This run is "just" a general speedrun without any constraints;
Not exactly true - it's been speculated that Arc's recently obseleted any% run would be faster than this run using restarts. I understand he is working on remake of the previous run using restarts which will undoubtedly be faster than this. It was always understood that anyone could easily beat Arc's time using restarts, but the movies would be compared as "If Arc had used restarts, would it be slower than this recent submission?" Well, if Arc had used restarts in the recently obseleted movie, it would have been faster than this. In a nutshell, I think a slower movie just obseleted a faster one simply by using restarts. The trek back from the five missile cluster alone, not to mention needing to use the door glitch again to get back down would take at least 2 minutes. When Zoizite's 1% run came out, it was faster than Arc's any% run, but it didn't obselete it for 2 reasons: 1) It used restarts. 2) It added a new category. This is the precisely the same. Therefore, if Zoizite's movie didn't obselete Arc's, I don't see why this one did (unless it's because it's the same author). We'll see what happens when the any% run using the original route and restarts is submitted. Until then, it doesn't really matter. It's already done.

Just out of curiosity, when Arc's any% run comes out, will that obselete this (I hear it's going to be faster)

I love the alternate method you used in Brinstar to get through the first area you need the Maru Mari without hiding behind that zoomer the whole way. At first I thought I had some weird desynch :) And you sure beat the hell out of Tourian with some seriously limited resources - love the way you blazed through it. And congrats again for the speed. It's now the fastest Metroid movie available. I can't believe the any% run is going to be faster.

Can't wait to see it - I'm curious how fast it can be pulled off.

Sorry for the ignorance, but I think I missed something, never having played the game. In chapter 2, you stop to open a treasure chest with a cupie doll beanie baby and it doesn't look like you use it for anything - what's it for? Great run, despite being over an hour. It was still fun to watch :)

Well, in case there was any question as to the difference between entertainment and speed, I think we all have the answer and understand. Do I even need to vote?

Well, wouldn't the 24 frame something or other thing discovered come into play here? And yet, as Deviance said, the glitches in the time-attack are what take it down to 5 minutes. A time-attack with the same banned glitches would be seconds faster - probably within 2 seconds.

Probably due to its popularity, I really dig the idea that the real-time run is only 9 seconds away from the perfected emulated run (fitting that it's the first game ever released). I don't think it's all that often a real-time record nips at the tool-assisted record. While the time-attackers battle to shave off a couple of frames here and there, so do the real-timers. With enough patience and no day job, I think I could eventually pull off a 5 minute time on an emulator, but real time? Not if I lived to 1000. Incredible performance.

Well, I'm not sure how you'd word avoiding this, but on the final level, there is a boss unique to the level that carries two swords and attacks with a cyclone pattern. He takes more time to defeat than any other opponent in the game (up to 2 minutes). As I mentioned earlier on in this thread, he can be skipped the second time through by going down the tube, jumping as soon as you emerge, and pressing left. You'll land on the next decending tube and skip the boss trigger entirely. It is a glitch, and it really saves bunches of time. And the jumping shield guy can be skipped in China (the second time through). When you go through your first set of spikes (with the wall of spikes attacking), you will end at a transport tube. Go down and immediately slide left. If a turret appears to your right out of the ground, you'll bump that off the screen before it fires and you'll skip the impending boss entirely. He doesn't take as long as the purple spinning boss, but it is a time saver. As far as I know, nobody has figured a practical use for the sliding through the roof glitch, but I'm sure there's a way to illegally implement it.

Well, it never has any impact on the outcome. A no vote with no explanation never carries any weight, from what I've seen.

When you say "basic guidelines", are you talking about your contest to see who can use their superior save state movie making skills to claim $100?
A little harsh. Not once did I mention (or have I ever really mentioned) my site (which I admit, hasn't worked itself yet into a perfect identity, but I'm trying, all at my expense), but I was more talking about some guidelines I noticed here: Compare different paths and select the one that can be done fastest. "As <adjective> <...> as possible" type primary goals are usually failed attempts of accomplishing perfection. The only adjective that we usually allow in that goal is "fast". And again, if Pom's movie couldn't be made as fast as this one without compromising its style, I would be opposed. But it can. In this circumstance, I'll vote yes for the faster movie.

Well, according to that logic, I see no reason why Pom can't make a video as entertaining as his current one but as fast as this one. If he had to compromise style for speed, I would be opposed, but that isn't the issue here.

Phil's is faster. I think it should be published. If they were the same speed, I'd vote for Mr. Pom's, but according to the basic guidelines, I'm gonna go with Phil's.

OK, so I'm just curious (not that it has any real effect on anything), but who got an account just so he/she could put one "No" vote on every single poll lately? There's never an explanation.

Well, I'm a bit torn. The new glitch discovered in Ninja Gaiden 2 is at the top of the list - it really makes for some astounding gameplay. That and all the impressive stuff you can do with SMB1 - it's incredible that the oldest game can still surprise you. But I think I'm gonna have to go with Walker Boh's "Air-Walk" glitch in Rygar. First of all, it opens up the game so there's nowhere you can't go before you're supposed to. Furthermore, when used in consort with the warp glitch, a game that should take about an hour can be beaten in under 10 minutes. And finally, it opens you up to go places you aren't supposed to go at all (shake hands with an Indora). It gets my vote.

Not gonna submit it here? Or are you waiting for an improvement from my end? (Oh, it's on!)

Then I'll keep trying. Honestly, it's not looking too good. Sure wish a vet would pick up on this idea instead *wink wink*. Thanks for the info, though.

Well, here I am at the bomb empass, and I'm not sure which way to go. Is there anyone who can confirm or deny the idea that you can be boosted across the Tourian bridge with damage alone? I've heard it's possible, and I'll keep trying if it is, but otherwise, I'm going for the bombs. But I don't want to go on further until I know one way or the other.

I shouldn't have cited this specific example. It was more rhetorical than anything else. This example would be perfect if Arc's video wouldn't be faster with restarting. Then, we'd have 2 completely different routes, one faster without restarting and one faster with. I would wonder which people would think is better or how it would be judged at all.

I can't think of a single reason to not publish this video. It's faster both in time-units and real-time. But I do have a couple of questions: -A couple of times you fire 2 fireballs instead of 1 to get your speed going - just because? -A couple of times before the flag (6-3 is really noticable), you fire fireballs - to keep from getting fireworks? -In 7-2, it looks a little clumsy when you get sucked down a bit - any loss of time there? -7-3 is a pretty straight forward, linear level. How did you pull it off faster than Yy? But nothing really to talk about - certainly, yes.
