Otocky was created by Toshio Iwai in 1987 and was only released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System. It is best described as a musical side-scrolling shoot 'em up where the primary weapon is a ball which, when fired in one of eight directions, plays different musical notes on the primary instrument quantized to the beat of the background music.
Needless to say, when such a weapon is put into the hands of a tool-assisted speedrunner, you might just find yourself humming along to the end result.

This game is Super Mario Bros., the original, but on the Famicom Disk System. It is much similar to the ROM version of the game, except for one minor difference that is demonstrated here.
The -1 stage is completely different. In the NES and Unisystem versions, the -1 stage repeats infinitely and cannot be completed, but in FDS, it can be completed, and then come -2 and -3.
The -3 stage in FDS is a castle level, and completing it ends the game, even though it says "princess is in another castle". The princess is not seen in the ending, but she is sighted twice in the -1 stage, as shown in this movie.

The story takes place in Edo period Japan. The titular Murasame Castle is taken over by a mysterious alien creature, who extends its power to four other neighboring castles. The daimyō lords of each castle are each given an evil sphere of power, and they use this power to summon armies of ninja and monsters to terrorize the nearby villages. While the USA release plays just like real American football, the Japanese version, used in this run, has a completely different goal. This version is high score based; more like the arcade release. Score increases with progress down the field, touchdowns, kicked PATs, and remaining time on the clock when the touchdown is scored. Another major difference is no option to select difficulty at the beginning: the game moves through the 4 difficulties as its normal progression to the hardest level (Super Bowl).

The matters become even more complicated when the famous Billy The Shell also embarks on a quest to save Sheryl. Will Armadillo be able to rescue the girl and to defeat his enemies?
In this game, you move Armadillo around an area map composed of squares. Some of them are empty, while others represent locations. Once you enter a location, you find yourself on a platform level, that often contains several sub-levels. There are sometimes branching ways on the area map, and you are not obliged to access all the locations to clear an area. Super Spy Hunter (1992) was originally released in Japan under the name Battle Formula (バトルフォーミュラ). The game has "become" a sequel to Spy Hunter, the arcade classic from 1983, already after its initial release — when the developer purchased the license from Midway.
Since the main character drives a wheeled vehicle, this game shows to be the rare kind of a variable scrolling speed shooter, where you can slow the car down if you can't keep up with the action (which obviously never happens in a TAS). The core gameplay holds true to its spiritual predecessor, but this time it's spiced up with stage bosses and various sorts of powerups.
This movie is a 1 minute 14 second improvement over the previous one thanks to increased precision, lag reduction, and better boss fighting.

Battle Kid 2: Mountain of Torment is the sequel to Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril and was released in 2012. Inspired from I Wanna Be The Guy and other classic platformers, this game follows the same format of having a large map in Metroidvania style where one has a large map to freely explore and must venture to various parts of it. You always die in one hit (3 hits for easy difficulty), but there are unlimited lives and a password system that allows you to continue where you left off. In total, there are over 650 rooms, 25 enemy types, 13 boss battles, 42 music tracks, and more bonus features this time around.
This time around, Timmy ventures through a mountain base (hence the subtitle "Mountain of Torment") to thwart the villains' plans once more.

In order to make the game a bit easier, its creators embedded some secret warp zones to skip a few early levels in their entirety. But that simply wasn't good enough for MESHUGGAH, feos & Koh1fds; they decided to travel directly to level 3, where they invent their own warp and skip right to the grand finale. They took a glitch found in this TAS and exploited it even further, to the point where the Dark Queen just gives up and returns Angelica and Pimple, going off to hatch an even more evil plan for next time. The glitch is done by breaking the game execution and sending it right to the game ending.

Bible Buffet: a turn-based board game with action stages and bible quizzes. In it, you spin a spinner and move the number of spaces it says.
When you land on your spot, if it is just a regular spot, you play an action game for points, weapons, hearts, etc. If it has a red circle, you spin again. If the space you land on has a red circle connected to another red circle by dashes, you move forward or backwards to the second circle. If the space has a red circle with a question mark in it, you take a pop quiz of three trivia questions then get to select either a key, a heart or move ahead one, two, three or four spaces.
When you spin, if you get the book instead of a number, you get a pop quiz of three questions. If you get the happy face, something good happens like move ahead ten spaces, get a key, get a heart, etc. If you get the sad face, something bad happens like lose your turn, move back 1 space and lose your turn, and so on.

Bio Hazard is an unlicensed demake of Resident Evil for the NES by Waixing. Its Mandarin name is 生化危机 Bio Hazard, where "生化危机" means "Resident Evil." The game's physics and aesthetics are based off of the GB game Resident Evil Gaiden.
Like the 3D game it is based on, this game requires the player to navigate a zombie-infested mansion while managing inventory space, ammunition, and puzzle items. Unlike the original Resident Evil however, shooting zombies is accomplished via a mini-game where a moving reticle must be stopped when in range of a target. Also unlike the original game, ammunition does not stack, and items are not droppable.

A rare instance of a Japanese-made NES game based on a U.S.-originated comic book, Bucky O'Hare (1992) provides a player with a good combination of platforming action similar to Mega Man, an interesting plot, and convincing production values. You can play as one of the five unique characters, which you are free to select at any time, after saving them from the clutches of the Toad Empire. Each character has special abilities required to take advantage of in order to pass through the game's numerous variably designed stages, ranging from single-screen puzzle rooms to autoscrolling shoot-'em-ups.
Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement unconventional ways of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or an otherwise harmful collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to playing it in pre-emulation era, without ever finding out Konami's little sabotage.
This movie by AnS is set up in a fashion that imitates this handicap by playing the game in hard mode (accessing it through a password), where every hit results in death. Other than that, it also improves the previous movie by 2 minutes 48.7 seconds, using several major glitches and a lot of small tricks explained in great detail in the author's comments.

With Simon sneaking by most enemies with no subweapons and only his leather whip, this ends up being quite a stealthy run.

This is the first movie to abuse the fact that some games do not initialize their states before reading them, which in this case results in one of the cart registers randomly taking a certain value that can force the game to start from level 5 on power-on.

Clash at Demonhead is a complex game to say the least. There are over 40 levels in the game, and they are all connected to each other. In the network of levels, the player must control Billy "Big Bang" Blitz to find 6 medallions and then rescue the kidnapped professor. This is no simple task. To make things even harder for a (tool-assisted) speedrunner, there are items available that greatly increase the player's speed, but in return cost money. This means that the route and strategy must be carefully planned.
This movie certainly does not lack speed or complexity, and is especially entertaining if you have played the game and know how hard it is. In this run, Randil improves the previous movie by over 4 minutes primarily thanks to a new trick that allows you to use the Power Boots for twice as long. This game is a mix between a shooter and a platformer: the player walks through the caves, jumps over obstacles and shoots everything in sight. Crystalis is an awesome action rpg by SNK. What little plot there is involves the world ending on October 1, 1997. Naturally, after that the world became full of mutants and monsters. Technology regresses and people can use magic. There is an evil empire trying to revive the ancient technology, specifically the obligatory tower floating in the sky. The hero pops out of some sort of stasis chamber and proceeds to topple the empire and take down the tower with the help of some wise men and a friendly dolphin. There's a heroine named Mesia, but she only shows up a few times, most of which are skipped in this run.
This beats the previous run by almost 12 minutes. As with that run, the second-controller cheats are off-limits (the fm2 only has data for controller 1). Other than that, no holds are barred. Many new glitches are used. For a complete list, see the game resources page. Movement is faster by abusing the no-subpixel engine. Much effort went into lag reduction, especially in certain areas. However, the vast majority of the time savings is due to better experience management.

We recommend watching the movie on an emulator and using the author's LUA script. There's quite a bit of useful information.

For a "pacifist" type of completion, this run avoids killing enemies (they might also have dropped health refills, so health management is mandatory), and to offer maximum variety in addition to the any% version, doesn't use the subweapons (yet to save a single enemy's life, a single arrow is used). Dragon Fighter is a cross-over between a platformer and a shooter. It starts out in platform mode, where you can collect dragon points. When you have enough, you can transform into a powerful dragon, turning the game into a autoscrolling shooter. The game scrolls slowly in this mode, but the dragon moves fast.
By continuously switching between the two modes, it allows the player to go as fast as possible, which makes an otherwise boring game interesting.

Dragon Warrior is a seemingly complex but ultimately fairly simple NES RPG. The character completes his quest at Level 7.
In this eighth published movie of the game, RationalMonkey saves 00:13.39 seconds over the previous run, mostly by using wings in Rimuldar rather than a deathwarp. See the author's comments for details. There are several things about this movie that might seem odd if one is not aware of them beforehand:
  • All unnecessary random encounters have been manipulated into not happening.
  • The player dies several times in order to get transported back to the beginning.
  • Action commands are often delayed intentionally in order to manipulate critical hits and such.

Dragon Warrior is an epic RPG series which now spans 11 games across many systems. The second game greatly expands on the first to include a party of three heroes (all descendents of Erdrick and the hero of DW1) and battles that may include many enemies.
The world is much bigger and there are many big dungeons to explore as well. Luckily there are new abilities and items to make this easier. Enemies can randomly drop items when defeated and there is a lottery which is the precursor to the casinos which appear in each later DW game.

This is a non-glitched run of Dragon Warrior 3, now under 2 hours long.
This game is known in the TAS world as being a pain to play due to the RNG (random number generator) being much harder to manipulate than most other games. As a result, seemingly random actions throughout the game are actually intentional manipulation of the RNG to ensure favourable outcomes, such as avoiding monsters or good battle outcomes.
To give you an idea of how surprising this time is to most players, the previous run is about 24 minutes longer than this one. Even before that, any run that was under 3 hours long was deemed to be very difficult to perform.

The last in the original Dragon Warrior storyline, this one follows "the Hero", who is tasked with saving the world from the archfiend Baramos. After cobbling together a group of people to take with him, the Hero must travel the world to find a way to Baramos's lair.
Or at least, that was what was supposed to happen. Thanks to a glitch involving a party of dead characters, vaxherd manages to manipulate his inventory and warp list to not only have extremely rare pieces of equipment from nothing, but also warps directly to where Baramos is located in a fraction of the time it would take normally.
In addition to this, vaxherd also uses a glitch involving resets and character names to manipulate the RNG and encounter formula at certain points, thereby beating the previous run by over seven minutes.

Dragon's Lair is much better known in its incarnations for other platforms as an FMV game with only slight amounts of control over the player's action. The NES version is more of a traditional platformer, but very smooth animation for the era and funny-looking characters inspired by the cartoon graphics of the other versions - this includes the final boss, who isn't seen very much in this run thanks to abuse of the game mechanics.

After hearing about how the dark overlord Darces has returned, our hero goes on a quest to unite all five one elements in order to defeat Darces and save the kingdom.
In this storybook-view RPG, the author zooms around the game world, entering the most dangerous of dungeons, killing two powerful monsters, and collecting the bare minimum needed to beat the game in incredible fashion. Despite the player being unable to survive one hit, the author subverts certain death with the handy pause system. Despite the player supposedly being unable to damage the monsters, an underflow glitch allows for massive damage. Despite the final boss standing right there to kill him, the viewer sees all of 3 frames of the dark overlord. It's an RPG done in just over one minute, without warping or save glitching.

EarthBound Beginnings is the first game in the Mother/EarthBound series, known simply as Mother in Japan. It was localized for a 1990 US release, but wasn't released outside Japan until 2015. During that time, the original localized title, "EarthBound", was used for the English release of Mother 2.
Long referred to as "EarthBound Zero" by fans, the game was finally given an official title for its Wii U eShop release.

In Fisher-Price: Firehouse Rescue, the player controls a fireman driving a firetruck. Both the fireman and the firetruck bear the familiar style of the popular Fisher-Price toy line. The object of the game is to rescue pets from trees and people from houses in the immediate neighborhood. There are 2 parts to this task: the first part involves navigating the maze-like streets from an overhead perspective in order to find the troubled residence. Once the house is reached, the second part of the job is to maneuver the firetruck's ladder underneath the person or animal in need of rescue, from a side perspective, and letting them down to safety.

Gotcha! The Sport! is a video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was released in 1987 based on the 1985 film Gotcha!. It is a Capture the Flag-style game played with paintball guns loaded with simulated paintballs.
The player's mission is to get through the level, capture the enemy flag by shooting it, and return it to your base. This is while simultaneously trying not to get shot by the other team, run out of ammo, or run out of time. A light gun is necessary for this game, but one needs to also use the controller. The directional pad will move the screen left and right. Ammo boxes can be found sitting on the ground or carried by enemies in the background. It seems that only misses cost you ammo, so if one's aim is precise, they will receive a significant bonus for leftover ammunition.
There are three levels in the game: Woods, Warehouse District and Snow Fields. The Woods and Snow Fields levels feature enemies in military garb, while the Warehouse District features enemies modeled after early 1980s punks. These rounds repeat in this order infinitely; each time around, the reaction time needed for the enemies to aim and fire is reduced.
In this run, adelikat uses his amazing uber-Aimbot skills to decimate anyone and everyone who stands in his way to capture the flag. This movie is a demonstration of NES Zapper support in the most recent versions of BizHawk, and is the first movie to use the new bk2 file format for BizHawk.

In this run, adelikat picks up maximum speed upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes, much like the previous movie. That is certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player cannot affect the speed. However, the point of this movie is not just to beat this game as fast as possible, but rather to do all kinds of unpredictable and awe-inspiring things rarely seen in any TAS — without losing time. See for yourself.
This is probably one of the best illustrations on how to create art out of a simplistic and otherwise uninteresting game to watch.
What is also different about this movie is an extra warp which significantly shortens the game, and the use of a new tool (input macro) as described in the submission text. Bots are occasionally used to generate pseudorandom input while still avoiding death.

High Speed was released on the NES by Rare Inc. in 1991 and is based on a real pinball machine released by Williams pinball in 1985. The core rules of High Speed were ported over fairly faithfully from the original pinball machine although Rare added in two different minigames and a "wizard mode" goal which is reached by completing a total of 8 cannon minigames and 6 race minigames.
Completing all three races and all four cannon minigames causes a spaceship to appear which displays a message that states "you have beaten the system... for now”; beating another round of three races and four cannon minigames causes a rocket to appear which states “you have beaten the system this time.” and marks the end of the game. Reaching this final “you beat the system” bonus is the goal of this speedrun.

Hydlide is an old and somewhat notorious game, mostly because it has very strange gameplay mechanics. For the first part of the game, walking consumes health, and the character must stop every now and then to regain it.
This is one of the few games (the only one?) where the level grinding sequences are actually entertaining, while the boss fights aren't. Hitting a boss decreases your own health as well as the boss's, after which there is much waiting for more health until you can hit him again.
