Hey guys, Looks like I got a lucky break. The professor for my night class today is away this week, so I'm going to take the opportunity to live-stream me finishing the TAS of Metal Gear Solid. It'll be right here in about twenty minutes if you want to a behind-the-scenes look at how bad my TASing is >_>

We're almost there! NOTE: Microstorage seems a bit screwy today so I uploaded the movie file to 4shared instead. There's just REX, Liquid and the jeep escape left! It's so close I can taste it!

Vulcan Raven has been vulcanized. I used a different Nikita path on Raven this time, which ends up saving a small amount of time, and I also equip Chaff grenades one frame before Raven dies because I need them anyway for the pre-REX hangar room, and I've Current development stage: redoing on Extreme with PSXjin v2.0.2 svn0, currently on Disc 2. Current WIP (video is slightly out of date, information below to be updated when I have the time and patience for it): .pjm file Link to video Progress: Vulcan Raven complete My in-game time: 0:57 My real-time (to help created a fairer comparison between my run and brazilianjoker's, my "real time" count as time after I have selected the Extreme difficulty and will be faster than my movie time by 975 frames): TBD In-game time equivalent in Matt Powell's 1:54:02 run for SDA: 1:14 Real-time equivalent in brazilianjoker's 1:49:01 on YouTube: TBD Ahead of brazilianjoker by: TBD. Ahead of Matt Powell by: 0:17 in-game time (although this is an inconclusive measurement as the in-game timer rounds off minutes in the in-game clock except at the very end of the game). Frame count: 208,384 (57m53s, does not include time spent saving in each WIP) Rerecord count: 28,465 Why the rerecord count is so low: lots of loading times and cutscene skipping. The ratio would probably be closer if you removed the cutscene load-skip/codec conversations.

Bring out the party hats and streamers, because WE'RE FINISHED WITH DISC 1! Link to video Here's the WIP in case you're interested. Note that I save after the first room of Disc 2, so you'll need to have both discs to watch it. Now I think would be a better time to encode, antd :P

Here's a tiny WIP, since Segment 9 of Matt Powell's TAS is rather short. Lots of optimal running, a few cool tricks, and hot camera dodging action await ye! There's no big hurry to get this encoded, I think we should wait until after the Hind D fight is finished.

It's great to see all those contributions to the Save-a-Frame Foundation ended up paying off! I'm eagerly awaiting this, and I thought I'd write this up while the YouTube video is loading. Expect a more detailed edit and a vote later today.

NEW WIP! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1815034524/metalgearsolid-bigbossextreme-tas-v3-theenglishman.pjm I save where Matt does at the end of his Segment 9. I gained a significant new lead over him (and a not-so-significant new lead over brazilianjoker) and now we're in the home stretch for Disc 1!

One category that I'd like to see for God of War II is "pacifist". You'd start from Bonus Play and do all you can to keep the inaccurate and unfair kills counter from rising. For one, the counter counts some unloading enemies or enemies killed by environment as kills made by you. Some of these instances can be got around by using different routes that don't make enemies spawn. In a TAS, you'd also manipulate luck to not have enemies die in places like Atlas' innards. It would be a pretty interesting run to see in my opinion. I recall the final kills count would be "only" around 100-150 when being pacifist - a pretty good day for Kratos I guess. I had written a bundle of notes regarding this run type, but those notes are long gone now...
I think it would be generous enough to get two categories for GOW2. Usually the only games that get multiple categories are those that fall under the grandfather clause, like Super Metroid.

After playing and glitching through the first two, I'd have to say that II would be more entertaining from a sequence break perspective. It would probably have to start from a maxed file for a smoother run (and iirc this needs to be done anyway to unlock the hardest difficulty). I wouldn't mind having a crack at this when PS2 re-recording has become a reality (or being part of a team for a run).
God of War II should really warrant two categories (new game vs. bonus play), while the latter lets you skip cutscenes, the former has some unique sequence breaks of its own. God of War I isn't too shabby either, I'd say. For one you can potentially skip every piece of magic in the game, and Blade of Athena, although skipping Poseidon's Rage might end up losing time in the end.

Another WIP. Sniper Wolf 1 and the torture room are complete, and I saved at the equivalent end of Matt Powell's segment 8. The only thing that bothers me is that the minute lead seems to have shrunk from 8 to 6. I checked both runs side-by-side and there's nothing he does faster; maybe it's a side effect of the timer only counting minutes and rounding off? Point is, I'm still in faster in every room than either Matt or brazilianjoker, and I'm not too worried.

I will also be posting another comparison video, this time focusing on Gray Fox and Psycho Mantis. Link to video EDIT: Just finished the backtracking for the PSG-1, but I won't submit to the forum until after the prison escape, where segment 8 of Matt Powell's run ends.

Finally beat Psycho Mantis. Changing the starting position just before the blackout seems to have done the trick.

As he mentioned in his post, the grenade trick only works when psycho mantis is shot as early as possible on each cycle, which he could do before but cannot replicate on the current run. He needs help to understand why that is.
That's mostly true. The grenade trick doesn't require the early hits, but obviously the early hits are, well, early, and very fast. The grenade tricks requires, iirc, 16 hits from the SOCOM before throwing the grenade.

Real Recorded Rape Scene In Film causes Uproar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddHxiDBVAvk The newly released IFC film 'Victim' has an extremely graphic rape scene that is causing an uproar amongst activist groups. It looks so real, that many are calling it borderline illegal. The rape scene involves a beautiful young girl and a transgender who apparently are not credited for their on screen roles. Gay rights activist and anti-rape groups strongly condemned the film last week. They sent a letter to the MPAA board asking for the elimination of the scene entirely, stating that the film was "exploitative and damaging for not only rape victims but also society as a whole." The footage, according to the groups, where real rape footage appears should not be seen in a R-rated film. Normalizing such acts in the mainstream can lead to it acceptance in society. The filmmakers have assured the groups that the scenes, although graphic and realistic, were in fact acted. They have agreed to meet with representatives of the groups and show them footage of the filming. The groups have rejected that offer and, according to many, "remain firm on their stance." They have stated that "films like 'Victim' and others that glamorize rape desensitizes audiences and exploits the trauma and suffering of rape victims." LGBT community up in arms over new IFC film thriller "VICTIM" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddHxiDBVAvk The newly released IFC Independent film "VICTIM" from directors Matt Eskandari and Michael Pierce is stirring a controversy with its premise of a Young Man kidnapped and forced to undergo sex change operation by a diabolical Doctor. Critics in the Transgender community feel their being singled out. John Edgarson of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Forum of America says, "People who see these mainstream genre Hollywood films take them as sacred truth and when the subject of transgender-ism is taken as a means of torture, it makes us less than human and serves to demonize a whole set of innocent people in the minds of the public. It is going to set us back years...The film should be banned for its blatant anti-gay sentiments and complete disregard for human beings." The filmmakers have spoken out about people unfairly judging the movie based solely on the trailer. They insist while it is a mainstream horror/thriller, "The film is not exploitative. The film openly deals with gender issues with rigor and truth. I had hoped that my 800th post would be a grand celebration of my conquering of Psycho Mantis, the hated luck-manipulation murderer. Instead, it is a desperate, lowly cry for help. Here is as far as I have been able to get on Psycho Mantis: or should I say, as far as I could get on this attempt. I'm not sure how I managed to do it last time, nor do I have the resources to simply load up PCSX and watch the input again. It's getting to a point where shooting Mantis early on every cycle (which can happen, as evident in my old run) leading up to the grenade trick is becoming a horrific experience for me singlehandedly. On many occasions throughout the creation of this run, I have asked others for help to no avail. However, I've come to a point where I think I need to stress: I need help. I need a second brain, or maybe ten, a team perhaps. It's gotten to the point where I have lost patience with being able to do this on my own. I'm not asking anyone to do the input for me, I just want a few more people on my side to help with research and whatnot. Please?

Recently I decided to take stock of just how many video games I actually own. The results surprised even me, and secretly I was thankful that I buy most of my games on the cheap and/or second-hand, otherwise I would probably be close to bankrupt. And the worst part? Of the 180-odd games I own across five consoles and PC/Mac, I've only ever properly beaten about 50. That's....rather sad actually. I need to put more energy into finishing games. My latest WIP, which stops (and saves, to show off the time) where Segment 3 of Matt Powell's run ends: having just entered the canyon, before crossing the minefield. I've also started linking to my latest WIPs in the OP, so you can always look there to find out how I'm doing. If/when someone (not me lol) does an encode, I'll embed that in the OP too. Let's hear some feedback, folks! (Sorry mgsfan, I'm not going to include the Docks improvement as I am thoroughly sick of the earlygame by now.)

I also wondered why you did not pick up the stun grenades in helipad? Are the stuns in the nikita area faster to get or are you skipping them completely and just luck manipulate the stairs? I also see before Ocelot you did not pick up the grenades. Getting them on way out?
I'm waiting for the Nikita room to get stunners. My item acquisition route will be almost identical to my old run. And yes, it's faster to get the frag grenades after Ocelot.

I tried that but link was broken. Also, sorry to say but you might need to restart your TAS again. The Dock is not optimal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFKGXPush4g&feature=channel_video_title His lift comes very slow for some reason (PAL I think) but it does save atleast 2 seconds if done right. This is judging from me playing on console and recording. TAS is maybe less than a second behind him.
I'll do some more testing and see how much time it saves. I'm also going to check to see if I can get the rest of the input hex-edited, because I won't really have much time to redo the rest of it.
