In Dodge 'Em (1980), you control a race car on a four lane track, and your goal is to collect all of the dots in order to earn points and advance to the next level! The race track is divided into four quadrants with a break in the lanes between them, and you can change lanes only within these breaks. A second car will travel in the opposite direction and try to get into your lane and crash you, so you need to make sure you switch to any lane it isn't in! Dragster, released in 1980 for the Atari 2600, is the first video game developed by Activision. It was programmed by David Crane, who later wrote Pitfall! The object of the game is to either beat the player's opponent across the screen, or to race against the clock for best time, depending on the settings used.
The game is well known as having the first console speedrun with the world record of 5.51 by Todd Rogers in 1982 according to Twin Galaxies. This record is known as the oldest, unbeaten world record in all of speedrunning. Omnigamer decided to try and match the elusive 5.51, and disassembled the entire game looking for how the 5.51 was achieved. After conducting his research, Omnigamer found that the long sought 5.51 was impossible to achieve within the conditions of the game, putting into doubt the veracity of the record of Todd Rogers.
Instead, this run achieves the fastest possible time of 5.57 on player one, with player two completing the track in the lowest amount of input frames.
This run has been console verified by dwangoAC using true's Multireplay device (latch per vsync using extraction board).

The game is based on the comic strip B.C. by Johnny Hart, with the title being a play on the title of the contemporaneous film Quest for Fire.
In the game, the player takes the role of the caveman Thor, who has to rescue his girlfriend, "Cute Chick", who has been kidnapped by a dinosaur. Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software. It is a direct continuation of the previous episode, in which Keen has learned from the Oracle of Gnosticus IV that the evil Shikadi plan to blow up the galaxy with their doomsday device, the Omegamatic (It slices! It dices! It causes a 100,000 light year-diameter quantum explosion!). Naturally, he sets out to sabotage the machine and stop the Shikadi.
Using a series of glitches, Keen completes only four stages to get to the end game, only one of which takes any significant length of time, and destroys the Quantum Explosion Dynamo, the core of the Omegamatic in the impossibly short time of 2:42. In the process, he manages to inadvertently prevent the Shikadi from accomplishing their escape (though you have to watch the ending very closely to figure out that this has happened here).

The use of glitchy warps is not new to Castlevania runs, but what is new is the creative use of switching between the main characters for basic character movement. We dare you to not have "Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto!" stuck in your head after watching the run.
Be sure to read the submission text for explanations on the glitches used and the route choices.
In order to ensure that the weapon choice and route is optimal, the author created an alternate fully optimized test run with a new route. The run enters the final boss sooner with a weaker weapon, but spends more time fighting- so much so that 2/3ths of the movie is spent fighting Dracula! Despite using a newer version of the emulator to remove the lag issues of the published movie, the final time still comes to 47 seconds slower. The movie is different enough in execution to warrant a mention; see the canceled run.

This run saves 05:21.21 over the previous run (more than half its length!). First of all, the run uses a previously proposed alternate route. This route would be longer, except that there is also a glitch used which allows attacks to hit more often than they should, and this glitch makes the new route viable. Lastly, there are also faster movement methods used. As a result, you will (un)fortunately hear a lot less of Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto! in this version.

This run by zk547 uses Eri through all 7 missions without dying. Eri is chosen because of her ability to aim grenades in 8 different directions and receive twice the number of grenades from the bomb/grenade item. The extra grenades become useful throughout the run and make her a lot faster than the other characters, especially in the final mission. Despite not dying at all, this run still manages to beat the previous run in this category by 00:10.11 seconds as well as the Marco run by almost two minutes.

The Mysterious Murasame Castle, also known as its original Japanese release title Nazo no Murasamejou, is a Famicom Disk System game developed by Nintendo EAD and published in 1986, only two months after The Legend of Zelda which it bears some similarities to. The story takes place in Edo period Japan. The titular Murasame Castle is taken over by a mysterious alien creature, who extends its power to four other neighboring castles. The daimyō lords of each castle are each given an evil sphere of power, and they use this power to summon armies of ninja and monsters to terrorize the nearby villages. Shōgun Tokugawa Ietsuna sends out samurai apprentice Takamaru to investigate the castles, defeat each castle lord along the way, and stop the aliens.
Noxxa defeats said alien creature and restores peace to the region in record time.

After Burst for Game Boy was released Japan-exclusively by NCS in 1990. Conceptually just a simple 2D shooter it features three modes (normal, 1P VS, 2P VS) of which this run plays the 1P VS mode. To reach this mode's ending, 15 (instead of 30 in normal mode) single-screen stages have to be cleared (all of which are different from the ones in normal mode).
The game features a ballistic bullet mechanic where you can charge each shot to have a higher exit velocity. Since only one player bullet can be visible at a time, the damage that can be done in any given timespan is severely limited, necessitating hitting multiple targets in one shot for best efficiency.
Quite strikingly, this game is plagued by extreme lag, slowing in-game time down significantly and contributing to about 80% runtime of the entire movie (about 4 lag frames per normal frame).

Battletoads is a classic video game by Rare for the NES, but different versions of the game were also made for many other systems, such as the Genesis and the Game Boy. All of these games are known for their comical animation style (such as gigantic fists and boots when the toads attack) and their high difficulty, essentially requiring the player to memorize the upcoming dangers to react fast enough to survive.
In this version, the player plays as the Battletoad Zitz on a quest to rescue the other two Toads, Rash and Pimple, from the Dark Queen. This game has only 9 stages, as opposed to 12 in the NES version. However, unlike the NES version of the game, there are no warps, and there is no two-player option. There are also fewer time-saving glitches. That doesn't stop Cardboard, though, from beating up tons of enemies and completing the game very quickly.
For more Battletoads madness, you can also see our movies of the NES version.

Catrap is a platform/puzzle game where a boy and girl work through a series of 100 puzzles. This breaks a curse and returns them to human form. Completing each level involves climbing ladders and moving blocks so that each enemy can be defeated. A rewind function is present for trail+error attempts to get to the solutions. But that feature isn't needed here.
This run makes clever use of the switch mechanics. Switch can't be used immediately after defeating an enemy, so other actions are performed while the enemy falls off the screen. Attacking from the ladder is slightly faster, the author uses this and other similar tricks to help save time.

It is several years after the death of Dr. Von Frankenbone, and things around the castle are starting to fall apart. Dr. Franken II is a side-scrolling platformer that places you in control of Franky as he searches far and wide for the pieces of the golden tablet, including exotic locales like Egypt and the bottom of the ocean. Gameplay is quite similar to a Zelda game, however there is level building.

Rolan's Curse is like a simplified version of the NES Legend of Zelda with slower gameplay and more restricted game world, resulting in a primitive hack-and-slash experience. Nevertheless, there exists an interesting storyline: The kingdom of Rolan has been invaded by the forces of some evil being called Barius. However, in this movie the final boss is never actually seen. Instead of meeting Barius face to face, the hero dies while defeating the first level boss. The game then decides to freak out and end right there, declaring the rest of the story unnecessary.

Aside from Tetris, Super Mario Land is probably the most well-known cartridge for the original Gameboy. It features a marked departure from traditional Mario enemies and themes, including Sphinxes, seahorses, fists emerging from pipes, Egyptian-themed levels, Chinese-themed levels and UFO-themed levels.
The movie this obsoletes was the first published Gameboy movie on this site. Remarkably, 4 years later, this improves it by only 74 frames, which is less than 2 seconds. Wario, having been kicked out of Mario's castle in his first appearance, decides, in his eternal greed, to search for a statue stolen by the nefarious Captain Syrup and the Black Sugar Gang. Along the way this would normally involve the occasional side quest for hidden treasures and collecting as many coins as he can possibly amass.

This time it's played on Normal difficulty level, unlike the previous version by pirate_sephiroth. There are several reasons for this choice — you might want to read the discussion thread for this game for more details. Considering the inability to skip in-game dialogues (which is only possible on Hard mode), the route was also changed accordingly.
Like in the previous movie, you may notice the author stopping for a brief moment before making the final blow to some enemies. This is due to luck manipulation, which is one of the main speed factors for all speedruns of this game.

This is a 56 second improvement over the author's previous movie.
However, if you still think there is not enough zipping through walls, make sure to see the second quest completed in less than half a minute!
Selected quotes from JXQ:
Come follow on the adventure through a castle that contains no less than eighty clashing colors in each room! Be amazed as Juste Belmont, Simon's grandson, has to do the usual vampire hunting despite looking nothing like his grandfather (or a man at all). Question his motives when he takes time out of his rescue mission to decorate the basement he will soon destroy! Feel the pain as Juste struggles to understand that there actually are two castles!! (Ouch my brain!)

The first quest completion time of this fast paced game got nearly cut as much as 2/3 thanks to Juste's ability to sink into walls when going at very high speed. Please, don't try this at home!
This is a 171-second improvement over zggzdydp's movie. Like in the previous movies, the author picked up an item to display those cool CRITICAL's for entertainment, at the cost of some time.
However, if you still think there is not enough zipping through walls, make sure to see the second quest completed in less than half a minute!

In this game, the player controls Juste Belmont, one of the later descendants of the Belmont clan. The goal of the game, as usual for Castlevania games, is to defeat Dracula in his castle. Along the way, some bosses are beaten, and some abilities and items are obtained. Furthermore, to obtain the best ending, Juste is supposed to acquire all of Dracula's remains and Maxim's bracelet.
This run collects all of the pieces of furniture, which causes a certain room in the castle to become heavily decorated. This run uses wall-sinking glitches to warp very quickly between different parts of the castle, but it still explores a large portion of the castle. For another run featuring Juste which uses wall-sinking and ignores the castle decorations, please see this run.
We also have movies featuring the unlockable character Maxim, with wall-sinking or without.

In Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, the Belmont clan must again rise to the challenge: Dracula's castle is in disarray and is in serious need of an interior decorator! In this movie, Juste Belmont zips through walls, under floors, and over zombies with the very important task of rearranging furniture. (He also defeats Dracula and rescues his best friends along the way, but that's not very important.)
This movie is a 04:14.97 improvement over its predecessor, with route changes and more efficient kills speeding it up.
