Is there a tool to hex edit these movie files yet? I have about 30 seconds of a Riven run, but it desynchs. Also, the game is multiple disks. How would I go about making a TAS? Would I record one video segment for each disk change, and then force people to pause at the end of the movie? Even then, data has to be sent between disks... Is it possible to support recording from a savestate?

The link to the savestates, http://www.freewebs.com/apocalypse123/gtastates.zip, seems to be broken. I hadn't intended to even use them, but after about 5 minutes in I changed my mind :S
Hm, it's working for me. If there's another place you'd suggest for me to upload them, I'll do it there.

That'd be shocking. Imagine someone watching a TAS for the first time. "What the hell, mario's spasming- Wow, how'd they go through the door? WTF?! I thought it was supposed to be the first Bowser level! What the hell is going on here?!"

I do have the frame counter showing, but my movies both end at different times and I'm too lazy to find the ending point on the one that ends earlier. All I know is the ingame timer says 45 seconds instead of 43, and the redone one is faster. The alien on the ladder at the end of level 1 knocks me back horizontally, which wastes time. By the time I get onto the ladder it's down too far for me to really save time by taking damage since it moves faster (I can't catch up until near the bottom). Edit: First boss dead, tell me what you think. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/440559366/Apo123%20-%20Alien%203%20lv2redone.fcm

You're on digital, not analog right? I'll post a pic of my controller settings in a minute. Edit: http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/1075/pscxcontrolleroy8.png I don't think the analog sticks work yet, haven't tried them at all. The dpad will work, though.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1949931479/Apo123%20-%20Alien%203%20lv2redone.fcm - Level 2 redone, 2 seconds faster. It ends at a different time than the previous movie, so I dunno how many frames I saved (probably around 70). Climbing up to the prisoner, then dropping down results in better elevators, even though I still have to wait. Anyone have any tips for fighting bosses? I think I'll stay as close as possible without getting hit, and constantly walk away + turn and fire to hit as much as possible without taking damage.

There is a ROM for it that plays on Mupen. I'm not sure if this means there's an N64 version (notice that the buttons at the top reflect the GC controller). In my opinion an all-temples TAS for MQ is definitely worth it. Apperantly the dungeons were all redesigned, so it'd be different than the OoT TAS we have currently. I'm not sure about this, but maybe some glitches are fixed in MQ.

That was awesome, I've never played MQ but had always assumed it was just a clone of OOT for the gamecube. Guess not. Too bad you abandoned the MQ run, though.

Angerfist that should work (my settings are practically the same and it works for me). Set the plugin to No Sound though, unless that desynch problem's been fixed. As for memory cards, it works for me. ..\memcards\Mcd001.mcr for memory card 1, ..\memcards\Mcd002.mcr for memory card 2. You only have 1 memory card file? Try making a copy, renaming the copy to Mcd001, and loading that for card 1. If that fails, I'll upload my memcard 1 for you. Read mode is correct, if you load a cd and autodetect.

I still think the minesweeper in 28 frames should have gone in concept demos or something. First run that was encoded in an animated GIF.

Yeah, the sound threw me off on that level, since I started going along with it and then it goes silent, and the dominoes change speed. Can't tell you how many times I got to around 90 and then lost because I clicked too fast.

Hey, any feedback at all is appreciated :) Random notes: The RPG can be fired again a couple frames after the current shot explodes or goes off the screen. 1 RPG = 2 machine gun shots. The machine gun fires in 3 frame bursts - hold A for 3 frames to fire 1 shot. Normal enemies take 3 shots (9 frames). The machine gun builds up a cooldown time, after which it cannot be fired for a couple seconds. The machine gun can be fired upwards diagonally, the only weapon to be able to do so. Grenades (the throwable kind) are powerful but slow. It does either 3 or 4 machine gun shots equivalent, I'll have to test it. Even after it "leaves" your hand, movement can affect the trajectory, so fire a few frames early of what you'd normally throw. You stop for 6 frames to throw one. The flamethrower cannot be fired while moving, and it also burns through ammo the slowest. It appears to be equivalent to grenades in terms of damage, but faster with a shorter range. My guesses: RPG = 2 MGS, grenades = 3 MGS, flamethrower = 4 MGS. I'll need to do more testing, though. "Pit" type platforms (with a hole in the middle for you to jump down, like an elevator shaft) have clipping issues with the left side. If you jump off to the right, then start holding left on a particular frame, you can clip inside it and fall through. The game's physics creates invisible walls to the left and right while falling; at one point you will simply drop straight down after colliding with the boundary. Edit: Bah, the 2nd run is several frames slower than the first. Redoing it again.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/808862825/Apo123%20-%20Alien%203%20lv2%20test.fcm - Level 2 completed. Unfortunately, I don't think I did very good on this one, and will definitely redo it. One major problem was those damn elevators. Since there's nothing to do but wait around, I burn through most of my ammo. Jumping onto the platform at the top is faster than riding the elevator up. Anyone have any suggestions on improving this? If you spot anyplace where you think I can save some time, please say so.

I have to admit there's a certain charm to colorful pretty graphs. :)
Not just the colors, but it's also shiny. Oooh.... shiny.... Seriously though, I like being able to rate on a scale from 1 to 10, and also that you don't have to vote on Entertainment or Quality if you don't want to. I also like the ability to change your vote, because I misclicked on 7 instead of 8 on one video.

Yes. Very nice improvements. I have to admit, I thought it was a joke when I first saw the topic... then I watched it. How long till we get a sub 5 minute run?

I voted with the herd (last choice), but I'd like to point out a problem: With ratings, at least for me, it's hard to be able to give a useful answer on the Technical aspect. While 5 may be average, I don't exactly know how to judge how optimized a movie is. While some mistakes can be obvious, it's hard to see those little, tiny mistakes costing only a few frames, which more experienced people will be able to spot immediately. I may end up voting an unoptimized movie a 9, because while the end result looks very good, there may be many many little mistakes which cost time. How would that get factored in?

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/476722473/Apo123%20-%20Alien%203%20edited.fcm - Redid level 1 (without wasting any ammo this time). Saved a couple frames of lag, and jumped 2 platforms at once instead of 1 at a time where I could. You can jump over a platform when it's lower than you, but not when it's higher. Me Platform A ________Platform B _________________Platform C Is possible, but _________________Platform C Me______Platform B Platform A Is not. You can't jump far enough to do it :\ Anyways, movie 2 is 90 frames faster. I'll run it once more, and see if I can coax a few more frames out of it. L+R and U+D doesn't have any effect as far as I can tell. Edit: Bah, it didn't accept the spaces. Using underscores instead.

Theoretically, wouldn't you be able to "warp" the mouse, having it be at one place one frame and be across the screen the next? That'd be... insane.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1916274156/Alien_3_%28U%29_%5B%21%5D.fcm - Mission 1's test run is done, time to redo it. I think I can save more frames, and I'll take sticky's suggestion and fire only when needed. Currently 5 seconds ahead of max's submission. The menu screen is horrible, it looks slow because the game makes you wait 8 frames between each action. Jumping 2 platforms at a time may actually be slower than jumping one at a time, because movement is significantly slower in the air. However, there is the landing pause to think about (4-5 frames).
