just an update, I've wired up a stub of the bot to snes9x. The stub successfully creates input, reads Mario Kart's variables, and saves/loads game states to/from arrays. Now I'm ready to start working out the quadralaterals and the 'meat' of the bot.
Just working out the shortest path for each level won't do much especially if there is CPU interaction. It would work for time-trials, though :). You could eliminate most of the computations by "hardcoding" the track width, length coordinates. Instead of taking a million years, it would only take about 100 ;). Or are you just going to be using the bot for short segments? Like bisqbot? Actually, I'm quite interested to see some of the pseudocode you have. I probably won't understand any of it, but I'm mainly interested in how you managed to interact with SNES9x remotely? Did you call some DLLs? Viewing fmod.dll just gave me a bunch of sound/music functions...
I'm going to use the bot for the whole of the track, from just after accelerate is pressed to get a turbo-start, until it hits the finish line. I got around the problem of calling snes9x remotely by... not calling it remotely! I've hacked in code to call my bot in the bit where snes9x checks for keyboard input.
Is it going to test every single freaking button combination every single frame until the end of the track recursively to find the combination that yields the fastest time? Or by the whole of the track from the start to the finish line do you mean that you will just be using the bot for the whole track, but splitting the track into segments? Cause I can imagine the first one would take forever...

In most cases, you make a savestate and then load it after you pass the point while playing back the movie. Make sure it's not on read-only playback, though.
Note that you don't have to play back the movie past that point to resume there if you already have a savestate there.

So, if I make any more AVIs, should I force it to encode at some other FPS? I mean, if the game runs at 20 FPS, but the menu at 60, wouldn't it still be wrong for one or the other regardless what settings I used?
There's some "frame decimate" option you can use with .H264. But I don't think anyone will mind if you can just encode at 20 FPS.
I'm pretty sure no one cares if the menus have a lower frame rate...

maybe Yoshi can be made to give 120 stars instead of 100 lives ;) how'd you find Yoshi? first get 100 lives and then he'd be there of course ;)
That made no sense at all.

No, 1v7c means one human versus 7 computers, the latest version of starcraft is 1.13f but it doesn't seem to work on mine.

What version of SC is that on? Whenever I try to play the rep you just die in 10 seconds. On another note, I played on Fastest on The Hunters Gamei 1v7 melee last night to try and do the same thing you did and I won in about an hour. Mass tanks + turrets.

Too bad you're about a year too late to make any difference. Please don't revive dead threads. =(

Try VLC Media Player. Works on everything used here I think.

I vote for 3, although if it's as boring as people say it is 2 is the next best thing. Definitely not any of the other ones.

Why is it always Megaman and Forte? Why not Rock man and Bass?
Well most people know of megaman as megaman whereas Forte isn't as popular a character in America, therefore people refer to him as Forte (the name appearing in the title of the thread) rather than Bass (his American name) I was aware of the conflict as I was writing the post but I figured no one would complain. Guess I was wrong. =P

Off topic: There's actually serious evidence that the whole "cholesterol is bad" is the biggest myth of the 20th century: http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/cholesterol_myth_1.html So you probably can rest easy on the cholesterol part. Of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful about your fat consumption... :P
That was a great read, I'm 18, 5'6 and 110 pounds so I don't really worry about my diet but I was in shock at the claims...so I did a little research and it seems to check out. Guess I'll keep on eating that steak and potatoes <3 And I agree with BOMF, watching little things that look sloppy but actually save time show that the author really did a lot of investigation...as long as you read the submission notes. =)

Great run, never seen megaman move so fast (I've only ever played as Forte due to how hard megaman is to control non-TAS). Voting yes.

Yeah, even though I haven't played this game in ages I remember that the graphics (yeah they suck now but they were great for the time) was half the fun...watching people get blown up and all. This is just meh.

I like that. :D Perhaps it can open up some more extream routs? Perhaps not grabbing any stars at all?
This has already been discussed, you can't go through the key doors without the keys...you might be able to get through the first bowser door (8 stars) somehow but I can't see how you would get through the second one without the MIPS rabbit (requires 15 stars), and you need to beat Board Bowser's Sub to get to bowser 2.

I downloaded the ROM and an emulator just to watch this and all I can say is wow. After the swimming levels (which are a chore to watch in any game) it was just mind blowing. Keep up the good work, I hope your next WIP comes soon!

The fact that Megaman can move so fast simply astounds me. I never played as Megaman in this game because Forte is just way cooler. o_o

This is the most amazing run in the world...YI was the first run I ever saw TAS'd (linked from the SDA discussion) and it is my favorite of all time (although it may be outclassed by the 120 star m64 run when it comes out) This 100% run is 10x better than both of those though. Keep up the good work, it's amazing...
