1) Better documentation of tricks! This is the one where I need the resources of all of you, the TAS community the most. Late 2004, word of Moriomoto's SMB3 TAS brought me to TASVideos. However one of the main things that kept me coming back were the tricks pages (such as SMB). I had a thirst for more advanced concept & strategies for the games I was familiar with, and I was tired of the tired and worn out "100 lives" and "-1" tricks that you would see at places like GameFAQs. I was amazed at the amount of ideas TASVideos (NESVideos back then) had that I would never even considered. And they even had animated GIFs demonstrating these ideas!
What adelikat said here is very true. The Super Mario Bros tricks page is one of our most popular pages. We need to have many more of these. In order to help with this, today I added the ability to our YouTube module to play just a subsection of a full video. See http://tasvideos.org/BossFightingGuide.html to see videos that when played show only the exact segment in question. If you're an editor please submit as much as you can, and make good use of videos. See documentation here: http://tasvideos.org/TextFormattingRules/ListOfModules.html#Youtube If you want to make a very specific video and upload that to YouTube, you can do that too, you do not need to limit yourself to TASs we published.

WebNations: You are currently complying with the site rules. As long as you comply with the site rules then everything is fine. As a seperate discussion however is if a user has their own channel/group/whatever on a particular site and doesn't want competition for views of their content versus someone else's. That we can and probably should have a discussion over. However if it is of no difficulty, and we already have a link elsewhere on YouTube, and the author of the movie in question doesn't want his video on your page, it would be nice (but not required at this time) to comply with his wishes.

Not unless it's an old acronym when expanded is more or less gibberish to the common person, and it's easy to pronounce. But those are few and far between. Also, you probably need to have someone drag your carcass out back and blow your brains out with a shotgun.

Derakon: adelikat and I have been discussing setting up an automated encoding machine. There's some issues we need to work out though, such as getting the emulators to accept all the encoding params via command line, possibly even running in window less mode, uploading to somewhere, and somehow working out the ROM images available on the system.

I've been making some tweaks and improvements to the streaming movie features that many people here have come to love. On the movie pages, where you have an option to play a movie from Archive.org, DailyMotion, Google Video, Viddler, or YouTube, I now made it that once you click the button to play via a specific site, you no longer have to click on the video again to have it start, it will do so automatically. Other improvements coming soon. Like always, you may need to clear your browser's cache for this to take effect.

Tee Ey Ess. Those who pronounce it as taasse need to be dragged out back and shot. Do you pronounce it Yue Ess Ey or Yusah?

Good job, thanks. I didn't even think about Bionic Commando, but it's a good choice for a star.

Darkwing Duck (This one and Battle of Olympus were planned to switch stars at some point when they got them, as multiple were popular, and a bit of variety and a not too static star list are nice.) Battle of Olympus
This is good too.

Points of discussion: Lemmings (I'm planning on giving a puzzle TAS a star. I am not fully convinced Lemmings is the most action packed or entertaining for a first-time TAS viewer, or someone unfamiliar with the game. I am not the only one with this opinion, but there are some strong opinions otherwise, and the response in the submission thread was very positive. I'm currently tending towards giving Lemmings a star, or is there a different puzzle TAS preferred?
You already know my opinions on this, but I'll share for the other people here who haven't seen what I wrote on IRC. Lemmings is a very popular game. It's been ported to system after system, and it's still being ported to modern systems, as well as cell phones and PDAs. It's true not everyone would care for the game, and not everyone wants to sit through an hour TAS of it either. However, I think nearly all people coming to our site would be familiar with the game, and they'll know in advance whether they like Lemmings or not before deciding to watch it. They'll also see the length and decide if they have that kind of time willing to watch it. If they decide after knowing these two points up front to still watch it, I think there is a very high probability that the person watching it will be blown away by the movie. The movie time and again shows an army of lemmings arriving to a point just as the final brick is laid to complete a bridge, and in most levels, the exact amount of Lemmings required is saved. Also time and again, bombers are blown up at exactly the right instant. This in general shows off the excellent potential of TASing. Those knowing the puzzles will also be floored by the original solutions to many of the puzzles. The run also does many things people have never thought possible. Building nearly straight bridges, mining and bashing through the ceiling, and many other things to surprise and entertain the viewer. It also plays the Sunsoft levels which many are not familiar with, and would be interested to see. Now if we go back to the point that not everyone wants to see Lemmings, the same can be said of any starred movie. Right now Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is our highest rated starred movie, and I think the movie is incredibly boring, I can't even watch the entire run. I greatly dislike all Sonic games in general, and I doubt you could ever make a run which would interest me. The only exception being Sonic Advance 2, that run entertains me, but in general you can't impress me with a Sonic game. But I don't mind it having a star, because anyone who dislikes Sonic games will not watch it in any event, and those who do like it will probably be impressed. The same can be said of Super Metroid for example, I love it, but some people here thinks Metroid looks dumb and can't sit through it either. People aren't going to watch a starred movie because it has a star, they're going to watch it because the idea of watching the game in general is appealing to them, or a combination of the screenshot and text alongside it is appealing enough to make them want to watch it, when they see it on our recommended movie list. That being said, once these factors make someone want to watch a movie, then a starred movie should entertain them and surpass their expectations. Regarding boring points here and there, all long movies have boring points. I think Super Metroid is very boring till after coming off the elevator after acquiring the morph ball. I doubt anyone is entertained by the huge unskippable intro, and probably most people here are bored by Ceres station as it's basically the same thing every time, and nothing that impressive about it. All these movies have low points in them, but we really enjoy them because they're filled with many really high points, and we know the authors tried their best with what they had to work with. We don't expect anyone to make Samus's elevator time interesting, nor should we really expect to make an army of Lemmings walking the last stretch into an exit interesting either. But you already know not to have high expectations for that when deciding to watch a movie. All this being said, I think Lemmings is an excellent choice for a star.

Family Feud (Very popular, and got multiple 2009 awards. The soccer TAS is however already a 'funny TAS', and quite a few other TASes that got 2009 awards were already starred now... should this also get a star?
Based on its reception I think it should get a star, even if for the most part, the run wasn't my cup of tea. Although it did make me smirk a few times.

Golden Axe (Does this TAS still have support for a star? Is some other TAS preferred in its stead?
I think we should give a star to a fighting game instead. I think MK2 and UMK3 were very well received, and downright hilarious. There's also to consider one of the CPS-2 fighting games. Although generally these games don't excel in accuracy, they're very entertaining, appeal to a crowd that may not like some of the other starred games, and gives us more variety.

Under Options->Preferences->Directories... try clearing the entry for "Save Game"
It is completely clear. There is a bug somewhere.

That's a fair argument. How about AoS get COTM's star and we still do SOTN. That's 1 more castlevania run, but we've had what? 10 new castlevania TASes? 1 more would still be a fair representation, in my opinion.
That sounds good to me.

This movie is in serious need of a star: http://tasvideos.org/1462M.html In fact, we need to give it two stars if we could.

What you see at the ending of the game credits is the best ending. It only occurs if you beat the game without ever dying. Which most players end up never seeing.

I think you need to rethink that. "Decades?" We'd need to put out less than 400 movies a year for it to be decades. Let us not be short sighted, we can be smarter than the guys who designed time_t and IPv4.

From time to time, people seem to be having issues staying logged in, or a particular page keeps kicking them out. To effectively report these kinds of issues, please include the following information: Your ISP, example: AOL Dial Up, Road Runner Cable, AT&T Bell South DSL, and so on. Your HTTP headers for the exact page which is giving you trouble. It should look something like this:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 23:26:19 GMT
Server: Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) mod_fastcgi/2.4.6 mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.8g
Vary: Accept-Encoding
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
Or this:
HTTP/1.x 200 OK
Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 23:27:03 GMT
Server: Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) mod_fastcgi/2.4.6 mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.8g
Set-Cookie: sid=blah blah blah; expires=Mon, 24-May-2010 23:27:05 GMT
Set-Cookie: sid=blah blah blah; expires=Mon, 24-May-2010 23:27:05 GMT
Vary: Accept-Encoding
Content-Encoding: gzip
Keep-Alive: timeout=10, max=500
Connection: Keep-Alive
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
If you use Firefox, install this to get header information: http://livehttpheaders.mozdev.org/installation.html Supposedly this extension does it for Chrome: http://www.chromeextensions.org/webmaster-seo/site-information-tool/ Other browsers will have other methods for getting this information. Posting this information will help us understand why some people are having these issues Note however if you have a line which says "Set-Cookie" followed by sid=something, posting that exact line can allow others to impersonate you, so make sure you replace the alphanumeric ID with something like "blah blah blah" when you post your header information. See above for example.

I don't really see the value in zero padding. However if we do zero pad, is 4 digits enough? Sure in all the years we've been around we're put out almost 1500 movies. But the amount of TASers we have is growing, we support new systems inviting new games to be played, our judges and encoders now move pretty quickly, and thanks to recent changes, our site is now getting better exposure and growing each month. This year so far we actually didn't have as many movies as we usually do, but I can see down the line the possibility for us to be pumping out movies on a large scale. I'd prefer not having to worry about adding another zero 5 years from now (or less), and needing to rename everything again. If we're going to zero pad, we should be thinking about 5 digits right now, which should keep us covered for another decade or two.

Start recording from power+sram clear. And try to beat Tompa's record. Remember, while you're playing you can rewind the game to undo mistakes.
