmmm, why is the re-record count unknown?

Well, you can check out the Encoding Guide, which basically details how videos are encoded for this site. In a nutshell, we use AviSynth script files to do things like add subtitles or size the video up into an HD resolution. You can load AviSynth files with VirtualDub to see how it looks. Then use x264 to do the actual encoding (again feeding it the script file). AviSynth has lots of plugins. It looks like there is a TransAll plugin which includes transition effects like the one you showed above. You'd have to download it and configure it to see how it works, but it seems possible to use. http://avisynth.org/warpenterprises/

Not in VDub. You should be able to do this using Windows Movie Maker if you are still using that. Otherwise, you will need more of a full video editor like WMM to do effects.

I think I might be most impressed by how well documented the code is. As a non-systems programmer, I could actually follow what was going on. And for some reason, part of the music reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cscedJQ3PFU

If you are using AviSynth, you should rip the audio from the .avs file, not the movie dump file (.avi). Then it will incorporate the silence during your logo.

The script should probably be updated to use NHMLFixup2. This (hopefully) corrects some warnings Ilari was finding. The lines lua NHMLFixup-v7.lua sd.nhml sdaudio.nhml times.txt should be replaced by NHMLFixup2.exe -t times sd.nhml sdaudio.nhml

Bisqwit, What is your favorite book of the Bible? What is your favorite verse in the Bible? What book of the Bible do you think is the most important? Edit: Found answers to the first 2 on page 9. Thank goodness I started looking from page 1 instead of page 72

I've seen some discussion in the chat about auto-ripping the audio in Vdub. Here is a simple script I wrote: ripaudio.vcf
VirtualDub.Open(U"C:\path_to_avs\encode.avs");
VirtualDub.SaveWAV(U"C:\path_to_desired_filename\audio.wav");
Then call the .vcf file from the batch script:
"C:\path_to_virtual_dub\VirtualDub\vdub" /s ripaudio.vcf
You can even combine all the batch scripts into larger scripts. complete_hd_encode.bat
"C:\path_to_virtual_dub\VirtualDub\vdub" /s ripaudio.vcf
flac -8 audio.wav
x264.exe --colorprim bt709 --transfer bt709 --colormatrix bt709 --qp 0 --keyint infinite --output hd.mp4 encode.avs
mkvmerge.exe -o hd.mkv --compression -1:none hd.mp4 audio.flac

I would agree that Silius and Shatterhand are not known quite as well and probably have less bias. My main issue with Silius is that so many of the songs sound very similar. That's an issue any time you try to rank different genres of music though. For example, you could say The Beatles wrote the 10 greatest songs of all time. But then what about classical, jazz, etc. It's difficult to compare them. Overall, I would say the top 115 were pretty close to containing 100 or so of the best NES tunes, regardless of the individual placements.

I find it ironic that Silius has several highly ranked songs, but also has 3-4 songs in the bottom 20.

It's probably worthwhile to note that the hybrid script uses --sar 7:6 for everything. This is incorrect for all but NES/SNES NTSC.

Are the following assumptions correct? SD/512/10bit444 should show just the 2 screens, oriented either horizontally or vertically based on how the game orients them. HD is up to the discretion of the encoder to chose whether one screen should be "featured". Both screens should appear somewhere, but possibly minimized in favor of one larger screen, aka Contra 4 HD encode.[/list] Edit: Also, should there be spacing between the 2 screens? Or is that entirely up to the encoder as well?

That's correct. The problem had something to do with the YUV conversion, because using Grunt's new plugin without YUV there are no issues.
