This is a historic movie, submitted and obsoleted before the creation of the database-based (and wiki-based) site engine, before July 2004.
It was inserted to the database in a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.
This movie (Fried's 2nd attempt) beats Bisqwit's movie by almost 3 seconds. Improvement come from overall better precision. The most significant one seems to come at the end of 5-1 where a koopa is used to launch mario up to the top of the wall.

As for the movie itself... This is Michael Fried's improvement over Lezard. The main improvement comes from taking damage in level 4 to save time.

Even though at first sight this might seem like a kiddie game, when you start playing it you'll see that it's no cakewalk, and is actually very challenging.
There's a lot of fighting in this game, so this movie is nonstop action, and it has very accurate shooting.

The classic game that we grew up with completed much faster than most people think is possible.
The length is 5:03.73 (18224 frames), from power on to touching the axe.
It is 130 frames (2.17 seconds) faster than the previous version, which was already thought to be perfect.
Even in simple-looking games you can always find more time-saving tricks to exploit if you look hard enough. See what we've found at the Super Mario Bros. Tricks page.
This movie also gets as many coins and kills as many enemies as possible without losing speed.
Three glitches were used to save time.
In addition to the wall jump and alternate pipe glitches in 8-4 that were also done in the previous version, the vine in 4-2 was used to do a teleportation glitch, followed by an alternate pipe glitch used to get to the warp zone faster.
8-4 was completed with 315 timeunits left (1 timeunit faster than the previous version).
The delay involving fancy jumping at the end of 8-3 was to avoid the fireworks that come when the timer ends with a 3.

This movie is 2 seconds faster than its predecessor. Most importantly it shows a major increase in production quality evolving in SMB TASing. This movie polishes the little optimizations and makes the most of the tricks that were known at the time. It also does a good job with entertainment. It tries to kill enemies and get coins as much as possible along the way, plays with death, and doesn't jump higher than necessary to reach ledges.

This is the 2nd version by Michael Fried. It is a good TAS for its time that takes advantage of a wall jump and "wrong pipe" glitch in level 8-4.

This is total six timeunits faster than Bisqwit's previous video.
This video features really precise timing to cut the times on some levels and two tricks in level 8-4 that most people don't know and some who know still can't do.
Uses warps. Incidentally, this marks the first SMB movie from an "outside" source (meaning not done by Bisqwit).

This is 5 seconds shorter (thus faster) than the famous Morimoto's version, but not so hardly worked. No 99 extra lifes and skillful play with enemies here, just plain accurate action...

Comments from the author (three separate messages, two before the completion of the video):
I started working on my new Zelda speed run video (video length is 2:52 so far and attached in case you want to see what I did so far). Make sure you pay attention to the extreme coolness of how fast I enter my name :) I'm going to start out the same way Josh L. did (get sword, get overworld heart container, beat level 2), but I'm also going to make some major strategy changes, for example, level 8 is going to be the third level I go to. I'm also not going to get the magic shield. I'm also going to kill enemies faster than he did. By the way, if you're wondering why I didn't get any keys in level 2, it's because I don't need them. I'm going to have a net gain of 1 key in level 1, then I'll go to level 8 where I'll get 1 more key, and then there are 2 locked doors to go through before getting the magic key.
My Zelda video is turning out pretty good so far. I finished the third level today (level 8 in my speed run). After you see how fast I kill the darknuts (enemies that look like knights) in level 8, it will become obvious that the comment that battles could have been optimized better won't be necessary anymore once my video is on your page :) I also killed the level 8 boss very fast. Also, now that I have the magic key, the other levels should go more quickly. I attached the fmv of what I did so far. Even if you don't have time to watch the whole thing, I recommend you at least see me kill the darknuts.
I crushed Josh's video by a few minutes (4:32 to be exact) just as I said I would in a previous email. I attached the fmv. When you put it on your page, make sure you mention that Up+A was not used. I'm not sure, but I think Up+A is allowed according to Twin Galaxies rules, so people might assume that I did use Up+A, which would make it less impressive.»»
