Battle Chess is a chess game for the NES with a few neat gimmicks. In addition to standard 2D depictions of chess pieces you get to play with, you also have "3D" pieces that walk and interact with other pieces like they're real people. You also have animations for when pieces overtake and destroy other pieces. There are also features to aid in gameplay such as letting the game suggest moves to you if you're stuck and being able to take back moves and play again.

In Battle City, your goal is to destroy enemy tanks while trying to keep them away from your base. Each level includes 20 enemies as well as some obstacles, like the weak red bricks, armored silver bricks, water and ice, which you can use to your advantage. The basic tank you start with can also be powered up little by little throughout the game.
In this run, NhatNM rolls through the game speedily while losing a little bit of time to entertain with amusing shooting patterns and making the scenery into recognizable letters and shapes.

Super Spy Hunter (1992) was originally released in Japan under the name Battle Formula (バトルフォーミュラ). The game has "become" a sequel to Spy Hunter, the arcade classic from 1983, already after its initial release — when the developer purchased the license from Midway.
Since the main character drives a wheeled vehicle, this game shows to be the rare kind of a variable scrolling speed shooter, where you can slow the car down if you can't keep up with the action (which obviously never happens in a TAS). The core gameplay holds true to its spiritual predecessor, but this time it's spiced up with stage bosses and various sorts of powerups.
This movie is a 1 minute 14 second improvement over the previous one thanks to increased precision, lag reduction, and better boss fighting.

Battle Kid 2: Mountain of Torment is the sequel to Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril and was released in 2012. Inspired from I Wanna Be The Guy and other classic platformers, this game follows the same format of having a large map in Metroidvania style where one has a large map to freely explore and must venture to various parts of it. You always die in one hit (3 hits for easy difficulty), but there are unlimited lives and a password system that allows you to continue where you left off. In total, there are over 650 rooms, 25 enemy types, 13 boss battles, 42 music tracks, and more bonus features this time around.
This time around, Timmy ventures through a mountain base (hence the subtitle "Mountain of Torment") to thwart the villains' plans once more.
This is an improvement of 29.60 seconds compared to the predecessor movie.

Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril may look old, but it's actually released in 2010! Mainly inspired by the PC game I Wanna Be the Guy, this game is classic platforming action, where anything can kill the player in one single hit. While it's not unfair (as opposed to I Wanna Be the Guy), it's still really hard.
Aglar collects every item and key before going to the last area, and takes the right path to get to the best ending, all of this on the hardest difficulty possible and without taking any damage!

Battleship is an NES adaptation of the board game of the same name. As with the board game, your goal is to sink your opponent's battleships by correctly guessing the locations of where they are and launching attacks at those locations. You don't know where your opponent's ships are from the start and neither does your opponent for your ships, but with proper guesswork, you can tell where they are soon enough. The NES version adds additional features such as special weapons that can hit more than once per turn.

In order to make the game a bit easier, its creators embedded some secret warp zones to skip a few early levels in their entirety. But that simply wasn't good enough for MESHUGGAH, feos & Koh1fds; they decided to travel directly to level 3, where they invent their own warp and skip right to the grand finale. They took a glitch found in this TAS and exploited it even further, to the point where the Dark Queen just gives up and returns Angelica and Pimple, going off to hatch an even more evil plan for next time. The glitch is done by breaking the game execution and sending it right to the game ending.
This run conquers the predecessor movie by 00:00.85 seconds by using a more accurate core and a newly discovered void jump trick.

Bible Buffet: a turn-based board game with action stages and bible quizzes. In it, you spin a spinner and move the number of spaces it says.
When you land on your spot, if it is just a regular spot, you play an action game for points, weapons, hearts, etc. If it has a red circle, you spin again. If the space you land on has a red circle connected to another red circle by dashes, you move forward or backwards to the second circle. If the space has a red circle with a question mark in it, you take a pop quiz of three trivia questions then get to select either a key, a heart or move ahead one, two, three or four spaces.
When you spin, if you get the book instead of a number, you get a pop quiz of three questions. If you get the happy face, something good happens like move ahead ten spaces, get a key, get a heart, etc. If you get the sad face, something bad happens like lose your turn, move back 1 space and lose your turn, and so on.
Invariel and Spikestuff reach the end of the board in record time.

Bio Hazard is an unlicensed demake of Resident Evil for the NES by Waixing. Its Mandarin name is 生化危机 Bio Hazard, where "生化危机" means "Resident Evil." The game's physics and aesthetics are based off of the GB game Resident Evil Gaiden.
Like the 3D game it is based on, this game requires the player to navigate a zombie-infested mansion while managing inventory space, ammunition, and puzzle items. Unlike the original Resident Evil however, shooting zombies is accomplished via a mini-game where a moving reticle must be stopped when in range of a target. Also unlike the original game, ammunition does not stack, and items are not droppable.

Blaster Master is a fairly long game involving a random hero that jumps down a hole after his mutant frog, finds a tank, and proceeds to blow up a few bosses and rescue said frog. It's complicated.
In this movie the hero gets bored with the tank early on, skips the bosses and mostly decides to just go straight to the final boss and blow him up. The frog is saved and dissected, and Biology 101 is passed. Hooray!
This movie plays on the European version of the game, which includes a few bugs such as stopping movement by pausing and allowing double (and more) jumping. A changed zip mechanism is also in the European version which allows warping through things you really shouldn't be able to warp through.

A rare instance of a Japanese-made NES game based on a U.S.-originated comic book, Bucky O'Hare (1992) provides a player with a good combination of platforming action similar to Mega Man, an interesting plot, and convincing production values. You can play as one of the five unique characters, which you are free to select at any time, after saving them from the clutches of the Toad Empire. Each character has special abilities required to take advantage of in order to pass through the game's numerous variably designed stages, ranging from single-screen puzzle rooms to autoscrolling shoot-'em-ups.
Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement unconventional ways of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or an otherwise harmful collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to playing it in pre-emulation era, without ever finding out Konami's little sabotage.
This movie by AnS is set up in a fashion that imitates this handicap by playing the game in hard mode (accessing it through a password), where every hit results in death. Other than that, it also improves the previous movie by 2 minutes 48.7 seconds, using several major glitches and a lot of small tricks explained in great detail in the author's comments.

In this game, the hero—Duke Geraden—travels to Darklarza Castle in order to rescue Princess Amoreena from the Dragon Master. Simon is taking another shot at this castle, but feeling horrible for the destruction he caused last time, he is now trying to respect Dracula's property and leave the place untouched (even if his intention is to kill the count).
As a minimalist variation of a pacifist goal, this movie does not contain any destruction in the levels: candles and walls are left intact, items stay untouched, and no enemy is harmed — with the exception of the bosses, who are killed mercilessly with the help of the "critical hit" glitch.
With Simon sneaking by most enemies with no subweapons and only his leather whip, this ends up being quite a stealthy run.
eien86 & Challenger improve the previous run by 12.3 seconds, thanks to better optimization with the scroll glitch, a new route within the caves, better boss battles which allowed obtaining the orb early, and removal of lag frames.

If science fiction is to be believed, the ultimate evolution for biological beings is to discard the physical body and become an entity of pure energy. For video game characters, it seems to be the ability to zip through walls. In this latest TAS by zggzdydp, Simon Belmont joins the league of characters possessing this ability.
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest is the story of Simon's horrible weekend without sleep. Two years after defeating Dracula, the hero is physically weakened by Dracula's curse. He must gather Dracula's remains and incinerate them at the ruins of Castlevania in order to end the curse.
This movie is 85 seconds faster than the previous effort by the same author. We recommend to read his comments for explanations on how this improvement was achieved.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (originally known as 悪魔城伝説 or Akumajō Densetsu, meaning "Legend of the Demon Castle") is the story of Trevor Belmont's battle against Dracula from the times before Simon's battle in Castlevania. In this complex and difficult game, there are three playable allies whom Trevor can recruit: Alucard (Dracula's son), Grant DaNasty (a pirate captain), and Sypha Belnades (a mystic warlord).
This game has a technically high-quality soundtrack because it uses a VRC6 sound chip that works in the Japanese Famicom but not in the NES. Thus, the movie was made with the Japanese version of the game instead of the USA version.
This movie takes the path that recruits Grant. It is about 22 seconds faster than the previous version. Improvements come from more optimization, better heart management, and new tricks like manipulating moving platforms and entering walls. There is also a Sypha path movie and an Alucard path movie.

TASVideos has runs playing through the game with each of these characters.
Unlike those other runs, which are played on the Japanese Famicom version of the game for its superior soundtrack, this run uses the USA version. This is because the USA version has a hard-difficulty mode you can access by naming your character "AKAMA" at the start. In this difficulty, you cannot recruit any allies, and there are more enemies that generally do more damage. To make this even harder, Fortranm takes a route that visits the Sunken City as Stage 6, showing off a difficult stage that no other run of this game shows.

Celeste Mario’s Zap & Dash! is a ROM hack of Super Mario Bros., released in July 2023 as a precursor to the work-in-progress Mario Machina. Described by its main creator w7n as a “hastily done minihack”, it is the most technically impressive hack of this game by far, with heavy modifications to almost the entire game engine. The player progresses through a mostly linear world, using walljumps, Celeste-style dashes and various features in the level design to assist movement. The main collectables in the game are moons, which serve as a measure of completion as well as increasing the maximum number of dashes the player is able to store.

Cheetahmen II is the unfinished sequel to game #52 of Action 52. The game contains 6 of the 10 levels originally proposed, in which the player takes control of Apollo, Hercules, and Aries, switching off every two levels.
This is the first movie to abuse the fact that some games do not initialize their states before reading them, which in this case results in one of the cart registers randomly taking a certain value that can force the game to start from level 5 on power-on.
Since the game really behaves like that on the console, it was decided to allow presetting such truly random bits on the emulator side. Read the submission text and its discussion thread for more details.
We also have an "all levels" TAS for this game, done on the patched ROM due to a bug in the original game preventing the player from progressing past level 4.

This game is a mix between a shooter and a platformer: the player walks through the caves, jumps over obstacles and shoots everything in sight. Well, at least if he has a weapon: at the beginning he is unarmed and can only kick or punch. He has to find pyramids which were dropped by his dead colleagues (also sometimes from killed aliens), which grant an armor piece, more life energy and a weapon. Crystalis is an awesome action RPG by SNK. What little plot there is involves the world ending on October 1, 1997. Naturally, after that the world became full of mutants and monsters. Technology regresses and people can use magic. There is an evil empire trying to revive the ancient technology, specifically the obligatory tower floating in the sky. The hero pops out of some sort of stasis chamber and proceeds to topple the empire and take down the tower with the help of some wise men and a friendly dolphin. There's a heroine named Mesia, but she only shows up a few times, most of which are skipped in this run.
This beats the previous run by almost 12 minutes. As with that run, the second-controller cheats are off-limits (the fm2 only has data for controller 1). Other than that, no holds are barred. Many new glitches are used. For a complete list, see the Game Resources page. Movement is faster by abusing the no-subpixel engine. Much effort went into lag reduction, especially in certain areas. However, the vast majority of the time savings is due to better experience management.

We recommend watching the movie on an emulator and using the author's LUA script. There's quite a bit of useful information.

Mahtari's task is to take resources from 15 different hostile planets and also defeat the enemies who inhabit them.
Unlike the other games of the saga, released on various Japanese home computers, this game was released on the Famicom. It also plays more like a shoot-em-up rather than a strategy game like the other games of the saga, except you don't float at all, since the main character is affected by the gravity of the planets he visits.
Newcomer genzie achieves the best ending in record time.

Darkman is a game loosely based on the movie of the same name. In this side-scrolling platformer, the player controls Darkman, a superhero who can jump, kick and punch, as well as swing from a rope during action sequences between levels. In each level, Darkman disguises himself as the boss of the level, whom he must defeat before the time limit runs out.
Denial140 improves on the previous run by 23 seconds thanks to better understanding of how the game spawns and handles the objects Darkman can interact with, leading to lots of optimizations. For more details, you can read the author's notes.

The city of St. Canard is plagued by an unseen crime wave. The intelligence agency S.H.U.S.H. suspects that the shady organization F.O.W.L. and their valued operative Steelbeak are its causes. The caped superhero Darkwing has made quite some enemies in the criminal circles thanks to his past heroic deeds, and now the entire city has to pay for that. Naturally, the valiant duck is determined to travel through the dangerous streets of St. Canard, defeat his foes, and foil Steelbeak's plans.
Darkwing Duck is a side-scrolling platform game featuring the titular character from the Disney television series. The gameplay is similar to Duck Tales, also resembling Mega Man games in many ways. Darkwing's default weapon is a gas gun; special adapters that modify its functions can be collected during exploration. By using his cape, Darkwing is able to deflect some of the enemy projectiles. Weapons can be changed via a sub-screen.
For a "pacifist" type of completion, this run avoids killing enemies (they might also have dropped health refills, so health management is mandatory), and to offer maximum variety in addition to the any% version, minimizes the use of subweapons (yet to save a single enemy's life, a single arrow is used). It offers some fresh action and manipulation on bosses, but can't be done entirely along with pacifist, so DreamYao has to use a single arrow to save a single enemy's life.
This is a 827 frame improvement over the previous movie.

Darkwing Duck (1992) is a platformer somewhat similar to Mega Man in gameplay and difficulty. The arrow gun allows the player to climb up walls and use creative shortcuts so that the absolute shortest route can be taken. In case you are wondering why the character keeps on jumping so much, it is because he has to wait a short amount of time before being able to walk. With constant jumping these stops can be avoided.
This run by DreamYao, J.Y, and aiqiyou saves 16.39 seconds over the previous run thanks to improved jumping and arrow techniques. For more details, you can read the authors' comments.

Deadly Towers is an infamous 'Nintendo Hard' game, where you control Prince Myer in his quest to destroy seven bells guarded by seven bosses and stop the evil wizard Rubas. The character is slow and takes a lot of damage very easily, making the game usually a great challenge. While there are powerups which boost your abilities, they are generally found in secret passages with no indication of their location.
In this run by ars4326, the Japanese version Mashou (魔鐘) is used due to it containing an inventory glitch that, essentially, gives you unlimited bells after death-warping and defeating Cold Killer twice. New routes, sequence breaking, and movement optimizations are also involved in this updated run.
