Okay. Thanks for the enthusiasm. Right now I'm working on both the old Eggerland game and this one. I've got about fifteen or sixteen seconds saved on Eggerland, but I'm still working on getting Round 45 perfect. (The levels are numbered by a cheat code.) It's annoying to try to get the Almas at the top out of my way. Likewise, I'm trying to get a good time on the next level after where my current Meikyuu no Fukkatsu movie ends, but it's difficult because of the unpredictability of the Leepers. Generally I find it good to start by pushing a block straight up, grabbing the heart on the top of the level, and waiting for a Leeper to follow me over to the right to get the upper-right heart. But when I go to the bottom to try the same thing, the Leeper that comes over wants to turn before it gets in front of the Medusa. The best thing I've found to do is to put a block in front of the Leeper, wait for it to bounce off a nearby Leeper (I have to manipulate it there using position a little bit, I think), and then push the block down, at which point the Leeper will decide to block the Medusa correctly. Then I can go ahead and grab the hearts on the left easily. But does anyone else have a better idea? Some competition might help cut down the time on an hour-plus movie!

yup i've done it and thats all you need to do. just make sure you slide far enough in so that when you jump, you dont get hooked by a pixel or 2 on the edge cuz you will stop and go through the usual fight scene.
Except there is no fight scene. That explains why they didn't bother making the barrier solid.

Yeah, I should probably work on Lolo 3 again. I just got sick of playing level 3-10.

Oh, well, as I was saying, it's got lots of new levels, and many of them are more difficult than the ones in the first Eggerland. It's just a shame that I can only find 10 levels to skip (the ones leading to the map and the bell). If you can think of anything else that might speed it up, please tell me. And if you're searching for ROMs, keep in mind that sometimes they're named "Eggland" or "Eggaland" instead of "Eggerland".

It would be nice if we could fix Out Of This World so we wouldn't have to watch a silent movie of it.

Anyway, I don't see the point. The current system works just fine and the files aren't THAT big. Or if you don't want the AVI-files you can still get the emulator movies. Getting them to work isn't a very big feat.
Yes it is! My friend was mad because he couldn't get SNES9x movies to stay synchronized, even though he used the right emulator and the right ROM and all the right settings. And he can't very well download the .avi on his computer because he's got a 28.8 connection and that's his only phone line.

Hmm, nice. Do you think this will fix any other games?

Or we could just pretend that distributing the ROM is legal and hope we get away with it. That sounds about as good a plan as any I've heard in a while. And if we don't get away with it, then, um, we'd just be civilly disobedient, in protest of, uh, unfair copyright laws. Yeah.

Actually, it would be possible, but complex, to convert a .smv or other to a .swf using the ROM...
For that I think you'd need to program a whole new emulator that can somehow keep track of all the sprites and their movements to be able to convert the graphics for use in Flash.

Here is the movie I've started, from the beginning to opening the first door. http://www.geocities.com/ryan_ferneau/eggland.zip Note that the beginning levels are not really indicative of the rest of the game--later on, there are much harder levels that were not re-used for Adventures of Lolo. Be sure to tell me if you see any mistakes now, so I won't have to redo as much! My main concern is that the final movie will be too long. I'm estimating an hour and fifteen minutes, since I believe there are 142 puzzles I have to do, and an average Lolo puzzle takes about half a minute to complete, plus I'll have to do that battle at the end. Do you think you can sit still that long?

I'm not sure. I always liked the Lolo series because everything moves in 8-pixel increments, so there's less frame-by-frame stuff you have to do. Generally speaking, though, I think item management is a big factor in the difficulty of a game. That's one of the reasons I tried Totally Rad/Magic John for my first action game time attack: I didn't have to worry about picking up any items. Also, any kind of randomness will make a speed run harder to perfect, since there are many ways to affect a random event, and you may have to test all the possibilities.

I always thought it was harder to get the more popular games because they're always the ones that the IDSA cracks down on.

If that's the case, what about savestates? You're not only manipulating input, you're essentially jumping around in time, from a game perspective.
But the purpose of that is to create the input, which can then be used in an unmodified game.

Yeah, Bomberman Quest might be too long to be interesting. Bomberman is really slow in that game, and using a speed-up item would waste more time on the menu. I just thought it would be nifty to figure out where to go and what to get when.

Oh, I haven't even tried Super Mario Land yet. I was just thinking about it. As I said before, I've mostly been playing Bomberman games, but I've already noticed several games that don't have sound in the patched VisualBoyAdvance but do have sound in the regular VisualBoyAdvance. And Bomberman GB 3 also freezes at the title screen in the patched version. Pretty scary.

It's also on GameCube, but the A and B buttons are switched around for some unfathomable reason, so I can't quite recommend it.

Oh, okay, thanks. I also have a concern about Super Mario Land now, though. Would a movie of it play the bonus games? Of course the bonus games would add time, but it's more impressive to reach the higher exit than the lower exit (hence why it earns you the bonus game), and you could show off getting three lives every time if you wanted.

I like damage better when the character gets extra movement out of it. Like in Super Metroid, where Samus gets knocked way back really fast whenever she gets hit. But in the latest Astyanax movie, it doesn't look so good because he's always bumping into things without it noticeably helping, so it just looks like the player can't fight.

Okay, so you've got the ol' Supie Mario and Magaggie Man games. But now I'm giving some thought to the Kirby games. For Kirby's Dream Land 1, you could not only set it to hard mode with the Extra Game code but also force a no-damage run by setting lives and health to 1 with the Debug Mode code. That would look pretty sweet. For Kirby's Dream Land 2, I'm wondering if the run should collect all the Rainbow Drops or not. You could probably do it both ways, to show both endings. Or you could make one a 100% run where you go back and play the bonus games perfectly to get the other 6%. And as for Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble, how is the tilt input emulated? I don't know very much about that. But mostly I've been trying out Bomberman games to see which ones would be good. I mentioned Pocket Bomberman would be great, and now I think Bomberman Quest would be a nice game to see done, probably by someone who's into extreme item management. If you want more traditional Bomberman games, I would guess that Bomberman GB 2 and Bomberman Max would be okay games.

Hmm, so would it matter which "Gameboy" you choose? You get your choice of GB, SGB, SGB2, GBC/CGB, GBA, and Automatic. I wonder if it would affect load times, like loading colors and borders.

Oh, uh, it desynched for me too. All rerecording I've tried on VisualBoyAdvance desynchs for me. I haven't tried any actual Game Boy Advance games, though; just the old Game Boys. So I don't know.

The levels of Kickle Cubicle would look great. However, I'm pretty sure that literally over half of the movie would be transferring between levels, and it would make it horrible.
Isn't the Japanese version different, though? I remember it let you choose levels on your own without all the story stuff.
