Dragon Unit (also known as Castle of Dragon) is a side-scrolling action-adventure game in which Geraden must hack and slash his way through the kingdom and destroy legions on Darklarza's forces. Initially equipped with a sword and a shield, plus the armor on his back, Geraden can upgrade to more powerful offensive and defensive options, as well as obtain various powerful magic spells.
While the speed boost trick can't be done when playing with two players, mamuuuut still keeps things interesting with a variety of two-player antics.

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is the 4th Capcom fighting game to incorporate characters licensed from the Marvel Comics universe. It is in many ways a direct sequel to X-Men vs. Street Fighter, featuring many of the same characters and the same tag-team gameplay. It was well-received and paved the way for the Marvel vs. Capcom series.
In this playaround, the author shows many different characters, sometimes controlling both 1P and 2P, sometimes against the CPU. Infinite combos, glitches, and strange situations appear non-stop. A number of the glitches and techniques are detailed in the author's comments.

Osman is a arcade game in the spirit of Strider. It's a very obscure and underrated arcade game, which didn't see much of the light of day, thanks to various issues with the hardware... and the fact that the game is unforgivably hard.
This run by xy2 beats the game with the highest score possible, without relying on checkpoint farming to increase the score further.

Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa's Revenge (Samurai Spirits: Amakusa's Descent (サムライスピリッツ天草降臨) in Japan) is the fourth installment of SNK's Samurai Shodown series of fighting games. Story-wise, it's the second and final chapter of a story between Samurai Shodown and Samurai Shodown II, with III being the first chapter.
In this playaround-style run, Dark Noob shows off more glitches, combos, and character variety than the preceding run in this category. This makes the movie nearly twice as long, but there should be plenty to enjoy. For some details, see the submission comments.

You control a shinobi, Joe Musashi, who must battle his way through each level in search of hostages which must be rescued. You have shurikens, kicks and punches to defend yourself with, as well as powerful ninja magic which can clear the screen of enemies in one go.
Each level is broken down into smaller scenes, and hostages are guarded by big blokes who throw swords. Watch out for gun-toting enemy henchmen and ninjas. Reaching the end of each level will find you battling it out with a boss. These range from 8ft tall giants to helicopter gunships.
In this run, V kills all the enemies that appear throughout the game, but doesn't try to respawn any of them to increase the kill count, because that would result in endlessly killing the same enemy.

Street Fighter Zero 3 (ストリートファイターZERO3), more known like Alpha 3, was released in 1998.
SFZ/A3 is an evolution of the previous Zero series, and there was a huge improvement in the fight style, combos, animations/mode and with addition of fighters that were missing in Street Fighter Alpha or Zero.

This is a playaround of what is considered the most popular hack of Street Fighter II - Championship Edition. The hack was found in bootlegged arcade cabinets throughout the world, surpassing the original in availability in some places.
This hack features several modifications, such as the ability to change characters mid-match, teleportation, midair special moves, and new projectile attacks. Capcom later incorporated some of these new moves into Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
In this run, the author shows off all the fighters and makes good use of some of the craziness added to the game. He also shows off quite a few glitches that are quite amusing to see.

It is the fifth installment in the Street Fighter II sub-series of Street Fighter games, following Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers. Like its predecessor, it ran on the CP System II hardware.

The King of Fighters '97 is the fourth game in the King of Fighters series. This King of Fighters introduces two special modes - Advanced Mode (based on KOF '96) and Extra Mode (based on KOF '94 & '95). It concludes the three part 'Orochi Saga' story-line that began in King of Fighters '95 (and continued in KOF '96) (see the Wikipedia article for more details).

Kama Sutra is a 32-level Doom 2 megawad released in March of 2005, created by Adolf "Gusta" Vojta and Jakub "method man" Razak, a pair of Czech speedrunners. They are together known as the "KSteam" after this project.
This run uses Skill 4, Ultra-Violence. This is the most common skill level used in the Doom speedrunning and TAS community.

Like its predecessor, after finishing the game, you can choose to ignore pretty-boy Soma Cruz and instead play as Julius Belmont. Unfortunately, it seems that Julius's skills have waned a bit since his last appearance. Yoko Belnades and Alucard easily pick up the slack, though.
This run avoids the use of large-skip glitches that can be seen in our other run of Julius in Dawn of Sorrow, showing off more of the game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on the Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. In it, Soma Cruz continues to cultivate his unhealthy obsession with collecting the souls of his enemies.
Using the powers that only tool assistance can provide, every single possible soul is collected in a bit over 35 minutes. If you've ever played the game, you know what a pain those souls can be.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, the third game in the series for the DS, takes a different direction from its direct predecessors in that it is more of a stage-based game, similar to the earliest entries in the series, rather than the "Metroidvania"-style first established by Symphony of the Night.
This run plays as Albus, only available as a character after the player has cleared the game as Shanoa. Watch in awe as he beats down this difficult game with reality warping abilities and flaming kicks.

Like many Castlevania games, Portrait of Ruin has extra alternate play modes available after completing the primary quest. In this case, you get to play as Richter Belmont and Maria Renard, using a dual character system very similar to the main quest.

The second Castlevania title released on Nintendo DS after Dawn of Sorrow, this game is a direct sequel to Bloodlines on Sega Genesis. Dracula rises from the dead yet again (cue groan), and it's up to Jonathan Morris, helped out by Charlotte Aulin, a powerful mage student, to defeat him.
Beating Dracula into a pile of dust in under five minutes wasn't enough for our heroes, so this time they wreck his entire castle and surrounding areas before killing him. Every boss is slain, so you get to see more of that fast "showtime" action. Significant glitching is used; read the author's comments for more information.

New Super Mario Bros. was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. It features your typical side-scrolling plumber, but in this case he comes with enhanced abilities, like wall jumping and doing flips.
Most of the game can normally be skipped with warp cannons. Here, the author avoids those cannons, allowing you to see much more plumbing action.
Soig improves the previous movie by 5.35 seconds, thanks to better optimisation.

Newer Super Mario Bros. DS is a hack of New Super Mario Bros. that adds entirely new levels and custom enemies, bosses, music and graphics to the DS game. The hack also modifies the Blue Shell of the original game into the Hammer Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3.
In this TAS by Soig, the Hammer Suit is heavily abused to beat the hack in record time.

Super Mario 64 DS is a remake of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo DS, released in 2004 along with the system. It features improved graphics, new levels and playable characters, and most importantly in this case, a different "polish".

Publisher's Note: Completing the game as Yoshi presents an issue as the player will die in the Rainbow Ride part of the credits and return to the Castle Grounds making the credits incomplete.

This is a TAS of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, a.k.a. 'The Lost Levels', using Mario's brother Luigi. He jumps higher than Mario, but acts slower in many ways. However, the movie is in no way worse than the Mario version - some new creative solutions have been found.
This is an 110 frame improvement over the previous movie by Phil.

Contra: The Alien Wars is the third entry in the Contra series. Like its predecessors, it is a predominantly side-scrolling shooter with a heavy emphasis on action. The protagonist can fire in eight directions when standing still. New abilities include climbing on walls, grabbing poles and navigating tanks. Parts of scenery can be destroyed. Originally released on the SNES, this version of the game was released on the Game Boy in 1994.
ThunderAxe31 makes quick work of this game, while refusing to kill any enemies. Well, he accidentally stomped on a couple of them, watched one fall into the abyss, wasn't careful enough and enabled some landmines... Some enemies even exploded by themselves. But it was never his intention, okay? It's a pacifist completion.

This is Metroid II: Return of Samus completed with all the items collected. Being truthful to the original Metroid values, the game holds many items cleverly hidden, so finding all of them is not an easy task.
That being said, Metroid II doesn't keep track of the collected items' percentage. Moreover, the game has two excessive Energy tanks and an additional copy of each beam. It's been agreed that the author should take all the E-tanks, and at least one copy of each beam. However, due to the apparent linearity of this game, collecting so many additional items doesn't make the movie dramatically slower.
This movie is nearly 6 minutes faster than Alter's previous movie due to better precision, faster Metroid fights, and missile planning.
Note: This movie does not use secret worlds, also known as "select glitch".

Mortal Kombat II was the first game of the Mortal Kombat series to feature a playable character-changing fighter (the sorcerer Shang Tsung). This run is played on the Game Boy port. Watch as AKheon humiliates the computer opponents, demonstrates some major glitches, and beats the game in just over 9 minutes.

Pokémon: Blue and Red Version are part of the first generation of the Pokémon franchise. They were developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo in North America in 1998. They feature a 10-year old boy who ventures around the Kanto region and aim to become the Pokémon champion. During his journey, he encounters various monsters, which he can catch to use for battles, or just to fill up his Pokédex.
In this run, MrWint fills the Pokédex without resorting to any glitches and obtains the diploma in both games in less than four hours. Note that Mew isn't caught here; this is because it can only be obtained through either an event or glitches.

The official encodes feature commentary by the author as soft subtitles. In addition, the downloadable encodes feature additional audio tracks: The first (default) track features audio from both games, while the second and third tracks feature audio from Blue and Red, respectively.
There's also an alternate encode provided by the author which features a detailed overlay.

Tatanga is back after being beaten in the regular-mode run of this game, and he kidnapped Princess Daisy again. Daisy is not a pilot, so she is unable to escape from her prison in the sky, despite there being a freely accessible aircraft in the vicinity.
Mario must travel through the four Kingdoms of Birabuto, Muda, Easton, and Chai once again to rescue Daisy. Although this time around, they're packed with much more enemies than before.
This run has much more action than the regular mode of Super Mario Land, due to the increased amount of enemies, yet it is only slightly slower. If you liked TASs of Super Mario Land before now, wait until you see this.

Note: This movie begins from a save state from the end of regular mode in order to access hard mode. There is no other way to access it outside of a hack. We normally do not accept movies which begin from a save state.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is a classic Game Boy Zelda adventure. Link must travel across the dream world of Koholint Island, collecting the 8 Instruments to wake the Wind Fish and go home after a terrible shipwreck.
bobmario511 (the author), however, decided collecting instruments for a one-man band was a waste of time, so he skipped all of that and went straight to the Wind Fish (with a pesky boss battle in the middle).

Normally a solar eclipse isn't a dangerous event, but for Soma Cruz being sucked through a portal and into Dracula's castle during one will turn his day into a total nightmare. As Soma you must venture through the castle and find a way out. As you do so, you will discover the true meaning behind the event, and why Dracula has risen yet again.
Those who greatly dislike that Aria of Sorrow's main character isn't related to the Belmont clan whatsoever can safely relax, because the powerhouse known as Julius Belmont enters the stage to destroy every boss faster then Soma ever could.
Julius is only available to those who have completed the main quest. While he can't do most of Soma Cruz's fancy tricks, he can get around just as quickly by glitching through walls and hopping madly around the castle, producing almost inhuman sounds with every jump.
This movie obsoletes the previous one in this category, despite having a longer time, because it uses hard mode, is more optimized and also manages to get into a Julius vs. Julius fight.

Those who greatly dislike that Aria of Sorrow's main character isn't related to the Belmont clan whatsoever can safely relax, because the powerhouse known as Julius Belmont enters the stage in the relatively short run of this Castlevania installment.
Julius is only available to those who have completed the main quest. While he can't do most of Soma Cruz's fancy tricks, he can get around just as quickly by glitching through walls and hopping madly around the castle, producing almost inhuman sounds with every jump.

This is a really, really fast TAS through Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance played with Maxim, who is only available after the game is beaten once. Most of the game is glitched through by being stuck in different walls, so it's hard to explain what happened in this run; see it for yourself.

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance is the second Castlevania game to appear on the Game Boy Advance. Juste Belmont and his friend Maxim are drawn to the newly resurrected Dracula's Castle in order to save their mutual friend Lydie, although it remains to be seen who will be saving whom.
This run plays through the Boss Rush mode using Simon Belmont, the original hero of Castlevania. Simon is pretty slow, but he still powers through the bosses with massive amounts of cross abuse.

This is a really fast TAS through Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance played as Maxim, who is only available after the game is beaten. Unlike in the glitch-warped run, the protagonist doesn't directly fight Dracula and instead defeats every boss, reaching Dracula the intended way. However, this doesn't stop Maxim from making short work of every boss and sinking into walls wherever he wants.
This TAS by gstick improves the prior run by 01:43.07 thanks to further optimizations and an entirely new route.

DK: King of Swing is a Donkey Kong spinoff game developed by Paon and published by Nintendo in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance. The Kongs are planning a competition to see who's the best in the jungle! Just before it begins, K. Rool steals all the medals for the tournament! DK must hunt down K. Rool and get back those stolen medals for the tournament!
g0goTBC beats the game with Diddy Kong who features some gameplay differences, making the game harder than with Donkey Kong and showing different strategies. This movie is a 00:39.88 second improvement over the previous record by PiePusher11.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is the second Kingdom Hearts game released, detailing Sora's encounters in the mysterious Castle Oblivion.
This run is done on Reverse/Rebirth, which is Riku's campaign. The author, Doc Skellington, heavily abuses luck for nearly everything, beating the game in about the time it would normally take one to finish the first level. More information can be found in the author's comments.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a role-playing video game developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance in 2003.
The game follows Mario and Luigi and Bowser as they travel through Beanbean Kingdom in order to restore Princess Peach's voice from the clutches of Cackletta.
In this movie, Potato defeats all of the major bosses in the game in record time.

Viewers who have photosensitivity problems may want to avoid watching as there's a high amount of flashing visuals from 45:22 onwards due to the glitches that are performed and it can become uncomfortable to watch. Metroid: Zero Mission is a retelling of Metroid with new plot twists and updated gameplay.
This run aims to complete the game as quickly as possible while collecting as few items as possible. This changes the gameplay, requiring more careful ammo management and new solutions to complete certain areas without powerups. Reading the author's comments is recommended.

Mortal Kombat Advance is a port of the classic Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, for a handheld console. A terrible one at that. This one features a different engine, full of glitches, lousy controls and an even cheaper AI.
AKheon makes the in-game fighters look like idiots by glitching the game in a lot of possible ways!

Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition is a standalone game which acts as a sort of expansion to the GBA version of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. It has different characters, better AI and some bug fixes compared to the original GBA game.
Here, AKheon plays the Tag Team mode, where he chooses a team of two fighters to fight against other teams. The characters can be swapped at any time during a match.
If you're looking for a run that abuses a lot of crazy glitches in a handheld fighting game, then look no further, you have it right here!

Pokémon: LeafGreen Version is an enhanced version of the original Pokémon: Green Version. Many glitches have been removed, and the random mechanics behind wild encounters have changed. This leads to very different strategies compared to our fastest runs on the original generation of games, and as a result, runs of this game see much more of the plot.
This run defeats the Elite Four and Champion twice; after the first time through is a post-game side quest in a new area known as the Sevii Islands, introduced in these remakes. Completing this quest unlocks the "National Pokédex" and enables trading with the Hoenn-region Generation 3 games (Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald) and also gives the Elite Four and Champion new, higher-level Pokémon teams for the player to fight.

In this run of Sonic Advance, the author doesn't take advantage of the game-destroying spindash glitch featured in the normal run. It goes somewhat slower because of this, but new inventive solutions are used to get through each act, and the result is still much faster than any oversized ferret ought to be moving.
There are two encodes for this movie: The first is a standard encode, whereas the second encode shows two screens: the screen on the left is the unmodified gameplay, and the screen on the right is from a hack which keeps Sonic in the center of the screen more often. (Note that this hack has no effect on the actual gameplay, only on the watcher's viewing experience.)

Sonic Advance was Sonic the Hedgehog's first appearance on a portable Nintendo console, and he brought all his friends with him.
In this run, Tails shows what he's capable of and sets off to defeat Dr. Eggman once again. He aims to do so as fast as possible without using the game-destroying glitch featured in this run as Sonic.

Sonic Advance was Sonic the Hedgehog's first appearance on a portable Nintendo console, and he brought all his friends with him.
This run proves that Knuckles the Echidna is up to the task of zipping through levels at warp speed and defeating Dr. Eggman yet again. Don't blink! In this movie, the author doesn't take advantage of the game-destroying spindash glitch featured in this run as Sonic.
While it may seem that it's only 0.73 seconds faster than the previous movie due to more accurate emulation, it is in fact faster by 33.13 seconds in in-game time. Please read the author's comments for more details.

Super Mario Advance is a remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Mario Bros. together on one cartridge. It features all the running, jumping, and veggie-flinging from the original Super Mario Bros. 2, plus new enemies and bigger items (and some annoying voice clips). In the updated arcade classic Mario Bros., you can play alone or against another player as you bump off baddies and collect coins.
There's another very important difference between this version of Super Mario Bros. 2 and the NES version: when loading a savefile in this game, the player can travel back to any stage before the last one visited. This makes several new routes available through the game which involve warping forward and then going back to a previous stage with a different warp.
This run by mtvf1 plays through the Super Mario Bros. 2 mode with Princess Peach. Of course, at the speed mtvf1 runs and jumps across Subcon, you'd never guess she's the slowest character. Tekken Advance appears to be a good handheld port of the original arcade and PSX series, maintaining the Tekken spirit and physics despite the omission of some moves and characters.
AKheon plays around with another fighting game and, as always, succeeds in creating something impressive. This movie plays the game's unique Tag Battle mode, which allows the player to use 3 characters for each fight and switch between them at any time.

It would be pointless to describe The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past here, because this run has little to do with the game itself. Using glitches exclusive to the GBA version, Link rips a hole in the space-time-continuum, enters the Palace of the Four Swords, and finishes the game in just over 5 minutes.
This run improves the previous publication by 00:21.17 seconds, primarily through a new trick that ends input early, using buggy boomerangs to finish off the Dark Links.

Mega Man Xtreme is a port of the popular Mega Man X series to the Game Boy Color. It adapts the Mavericks and their stages from that series and wraps it into gameplay more suited for the portable console.
Here, FractalFusion & Alyosha speed through the game and exploit glitches to create a movie worthy of what we have come to expect from Mega Man at TASVideos.
This movie is about 7 seconds faster than the previous record by FractalFusion. It appears longer due to significantly more accurate emulation of the loading times in this run.

Mega Man Xtreme 2, like its predecessor game Mega Man Xtreme, pretty much copies content and bosses from the main line of Mega Man X games. However, Xtreme 2 gets ideas and designs from a much wider range of games, ranging all the way from Mega Man X to Mega Man X5. For instance, there is a Parts system allowing upgrades to your characters. However, there is also an original story (though it's still as silly as many Mega Man storylines), along with some new stage designs and bosses.
Noxxa and Alyosha improve the previous run by about 2 seconds if emulation differences are not accounted for, thanks to using Zero throughout the entire game instead of splitting between X and Zero.

This run starts from a save file in order to unlock "Extreme Mode", which allows visiting all of the game's stages and battles in one run. Runs that start from SRAM are not normally allowed; see the Movie Rules for more on this.
Viewers who have photosensitivity problems may want to avoid watching as there's a high amount of flashing visuals during boss fights that can become uncomfortable to watch.

Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, originally released in Japan as Pokemon de Panepon (ポケモンでパネポン), is a video game for the Game Boy Color. It is based on Panel de Pon (known as Tetris Attack in the West), only with characters from the Pokémon franchise.
zvsp plays through the hardest difficulty, whilst showing the different Pokémon, in Challenge Mode/VS COM Mode in a brisk 5 minutes and 11.62 seconds.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (1999) is the Game Boy Color version of the original Super Mario Bros. In addition to the standard game, it features some new unlockable modes, such as a challenge mode and "You vs. Boo", where Mario must race Boo through several levels which have been modified to make them more interesting in a race.
In this movie, got4n and TehSeven complete the You vs. Boo mode, beating Boo in all eight levels, and over half a second faster than the previous run.
Note: Although this run appears to be longer than the previous movie, that run's time was calculated with an incorrect frame rate. This run is indeed faster.

Luigi wins a mansion in a contest and his brother, Mario, goes missing there. It is your goal to search the haunted mansion to figure out where he is. Your weapons to protect you are a flashlight and the Poltergust 3000, a ghost vacuum. Capturing ghosts and collecting keys helps you progress in your quest to find Mario.
The author, solarplex, utilizes out-of-bounds glitches to skip 19 of the 23 Portrait Ghosts and all of the Boos (except King Boo), beating the whole game in around 10 minutes with TAS timing, or 8:28:52 with RTA timing.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Ubisoft Montreal. It was released in December, 2005 in North America for the Xbox, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, and the Nintendo GameCube. The Two Thrones marked the third and final chapter for The Sands of Time saga, until the release of prequel The Forgotten Sands.
The game combines exploration and combat. Both elements make use of the Prince's acrobatic capability and agility. Throughout much of the game, the player must attempt to traverse the palace by running across walls, ascending or descending chasms by jumping back and forth between walls, avoiding traps, climbing structures and jumping from platform to platform, making other types of well-timed leaps, solving puzzles and using discovered objects to progress.

Spider-Man is based on the 2002 movie of the same name, featuring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker.
Completing this game on the "Hero" difficulty or higher unlocks a New Game+ mode that lets the player take control of Harry Osborn in the Green Goblin suit, complete with the Glider and Goblin Bombs! This New Game+ mode features a new storyline where Harry must stop a "mysterious" adversary, who just happens to sound a lot like Willem Dafoe, in another Green Goblin suit.
Natetheman223 flies around the skies of New York City (and inside some buildings too) at top speed, completing the New Game+ mode in record time.

Tony Hawk's Underground is a skateboarding-adventure video game published by Activision in 2003, the fifth entry in the Tony Hawk series.
Underground is built upon the skateboarding formula of previous Tony Hawk's games: the player explores levels and completes goals while performing tricks. The game features a new focus on customization; the player, instead of selecting a professional skater, creates a custom character.
Underground adds the ability for players to dismount their boards and explore on foot. The plot follows the player character and his or her friend Eric Sparrow as the two become well-known professionals and grow apart.
In this run, The Packle improves upon the previous publication by over three and a half minutes thanks to a new glitch involving custom tricks which eliminates most of the RNG this game has to offer.

Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is the sixth installment in Neversoft's Tony Hawk's series and is the sequel to Underground. The gameplay in Underground 2 is similar to that of previous Tony Hawk games: the player skates around in a 3D environment modeled after various cities and attempts to complete various goals. Most goals involve skating on or over various objects or performing combos. Scores are calculated by adding the sum of the point value of each trick strung together in a combo and then multiplying by the number of tricks in the combo.
In this run, The Packle plays through the Classic game mode, which brings back older THPS styled objectives into the current set of levels (including remade levels of older THPS games), using the easiest difficulty.

Castlevania's foray onto the Genesis sees two protagonists duke it out with Dracula and his minions: John Morris and Eric Lecarde. John Morris carries the famed whip, and Eric Lecarde wields a spear.
This run sees Eric Lecarde take his turn against the vast minions of Dracula. While Lecarde moves slightly faster than Morris, lag from his magic spear had to be taken into account more often, and he is weaker against bosses. Desert Demolition captures the theme and style of the popular Warner Brothers Road Runner shorts to create an entertaining game where the stage hazards and layouts change based on your character choice.
This run features Wile E. Coyote, who uses his guile and Acme traps to surprise and attempt to catch Road Runner. It also has a (not so) surprise ending.

Ecco the Dolphin is a game where you control a fast, but hard to maneuver dolphin who travels into hostile environment to save the other dolphins after a freak waterspout storm.
This run improves the previous one through better execution, a new route and new glitches. As in the previous run, damage is avoided, as it almost always slows Ecco down. At the same time, a major new glitch allowing Ecco to go through nearly any wall was not used because the frequency of its use would make the run very repetitive.

NOTE: The sound issues are a result of inaccurate emulation.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins on the NES. On a quest to recapture stolen souls from Lucifer (Loki in this game), the player advances through a series of levels filled with demonic and undead creatures.
Usually, one would have to finish the game twice in order for it to end properly. Instead of doing so, the author of this movie uses a password to start off on the 2nd playthrough. Despite the game displaying "Practice" on the screen, this movie is indeed played on hardest difficulty. See the author's comments for a more thorough explanation.

This game is what you get if you take Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and lock it onto Sonic & Knuckles. As the name suggests, what you get is simply Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with Knuckles the Echidna as the playable character. The levels remain mostly unchanged, save for the addition of a few monitors that can only be reached as Knuckles, whose abilities from Sonic and Knuckles (gliding, climbing walls, and jumping a little lower than Sonic) remain intact.
In this run, you'll see the zones of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (colloquially referred to as West Side Island in the Japanese manual) like you've never seen them before, as Knuckles uses every trick in the book to collect over five thousand rings, with only 11 throughout the game eluding his grasp. (For the time being, anyway...)

Fast bouncing around. This is a run of Sonic the Hedgehog which avoids zipping (gaining a large speed boost from being inside terrain), unlike the other run of this game. Therefore, most levels cannot be skipped, and instead have to be traversed using a more normal route, although the author still finds a couple of alternative methods to take shortcuts (it is hard to define hard rules to ban all glitches). In this run, the game is completed without collecting the Chaos Emeralds.
There are also runs where Knuckles and Tails they take advantage of their own abilities to finish the game in record time.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is a classic fighting game that's been seen before at TASVideos. But, with each port comes a different set of bugs, and we wouldn't want to leave them out.

Iconoclasts is a platforming game released by Swedish developer Joakim "Konjak" Sandberg. A passion project 11 years in the making, the game follows Robin, a naive and helpful mechanic, as she tries to fix a broken world ruled by a sinister religious authority known as the One Concern.
The authors ikuyo and Serena complete the game without using a glitch known as "Airswim", which would allow the player to skip through major parts of the game.

TowerFall Ascension is an updated release of the arrow-based single-screen arena fighting game TowerFall, which was originally released on the failed Ouya console. It builds upon the original game with a new cooperative quest mode for one or two players. Played in a normal or a hardcore difficulty mode, it offers different levels selected from a large map where different types of enemies need to be killed in multiple rounds to progress. The game also features trials, where a player has to shoot down all targets as fast as possible.
keylie completes all 48 trials, including the ones featured in the Dark World expansion, in a record in-game time of 1 minute and 13.842 seconds.
NOTE: There is no audio during the splash screen (the "Matt Makes Games" screen), the rest of the game does have audio. The movie file is also at 1000 FPS (meaning libTAS tells the game that it runs on a virtual 1000 Hz monitor), while the primary encodes are at 60 FPS, as encodes at 1000 FPS cannot be reliably played back. The secondary encodes are played at 24% speed (240 FPS), which preserves all of the frames (except for the YouTube encode).

Undertale is an RPG video game created by American indie developer Toby Fox in 2015.
The player controls a child who has fallen into the Underground: a large, secluded region under the surface of the Earth, separated by a magic barrier. The player meets various monsters during the journey back to the surface. Some monsters might engage the player in a fight. The combat system involves the player navigating through mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent. They can opt to pacify or subdue monsters in order to spare them instead of killing them. These choices affect the game, with the dialogue, characters, and story changing based on outcomes.
There are 3 main endings: Neutral, True Pacifist, and Genocide. This TAS achieves the Genocide ending, which is known for being the most RNG-intensive category in the game due to the heavy emphasis on combat; the player must kill a specific amount of enemies in each area in order to not lock themselves out of this ending.

Donkey Kong 64 is similar to Rareware's other Nintendo 64 platformer series, Banjo-Kazooie, but stars Donkey Kong and his friends from the Donkey Kong Country games. Several new features have been added to the game, like 3D graphics and the ability to change between different characters with different weapons and abilities.
The "no levels early" category restricts the player from utilizing glitches to enter levels or lobbies (level hubs) earlier than intended, but does not restrict the player from using glitches everywhere else. Thus this category allows for a highly-glitched run where most of the game is still played rather than skipped.
theballaam96 breaks nearly every facet of this game in the name of speed. Level geometry is casually ignored, a mockery is made of physics, and even the main menu is abused to achieve invincibility. The author's submission notes are very detailed and outline the many exploits used to blaze through this category in record time.

Paper Mario, first released in Japan in August of 2000, is a role-playing game for the Nintendo 64. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach and stolen the Star Rod, which allows him to grant himself any wish. To counteract the power of the Star Rod, Mario must locate the seven Star Spirits, who can combine their power to stop Bowser's evil plans.
Malleoz aims to collect all the star spirit cards by heavily manipulating luck and impressively abusing programming errors and loading zones, making this run a whirlwind of entertainment and speed. For a detailed explanation of the tricks used in this run, see the author's submission notes.

Super Mario 64: The Green Stars is a Super Mario 64 rom hack made by Kampel, released in August 2013. Also listed under "hacking" in the credits are Kaze, Frauber and VL-Tone.
The hack has a number of differences compared to the original game, such as an increased count of 130 stars, harder level design, and (as the title implies) green stars. The game is intended as a fan-made sequel to Super Mario 64, and is often praised for feeling very similar to the original game.
The trio of authors power through the hack with incredible speed, showcasing the various levels and landscapes, abusing the game's programming errors, and collecting all 130 stars in under 100 minutes.

Super Mario 74 is a Super Mario 64 ROM hack made by Lugmillord in 2011. It introduces new harder levels, custom music and a greater amount of Stars to collect.
The hack often pokes fun at both the player and the original game. Most of the dialogue is silly or sarcastic and some star names are deliberately unclear to give the player no help in finding them.
First-time TASer homerfunky uses the game's various glitches to blast through the hack, finishing with all 151 stars in less than two hours.

Super Smash Bros. began a series of games that mixes characters from several Nintendo-made games into a unique fighting game. It relies not on wearing down the opponent's "life" but increasing damage until he or she can be literally knocked off the stage. Wildly popular, this game has inspired many lazy days of casual multiplayer gaming but also intense competitive tournaments that happen to this day.
In this run, Isotarge & Mittenz team up and tackle the two timed bonus games with all unlockable characters.
Due to regional differences between releases of this game, the authors ran through both the Japanese and North American games. Ultimately, the Japanese version was deemed faster and published, but the North American run is available too. See the submission thread for more details, and for higher resolution encodes.

In the direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link is back to being a lone boy without a fairy. One day, he is attacked by Skull Kid and his two fairies, Tatl and Tael, and they steal his ocarina. After pursuing Skull Kid, he is transformed into a Deku Scrub. Link continues pursuing Skull Kid all the way to the Clock Town (now with the help of Tatl the fairy, a more 'in yo face' version of Navi).
The authors beat the game collecting as few items as possible, showcasing a variety of different tricks unique to this run (which can be found in the submission notes, along with other details).

Although the length of this movie is 20:09.98 when timed with our standard method, applying the timing method used by most Zelda speedrunners (until last hit on Ganon) would result in a final time of 16:57.69. It's important to note this so that there's no confusion about which runs are faster than the others.
In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible. He achieves this by exploiting a large sequence break which involves "tricking" the game into warping Link directly from the Deku Tree (the first dungeon) to Ganon's Castle. Child Link then goes on conquering the whole castle without a single thought about becoming an adult beforehand.
Despite how quickly this game can be beaten these days, this run is almost two minutes faster than its predecessor thanks to new tricks at the Deku Tree and tower collapse sequence as well as many small improvements throughout the run.
This TAS was done using the Japanese version of the game. The reason for this is that the text is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action.
The author's notes explain in great detail many of the things done in this TAS, which may be confusing to those who aren't familiar with Ocarina of Time speedrunning. Reading them is strongly advised.

In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible, while completing all dungeons, and with the added challenge of doing so without opening any doors. He achieves this by exploiting multiple glitches not seen in any other category of the game in order to complete this challenge.
The submission notes go over in great details all the stipulations of the goal, the tricks, and glitches.
This TAS was done using the Japanese v1.0 version of the game. The reasons for this are glitches that are exclusive to v1.0, as well as text that is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 is the third entry in the Tony Hawk series of video games.
In this playaround, emu shows off by performing crazy stunts, executing large combos and achieving a really high score.

Wetrix is a strange Tetris-style game in which you place blocks onto a large playing field and score loads of points by making lakes and surviving another second (every drop of water that leaks off the field counts against you). This run aims to get the highest score possible in the 1 minute challenge.
The final score is 2,613,944 points. There are huge bonus multipliers which stack together to produce the massive score.

Battle City: Zeng Ge Hack is a Battle City hack made by Zeng Ge (also known as zyr2288). It features complete overhaul of the game and lots of challenging, novel mechanics that weren't present in the original.
Soig uses TAS tools to beat this game as fast as possible. Even though he makes it look easy, it still remains clear how hard this game is for a regular human.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up game known for its extreme difficulty spread over 12 difficult levels. The mechanics in the game also change drastically from level to level, making the game one of the hardest and most varied for the NES.
In this game, the second most diabolical evil genius in the universe, The Dark Queen, has kidnapped Princess Angelica and Pimple - a battletoad. Rash and Zitz must save them by traveling through the most insane multilevel set of plans ever designed. This includes falling down huge shafts, racing through obstacle courses at breakneck speeds, riding on snakes through a massive maze of spikes, passing through a killer ventilation system, navigating through a missile defense system, climbing a never ending revolving tower, and much much more. Along the way, the Battletoads must also face off against an evil army of robots, genetically engineered rodents, and The Dark Queen herself.
In this run, feos, Alyosha, and Samsara improved upon the previous publication by 02:39.34 using many new tricks and glitches.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen.
This run has two players and does not use warps.
As always, a bug on level 11 prevents player 2 from moving, so he gets a game over for that level. Player 1 plays level 11 alone and player 2 comes back for level 12. This is a bug in Battletoads itself.
Lobsterzelda improves the previous movie by 00:11.10 seconds.

Boulder Dash is a well known action-puzzle game where you must collect a quota of diamonds and reach the exit.
Normally, standing under any falling object or just getting close to an enemy means instant death, but in this movie the player fearlessly dives through heaps of falling objects and walks past enemies without a scratch.
It's quite pleasureable to watch if you have ever sat screaming at this game for getting stuck or killed repeatedly.
This playthrough uses a password to skip to level 19-1, which begins the hardest set of levels.
In this 71-second improvement to the previous movie, CtrlAltDestroy finds even faster solutions to many of the game's puzzles, and destroys the amoebas in record time by abusing their AI.

Simon is taking another shot at this castle, but feeling horrible for the destruction he caused last time, he is now trying to respect Dracula's property and leave the place untouched (even if his intention is to kill the count).
As a minimalist variation of a pacifist goal, this movie does not contain any destruction in the levels: candles and walls are left intact, items stay untouched, and no enemy is harmed — with the exception of the bosses, who are killed mercilessly with the help of the "critical hit" glitch.
With Simon sneaking by most enemies with no subweapons and only his leather whip, this ends up being quite a stealthy run.
Challenger improves the previous run by 1 minute and 17.77 seconds, thanks to the scroll glitch that's also present in the non-pacifist run linked above.
This movie has a full Atlas Map encode, which shows the standard encode overlaid on a zoomed out map.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (originally known as 悪魔城伝説 or Akumajō Densetsu, meaning "Legend of the Demon Castle") is the story of Trevor Belmont's battle against Dracula from the times before Simon's battle in Castlevania. In this complex and difficult game, there are three playable allies whom Trevor can recruit: Alucard (Dracula's son), Grant DaNasty (a pirate captain), and Sypha Belnades (a mystic warlord).
This game has a technically high-quality soundtrack because it uses a VRC6 sound chip that works in the Japanese Famicom but not in the NES. Thus, the movie was made with the Japanese version of the game instead of the USA version.
This movie takes the path that recruits Grant. It is about 22 seconds faster than the previous version. Improvements come from more optimization, better heart management, and new tricks like manipulating moving platforms and entering walls. There is also a Sypha path movie and an Alucard path movie.

Unlike those other runs, which are played on the Japanese Famicom version of the game, this run uses the USA version. This is because the USA version has a hard-difficulty mode you can access by naming your character "AKAMA" at the start. In this difficulty, you cannot recruit any allies, and there are more enemies that generally do more damage. To make this even harder, Fortranm takes a route that visits the Sunken City as Stage 6, showing off a difficult stage that no other run of this game shows.

The city of St. Canard is plagued by an unseen crime wave. The intelligence agency S.H.U.S.H. suspects that the shady organization F.O.W.L. and their valued operative Steelbeak are its causes. The caped superhero Darkwing has made quite some enemies in the criminal circles thanks to his past heroic deeds, and now the entire city has to pay for that. Naturally, the valiant duck is determined to travel through the dangerous streets of St. Canard, defeat his foes, and foil Steelbeak's plans.
Darkwing Duck is a side-scrolling platform game featuring the titular character from the Disney television series. The gameplay is similar to Duck Tales, also resembling Mega Man games in many ways. Darkwing's default weapon is a gas gun; special adapters that modify its functions can be collected during exploration. By using his cape, Darkwing is able to deflect some of the enemy projectiles. Weapons can be changed via a sub-screen.
For a "pacifist" type of completion, this run avoids killing enemies (they might also have dropped health refills, so health management is mandatory), and to offer maximum variety in addition to the any% version, doesn't use the subweapons (yet to save a single enemy's life, a single arrow is used). It offers some fresh action and manipulation on bosses, but can't be done entirely along with pacifist, so feos has to use a single arrow to save a single enemy's life.

While the NES versions of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3 and Donkey Kong Jr. Math don't share the same amount of stages, they appear to be similar enough to be beaten at the same time with the same controller input.
This movie improves on the previous movie by playing an additional two games as well as improving by 3.99 seconds.

Extra Mario Bros. is a hack of the original Super Mario Bros. It is noteworthy for being a complete "Metroidvania" game built around the original SMB engine, with very few changes to the engine itself. The five areas in the game are all interconnected (via pipes, naturally), and permanent upgrades have been added to give it a more Metroid-ish feel. (Did I mention the music from Super Metroid? Because there's music from Super Metroid.)
However, despite his newfound ability to return to levels he's visited before and acquire upgrades that don't go away when he dies, Mario still cannot scroll to the left.
This movie collects all of the keys and fights the true final boss but only collects two of the upgrades.

Fester's Quest, developed by Sunsoft, is based on the 1960s television series The Addams Family. While out one night enjoying a quiet evening of "moonbathing", Fester witnesses an alien invasion occur against the city. Armed with his blunderbuss, Fester vows to stop this invasion by finding and defeating the 5 alien bosses (hidden in office buildings) before tracking down the UFO.
In ars4326's run, Uncle Fester briskly paces through the game's overworld and sewers, picking up a few sub-weapons from fellow Addams Family members along the way. Doing so allows quick destruction of the alien bosses guarding the clues to the UFO's whereabouts (as well as the final boss).
A time-saving glitch allowing instant wins on all of the game's bosses was forewent also, due to the author's preference not to use it.

Final Fantasy is a well known RPG about saving the world with the usual assortment of characters.
Here, the author defies all common sense and takes a team composed entirely of White Mages, the token "weak healing caster" class. What's worse, three of them meet their untimely demise at the hands of pirates not very far into their journey. Not to worry, because this survivor has a few tricks up her sleeve.

Notable for once being one of the hardest Super Mario Bros. hacks ever made, Hard Relay Mario (2004) is more like a puzzle game with its cryptic and difficult level layouts.
In this run, made over the course of two and a half years, watch as HappyLee abuses the game engine to its fullest, finishing the game in the time it would normally take to get past the first few obstacles.
To see the game as it was meant to be played, you can also watch HappyLee beat the original game in his "warps" and "warpless" runs.
Note: Due to how similar Air 2 is to this game, this game obsoletes it as it is overall more entertaining to watch.

Kaizo Mario Bros. 3 is a ROM hack created by the late Obitus1 designed to challenge the most skilled Super Mario Bros. 3 players, just like the Kaizo Mario World games are designed to challenge the most skilled SMW players (we have a published run of the third iteration right here).
Naturally, Lord Tom forgoes most of the challenges proposed in this hack and showcases some interesting strategies for beating the 22 levels in record time.

Lunar Ball, known as Lunar Pool in the US, is, as the name suggests, a pool game for the NES with the curious ability to adjust the friction of the surface of the pool table. Indeed, it is quite possible to play with no friction, and while this may sound easy, it actually proves to be impossibly difficult due to removing the major obstacle from the balls just continuing to roll forever, causing the game to never end.
With some heavy support from a bot (and massive loss of sanity), the author manages the nigh-impossible feat of making it all the way to the end of all 60 tables even in the face of this overwhelming opposition.
Reading the submission notes is highly advisable to explain some of the oddities such as the occasional pocketing of the cue ball. (In short: The cue ball is deliberately pocketed in order to avoid getting a perfect score on every level because the point counter would take unbearably long to tick all the points, up to a half minute per level.)

Mario Adventure is a hack of Super Mario Bros. 3. These are its most noteworthy characteristics:
  • Mario can keep a power-up in reserve like in Super Mario World, and the change is immediately effective.
  • There is a new power-up, Magic Mario, which allows Mario to stomp on more enemies than otherwise possible, shoot extremely powerful projectiles, and take a few hits before losing the power-up.
  • Graphics are rendered with a custom palette.
  • Almost all levels end with a Boom-Boom battle.
  • There are 7 worlds which Mario can visit in any order, each containing a hidden key.
  • After finding all 7 keys and beating the 7 worlds, Mario can access the 8th world to beat Bowser and win the game.

Mega Man 2 is a game that hardly needs any introduction. This movie plays Rockman 2, the Japanese version, which is essentially Mega Man 2 in difficult mode.

The games Mega Man 3, 4, 5 and 6 are all the same. Eight robot masters are defeated and Mega Man steals their weapons. After some kind of distraction, Mega Man attacks Wily's fortress and it typically gets blown up. If you don't believe that's true, we offer this movie.
While driving home the point in honor of our first multi-game movie, Baxter and AngerFist prove that Capcom really has been making the same game over and over again by playing Mega Man 3, 4, 5 and 6 using the same input.
No attempt is made to synchronize the endings of these games. Mega Man 6 finishes first and Mega Man 4 finishes last.
Encoder's note: There are more encodes (labeled multitrack) available in the Archive collection. Track 1 contains the audio of all four games arranged in such a way that Mega Man 3 and Mega Man 5's audio are on the left audio channel and Mega Man 4 and Mega Man 6's audio are on the right audio channel. Tracks 2 to 5 contain the sole audio of Mega Man 3 to Mega Man 6 respectively.

Mega Man 4 Voyage is an extensive hack of the original NES game, featuring changes to level design, music, graphics, weapons, enemies, and bosses. The basic "run, jump and shoot" Mega Man mechanic remains intact, and the hack's authors write that it "should be suitable for veterans and casual players alike."
In this run, Baddap1 completes the game as quickly as possible by using the new Speed Boost item, most of the weapons, and general strategies such as luck manipulation and time-saving damage.
This movie obsoletes one done on another hack, Rockman 4 Burst Chaser × Air Sliding. We also have a run of Rockman 4 Minus Infinity.

"Metal Storm" is the tale of an ultra-powerful, smoothly animated, and gravity flipping mechadroid that can take one hit before exploding into confetti. Pah.
This run is an improvement of one and a half minutes over the previous publication, primarily thanks to a new glitch in the way the game handles two events at once to skip large portions of a few stages, along with general optimization and lag reduction.

Metroid completed using just one item: the morphing ball.

While the CPUs were distracted, FractalFusion changed the dice on them and then left the board for a few minutes. When he came back, all the CPUs were crying. The fraud squad is still investigating.
This movie aims to defeat 4 CPU controlled players, ceasing to press buttons on the controller after as little time as possible. Luck is manipulated for the first 1:08, and then the CPUs are left to lose by themselves without requiring any further actions by the player.

This movie aims for the fastest time to get the CPU player bankrupt, and abuses luck to its fullest to make that happen. adelikat utilizes trades, a glitch, and a new innovation he discovered to bankrupt the CPU. This is the first Monopoly submission that does not depend on "stacking the deck" on the community chest or chance cards.
From power-on to bankruptcy, this movie is 00:12.75 seconds faster than the previous record. It is also 27 frames faster in terms of input.

River City Ransom is a goofy game that deserves a goofy TAS. This movie showcases cool tricks and some glitches that don't necessarily result in the fastest completion. We also have a movie which aims for speed.

In River City Ransom, Alex and Ryan face off against gangs of students and evil bosses to win their town back and rescue their girlfriends. Several bosses need to be found and beaten before you can enter River City High and beat up the final bad guys (including an obvious imitation of the Double Dragon heroes). The gameplay also has elements of an RPG, where you can level up your character with shop purchases, but none of that is done here.
A glitch that is abused often in this run, pressing Left and Right at the same time, causes the player character to do all sorts of crazy things and usually lose all of his power. This is done to reduce lag during running segments and abuse collision detection.
This run obsoletes the previous one by nearly a minute due to much more optimization of boss fights and some new tricks. Weapons are also used more, so expect to see some chains and trash cans!

This popular hack for Rockman 2 contains a wide variety of new bosses, weapons, levels, graphics, and music, going far beyond the capabilities of the original game.
Two versions of this hack exist - "normal" mode and "hard" mode, with the primary difference being no mercy invincibility on hard mode.
This run uses hard mode. The normal run is obsoleted despite being around 2 minutes faster due to playing on hard.

Created via collaboration among several hackers, Rockman: Spirits of Hackers extensively modifies the weapons, levels, bosses, and music of Rockman 6. Though labeled as incomplete, it was officially released by the team without plans for further updates.
In this run, Baddap1 uses Mega Man's new capabilities to rush through the levels and again put an end to Dr. Wily's attempt at world domination.

Some longlegged secret agent has to rescue his female partner who was kidnapped by Ku Klux Klan-wannabe terrorists led by some space alien wizard. Between the levels, the terrorists dance in front of a giant widescreen TV showing pictures of the woman in risqué positions and of their alien leader. (We wish we were making this up, but NES games can be pretty weird sometimes.)
The author uses a password to get the hardest difficulty, thus not having to finish the game twice. The author also improves on the previous run by about 51 seconds.

Rygar is an action game involving a hero with a shield as a weapon. Normally, the hero must obtain items, such as a grappling hook, to be able to explore the world of Garloz, and he must also defeat five bosses to gain access to the final area. However, these requirements can be circumvented with glitches. Indeed, this run kills no bosses except the final boss and does very little leveling.
In contrast to the any% run and the warpless run, which use the European version of Rygar, this movie uses the American version. The two ROM versions have some different glitches. Snake Rattle 'n Roll is a 3D game mostly about collecting objects along the line of "nibble bibbles". The biggest part of the game is the tricky maneuvers required to complete the big mountain levels that are difficult to perform in real time.

The guy with an infinite supply of ammo and insatiable bloodlust is back! Known as Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces in Europe, this game is, implicitly, Contra 2. Without the 2.

The guys who have an infinite supply of ammo and who destroy worlds bare-chested are back! Super C is completed as fast as possible, with an additional goal: do not kill enemies directly unless absolutely necessary to complete the game.
By using two players, self-sacrifice, and a number of new discoveries, Soig saves 00:51.45 over the previous movie by Heidman.

Bowser has kidnapped the princess (again) and Mario must save the day. But this time through, he takes a stroll. Nothing bothers Mario as he walks through all the stages, sometimes backwards, on his way to save the princess.
This movie demonstrates that it's possible to complete every single stage without pressing the B button. Having been bothered by the lack of running and shooting in this game, the ending outright asks the player to press B.
This movie also improves the previous one by 00:09.32 seconds through new strategies and better optimization.

Once again, Bowser has kidnapped Peach, but this time Mario isn't trying to rescue her quite as urgently. Fed up with getting no reward for his endeavors beyond cake, Mario takes a leaf out of Wario's book and decides that while rescuing Peach, he might as well make as much money as he can.
In this movie, the aim is to complete the game while collecting as many coins as possible without dying, doing so as fast as possible. In fact, Mario collects 1431 coins in total, which is rather surprising as there are only 1225 distinct coins in the game!

Bowser has kidnapped Peach again, but this time, Mario's hoarding tendencies are kicking in. He's grabbing all of the items in the kingdom, even when he doesn't really need them.
In this movie, the aim is to complete the game while collecting every possible item without dying, doing so as fast as possible.
DaSmileKat manages to improve on the previous movie by 00:01.38 seconds through careful optimization of almost every level.

Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach once again, but this time, Mario is tired of jumping around the kingdom to save her. So he instead takes a route that's a bit easier on his legs.
In this movie, the aim is to complete the game with the fewest A button presses possible. This movie uses more creative tricks and exploits than what you'd see in other movies for this game. A more in-depth explanation can be found in the authors' comments.

Super Mario Bros 3 completed fast ― without using the magic whistles.
Although this movie doesn't use the magic whistles, it does skip stages, and actually skips them quite a lot, with the aid of various items such as the hammers.
This is an improvement of about 44.5 seconds over the previous movie.

While decidedly not the same game, the Super Mario Bros. games on the NES are similar enough in game mechanics and controls that all four of them can be played at once with the same input.
This second version of the quad-run utilizes the credits glitch found in the newest Super Mario Bros. 3 run. As such, the focus is now on finishing Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels as fast as possible, allowing Super Mario Bros. 3 to entertain while waiting for the other three games to progress. The run also features an ending that may surprise you.

This movie doesn't aim to run up the score. Instead, it plays an entertaining game of American football by keeping the score close for drama and by utilizing a variety of wild plays with interceptions, fumbles, impossibly long passes, etc. Thus, the movie manipulates luck often.
In addition, the author exploits a number of bizarre bugs, such as CPU players tackling their own teammate, and a very unorthodox final play.
True tecmobowlers will enjoy the team choice and final score.

Tengen Tetris is a version of Tetris made by Atari, which pretty much follows the basic formula of stacking tetrominoes and completing lines. Even the theme music has a similar feel to the more familiar NES Tetris game by Nintendo.
This movie plays through just the final level, level 17, and clocks in at over one line per second. Notably, luck manipulation does not work the same way in this game as in other versions of Tetris, leading to quite different strategies.

The second quest of The Legend of Zelda is what you get by having completed the game once. It is more difficult than the first quest.
In this movie, the authors enter ZELDA as the player's name to start the 2nd quest without having to complete the game first.

Of all the challenging ways to play Legend of Zelda that people have attempted on a NES console, one of the most famous is the "swordless" challenge. In this challenge, the player must beat all of the game, up until the final boss Ganon, without using a sword. It is not possible to damage Ganon without a sword however, so many swordless runs reach Ganon's room to die there.
In order to actually complete the game, Lord Tom does pick up a sword and kills Ganon. However, the sword is only obtained shortly before attempting the final level, and even then, the sword is not used until absolutely necessary. In the meantime, sit back and watch a run which relies heavily on luck manipulation and effective bomb usage to beat the game very quickly. For more details, see the author's comments.

In this The Legend of Zelda hack, Link must save Hyrule (again), reclaiming the Triforce of Power from Thunderbird. Baxter does it masterfully, exploiting glitches from the original game to get the job done quickly. This movie completes both quests.

Zanac is one of those space shooter games in which you are trying to save the earth.
Due to the highly repetitive nature of this game, the hidden 9th input button (the console's Reset button) is used to enable stage select to warp to the final (12th) level. This results in an unusually long gray screen at the start of the movie. Starting on the final level with 3 lives and only the initial pea-shooter for a weapon normally makes the game near impossible to win.
This is the author's 4th iteration of this movie. It improves on the previous publication by almost 10 seconds by utilizing a hidden fairy and by better boss optimization.

Here is a warpless run of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (1988), which introduced RPG elements and a side-scrolling view instead the traditional Zelda overhead view. An evil magician has cast a sleep spell on Princess Zelda. Link must place 6 crystals in palaces throughout Hyrule in order to release the binding force that protects the Triforce of Courage hidden in the Great Palace.
This movie is an improvement of 00:09.32 seconds compared to the previous run. Most of the new time saved is from getting almost impossible fairy spawns at overworld traps. Please read the authors' comments for details.
This movie avoids using the extremely gamebreaking hyperspeed and scroll-lock glitches seen in the warp glitch branch. This movie also avoids all of the minorly gamebreaking wrong warps in order to significantly increase the technical skill required to create the movie; we also have a movie which does use these "glitched warps," which allows a rather different route through the game.
This movie was a part of a two-hour Zelda II TAS showcase with audio commentary by Arc, Inzult, Jackimus, Mithical9, and Feasel.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is quite different from most of the early games in the Legend of Zelda series. It combines an overworld view with side-scrolling platform stages. In addition, the character can gain experience and levels, visit towns, and earn spells and items which are needed to proceed.
Instead of aiming purely for speed, Arc and Inzult take a more comfortable journey through Hyrule in this movie, collecting every item, visiting every palace, and more along the way. Don't confuse "comfortable" with "slow" however, as the authors' extensive understanding of the game (seriously, check out the submission notes!) helps Link finish his quest at top speed.

After having been resurrected by dark priest Shaft, Dracula set out to destroy Richter Belmont's home village and kidnap some of the important characters for him to rescue. One of them is Maria Renard, a 12-year-old vampire huntress who is used as the player character in the second half of the movie after getting freed by Richter.
Despite her prepubescent age, Maria is faster and stronger than Richter, and one can only guess how she managed to fall a victim to kidnappers in the first place. Unfortunately, all of her speed advantages become nullified by a lengthy cutscene following her release, making this TAS slightly longer than the Richter mode.
This is a 2.5 second improvement to the previous movie.

Bushido Blade is a series of fighting games with a gimmick: everyone can die in one hit. This kind of gameplay lends itself well to time attacking and TASing.
Slash Mode is an unlockable feature where the challenge is to kill 100 opponents as fast as possible. This game adds on to the original Bushido Blade's Slash Mode with an on-screen timer and more variety in enemies and environments.
In this run, Dammit runs through Slash Mode as fast as possible, finishing with an ingame time of 3'34"76.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX, and was also the very first PSX game to have a published TAS.
Follow Richter (playable after you beat the game once) as he glitches and speeds through the castle on a quest to defeat Dracula. If you like fast sliding, dashing, uppercutting, and using precipitation to defeat bosses, you'll love this run.

Not only was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX but also the first PSX game to have a published run here. Follow Dracula's son Alucard as he glitches through the castle on a quest to end his father's life.
This run beats the game at level 1 with 0 experience, and the only official (recorded in the bestiary) kill being Dracula. A few other enemies are killed using a glitch to avoid the kill being recorded or experience being awarded.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX. Follow Dracula's son Alucard as he glitches through the castle on a quest to end his father's life.
This run is played on a Replay save file (not newgame+ because neither experience nor items are carried over) using the Luck Mode command. Using Replay allows the player to skip most cutscenes and alters what the librarian can sell. Using Luck Mode lowers the player's base strength which, among other changes, ironically makes the run faster by enabling a route filled with kicking enemies that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
A run that beats the game through save data corruption is available here. If you prefer the main character to have muscular bare arms and to pray to the rain gods to defeat bosses, you may enjoy the Richter version. After completing the story mode of Chocobo Racing nine times, one gains access to the secret character "Invincible". This run, starting from a save state, uses this character in time attack mode to put the other characters to shame.
This run pauses for a few seconds between tracks to show the final track times.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back is the second game of the Crash Bandicoot series developed by Naughty Dog. The story takes place immediately after the events of the previous game. It features similar gameplay to the other two games in the series.
This run from SuPeRbOoMfAn collects all Crystals and Gems from 27 levels and defeats all five bosses before destorying the Cortex Vortex with N. Brio's help as fast as possible without abusing any major glitches.

Sigma returns again and Earth is in great danger. Zero is off having a party all night, so Mega Man X steps in to do the job. Even if not as awesome as Zero, he still manages to do the job in less than 20 minutes while also getting the Ultimate Armor.

This is a TAS of Megaman X Zero 5 on Xtreme difficulty that completes all stages as fast as possible. This run improves the previous one by about 26 seconds.

X is trying to find the lost Maverick Hunter Zero, who has gone missing since X5. Of course, once found, Zero does most of the dirty work, while X is practically nowhere to be found.
This run completes all of the stages, showing off how nasty every level is on Xtreme difficulty. As always, Zero is much better suited to killing bosses than X. Zero also uses powerups that he wouldn't be able to use in an any% run.
The author, Rolanmen1, also improves the previous movie by 01:47.03 by taking a different route and using a new trick that allows him to skip the totem poles in Ground Scaravich's stage.

Capcom decided to make some easy money, so they recycled parts of Mega Man X5, threw in overly difficult trial-and-error gameplay, made almost everything an obstacle course, and called it Mega Man X6.
Rescuing all Reploids on Xtreme mode is inadvisable for all but the most hardcore, yet this TAS makes it look easy. Not only that, it collects everything that can be collected before beating the game.
In this run, Rolanmen1 shows off X's max potential, getting every collectible in the whole game, while Zero watches from the side and enjoys the show.

The author has provided an extra encode with item collection display and a special upscaling filter that reduces pixelization (nnedi3).

Capcom decided to make some easy money, so they recycled parts of Mega Man X5, threw in overly difficult trial-and-error gameplay, made almost everything an obstacle course, and called it Mega Man X6.
Rolanmen1 completes all stages as X and Zero using the same controller inputs across both. This goes to show that the two characters do in fact play similarly. It should be noted that a patch is needed to be able to play as Zero from the beginning; this is normally not allowed. Please refer to the rules for more details.

Metal Gear Solid was one of the original breakthrough titles in the stealth gaming genre. It follows Solid Snake, a soldier who is infiltrating a nuclear weapons facility on a remote Alaskan island in the Fox Archipelago, codenamed Shadow Moses. Snake must rescue two hostages from FOX-HOUND, a high-tech special forces unit gone rogue, and then stop FOX-HOUND from launching a nuclear warhead.
Changes from the original release of Metal Gear Solid include
  • Addition of first-person view.
  • A level of difficulty for newcomers.
  • Improved artificial intelligence for some enemies (including bosses) on higher difficulty settings.
  • An "Alternate Round" for each difficulty, with different enemy placements.
  • 300 VR Training missions on a separate disc.
In this run, theenglishman's goal is to beat all the bosses in the game; this results in the run actually playing far more of Disc 1 than our currently published any% run, which skips literally every boss on that disc. Don't go thinking this is a low-glitch run, though!

Changes from the original release of Metal Gear Solid include
  • Addition of first-person view.
  • A level of difficulty for newcomers.
  • Improved artificial intelligence for some enemies (including bosses) on higher difficulty settings.
  • An "Alternate Round" for each difficulty, with different enemy placements.
  • 300 VR Training missions on a separate disc.
Integral was planned for use in this branch from the start, because of a lengthy Liquid Snake monologue you can skip in Integral but not in the original version, as well as the added precision of analog controls; however, old PSX emulators could not play Integral. With the switch to the higher-accuracy PSXHawk, theenglishman was able to TAS this version, playing on Extreme difficulty in the Normal Round, and achieving the rank of "BIG BOSS" for his performance.
The raw improvement over the predecessor movie is around 3 minutes, but the improvement in gameplay is actually much more than that; the raw time is inflated slightly compared to the predecessor movie because of the switch to PSXHawk, which results in slightly longer (but more accurate) loading times on everything from transitions between rooms, to playing cutscenes and CODEC conversations.

Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (Special Missions in Europe) is a series of 300 action-packed extra missions for Metal Gear Solid with enough scintillating Snake-sneaking setpieces to last a lifetime. Originally a part of Integral, the 1999 Japanese re-release of the original game, the VR Missions received a standalone release a year later in North America and Europe as an extra bonus to satisfy fans hungry for more tactical espionage action.
In the Metal Gear universe, VR serves as a substitute for combat experience, allowing trainees to learn how to use weapons and participate in advanced combat scenarios without having to actually be on the battlefield, similar to the training programs in The Matrix. This concept of artificial or digital training serving as a poor man’s replacement for combat experience (particularly where child soldiers are concerned) has been a running theme in the series.
In this run, theenglishman sneaks, shoots, punches and investigates his way past the world leaderboards for each mission, this time skipping the Practice levels using SRAM, that saves him 34:33.79 minutes and makes the run much more entertaining overall compared to the one it obsoletes.

Once a proud, spiritual people, Mudokons have largely been reduced to slavery. Now they are the disposable, abusable workforce of the Glukkons.
This movie is just as odd as the world it features. Abe for no reason decides to commit a baseness upon Glukkons and destroy all the labor force they have industriously collected. He doesn't care that it's his own mates who will die. He's not concerned that he too will be milled in the end. The only thing he has to say about it is "Oops". Twisted creep.
This playaround by Dooty (who also made the any% and 100% runs) aims to finish the game as fast as possible while killing as many Mudokons as possible.

Join Carlos in a race to clean up the streets of Raccoon City and enjoy the architecture and the new wall colors in a quick run of this well-known minigame from Resident Evil 3.
The objective of the minigame is to reach a specified point in a set time limit which can be extended by defeating enemies. Needless to say, the timer never even comes close to running out here.
This run begins from a save state which has the minigame unlocked, which can be generated by replaying the author's run of the full game. This is not normally allowed by the site, though an exception can be made if prior approval is granted.

Tekken Force, a paramilitary organization protecting the Mishima karate fighters, is nearly obliterated by the mighty Ogre. Heihachi Mishima's only hope is his grandson Jin Kazama, who lives with his mother Jun, unaware of his legacy. When the Ogre attacks his home and presumably kills his mother, Jin seeks out his grandfather and learns the martial arts of the family. On his nineteenth birthday, Heihachi announces the King of the Iron Fist Tournament 3, hoping that Jin will use the opportunity take out the meddlesome Ogre.
Tekken 3, like its predecessors, is a versus fighting game. New features include prominently featured side-stepping, allowing characters to retreat into the background and back during fights, more combo throws, fifteen more characters, and reduced jumping capabilities to allow for more realistic combat. Also included are two minigames: Tekken Force, a beat-em-up stage that unlocks a new character, and Tekken Ball, a beach volleyball variant where characters are hurt by the ball.
This run features Mokujin, who first appears in this game and later appears in all but Tekken 4, where he is temporarily replaced by another character named Combot. Unlike Mokujin, Combot can only mimic a different character's moveset for every match instead of every round. Mokujin is meant truly to test how well you know who you are, how well you can play as said character, whether you can play the matchups you are given, and whether you can keep the opponent from guessing which character you are.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the Sega Saturn is a port of the popular PSX game of the same name. This version features the console-exclusive character Maria, who easily blazes through the castle, proving that she's not just another damsel in distress. EZGames69 uses a combination of magic powers, kicks, glitches and luck manipulation to free the world, yet again, from Dracula's minions.
EZGames69 improves his previous movie by 62 frames if emulation differences are not accounted for, thanks to better luck manipulation on the Griffin fight and better optimisation.

Sonic the Hedgehog Megamix (commonly shortened to Sonic Megamix) is a work-in-progress multiperson disassembly modification of the original Sonic the Hedgehog videogame for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, developed by Team Megamix and more recently moved to the Sega Mega-CD.
The game features the ability to play as one of five different characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Mighty the Armadillo, Shadow the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna. It is an extensive reworking of the original game, featuring new art, music, abilities, layouts, and other things.
The authors complete the game in record time using glitches such as "zips" to gain super fast speeds.

ActRaiser (1990) is a critically acclaimed SNES game which combines two major gameplay phases: a god simulator and an action platformer. You play the role of God "the Master", who awakens from his slumber only to find that the human civilization is completely wrecked, and hordes of demons are roaming free.
This run plays through the "Special Mode," which is a mode where the god simulators are removed and the levels become harder. The Japanese version is used for even higher difficulty.

From the opposite side of the usual formula of breaking a game to reach the credits as fast as possible, Saturn finishes Chrono Trigger in a single pass while trying to get as much done as possible without glitching the game out and spending too much time grinding. Consequently this video actually looks like an otherwise normal playthrough by an extremely skilled player.
This run aims for maximal completion within reasonable constraints that don't sacrifice entertainment too much. This includes:
  • All forms of Spekkio except the highest level (Pink Nu) are defeated
  • All Tabs (stat upgrade items) that do not respawn are collected
  • All characters' Techs are learned
  • All the sidequests mentioned by Gaspar are completed (to the point he no longer mentions them)
  • At least 1 of every equipable item is collected
It isn't technically possible to do everything possible in Chrono Trigger without New Game+ and resetting a few times, but this run aims to get most of it done.
Some very heavy experience grinding occurs between 2:16:45 and 2:26:18. Viewers may wish to skip through this segment of the video.

Trying to strike a compromise with peace activists, the guy who destroys the world bare-chested has been ordered to stop an alien invasion while taking as few lives as possible. As such, this run completes Contra III: The Alien Wars while only destroying enemies and obstacles if they prevent advancement. This requires much more careful dodging than the other run that avoids the warp glitch does.
Our hero takes the dodging one step further by adding the limitation that he cannot shoot enemy projectiles. However, frustrated by the lack of carnage and by the political pressure, our hero lets off steam sometimes by shooting the scenery and doing entertaining dances and poses.
This run improves the previous publication by 00:25.41 seconds.

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are on a quest to retrieve the former's banana horde from the Kremlings. But with less hurry than usual.
In this run, Tompa completes the game while avoiding the Y button that allows characters to run and to roll. Game mechanics such as grabbing a rope and getting shot out of a barrel are used to boost character speeds. See the author's comments for details.

EarthBound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.
It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.
Although this being a speedrun (tool-assisted at that), most of the plot of the game is intact, making this movie very entertaining to watch even as a TAS.

Final Fantasy IV (renamed to Final Fantasy II in North-American publication) was a revolution to the RPG genre. It was the first to introduce the active battle system, among many other redeeming qualities.
This movie plays through the game in a mere 2 hours, 53 minutes and 14 seconds. It aims for real time, but has a secondary goal of lowest in-game time when that does not incur an expense in real time. The in-game completion time is 1:59:28.

Note: This movie resets the game console a few times, first saving the game and then loading it, so to watch it on an emulator, you will need an emulator that supports recording the console resets.
This movie was made with the original English-language version. The downloadable encodes were encoded with the Action Replay code 0495DCFF, which keeps the music volume from decreasing while the game is paused. This greatly reduces the annoyance factor of constant pausing during battles, which is done to save time.

Watch as two Final Fantasy games, V and VI (VI is also III in North-American publication), are beaten with one controller's input. Since FFVI takes longer to beat than FFV, the FFV run also beats a few optional bosses which are not fought in the single-game run of FFV. The two games finish at the same time.
Since FFV is only available in Japanese, FFVI is also played with the Japanese version. The (J) version of FFVI also has an equipment glitch which is not present in the (U) version. Otherwise, this run of FFVI is quite similar to our single-game FFVI movie.

Kaizo Mario (友人マリオ Yūjin Mario) is a Nicovideo phenomenon born from a person's desire to make his friend play his super-hard Mario hack and post the results on Nicovideo. By chance, this hack made its fame on Youtube when a team of Let's Play gamers obtained the hack and recorded a video of them playing it. The most well-known YouTube video in this series is the first part of ProtonJonSA's attempt of Special Stage 2 and his subsequent nervous breakdown.
Kaizo Mario World 3 (友人マリオ3 Yūjin Mario 3) is the third installment of the Kaizo Mario series. In addition to the video's popularity, the hack is well-done in comparison to the previous two.
Themes that are common to Kaizo hacks:
  • Extremely rigid windows of opportunity, with missed opportunities resulting in death.
  • Set-ups that demand the highest caliber of Super Mario World physics abuse.
  • Set-ups that require stunts that are tantamount to glitches.
  • Traps that cannot be foreseen without knowing that they exist, including but not limited to invisible blocks and being killed after apparently clearing a level.
In this run, ISM and Mister break the game completely with glitches, just as in the 96-exit TAS of Super Mario World. Said glitches involve making things appear out of nowhere, glitching through walls, and carrying Yoshi through to the next level, something not intended by the maker of this hack.

Killer Instinct is a classic fighting game ported to the SNES from an arcade machine. It features an advanced combo system, rich pre-rendered graphics and nicely arranged music. However, the latter two were somewhat toned down in this version compared to the original.
In this movie, Spinal takes down his enemies by slicing them up, hitting them with their own abilities, and (gasp!) making them dance to music!

Rockman & Forte (ロックマン&フォルテ), known as Mega Man & Bass in the western world, used to be the last game chronologically released for the original Rockman/Megaman series, until Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chōsensha (ロックマン&フォルテ 未来からの挑戦者) was released on the WonderSwan handheld system.
This game bears a striking resemblance to Mega Man 8, not only in style, but in excessive graphic detail. Similarly to Mega Man X4, the player has the option to choose one of two characters to play through. In this run, Forte is chosen.
sparky takes the game apart with some glitches that allow Forte to zip around in walls. This run is 00:59.83 seconds faster than the previous run, mostly due to new glitches. Read the author's comments for more details.

Since moving to the SNES 16-bit land, Mega Man has taken the secret identity X, but everyone knows it's still him because he's the only blue robot who shoots three pellets at a time at other robots, steals their weapons, and zips through walls.
FractalFusion plays this game a bit differently than usual. He abuses a failed password in order to obtain all weapons before the intro stage; this also causes all 8 Mavericks to be flagged as beaten, so the run proceeds directly to the Sigma stages after the intro stage.
Because the failed password does not include X's armor upgrades and the Maverick stages are never entered, the dash boots (normally impossible to avoid) are never collected, meaning that Mega Man X spends the entire run walking through the stages; this provides more opportunities for entertainment than usual. This video of MK3 for the SNES is no exception, as the author Dark Noob swaps between all the different characters to show off the wide variety of techniques, secrets, and humorous bugs that are possible.
Though he is technically the villain, you have to admire Shao Kahn's dedication to keeping up with the action in his role as announcer as the fights get more and more bizarre. At times even he seems confused as to what is going on.

Like all of the Mortal Kombat games, MKII is about warriors fighting in a tournament for inspecific power and fame. Shang Tsung is chosen for his ability to transform into other characters.
This movie aims to demonstrate as many quirks and fatalities of the game as possible. Examples include two Shang Tsungs with a Raiden child, a headless Reptile eating Kitana's head and a bloody clone of Jax. The AI is also humiliated.

In Riddick Bowe Boxing, you can face off against a slew of imaginary fighters as well as Riddick Bowe himself. The game features both a career mode, where you rise through the ranks until you battle Bowe, and an exhibition mode where you can choose any two boxers to face off.
In this playaround, laranja chooses exhibition mode and picks the worst boxer to battle against Bowe. Normally, it would be nearly impossible for him to win. Using tool-assisted precision, not only does he beat Bowe, but he does it while landing every hit and taking no damage. In the process, he toys around with the champion until the match is over.

Shapeshifting dogs. Evil robots. Alchemy. Cheesy B movie references. These are all par for the course in Secret of Evermore, a very loose "sequel" to Secret of Mana. The story follows a boy that is thrust into a virtual world and finds himself with no immediate means to escape. As the boy travels, the geography changes to reflect certain eras of real-life history, adding a unique aspect to the game.

A Secret of Mana TAS has finally come to TASVideos!
Secret of Mana is a widely popular action RPG published by Square. It is internationally regarded as the first game of the Mana series, though the Japanese title is Seiken Densetsu 2, so it is the sequel of Final Fantasy Adventure. It utilizes real-time battles like many other action RPGs while including some unique features such as the Ring Command and multiplayer action.
Touch-me beats the game very quickly, using three players simultaneously and a whole host of glitches. For instance, many bosses can be hit for 999 instant damage using a charge counter glitch, and certain plot points are skipped. See the submission comments for more details.

This hack of Super Mario World, created with Lunar Magic, contains a Star World which contains themed levels that connect to various locations on the map. Like the original Super Mario World, these levels can be used as a makeshift warp zone. This movie demonstrates this path - navigating the Star World to charge straight to Bowser, leaving much of the game untouched.

Arthur's fiancée is once again kidnapped by demons soon before their marriage. Once more Sir Arthur must brave the forces of the underworld in his skivvies. Watch as Ferret Warlord runs through this infamously hard game in record time!
Normally, to fight the final boss of the game, you must play through the game twice. To make the movie less repetitive, Ferret Warlord uses a code to start at the final bosses of the first playthrough. Furthermore, the player must have a special weapon in order to fight the final boss, and this weapon can only be found when the player has fully upgraded armor. Ferret Warlord obtains this weapon at the end of the first autoscrolling level.

The Lost Levels is a remake of the game released in Japan as Super Mario Bros 2. It introduces a number of new obstacles into the standard Super Mario Bros. formula, including poisonous mushrooms, wind, reverse warp zones, and of course many tricky jumps. It's difficult enough that Nintendo of America decided to completely re-theme a different game and release that as Super Mario Bros. 2 instead; The Lost Levels is the first time the Japanese sequel was released to the rest of the world.
This TAS uses Mario's brother Luigi. He jumps higher than Mario, but acts slower in many ways. However, the movie is in no way worse than the Mario version - some new creative solutions have been found.

Super Mario Kart is the first in a popular series of games starring the Mario cast racing go-karts. This run aims to get record times in all tracks at 150cc difficulty. This is achieved mostly by jumping straight into walls, bottomless pits, and lava, among many other things. Mushrooms are also used frequently due to their mysteriously friction-free propulsion powers. A high amount of wall-bouncing is required.
This run is over a minute and a half faster than the previous published run, due to new exploits of the definition of a lap.

Mario's doctor heard about the "Magic Mushrooms" which make Mario grow to twice his normal size and let him break bricks. Fearing for Mario's health, he orders Mario to avoid those nasty powerups.
This run aims to complete as many exits as possible without collecting any permanent powerups, including Mushrooms, Fire flowers, Feathers, Switch Palace blocks. Unable to fly, Mario is forced to confront most obstacles and overcome them in unique ways. Riding Yoshi is also banned. 86 out of the total 96 exits are completed.

There are many hacks for Super Mario World, made with Lunar Magic, but few of them offer a whole new pleasurable game. The Second Reality Project is notable for being the first hack not made by the author of Lunar Magic that is still considered to be a decent game. The game spawned an Award-Winning series of hacks known for pushing Super Mario World to its limits, pulling in features from other games, and still adding on a few things of its own. This hack, The Second Reality Project Reloaded, is a remake of the original hack with all new graphics, custom music, and other great additions to help set the game apart.
This hack can be regarded as a true sequel to Super Mario World, picking up where it left off. Bowser has hatched a plan to rebuild his airships from Super Mario Bros. 3, and brings along his kids for support, hoping to use his newfound power and henchmen in the "Second Reality" to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom once and for all. Mario (and Luigi) must travel to the strange new Second Reality and face foes and puzzles they've never seen before. The game contains 8 classic worlds, as per the standard in previous games, as well as a special Bowser World, a Sonic World used as a short cut system similar to the Star World from Super Mario World, and one other...

At the end of Metroid II: Return of Samus, there is but one Metroid left in the universe. Bad things happen, and Samus Aran must once again head for Planet Zebes to battle Mother Brain, Ridley, and the Space Pirates. (And a few other bosses too.)
This movie improves on both prior low% runs (one that collects the Ice Beam and one that collects the Speed Booster) by collecting the Speed Booster and using various Shinespark-related glitches to render the Gravity Suit unnecessary, pushing the total required number of items from 14 down to 13. The author's comments are very detailed, and well worth a read if you're curious about just how everything was done.
There are a number of other routes that can be taken while still getting 13 items, but all of those routes require a specific glitch when fighting Draygon which gives you a non-infinite but arbitrarily large amount of ammunition; the item route in this movie does not permit the use of this glitch. If you would like to see this glitch, it is featured in the following (now-obsoleted) iteration of the any% run.

However, this particular installment isn't considered canon—it is an SNES-exclusive mash-up of the first two R•Type games.
In a nutshell, the series' plot is about the evil Bydo empire, which is a highly developed alien lifeform with hivemind mentality—akin to the Borg or the Zerg. The player pilots a spacecraft on a mission to destroy the Bydo. The craft's most prominent weapon is the so-called force—a spherical pod which is, in fact, a living piece of Bydo flesh and an indestructible mineral at the same time! Conveniently, the pod can be attached to the player's craft to shield it from bullets, or launched at enemies to inflict large amounts of damage.
All R•Type games are known to be very unforgiving; they require the player to learn strict paths that revolve memorizing safe paths through stages and tactically using the force pod to quickly dispatch of enemies and protect the ship. The author of this TAS, however, throws all the strictness and tacticalness out the window to play around and just ram most of the enemies with the pod. (Try this in realtime if you want to know true frustration.)
Other than that, the movie uses a password to access the second loop's difficulty level (eloquently called "PRO") without having to beat the game twice. It still doesn't get the good ending, though.

Normally, Top Gear 2 involves racing through many gruelling tracks across sixteen countries, gradually upgrading one's vehicle until it can become competitive in the top tiers.
Here a password glitch is used to skip directly to the final country without entering the password itself. Dooty also uses a stock vehicle that's substantially slower than the competition it faces - conditions in which any human player would find it impossible to win. Yet this is no obstacle for perfect reflexes and a great deal of luck.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is one of the most popular games in the Mortal Kombat series. It was released to arcades in 1995 as an update to Mortal Kombat 3 and was ported to the SNES the following year. It introduced several new characters and two new gameplay modes.

Watch as Mega Man takes on the latest set of Robot Masters and everyone's favorite mad roboticist for the tenth time in the classic series.
This run is played on normal difficulty (the highest available with no prior save data) and, amongst other feats, takes no damage at all (Mr. Perfect achievement), kills one of every enemy (World Warrior achievement), and manipulates more extra lives and large power-ups than you've probably ever seen before in a single playthrough. The final in-game time is 20:04.
In a fit of cosmic irony, this publication, which is the first for a current set-top console, is of a game deliberately designed to be a throwback to the NES days.

This is the site's second published Wii run, and is of the same game as the first. Diggidoyo again shows his expertise at the Mega Man series, this time utilizing Bass's speed and powerful weaponry to finish 05:24.12 faster than Mega Man.

Set in Japanese Edo period's Honshu Oboro Muramasa revolves around fast-paced spectacle fighting with RPG elements against vicious demons summoned by the titular Demon Blades. Two characters are available. Here, Bernka plays the amnesiac ninja Kisuke on highest difficulty, by way of which he gets granted only one hitpoint. Of course, this doesn't intimidate him in the slightest.

I Wanna Be The Boshy is a free, notoriously difficult 2D platform game created by Danish game developer Jesper "Solgryn" Erlandsen. It is a fangame of I Wanna Be the Guy with the title being a reference to it and many other fangames with similar titles.
I Wanna Be The Boshy is known for being extremely difficult often including unforeseeable traps, random chance, intentionally poor hitboxes and very hard platforming. Many elements such as bosses, playable characters and NPCs are tributes/parodies of popular video games, such as Super Mario, Kirby and Street Fighter while other elements are references to obscure games such as The Cheetahmen or originally made.

Iji is a freeware game released by Daniel Remar in 2008. Rosenkreuzstilette (ローゼンクロイツスティレッテ) is a platform game published by independent Japanese studio [erka:es]. Gameplay resembles a Mega Man clone, with Spiritia collecting various weapons from each boss defeated, and alternate protagonist Grolla playing more like Zero from the Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero series.

This movie uses Spiritia. For more action, we also have a Grolla movie by the same author.
It is 57.34 seconds faster than the previous run by in-game timing parameters, and an improvement of 1087 frames(18.1s) through directly comparable improvements. (Note that the reason why this run appears to be 3s slower than the old run by standard TAS timing parameters is because the published run ends input before the final boss fight whereas this one does not, since doing so is detrimental to in-game time).

Touhou Kanjuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (東方紺珠伝 ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom) is the fifteenth official installment of the Touhou Project series by Team Shanghai Alice. There are four playable characters: Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame, Sanae Kochiya, and Reisen Udongein Inaba, each with their unique shot and spellcard (otherwise known as a "bomb" in other (bullet hell) shoot-em-ups). It also features two main game modes: Legacy Mode, which functions similarly to the other Touhou games, but also Pointdevice Mode, a gameplay mode that removes lives and continues from the game but adds chapter checkpoints.
The story of the main game goes as follows: Someone is causing havoc in the Lunar Capital, and evidently, Lunarians have come to purify Gensokyo to make it suitable for them to live there (as they have a thing against what they consider "impurity"). With the help of the Ultramarine Orb Elixir (or not), the girls must now set out to stop this invasion and find the perpetrator behind this incident.
This run by kopiapoa plays the Extra Stage, which is unlocked by clearing the game on Legacy Mode without using any continues on any difficulty, as Reisen. He extensively grazes bullets in order to increase the point item value to its eventual maximum. By also milking the boss's attack patterns for score, he reaches an impressive final score of 2,429,908,660 points. For reference, the best known unassisted score is 1'016'971'530 points by kisara.
