Doom II: Hell on Earth is the hit sequel to Doom, one of the most influential first person shooters of all time. The Doomguy has returned from his mission on Mars and his banishment to Hell, only to find that Earth has been invaded by demons. He must now kill all the demons on Earth and go back to Hell so he can kill everything there.
almostmatt1 and Zero Master utilize a variety of glitches and tricks that exploit the Doom engine's quirks to complete the game on the "Ultra-Violence" difficulty as fast as possible. The RNG was also manipulated to ensure the enemy AI acts as the runners intended. You can read the authors' notes for more details on how each level was achieved and a list of all the glitches used.

Formerly known as Halloween Harry, Alien Carnage follows our hero Harry as he single-handedly fights off an invasion of aliens intent on zombifying the populace while rescuing a large number of hostages they have taken. It is fast-paced at the general expense of control quality.
The original creators, John Passfield and Apogee Software, generously released the game as freeware in 2007 and it can be downloaded from here.
This run by Ilari plays through all four "missions" (episodes) back-to-back, as playing through the first three missions is required to unlock the fourth.

Avoid the Noid is a platform computer game for the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS, written in 1989 to promote Domino's Pizza. It was modeled after the company's ad campaign during the late 1980s. The ads featured a "noid" that destroyed pizzas and must be avoided.
The protagonist must traverse a 30-story building and deliver the pizza within 30 minutes. Colorful rabbits armed with booby traps, phone bombs, rocket launchers and bomber planes that drop water balloons seek to prevent the delivery.
Partners in crime turska & Ilari deliver the pizza in a record-breaking 03:33.52, or 7:42.00 according to the ingame clock. For details on how they did it, read the authors' commentary.

Boppin' is a puzzle game developed by Accursed Toys and published by Apogee from 1994. The heroes, Yeet and Boik, notice one day that their arcade games have no monsters, and find out that Hunnybunz has taken them all away in his attempt to create a pure, anodyne world free of anything that could be perceived as controversial. Yeet and Boik set off to free these monsters at the behest of other video game heroes, because what else would they do if there was nothing to fight against?
This game was somewhat controversial in its time. The original version had disturbing animations when the players got a game over, but later versions had to have them activated by a command line parameter. Boppin' is also known for its bizarre imagery and its numerous religious and political references.

Castle Adventure is a game made in 1984 about a cloverleaf person trapped in a deserted castle with monsters roaming around. You have to find a way to escape the castle by searching for clues.
You move around with the arrow keys. If you manage to find a weapon, you can attack enemies by simply moving into them. Similarly, you can pick up objects on the ground by moving into them. You can also type in commands such as "LOOK DESK", "TAKE KEY", "READ BOOK", and "DROP FLASK". There are treasures to be found and monsters to be slain in order to increase your score.
In this TAS, Ilari & Truncated clear the game in a blindingly fast 19.45 seconds utilizing subframe optimization and rapid keyboard-twisting input. For details, read the authors' comments.
The run is so fast that the emulator can't draw all of the game's video output, so the downloadable encodes are made with a hacked version of the emulator that draws all of them. There is also a secondary YouTube encode that slows the gameplay footage down to 14% speed.

CD-Man is a Pac-Man clone first released in 1989, then updated to Version 2.0 in 1992. The game speed options range from the really slow "Zzzzz..." to the mind-numbingly fast "Warp". Five levels are present in Version 2.0 of the game, unlike the original version, which ended at level 3.
Author c-square controls two characters simultaneously at the highest speed setting and clears the 5 levels twice in 3.71 seconds, making it one of the fastest published TASes on this site.
Due to the sheer speed of the game, slowed down encodes are available. One is at 16.7% of the regular speed, while another is at 10% of the regular speed.

Commander Keen 1: Marooned on Mars started the iconic game series. In this episode, aliens from the planet Vorticon VI find out about the eight year-old genius and plan his destruction. While Keen is out exploring the mountains of Mars, the Vorticons steal vital parts of his ship and take them to distant Martian cities! Keen must wrest the parts back from their wicked, clawed hands.
In this run, the author takes back what is Keen's without firing shots at any organic lifeform. Reading the author's comments is recommended.

Published on 5/3/2012
Commander Keen 2: The Earth Explodes (1990) is the second game in the Commander Keen saga. In it, the Vorticon mothership intends to destroy Earth, and only eight-year old Billy Blaze, as Commander Keen, can save us.
Here the author beats back the Vorticon invasion in slightly under 5 minutes, leaving one to wonder why we here on Earth bother with military defense at all. It's not quite that easy though; reading the author's comments is recommended to understand the planning and manipulation required for Keen to waltz by Vorticon after Vorticon.

From the submission comments: It's Commander Keen 3! Released in 1990, this is the final game in the Vorticon trilogy, using the same engine as Keens 1 and 2. This time Keen must face the Grand Intellect, an evil leader who enslaved all Vorticons and indoctrinated them with only one thought: "Keen must die!"
While there are 16 levels total, only 3 are required to beat the game. In RTA timing this run finishes in 1:37.68 and beats the cancelled run by 30.39 seconds.
If you enjoy this movie, TASVideos also has runs of all the other Keen games.

Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software, and is the first episode of Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy.
Several months after the freeing the Vorticons from Mortimer McMire, Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) finds out that an unknown race called the Shikadi are planning to destroy the Milky Way. He sets course towards Gnosticus IV on a quest to discover their location with the Oracle's aid. Upon arrival, he discovers that the Shikadi have captured the Council Members. In order to save the universe, Keen must fly to the Shadowlands and rescue them.
Using a series of tricks listed in the submission text, Keen reaches the ending in a mere 10 minutes.
Be sure to also watch the exciting conclusion to Goodbye Galaxy.

Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software. It is a direct continuation of the previous episode of Goodbye Galaxy, in which Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) has learned from the Oracle of Gnosticus IV that the evil Shikadi plan to blow up the galaxy with their doomsday device, the Omegamatic (It slices! It dices! It causes a 100,000 light year-diameter quantum explosion!). Naturally, he sets out to sabotage the machine and stop the Shikadi.
Using a series of glitches, Keen completes only four stages to get to the end game, only one of which takes any significant length of time, and destroys the Quantum Explosion Dynamo, the core of the Omegamatic in the impossibly short time of 2:02. In the process, he manages to inadvertently prevent the Shikadi from accomplishing their escape (though you have to watch the ending very closely to figure out that this has happened here).

Published on 4/3/2012
Commander Keen 6: Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter is the final chapter in the Commander Keen saga. Eight-year old Billy Blaze, as Commander Keen, must save his babysitter from being eaten by Bloogs.
Commander Keen 6 is also the third Keen game to get absolutely destroyed at TASVideos. Watch as Keen goes over, around, or through everything in his way to beat the entire game in a bit over three minutes. Reading the author's comments is recommended, and probably mandatory if you want to know what happened.

Initially published as a commercial game between Invasion of the Vorticons and Goodbye, Galaxy! in 1991, Commander Keen: Keen Dreams was largely overlooked until it saw a shareware release in late 1992 almost a year after Goodbye, Galaxy!. It is informally known as Keen 3.5 among fans.
In Keen Dreams, Commander Keen goes to sleep and finds himself in the land of Tuberia, where he discovers that Earth children are being trapped in their sleep to work as slaves for the evil King Boobus Tuber. Out of ammo and lacking his trusty pogo stick, Keen must resort to scavenging Flower Power and Boobus Bombs from the local flora in order to combat the tuberian threat.
slamo improves his previous TAS by 24.98 seconds (~21.22 seconds on RTA timing), thanks to a new route, ditching two long levels (Melon Mines and Spud City) in favor of 4 shorter levels on the southern part of the overworld.

Jetpack is a platformer game (now freeware), featuring a man equipped with a jetpack which he uses for flying (if it has fuel, otherwise he can jump) and a phase shifter for temporarily getting rid of troublesome bricks. His goal is to collect all the green gems in 100 devilish stages and avoid hordes of enemies.
In this extremely carefully planned run, slamo completes the game in 32 minutes and 22 seconds with large heaps of luck manipulation and glitch abuse. A normal player would barely get through the first 10 levels in that amount of time.
Prepare to be blown away watching large complex levels completed in under 20 seconds on average. Enjoy seeing extremely tight movement with enemies all around without getting hit, or getting hit yet somehow managing to complete the level anyway. Be dazzled as a dozen teleporters are all simultaneously manipulated to keep enemies away from our hero. Be sure not to fall off your seat when you see Jetman passing through spikes unharmed or completing levels with just the right amount of fuel, and narrowly avoiding certain doom from becoming trapped in reappearing walls.
Practically every aspect of the game was carefully analyzed and thoroughly documented by our users, slamo, Svimmer, Ilari, Nach, creaothceann, and hegyak for the creation of this run. This includes full level maps, with secrets in plain view.

Since the action is so fast paced, there's an alternate YouTube encode at 43% speed, and alternate download encodes at 50% and 75% speeds. It is recommended to watch this run at a slower speed to fully appreciate the timing and many of the tricks performed.

DrD2k9 improves his previous TAS by 1.56 seconds, mostly thanks to a new route. Please read the author's comments for more details.

Due to the sheer speed of the movie, the second set of downloadables play back the movie at 1/5th of the regular speed.

If you've been in Europe long enough, you've probably heard of the Lada car company. However, you probably haven't heard of this relatively obscure tie-in game, involving racing - yes, you guessed it - a Lada... which happens to have a rocket launcher and machine gun (those are almost certainly not standard features).

Mario & Luigi for MS-DOS is an independent game created by aspiring coder Mike Wiering in 1994. Although it's limited in some ways, the game is reasonably solid and shows decent smooth-scrolling graphics for a 25MHz 486.

In this run, c-square aims for the maximum scores that can be reached with all the minigames, using scripts and subframe input to type out as quickly as six letters in a single frame during two minigames.

This is a Mega Man game that was not developed by Capcom, but rather by Stephen Rozner of Hi-Tech Expressions, who did all the design, programming, graphics, and sound. The game is infamous for its mediocre quality.
In this run, David Fifield shaves 36.61 seconds off the previous movie. The majority of the savings come from a glitch that allows most of Volt Man's stage to be skipped. Other improvements include better movement throughout the stages and faster boss fights.

This game runs too fast on anything more modern than a low-end 386 or so. As such, the encode is technically correct.

Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire is the sequel to Hero's Quest. It takes place in the town of Shapeir and the desert surrounding it, in a Middle East-like environment. It seems that the powerful elemental spirits have been troubling the Shapeir folk recently. Something, or someone, is behind those troubles. It is the hero's task to find out what is going on, get acquainted with the town's inhabitants and prove once more that he is worthy of his heroic title.

Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is a simulation game developed by MPS Labs and published by Microprose in 1990. The goal of this game is to normally rack up as much money as possible by expanding the railroad empire across the land, building stations, buying trains, creating industries and fending off the competition, with a starting capital of £1 million, in order to retire with the highest job rank.
In this TAS, however, c-square loses as much money as possible on the highest speed setting, Turbo, and still manages to earn the highest rank thanks to an underflow, where the value wraps around to be +£32 million after losing money past £32'767'000, in just less than 40 seconds. One could say he crashed the economy by doing so.

The Adventures of Captain Comic: Episode 1 - Planet of Death was one of the first console-style side-scrolling platform (shareware) games for PCs. Though it was developed as an experiment to test the viability of real arcade games on standard IBM-compatible PCs, Captain Comic gained fame as one of the best shareware games ever made, later serving as the inspiration for Commander Keen and even getting an unlicensed port to the NES.
To complete the game, players must collect three treasures that were stolen from the planet Omsoc: rare gems, a sack of rare coins, and a jeweled crown. David Fifield and Kabuto collect the three treasures as quickly as may be technically possible, thanks to accomplishing the routing of the run using computer optimization. To learn more about the algorithms and optimization work that went into this run, read the authors' submission notes.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is written by Douglas Adams and Steven Meretzky and based on Adams’ BBC radio series, television series, and the series of subsequent novelizations. It’s one of the classic Interactive Fiction games produced by Infocom, labeled as Science Fiction and has a Standard Level of Difficulty. Though divergent from the source material, the main characters, locations, and concepts are here. Unlike the book, death can come quickly if Arthur fails to observe his surroundings, collect inventory, talk to people, and consult the Guide. DON’T PANIC!
