Another World, known as Out of This World in North America and Outer World in Japan, is a cinematic platformer that was originally created for the Amiga and Atari ST computers and was later ported to other computers and video game consoles. It was widely known as a watershed moment for cinematic gaming and computer graphics, having an epic scale to its setting and utilizing rotoscoped vector graphics. The story involves a young physicist named Lester Knight Chaykin, who gets involved in a particle accelerator accident and soon finds himself in an alien world. Lester must now find a way to escape the planet and return to Earth.

However, this is difficult due to strict time limits, a small amount of lives, and tough enemies that can either kill you or infect the food and turn it against you.

Rampart is a tower defense video game from 1990, released on many plaforms including the SNES. Along with the 2/3 player battle modes, the SNES game also contained a more expansive single player campaign with just under 50 levels. A Secret of Mana TAS has finally come to TASVideos!
Secret of Mana is a widely popular action RPG published by Square. It is internationally regarded as the first game of the Mana series, though the Japanese title is Seiken Densetsu 2, so it is the sequel of Final Fantasy Adventure. It utilizes real-time battles like many other action RPGs while including some unique features such as the Ring Command and multiplayer action.
Touch-me beats the game very quickly, using three players simultaneously and a whole host of glitches. For instance, many bosses can be hit for 999 instant damage using a charge counter glitch, and certain plot points are skipped. See the submission comments for more details.

Soul Blazer is an RPG made by Enix considered to be somewhat related to its predecessor: ActRaiser. The main character is an angel sent to destroy invading monsters and release the captured souls of innocent people.
In this series, every action in monster lairs directly affects non-combat areas, and vice versa. That being said, much planning was needed for this run.
The ending is very long and requires user input, so the movie's length is about 13 minutes longer than what might be considered beating the game. Regardless, this run is an improvement of 17 minutes over the prior run thanks to new strategies and a swap to the Japanese version.

At the end of Metroid II: Return of Samus, there is but one Metroid left in the universe. Bad things happen, and Samus Aran must once again head for Planet Zebes to battle Mother Brain, Ridley, and the Space Pirates. (And a few other bosses too.)
This movie improves on both prior low% runs (one that collects the Ice Beam and one that collects the Speed Booster) by collecting the Speed Booster and using various Shinespark-related glitches to render the Gravity Suit unnecessary, pushing the total required number of items from 14 down to 13. The author's comments are very detailed, and well worth a read if you're curious about just how everything was done.
There are a number of other routes that can be taken while still getting 13 items, but all of those routes require a specific glitch when fighting Draygon which gives you a non-infinite but arbitrarily large amount of ammunition; the item route in this movie does not permit the use of this glitch. If you would like to see this glitch, it is featured in the following (now-obsoleted) iteration of the any% run.

Super Metroid is a platform game and a follow-up to Metroid II. Shooting is also used to open up secret passages, some of which contain nifty bonuses, but finding most of them is required to proceed in the game.

Super Metroid made waves upon its release in 1994 for having a large continuous world open for nearly completely unguided exploration and a vast assortment of movement- and power-enhancing item upgrades hidden throughout.
Having transcended the need for all of that collection and exploration, Sniq and NobodyNada goes out of bounds to manipulate stray RAM data and force the ending sequence directly—within just a couple minutes from landing on the planet. As a result, no items are ever collected.

This run is faster than the previous run of the same, "1 player", branch by 02:44.73 due to aggressive luck manipulation aiming for speed shoes drops.
However, this run also obsoletes the "2 players" branch, because of how similar their action is, while here the overall pace is much faster and the movements are optimized tighter, so it obsoletes the other run by entertainment value.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors (1993), also known simply as Zombies in PAL regions, is an overhead run-n-gun with a unique style and an unusual premise: instead of killing bosses per se, the protagonists need to save their hapless titular neighbors, referred to in the game simply as "victims", before classic horror movie monsters such as zombies and vampires get to them. Having all victims die to a monster attack incurs a game over, but saving at least one is enough to advance to the next stage.
There are ten victims in every stage (some have extras), and this TAS aims to save all of them—including one that normally isn't intended to be saved. Both playable characters are controlled simultaneously, and the levels are routed to minimize the score tallies. As usual, Speed Shoes drops are constantly manipulated so that every stage can be run through as quickly as possible.
This movie by Allbeert beats the previous record for this branch by 16:15.97. We also have a single-player any% that kills off all unnecessary victims ASAP to streamline the process and, thanks to that, cut the run time nearly in half.

Kirby's Return to Dreamland is the 12th platforming installment in the series, and the first traditional Kirby platformer released in a decade after Kirby 64. The starship Lor Starcutter crash-lands on planet Popstar, and the extraterrestrial captain Magolor promises Kirby and friends a trip to his homeworld if they will help him find the scattered pieces of his ship in order to rebuild it. Like many Kirby antagonists before him, Magolor's true motives turn out to be nefarious, resulting in the Kirby gang once again fighting to save their galaxy.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland plays like a traditional Kirby game, seeing Kirby platforming through the game's 8 levels and inhaling foes to gain their powers. Elomavi flies through the game at incredible speed using the Wing copy ability's various fast-moving special moves (especially Condor Head). There is also a lot of flapping involved.

Watch as Mega Man takes on the latest set of Robot Masters and everyone's favorite mad roboticist for the tenth time in the classic series.
This run is played on normal difficulty (the highest available with no prior save data) and, amongst other feats, takes no damage at all (Mr. Perfect achievement), kills one of every enemy (World Warrior achievement), and manipulates more extra lives and large power-ups than you've probably ever seen before in a single playthrough. The final in-game time is 20:04.
In a fit of cosmic irony, this publication, which is the first for a current set-top console, is of a game deliberately designed to be a throwback to the NES days.

Eryi's Action is a sidescrolling platformer where Eryi must charge through a series of devious traps and enemies in order to stop Farta and recover her melon. There are so many of these traps, in fact, that the developers designated the game a "trapformer". In many cases, the most obvious path through an area does not work, and only clever thinking or trial-and-error will allow Eryi to proceed safely.
Aside from the traps, the game is designed to be very similar to Super Mario Bros.: enemies are defeated by being jumped upon, a flagpole must be reached at the end of each stage, and there are even mushrooms (which can be used as trampolines).
In this run, Bernka uses tool assistance to barely steer Eryi away from many traps and even fool several others, chaining mushroom and enemy jumps and moving precisely to beat the game in the fastest time possible.

RosenkreuzStilette is an action platforming doujin game that was developed by independent Japanese studio [erka:es]. The gameplay takes heavy inspiration from the classic NES Mega Man games, and the art style is evocative of the IGA-era Castlevania games and early Type Moon games such as Tsukihime and Fate/stay night. It also has a generally rich plot with a good amount of worldbuilding for a doujin game.
Taking place in a medieval fantasy setting, the game revolves around the Magi, magic users who were persecuted for practicing magic. The Magi fought the Holy Empire for their freedom and rights and eventually won, finding their place as a branch of the empire's military called Rosenkreuzstilette, or RKS for short. Tensions remained, however, which led to one of their commanders, Count Michael, ordering a brutal strike against Holy Empire out of fear for his fellow Magi. Spiritia, who was away at the time, returns to find the rebellion in action and the Count's daughter Iris suddenly being whisked away by the dragon Talos, supposedly on the orders of the Count himself. Spiritia, with the help of her friends, must now rescue Iris and quell the rebellion before things get even worse.
Hetfield90 improves on their previous "Spiritia" run by about 83 seconds thanks to heavy usage of a new zipping technique and better RNG manipulation. For more details, you can read the author's notes.
For more action, there is also a run that uses Grolla by the same author.

The graphical style of the game is heavily influenced by the Commodore 64.
In the spirit of the retro games' secret hunt, 20 aptly named Shiny Trinkets are hidden throughout the game. The author makes sure to collect all of them in his movie.
Additionally, this TAS is completed on the game's no-death mode, which removes all the cutscenes and dialogues, as well as allows collecting a specific Trinket without having to die. Dying once on this mode prompts an instant game over, making it an especially brutal challenge in unassisted conditions.
