NES TAS of 2011
We allow libTAS to run PCem as a DOS machine emulator. Only TASVideos releases of PCem are allowed. Such releases are marked st to indicate single-threading - modification required for determinism, not available in the original PCem. libTAS is needed because PCem doesn't have any TAS tools. The setup required may be non-trivial, but game support is overwhelming, because PCem emulates much more hardware than JPC-RR does. See the relevant section of the Movie Rules: http://tasvideos.org/MovieRules.html#Dos libTAS specific rules also fully apply: http://tasvideos.org/MovieRules.html#LibtasMovies Guide on TASing DOS games in PCem+libTAS: http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/PCem/DOS.html Huge thanks to people who helped making this possible: keylie, slamo, Dacicus, Nach, and fsvgm777!

I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting. A fair amount of publications, both current and obsolete, are lacking a YouTube encode. In order to preserve our history on YouTube, I am calling for new encoders! If you have some CPU power to spare (and you're going to need it), feel free to choose any publication from the above list, upload your YouTube encode to your own YouTube channel as well as to a file sharing service (e.g. MEGA). Should you require any assistance, you can ask me (either via forum PM or Discord DM). For starters, here are the encoder guidelines. And here's a comprehensive publication manual. It also contains links to the current encoding package as well as the required stuff. Don't forget to make your own encoder logo. Note: If you wish to do downloadable encodes as well, there are published movies that can be re-encoded so that they meet our current standards. If your contributions prove to be valuable for the site, you may be promoted to the Encoder rank.

We now accept a new goal to Standard: Forgoes Major Skip Glitch. Runs that avoid large skips can be considered for publication to Standard assuming they are otherwise fastest completion. Details can be found in the movie rules. Suggestions for revisiting rejected runs can be done in this thread.

After years of work and months of public testing, we are finally ready to go live with the TASvideos rewrite! The new site will be launching on January 1st, at 4:00 PM (16:00) UTC. Transition time should take around 2-3 hours, during which the site will be down. The site can be previewed and tested at https://staging.tasvideos.org, though it may be down frequently as we get closer to the go-live date. Please continue to test it as much as you can while it's up, though! Keep in mind that this staging site is strictly for testing, and is not meant to serve as an active replacement yet. Data can and will be overwritten while we test things, so don't put anything meant to be persistent on there. Post your feedback and bug reports in the rewrite discussion thread and the Github repository.

TASVideos has just undergone a major overhaul. It now has new features such as https, dark mode, mobile friendly design and others. Expect some bugs for the near future and report them to https://github.com/TASVideos/tasvideos. Additional topics will probably be made in the near future for discussion of features and other things.

When moving to the new code base, we were able to copy over user passwords. However, the old password storage was not secure. If you log in to the new system, it will upgrade that storage to something safer. The idea was to allow a seamless upgrade as users could log in right away. However, I do not want to keep insecurely stored password for any longer than necessary. On January 23rd, I will remove old style passwords. - If you log in before this date, your password will automatically "upgrade" (It is still recommended you also update your password) - If you fail to log in before this date, you will need to use the forgot password workflow in order to be able to log in again (which will include setting your password)

Years ago, Mupen64-rr movies were disallowed from submissions, due to unreliable video dumping. The recent release of libTAS 1.4.3 significantly improved support for Ruffle, a Flash Player emulator in active development. Since then, several full TASes were made of Flash games using Ruffle running in libTAS with confirmed sync for multiple users, proving that it is a reliable and stable TASing workflow. Because of this, we are now officially supporting and accepting Flash submissions! For those of you interested in creating and submitting Flash TASes, our Resource page for Ruffle contains highly important information that you need to know: https://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/Ruffle You can get libTAS 1.4.3 here: https://github.com/clementgallet/libTAS/releases/tag/v1.4.3 Ruffle nightly builds are located here: https://github.com/ruffle-rs/ruffle/releases Also, check out our first Flash submission: #7368: rythin's Flash Meat Boy in 02:51.10

Have you ever thought "I want to be a Judge, but I don't think I have the qualifications or the time commitment to do it"? The new Reviewer role might be perfect for you! Reviewers make up a trusted panel of experienced community members, working alongside Judges to curate what content makes it onto TASvideos. They are not able to directly process submissions like Judges. Instead, their role is to streamline the overall judging process by providing first pass reviews of workbench submissions. Examples of what Reviewers can do include verifying that input files sync and checking for any obvious mistakes in routing and optimization. They are also given a much bigger voice in discussions over difficult judgements and possible changes to our submission rules. For more information on the role, there's an in-depth writeup on the Judging wiki page. If you'd like to be a Reviewer, please contact Samsara, and then expect to wait for several hours because she's really bad at both sleeping and checking site DMs.

As of today, submissions that rely on premade saves are universally acceptable and publishable as standard publications! Prior to this announcement, SRAM-anchored submissions were required to be entertaining enough to make it to Moons, and this is now no longer the case. The following changes are now in effect: SRAM will be allowed in standard publications.
  • Runs that utilize SRAM are separate branches that do not compete with or obsolete runs from power-on.
  • Verification movies are a hard requirement, and will now be included with publications. Arrangements can be made for submissions where a verification movie is impossible, however.
The following SRAM-anchored branches will be acceptable as standard publications:
  • Unlockable modes, characters, and difficulties that cannot be unlocked through in-game codes.
  • New Game +, including minor things like cutscene/text skipping.
  • Heavily glitched runs that rely on premade SRAM, i.e "save glitch" and "game end glitch" runs that are otherwise impossible to perform without a premade save.
  • DLC missions and equivalents such as E-Reader, as long as verification is possible in some legally hostable form.
Further changes may come in the future as well. For more information on how this change was presented and discussed, see this thread. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the Ask a Judge thread, or contact Samsara via PM or Discord!

libTAS is able to run MAME quite well, and we accept movie submissions made that way! We made a guide that should help you set it up: Wiki: EmulatorResources/MAME For movie submissions, general libTAS rules apply, and we have some MAME specific rules too. MAME emulates a lot of different systems, most notably Arcade machines, and their TASing is the primary goal here. But if a non-Arcade system is emulated well, without obvious problems, and we don't have an approved rerecording emulator for it, we're allowing that too! Just note that those systems will need a bit of review (and movie parser support).
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. Submission volume has been record-breakingly high, which is absolutely fantastic! I love it! The only issue is that it's overwhelming our current Judge team, and we're in need of more to help maintain the heavily increased flow.
  • You should have experience with high-level TAS optimization. Having published runs is highly recommended!
  • You should be an active and supportive member of the community. Judging isn't all looking at submissions, it's being a helpful guide for the community as well!
  • Joining our Discord Server is a requirement to be able to keep up with staff conversations.
  • Those interested in being Judges will be trained and advised in the Reviewer role first.
For more detailed information, please read the Wiki: Judging page. If you're interested, please contact me as soon as possible!

For the longest time, the record for most submissions in a single year was 540 submissions set in 2004, when the site first opened its doors to submission. For years since, the numbers consistently dwindled. This year however, we bucked that trend and have hit 541 submissions and counting. This is completely unexpected levels of growth. It is great to see the efforts put into improving the site have truly paid off. Thank you to everyone who uses our site, it is greatly appreciated.
