G-LOC: Air Battle is a combat flight simulator game for the arcades and various Sega home consoles. It is a spinoff of Sega's After Burner and utilizes a special motion simulator for some of its arcade cabinets to simulate being in a fighter jet. Unlike After Burner, the game is mostly played in a first-person view, only changing to a third-person view for the player to perform evasive maneuvers (the Sega Master System port version does not have this feature). As with After Burner, you control an experimental fighter jet and destroy various other jets, ships, and enemy bases, eventually culminating in a dogfight with a fighter jet that's just as powerful as yours.

ActRaiser (1990) is a critically acclaimed SNES game which combines two major gameplay phases: a god simulator and an action platformer. You play the role of God "the Master", who awakens from his slumber only to find that the human civilization is completely wrecked, and hordes of demons are roaming free.
This run plays through the "Special Mode," which is a mode where the god simulators are removed and the levels become harder. The Japanese version is used for even higher difficulty.

Alcahest (アルカエスト) is an Action JRPG developed by HAL Laboratory that was released only in Japan. The story is standard fantasy fare where our hero Alen goes on a journey to stop the evil emperor Babilom and the demon god Alcahest from conquering the world. As with many other action RPGs made at the time, it has standard experience point and companion systems and is played from a top-down perspective. Certain characters can join your party as you progress, and you can collect items to help boost your stats.
In this run, jafem saves the world from Alcahest in record time, utilizing various broken attack combinations to quickly beat enemies and a "zombie" glitch to skip a number of dialogue boxes. For details on what was done in the run and the mechanics of the game, you can read the author's notes.

One of the best (and best known) shooters of the 16-bit era, Contra III: The Alien Wars forgoes any semblance of plot devices in favor of good old fashioned shooting and platforming with some tough as nails bosses, especially in this, the hardest mode.
Apparently not happy with an already amazing movie, Cpadolf felt the need to go on yet another black op, optimizing his distortions of space and time on the way to a 173 frame improvement.
This movie uses a 'warping' glitch to complete the game. There is also the 2-player version, which does not.

Note: There is also a lossless encode available in the discussion thread.

Trying to strike a compromise with peace activists, the guy who destroys the world bare-chested has been ordered to stop an alien invasion while taking as few lives as possible. As such, this run completes Contra III: The Alien Wars while only destroying enemies and obstacles if they prevent advancement. This requires much more careful dodging than the other run that avoids the warp glitch does.
Our hero takes the dodging one step further by adding the limitation that he cannot shoot enemy projectiles. However, frustrated by the lack of carnage and by the political pressure, our hero lets off steam sometimes by shooting the scenery and doing entertaining dances and poses.
This run improves the previous publication by 00:25.41 seconds.

The guy who has infinite supply of ammo and destroys worlds bare-chested is back again! And this time he has a shirt and a friend with him.

Donkey Kong's been kidnapped and old Cranky Kong insists that Diddy collect a bunch of coins that say "DK" on them. These goals are compatible enough that Diddy and Dixie decide to get a little bit sidetracked on their rescue plan.

As you might know, Konami realised they went a little overboard with the difficulty of the arcade version of Gradius III, so the SNES port got noticeably easier (and laggier). However, it still remains one of the hardest and most unforgiving shoot 'em ups released in its era.
This is Cpadolf's take at the shmupping carnage, resulting in a significant improvement in both speed and style over the previous movie by Krocketneo. In total, 2 minutes 53 seconds are saved thanks to lag reduction and faster boss fights. The author also kills a greater percentage of enemies (still not fully 100%, though — read the comments for more details).
The game is completed in Arcade mode (still a far cry from the actual arcade game), which is accessed by tapping A on the main menu screen. It is strongly recommended to read the congratulatory text appearing after the end credits. ;)

Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (1996) was among the later games released on SNES, which had its positive impact on production values. As a result, the game sports remarkable design and animation quality.

Super R•Type (1991) is the 4th game of the classic R•Type series of arcade shooters, whose distinct gameplay and level design inspired numerous developers to create clones and various look-alikes. However, this particular installment isn't considered canon—it is an SNES-exclusive mash-up of the first two R•Type games.
In a nutshell, the series' plot is about the evil Bydo empire, which is a highly developed alien lifeform with hivemind mentality—akin to the Borg or the Zerg. The player pilots a spacecraft on a mission to destroy the Bydo. The craft's most prominent weapon is the so-called force—a spherical pod which is, in fact, a living piece of Bydo flesh and an indestructible mineral at the same time! Conveniently, the pod can be attached to the player's craft to shield it from bullets, or launched at enemies to inflict large amounts of damage.
All R•Type games are known to be very unforgiving; they require the player to learn strict paths that revolve memorizing safe paths through stages and tactically using the force pod to quickly dispatch of enemies and protect the ship. The author of this TAS, however, throws all the strictness and tacticalness out the window to play around and just ram most of the enemies with the pod. (Try this in realtime if you want to know true frustration.)
Other than that, the movie uses a password to access the second loop's difficulty level (eloquently called "PRO") without having to beat the game twice. It still doesn't get the good ending, though.

Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt is an extremely fast paced game, which makes it difficult. It is made even more difficult by playing on the hardest setting, which gives Pugsley only one single heart, meaning that he dies in one hit. The movie itself looks very impressive and it really gives the impression that the player knows what he is doing.
This is an improvement of 00:47.58 seconds over the previous movie.

The Combatribes is a side-scrolling fighter without much side-scrolling, but all the more fighting. Mostly jumping on poor defenseless bad guys and repeatedly polishing the sidewalk with their faces.
Alyosha and Dooty here obsolete the longest non-obsoleted movie (at the time of publication) by over two and a half minutes. Many optimizations were achieved with improved modern tools and careful testing of enemy movement patterns. For more information, see the authors' comments.
The movie this one beats is somewhat legendary due to the fact that it was a result of power abuse: it was submitted, accepted and published by the same person within a couple of minutes. That run took 12 years to get beaten due to the nature of the game and common absence of interest; probably if it was judged properly in the first place, it would've had no chance to get published at all.

Based loosely on the plot of the movie of the same name, this game is about a man named Stanley Ipkiss, who finds a powerful mask known as The Mask. However, the evil Dorian Tyrell has also become aware of this and kidnaps his girlfriend in order to obtain it.
One of the traits The Mask seems to give Stanley is extreme speed, so naturally, aside from a couple of boss fights, the gameplay is extremely fast throughout the movie. The Mask also has a variety of special powers, most of which are seen in this run. These powers cost M points to use, which have to be managed carefully over the stage.

Top Gear 2 is the sequel to SNES racing game Top Gear and was released for the Super Nintendo, the Sega Genesis, and Amiga computers. One of the main differences from its predecessor is its aim for a more realistic simulation. The game keeps track on what parts of the car are damaged and how it will affect the car, a fuel gauge is added, and the handling is harder and less arcade-like. Other differences include an upgrade system where you can spend money earned from winning races and racetrack pickups that can either give you extra money or nitro boosts.
In this run, Technickle improves on the previous run by almost four minutes. This is achieved through the usage of new tricks and glitches, including an out-of-bounds collision glitch that can let you instantly win the race. For more details, you can read the author's notes.

Trials of Mana is a RPG about your typical ragtag group of young adventurers that totally lack any survival instinct; at least that'd explain why they never bother to get any protective gear. Our three chosen champions of goodness are tasked with rescuing the eight elemental spirits from the clutches of evil and using their power to save the world. Though it turns out that nobody is able to count as we find in fact nine spirits...
Long referred to as "Seiken Densetsu 3" by fans, the game was finally given an official title in June 2019.
We recommend reading the author's notes; they contain a lot of very good information.

Goldeneye: 007 for the Nintendo Wii is a full-scale re-imagining of the N64 game, and includes no assets from the original game. It takes the classic Goldeneye story and updates it to the standards of a modern first-person shooter. It also features Daniel Craig rather than Pierce Brosnan, who played James Bond in the film and the Nintendo 64 game. It has many modern features such as the ability to sprint and aim down sights.
The missions in this game are based on the ones from the classic Nintendo 64 version instead of the film. Some of the stages from the original game have been combined in this game (for example, Bunker on Wii is like Bunker+Silo on N64 and Cradle is like Control+Cradle on N64). But there are also some brand-new missions like Nightclub and Solar.
This TAS plays on the hardest difficulty, 007 Classic. Like the original N64 game, the harder difficulties have more objectives than the easier difficulties. This makes the route much more interesting because the goal isn't simply to sprint to the end of the mission. 007 Classic also removes regenerating health, so there is much more health management on this difficulty. Because a modern Call of Duty-style FPS game with no health regeneration would be unfair, the developers added body armor that is only available on 007 classic, which the TAS makes great use of.
Since this game has roughly 35 minutes of unskippable cutscenes, the author provided a condensed video with all the cutscenes and loading screens removed.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, released for the Wii in 2008. While its core mechanics are the same as its predecessors (where the genre’s traditional health bar is replaced with a percent counter, with the goal of knocking opponents off the stage instead of reducing their HP to zero), Brawl changed many aspects of the game from Super Smash Bros. Melee, resulting in the game generally being considered the "slowest" in the series as a result.
Brawl is the first game in the series to have a dedicated story mode, called "The Subspace Emissary", which is the main focus of this TAS. The Subspace Emissary is mostly composed of side-scrolling platforming levels with cutscenes and beat-’em-up sections called "Ambushes" - similar to games like Kirby Super Star - while also containing the traditional versus matches and bosses like its predecessors.
DyllonStej takes advantage of oversights in the game's damage mechanics, which allows for extreme travel speed without being KO'd, in order to literally fly through the game at record-setting speed. Pervasive luck-manipulation throughout the movie ensures that the author always gets the right item or sticker to go even faster. The author has improved on their previous submission by an impressive 6:21.61 minutes via numerous improvements to routing and luck manipulation, all of which are detailed in the voluminous submission notes.

The good Mecha Santa plans to spread happiness and cheer all over the world. Princess Pitch, previously a sidekick in the game Garden Gnome Carnage, sets out to put an end to those silly plans.
This time around, Princess Pitch decides to take on Mecha Santa and his army of robot elves on a difficulty harder than the hardest (Reallyjoel's Mom), since it's too easy otherwise. Reallyjoel's Mom is a secret joke difficulty meant to be impossible: it multiplies the spawn and attack rate of all enemies several times over and removes all powerups and ammo refills. Consequently, a player without tool assistance will maybe beat one room - if they're lucky.
This TAS gets through with liberal use of the piledriver move, as well as precise movement and shooting.

Castlevania: Spectral Interlude is a Castlevania fangame for the ZX Spectrum, developed by Rewind and released in 2015. It mostly pays homage to the classic Castlevania games of the NES era, particularly Simon's Quest, but also takes on elements from later "Metroidvania"-style titles in the series.
Plot-wise, the game is set in the early 1800s, a few decades after Symphony of the Night, with the plot aiming to explain the disappearance of Richter Belmont and the Belmont clan after said game. The protagonist of the game is Richter's son, Simon Belmont (named after his ancestor of classic Castlevania fame), who with the help of sorcerer Joseph aims to remove Dracula's evil influence on the world by collecting demonic altar pieces, summoning Dracula, and whipping him to death as usual. However, some things don't go exactly as planned...
Noxxa achieves 100% completion and defeats Dracula in record time. Said 100% completion consists of the following:
  • Collect all 28 Altar Pieces
  • Defeat all 7 bosses
  • Get all 6 boss items
  • Get all 9 Health upgrades (HP maxes at 48)
  • Get all 7 Heart upgrades (hearts max at 50)
  • Get all 8 Metallic Plates
  • Apply all 8 Metallic Plate upgrades to the whip
  • Get all 6 subweapons
  • Get all other town upgrades (warp shrine, 2 map enhancements)
  • Complete the map by filling in all map tiles (visit every room)
  • Get the "true" ending (trigger Death event)
This is the first ever ZX Spectrum publication on this site.
