Just a bit of an update since it's been a little more than a week of no activity. I've redone the third run (yet again -_-) because I forgot to record, wasting about 3 minutes of effort and 500~ rerecords. I'm currently about 9+ hits ahead of Dimi's 2508 playthrough, and hope to break 310 on Corneria. I'm a little past where Falco is saved [by you] and I've destroyed the four turrets. The problem is though, is that I'm not sure how Dimi spams laser charges so fast. I can do it moderately so (my first walkbot spam was relatively good) but my later ones against the walkbot proved to be very bad. I just managed to squeeze out one more hit than he did. Apparently, the Arwing isn't capable of shooting two charged laser blasts, so I'm forced to wait for the first one to hit before I can shoot my second charged shot. This definitely slowed me down and reduced my spamming to about 2-4 per walkbot with brakes. My only problems now are several things: 1. How much can you kill with a bomb before the waterfall? The video shows four, but I'm pretty sure it's possible to get more than that. 2. Whilst in the waterfall, what's the optimal route for kills? (My previous run stalled them so I could start taking them out easier by shooting my charged laser blasts at the environment [ie mountains] and at Falco's arwing. However, Dimi plays this differently so I need to re-watch it several times so I can see what might be better.) 3. The tree thingies. There's 6 of them, but taking them all out before they go back into the ground seems a bit difficult, even with an emulator. I can only hope that prefiring it will do the trick. With all this, I can hopefully break 310 on Corneria, which beats Dimi's playthrough of it by almost 15 hits. I'm sure I can optimize this run a little bit more by spamming the walkbots more, but that's probably the only optimization that can be done for Corneria. I've killed everything so far and gotten hit bonuses for most of them. Some enemies had to be shot down by regular lasers because I didn't have enough time to charge up, shoot a blast, and get bonuses for it. That, or they just weren't far enough for laser blasts to "detonate" near them. I'll post my completed run when I finish it, which should be in about... 9 hours or so because I'm at school right now. Edit: Forgot something.

The idea of playing through the game 4 times, hmm I don’t think that somebody is really interested to watch it 4 times, that would be over 3 hours. Can’t you just get all medals on normal while recording from the first reset BUT start your real run after that on expert mode while still recording but capturing the AVI just after you’ve beaten normal? Okay, that way we don’t have a perfect Mupen64 movie, …but who want to watch through the first 3 times on normal on Mupen64(even with 1000% speed that takes a looong time to skip) before he/she can finally watch the real high score run on expert mode!? So just save your recording with savegame after beating normal and you could do a high score run or just individual level runs and just capture the necessary things to AVI-format.
I can't do this, because Starfox doesn't save my game to the memorypak, so when I load it manually, no data is saved and all my medals for worlds are gone. One of the rules state that movie must start from the "power-on" state. Because of this, the only way for this movie to be published is if I record the whole thing. And the sad thing is, this movie might not even be published because TA runs on this are easier to reproduce than say, Mario 64.

Just wondering how many people speak what. Seems the majority of the people here are in Europe somewhere, and most likely enjoy coding, sports, or spouting random things in the IRC channel. =D And a lot of you seem to speak japanese. O_o 教えて下さい~ ^^;

An Aero Fighters TAS? You've got my full support in doing this TAS, because this has been one of my favourite games on the Super Nintendo. ^^ I know you'll do a great job with two players. Will you be doing a seperate video of the boss endurance mode? P.S. I'm working on my first TAS too, so just try your hardest and you'll do great! ^^ Besides, you can always re-record to make things better, so if at first you don't succeed, re-re-record again! =P

Thanks for the information Burning, but to be honest, I watched Dimi's videos several times before I started my TAS to know what to do, and what goals to aim for. However, I only watched individual levels and not the entire playthrough, which is why I missed the gates and didn't blast the environment more often. I would've never realized that the gates really had a purpose. This is, (although not entirely pleasant since I thought I did well) a surprise and an eye-opener hopefully providing me with a goal to work towards. The power of emulation can fix Dimi's run so that I can get at least 300+ on Corneria. To clarify something for you, the robots can be hit several times more after they're hit since their arms and head are destroyed (and thus, you can pass through them) but their legs are not, so that's what the charged laser blasts hit, and that's where the extra +1s come from. Thanks again for the help Burning, it's greatly appreciated.

I restarted my run again, skipped the intro this time (sorry for those who were bored by it), and have gained about 40+ more hits, which I'm quite proud of. This run so far takes no damage (well, I hit a tree, but no damage) so here it is! Hopefully it won't desync anymore.. orz Edit: Re-linked my movie so it's about 20+ frames faster. Thanks to Atma and Quietust for providing a much needed autofire button.

*bump* Here's the first Corneria run. Nrg and Vatchern pointed out some "minor" (well, a minor thing's pretty much major in this community.. bah!) details I forgot, but I'll fix that soon enough. Here is the movie so far! Input is greatly appreciated. =)

After talking it over with the people in IRC, I will now be restarting all my work and doing a 100% run starting from normal to beating [the crap out of] expert mode. This will require 4 runs to complete, so it will be lengthy, but hopefully I can keep it entertaining and amusing enough to keep you all watching. With a bit of Nrg's pestering, I have mapped out all three routes below. First Route - (getting medals for now) Corneria (Alternate route to get max kills) Meteo (Again, alternate route to get max kills) Katina Solar Macbeth Area 6 Venom Second Route - (will be mostly play around) Corneria Meteo (won't take alternate route this time) Fortuna Sector X Titania Bolse Venom Third Route - (should be the fastest run) Corneria Sector Y Aquas Zoness Sector Z Bolse (I'll be going to Area 6 three times if I DON'T abort and change) Venom Expert Route - Corneria (alternate route) Meteo (alternate route) Katina Sector X MacBeth Area 6 Venom With this, no worlds overlap such that I have to do a fourth run to get expert mode. I'll be attempting some stupid crap™ (Thanks GSG, you're a genius. ^^) to keep you all amused, laughing, and entertained. I have some ideas so far, but I'm open to more so feel free to add in something you'd like to see! Tricks so far: Kamikaze the boss (corneria boss, all-range bosses in general) Play through levels with first-person view (Area 6 or something) Minimial Health (especially for Solar) No Wings

Aaargh!! T-T I still can't get it to save.. The game seems to only save data if I load from a savestate, but it doesn't show my medals when I just load up the game... Soo... What do I do. x.x (I'm sorry, I'm really new to emulators with automatic saving, I'm used to savestates.) .___.

Is there a way to "restart" in StarFox? (Playstation start + select kind of thing?) I don't mind loading from my savestate, restarting it, and immediately movie recording. This way, I don't have to do a normal run, and all my efforts in this game won't have to be wasted in getting the medals again. Arcadic: Did you ever use save states? If so, can you tell me how you got them to save? Also, not having crosshairs makes it look more like a movie. =) I hope this can get cleared up because I'd like to start expert mode soon, but I don't want to break a rule.

Yay! ^^ Now all I need to do is figure out how to get my savestates engraved in the mupen64 mempak, then I can start my movie.. ;-; Can anyone lend a hand here? I have savestates, but I don't know how to actually "save" it. (Boo, StarFox doesn't ask for saves.) Thanks in advance! ^ㅈ^

Well, editting my post wouldn't have been a good "bump" so here it is. (Sorry for the double post, btw) Progress so far: - Completed regular mode and gotten expert mode - Played through to find "optimal route" - Found only 2 programming "errors", but one hasn't been tested, and the other is +11 hit for a boss if killed fast enough that I sort of noticed on my own. Alright, so now poses the big question. How should I do my TAS? I'm set on a high-score run, because a pacifist speed run would look pretty boring. This is what I'm aiming for, but I'd like a general feedback on whether or not it's a good idea, so here it is: - Takes no damage - Aims for highest hit count (no locked-on laser blasts) - Does not use targetting (Press start and then R, and you won't see a targetting box, although that doesn't mean it can't lock on) My "optimal" route is slightly changed, since Katina is MUCH better than Fortuna, so for those who are new to the thread: Corneria (Alternate route, will switch back to Meteo) [Goal: 330 hits] Meteo (Going for warp, but I'll head back to Fortuna) [Goal: 540 hits] Katina [Goal: 300 hits] (Will attempt no-friendlies killed and perfect accuracy) Sector X [Goal: 360 hits] MacBeth [Goal: 320 hits] Area 6 [Goal: 700 hits] Venom [Goal: 205 hits] (+10 if Andross gives hit too, but I don't think he did.) Grand total: 2755 (The record set by Dimi on Expert mode is 2556.) How's that sound? Also, am I allowed to start from expert mode? It'd be greatly appreciated since I've been using savestates the whole time since I can't work the save game feature. gg. >.>

Ahhh, I see. ^^ Have you looked into Motorola modems? I heard they're not bad, though I've never tried one (I have cable) so I can't say for sure.

Not sure if anyone else experienced it, but this site sort of "went down" on me yesterday for about 10 hours. Couldn't even access the main site either. So... what happened? Is it just me? Because I had a few friends check out the site too and they couldn't access it. o.o Just curious.

It's great to hear that you will be working on this :) There is an input plugin you can use for a keyboard / mouse combo. Im not sure of the interface but nitsuja knows it well.
Actually, you don't need a plugin. If you're using the mupen rerecording version, there's a setting where you can bind your mouse (x-axis up+down and y-axis up+down) or if you can't do that, you can bind it manually. Great to hear you're working on a SF64 run though! =P I almost have a completed game file, and I can send you that once I clear Bolse, Katina, and Venom. (Argh, gotta do ANOTHER whole run just to clear stupid Katina..) Anyhow, glad I'll have a good source of help if I ever get stuck, and hopefully vice-versa. =)

Ever since I joined this community a few days ago, I've seen this term used over and over, and yet I still don't know the meaning of it. I've tried to guess it, but to no avail. What does TAS stand for? I thought it stood for Time Attack for Speed, or Time AttackS, but that's not it either. T-T What is it!?!? It's driving me nuts! >.<

Is Dimi playing on expert mode? It doesn't look like it, which means you could probably get around 2,800~ (I think) with all those added extra enemies, though there's going to be a lot more flying crap and stuff to dodge. -__- So the only difference in expert/normal is the number of enemies, the wing when you hit something, and.. what else? I'm eager to get expert mode and have gotten all the medals except for Aquas. I'm not sure if it's my computer or a slightly defective rom, but I can't see anything at all. My video card's a nVidia 128mb one, so I doubt it's that.. In any case, it's frustrating me to no end because I end up with 129-137 hits after the boss. If anyone could possibly provide some insight as to why I can't see (I know Aquas is dark, but not this dark x.x) or what enemies I am missing, do tell! >.< Sidenote: After watching Dimi play and get 2500 on his regular Starfox run, I'm still wondering if it's worth restarting after checkpoints because hyper lasers seem to be more effective (and last longer) than 3 bombs. Then again, I'm sure someone can correct me on this and make me look stupid, but I'm open to insul - I mean, feedback. >.> Edit: Forgot to ask if anyone had problems with mupen64 and it's input. It doesn't accept more than two keys at a time for me. So I can't spam barrel roll, brake/turbo, and lasers/bomb/torpedoes.

That link doesn't work for me though.. otherwise I'd be watching it for a looong time studying Dimi T-T It appears it was taken off.. and besides, I need a really high-scoring video. This site says top scores are around 2,300ish. I only got around 1600 my first try (this is without optimizing my route, going for all kills, but to just beat the game and get medals so I could get expert mode) and I find it VERY hard to believe that someone can get 2,409. If anyone can provide a link to those videos with 2.3k+ scores, I would greatly appreciate it. Are there glitches in Starfox? I haven't found any yet, or at least none that can be applied to in-game.

I'm about to get expert mode now, but the real question is whether or not it'd be a good idea for me to aim for fastest possible time OR most kills when I make the video. If you don't know what I mean, I'm referring to the fact that in Corneria, the alternate route Falco gives you has more enemies than the one that leads to the normal walkbot boss. Is getting those extra skills worth those few seconds when you change routes? Any input is welcome! >.< Oh, and this is the route I'll be taking to get max kills: Corneria (Alternate route, will switch back to Meteo) Meteo (Some have argued Sector Y has more, I'll be finding out soon.) Fortuna Sector X (Maybe Solar's better? There's a lot of birds..) MacBeth (So I can get to Area 6, which has a lot of enemies) Area 6 Venom However, this is subject to change because I saw that Bolse seems to have more enemies than MacBeth, which makes up for Area 6 having more than Venom? Can anyone verify this? Also, if anyone else can suggest a better route (or perhaps the hard route, which I have no idea what it is) please do so! ^^

So I've basically just beaten through StarFox just to get a feel of it on the keyboard (No joystick! *cry*) and I'm feeling a bit iffy about it because it's not as easy to control unless there's a way to control the analog stick via mouse. o.o In any case, I tried to look for some runs/videos that could help give me a running start to get a "high-score charge-up" run with little to no damage on expert mode (with that said, I have to beat StarFox again so I can get all the medals.) Also, for anyone who HAS played StarFox 64 on Mupen, do you have problems skipping some cinematics? I can skip the Star Wolf intros, but I can't skip the cinematics for each new mission, and the briefing that comes before it. If anyone knows how to help or alleviate this problem it'd be greatly appreciated! I'm also getting some sound problems (where it gets all staticy) but I think the sound will be fine when I record the movie. So.. does anyone have any videos of high-scoring StarFox runs? I downloaded the European one at SDA, but I'm hoping for some more. ^^; Thanks! Note: Trying to find bugs/glitches in StarFox, but none so far. >_<

Is anyone else also getting some static in the sound effects after a few minutes? It seems to happen to a lot, and I'm not smart in "N64-emulator-operating" so I'm not willing to try and mess around [which will screw it up]. Help? =S

Oh, well. I've noticed that some time attacks tend to fire (and sometimes miss) extra shots that are done out of panic or something. In any case, this is great news. ^^ I'll try it out then, and see if I can find any bugs/glitches I can do in StarFox. How big are (on average) N64 roms supposed to be? Thanks in advance! P.S. Yay xD I can keep it. I like your Xbox one too. o.o PvP?

Hello everyone, and sorry to dig up an old thread. >< Being a recent lover of time-attacks, I've decided to start one myself and have chosen StarFox64 as my first one. Having read this whole thread, it saddens me to know most of it won't be as appealing since it's a side vertical..? uhh.. forward!) scroller like Gradius, but cannot be done the same way. (curse you speed upgrades!!) However, I would like to ask bisqwit if another sort of "entertainment" is acceptable by time-attack standards. How about StarFox64 done with limited firing? As in, one laser shot to kill one enemy? As a hardcore fan of FPS (especially Counter-Strike), it always gives me a sense of joy when I do a 1 shot kill on somebody. I'm sure it'd be the same way in StarFox if Fox McCloud killed everyone with great precision. Does anybody else think this is a good idea? Cheers to my first post. ^^ P.S. Is my avatar offensive? I'll remove it if needed.
