Knuckles' Chaotix is a Sonic game that doesn't feature Sonic. The story follows Knuckles the Echidna as he tries to save his friends from Dr. Robotnik, one at a time, by tying an elastic band of "ring energy" between himself and each of them.
The gameplay is similar to that of earlier Sonic games, and after each stage, the next level is selected via roulette. These roulettes and the game's cutscenes comprise about 66% of the total movie length, so we recommend skipping through them.

Dragster, released in 1980 for the Atari 2600, is the first video game developed by Activision. It was programmed by David Crane, who later wrote Pitfall! The object of the game is to either beat the player's opponent across the screen, or to race against the clock for best time, depending on the settings used.
The game is well known as having the first console speedrun with the world record of 5.51 by Todd Rogers in 1982 according to Twin Galaxies. This record is known as the oldest, unbeaten world record in all of speedrunning.
MrWint & Omnigamer decided to try and match the elusive 5.51, and disassembled the entire game looking for how the 5.51 was achieved. After conducting their research, they found that the long sought 5.51 was outright impossible to achieve within the internal conditions of the game. After lots of flamewars, the now infamous Todd Rogers's record has been taken down, leading to his ban from Twin Galaxies.
This run achieves the fastest possible time of 5.57 on player two while also maximizing the distance, with player one completing the track in the lowest amount of input frames. It also improves the predecessor movie by 00:00.10 seconds, which translates to 00:00.02 seconds if you discard emulation differences. Ninja Golf is an Atari 7800 video game which combines scrolling beat 'em up with golf simulation gameplay. Released in 1990, it later gained some renown for its outlandish subject matter and unique blend of gameplay styles.
The player starts each hole by aiming his ball and shooting it toward the green. He then runs toward the ball, in traditional sidescroller fashion, fighting various enemies encountered along the way. These enemies include other ninjas, gophers, birds, giant mutant frogs, sharks and more.
The enemies faced depends on the environment the ninja golfer is currently in. Sharks are encountered in water hazards and snakes in the sand traps. Ninjas are encountered in all the environments, including underwater.
In this run, adelikat sports, fights, and runs his way through multiple ninjas, sharks, and even dragons to complete possibly the strangest nine holes of golf.

Donkey Kong is an arcade platform game released by Nintendo in 1981. It presented an early (if not the first) example of the platform genre, and was the first to incorporate multiple playfields, as well as the ability to jump. It is also the first game designed for Nintendo by Shigeru Miyamoto, and his influence was immediately apparent, as he introduced both the eponymous Donkey Kong and Mario (originally named Mr. Video and then Jumpman) in his debut game. Drag Race is an arcade game released in 1977 by Kee Games (a subsidiary of Atari). Drag Race was designed by David Crane before the Great Exodus from Atari that would lead to the formation of Activision. At Activision, David Crane would redesign Drag Race for the Atari 2600, released in 1980 as the more widely-known Dragster. This unauthorized adaptation, among other litigation between Atari and Activision, would not be resolved until years later. The cabinet for Drag Race features controls for 2 players, including a steering wheel, a 4-way gear shifter, and a gas pedal. The cabinet even has functional analog tachometers to indicate when to shift! The display is black and white with overlays for color and text. Interestingly, the sound is in stereo, with each player hearing only the sound of their respective dragster in their speaker. The game's mechanics are inventive and gameplay is fun and exciting--as it would later be for Dragster.

In Jail Break, the game's hero, Aki, must fight through 5 stages to rescue the warden of a prison following a mass escape.
This game is quite advanced for it's time. It offers good multi-sprite movement and decent frustrating artificial intelligence. It also has a host of semi-understandable speech phrases such as "Help me!", "Save the hostages.", "The warden has been taken hostage."
But whatever, none of that matters after what £e Nécroyeur has done to the game with some intense glitching. Jungle Hunt is an arcade game produced and released by Taito in 1982. The original version of the game, Jungle King, was the subject of a lawsuit levied against Taito by the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs for copyright infringement for using a likeness of the Tarzan character. Jungle King featured a long-haired feral man in a fur loincloth swinging from vine to vine in the jungle, and most damning of all, an unauthorized reproduction of actor Johnny Weissmuller's famous Tarzan yell. As a result, the hero of the game was replaced with a stereotypical Victorian era "gentleman explorer", the vines were changed to ropes, and the Tarzan yell was replaced with a short tune. On a technical note, Jungle Hunt is one of the first games to feature parallax scrolling. And the music has a rousing jungle beat! You are Rockford, and you have to dig through monster infested caves in search of diamonds. In each level, you must collect a certain number of these diamonds in order to open a portal to the next stage. Enemies can be squashed by falling boulders, which are released when the ground below them is removed or they are pushed onto empty ground. Be careful, though, because these can also squash you. In later levels, difficulty is increased by many puzzle elements and shorter time limits.

In this TAS, Ilari & Truncated clear the game in a blindingly fast 19.45 seconds utilizing subframe optimization and rapid keyboard-twisting input. For details, read the authors' comments.
The run is so fast that the emulator can't draw all of the game's video output, so the downloadable encodes are made with a hacked version of the emulator that draws all of them. There is also a secondary YouTube encode that slows the gameplay footage down to 14% speed.

CD-Man is a Pac-Man clone first released in 1989, then updated to Version 2.0 in 1992. The game speed options range from the really slow "Zzzzz..." to the mind-numbingly fast "Warp". Five levels are present in Version 2.0 of the game, unlike the original version, which ended at level 3.
Author c-square controls two characters simultaneously at the highest speed setting and clears the 5 levels twice in 3.71 seconds, making it one of the fastest published TASes on this site.

Commander Keen 1: Marooned on Mars started the iconic game series. In this episode, aliens from the planet Vorticon VI find out about the eight year-old genius and plan his destruction. While Keen is out exploring the mountains of Mars, the Vorticons steal vital parts of his ship and take them to distant Martian cities! Keen must wrest the parts back from their wicked, clawed hands.
In this run, the author takes back what is Keen's without firing shots at any organic lifeform. Reading the author's comments is recommended.

Commander Keen 2: The Earth Explodes (1990) is the second game in the Commander Keen saga. In it, the Vorticon mothership intends to destroy Earth, and only eight-year old Billy Blaze, as Commander Keen, can save us.
Here the author beats back the Vorticon invasion in slightly under 5 minutes, leaving one to wonder why we here on Earth bother with military defense at all. It's not quite that easy though; reading the author's comments is recommended to understand the planning and manipulation required for Keen to waltz by Vorticon after Vorticon.

From the submission comments: It's Commander Keen 3! Released in 1990, this is the final game in the Vorticon trilogy, using the same engine as Keens 1 and 2. This time Keen must face the Grand Intellect, an evil leader who enslaved all Vorticons and indoctrinated them with only one thought: "Keen must die!"
While there are 16 levels total, only 3 are required to beat the game. In RTA timing this run finishes in 1:37.68 and beats the cancelled run by 30.39 seconds.

Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software, and is the first episode of Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy.
Several months after the freeing the Vorticons from Mortimer McMire, Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) finds out that an unknown race called the Shikadi are planning to destroy the Milky Way. He sets course towards Gnosticus IV on a quest to discover their location with the Oracle's aid. Upon arrival, he discovers that the Shikadi have captured the Council Members. In order to save the universe, Keen must fly to the Shadowlands and rescue them.

Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software. It is a direct continuation of the previous episode of Goodbye Galaxy, in which Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) has learned from the Oracle of Gnosticus IV that the evil Shikadi plan to blow up the galaxy with their doomsday device, the Omegamatic (It slices! It dices! It causes a 100,000 light year-diameter quantum explosion!). Naturally, he sets out to sabotage the machine and stop the Shikadi.
Using a series of glitches, Keen completes only four stages to get to the end game, only one of which takes any significant length of time, and destroys the Quantum Explosion Dynamo, the core of the Omegamatic in the impossibly short time of 2:02. In the process, he manages to inadvertently prevent the Shikadi from accomplishing their escape (though you have to watch the ending very closely to figure out that this has happened here).

Watch as Keen goes over, around, or through everything in his way to beat the entire game in a bit over three minutes. In Keen Dreams, Commander Keen goes to sleep and finds himself in the land of Tuberia, where he discovers that Earth children are being trapped in their sleep to work as slaves for the evil King Boobus Tuber. Out of ammo and lacking his trusty pogo stick, Keen must resort to scavenging Flower Power and Boobus Bombs from the local flora in order to combat the tuberian threat.

The main character is a courier making an emergency delivery by jetpack of an important package to one of Genoq's top researchers, Jean-Paul Derrida (a name likely inspired by the philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Jacques Derrida), and who is happily oblivious to the carnage until the lab's doors lock behind him. Arumana no Kiseki is an FDS-only platformer with an interesting grappling hook mechanic. Perhaps not surprisingly for a rather complicated mechanic like this one, it can be abused heavily to clip through walls and most of several levels.
This run is an update of the predecessor movie that aiqiyou improved by 00:21.03 seconds through heavier optimization and better planning.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (Japanese title: Dracula II: Noroi no Fuuin (ドラキュラII 呪いの封印) is the story of Simon's horrible weekend without sleep. Two years after defeating Dracula, the hero is physically weakened by Dracula's curse. He must gather Dracula's remains and incinerate them at the ruins of Castlevania in order to end the curse.
Through a death warp only present in the FDS version, Fortranm and Burb defeat Dracula in record time. Please read the authors' comments for more details.
We also have a run of the NES version (which doesn't perform the death warp) right here.

Eggerland is a predecessor of the NES Adventures of Lolo games, and in certain ways, it has much more features than Adventures of Lolo 1.
This movie abuses a couple of the game bugs in a surprising way.
Note that this is a Famicom Disk System game. Read What is FDS for more information.
Also note that this movie is about 42 seconds longer than the previous movie. This is due to the inaccurate (shorter) FDS load times emulated by famtasia.

Esper Dream is an action RPG for the Famicom Disk System. It stars a boy with extrasensory perception (ESP) who has been transported into a book and must save the world inside by rescuing a mayor's daughter and collecting two special items. In addition to his ESP powers, he can use projectile weapons on his quest.
This run completes the game in record time by manipulating enemy position in battles, using the weapons and ESP powers strategically, and getting a large number of esper points (EP)--necessary for using the ESP powers--via an underflow glitch.

Otocky was created by Toshio Iwai in 1987 and was only released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System. It is best described as a musical side-scrolling shoot 'em up where the primary weapon is a ball which, when fired in one of eight directions, plays different musical notes on the primary instrument quantized to the beat of the background music.
Needless to say, when such a weapon is put into the hands of a tool-assisted speedrunner, you might just find yourself humming along to the end result.

This game is Super Mario Bros., the original, but on the Famicom Disk System. It is much similar to the ROM version of the game, except for one minor difference that is demonstrated here.
The -1 stage is completely different. In the NES and Unisystem versions, the -1 stage repeats infinitely and cannot be completed, but in FDS, it can be completed, and then come -2 and -3.
The -3 stage in FDS is a castle level, and completing it ends the game, even though it says "princess is in another castle". The princess is not seen in the ending, but she is sighted twice in the -1 stage, as shown in this movie.
This movie is 84 frames faster than the previous one due to the use of a "cheap trick".

Mario has eaten too many poisonous mushrooms and as a result, decided to go on a furious killing spree. In this berserker state he has also gained the new secret ability to walk through walls at will.
Wondering how some tricks work? Information is available at Super Mario Bros. Tricks page.
This movie is 27 frames faster than the previous version due to new improvements in 1-2 and 8-4.

This is the real Super Mario Bros 2. It was never officially released in the USA and Europe. It was later ported to SNES, and released as "Lost Levels" on Super Mario All-stars, which we have a warpless Mario run of.
FDS means Famicom Disk System. It was a Japanese disk-unit version of the NES.

The second quest of The Legend of Zelda is what you get by having completed the game once. It is more difficult than the first quest. In this movie, the authors enter ZELDA as the player's name to start the 2nd quest without having to complete the game first.
The authors in this run also enter some of their own code, and don't really complete the game a second time either – yet somehow do. See the authors' notes for more details.

The Mysterious Murasame Castle, also known as its original Japanese release title Nazo no Murasamejou, is a Famicom Disk System game developed by Nintendo EAD and published in 1986, only two months after The Legend of Zelda which it bears some similarities to. The story takes place in Edo period Japan. The titular Murasame Castle is taken over by a mysterious alien creature, who extends its power to four other neighboring castles. The daimyō lords of each castle are each given an evil sphere of power, and they use this power to summon armies of ninja and monsters to terrorize the nearby villages. Shōgun Tokugawa Ietsuna sends out samurai apprentice Takamaru to investigate the castles, defeat each castle lord along the way, and stop the aliens.
J.Y and BakuLuLU defeats said alien creature and restores peace to the region in record time, saving 00:05.31 seconds from the previous movie. in the process!

Viewers who have photosensitivity problems may want to avoid watching as there's a high amount of flashing visuals after defeating the final boss fight which can become uncomfortable to watch.
