And that's a problem with many FDS dumps: Many of them were already played before they got copied, so they actually start out "dirty". And a lot of games don't have an option to erase all the saved information. I think some emulators make copies of FDS files to store saved games without modifying the original game, but I'm not sure.

My main desire for this site has always been to see it return to Tool-Assisted Superplay Movies, instead of Tool-Assisted Speedruns.
I think it's weird how we remember the same site's history so differently. I always thought that originally, NESVideos was all about finding the shortest time to beat any game (which we merely weren't as successful at before), but later people got tired of that and wanted to see something other than speed. So that would be basically the exact opposite direction of where you're saying it's headed. Maybe what's going on is that we all came to this site, saw some of its videos, and then proceeded to project our own notions of what it's all about onto it. And now we're finding out that we all thought something different.

Okay, that sounds fine, although I think Baxter had a good point that "Aims for maximum entertainment and amusement" is a little harder to judge sometimes.

Well, how do you define "superplay"? Is it like just a collection of cool tricks you can do in a game, and "beating" the game is secondary?

Well, the obsession is a good thing in terms of getting better times, you know. But what do you want the site to be about, Xkeeper? Are you saying the videos should be a little closer to video walkthroughs?

But, that's what the site's always been about. It's already reached that destination! I think you're just in denial.

Many people see the word "quantum" and think "UNLIMITED POWER!"

Man, these Metroid games are about as bad as Super Mario 64 with people wanting extra movies for a whole bunch of different rule sets.

Well yeah, you can fast-forward if there's a long stretch of time where input isn't required.

Each mask would help advance the main plot story, and make the whole moon crashing into Termina scenario seem more dire. For example, you learn that the Butler's sun had died, you hear the sorrows of Anju and Kafei, and how the whole town revolves around the union of these couples.
Oh yeah, I forgot. The masks change the videos you see in the ending. So they are good for something.

Yeah, I'd argue that Majora's Mask only seemed nonlinear because of all the sidequests you could do at various times. The sidequests were even more fun than the main quest sometimes. I think one of the problems with making newer games nonlinear is the trend of putting so much story into a game that it's half a movie. The player is then just playing to get from one part of the story to the next, and in a complex game engine with pre-scripted story sequences, the story can only branch out so much. Movie-to-game adaptations are popular, but it's hard for them to deliver both the movie's experience and a good gaming experience because either the movie's story is allowed to get wrecked, or the game doesn't give much freedom. Of course, you can still point at the sidequest-heavy games to show how you can get in a lot of predetermined story and still have a lot of choices, but that takes a lot of creative world-building.

Besides the fact that many of the later Mega Rock Man games actually give you fewer choices about the order of levels, I started to hate how every traditional Mega Rock Man game has to have an introductory level now. The beauty of being able to choose one of many levels to start on is that you don't have to suffer through the same old "happy green hills" easy first level that's already burned into your mind from all those other gaming sessions where you didn't get very far and didn't feel like using a password. It's actually more fun to decide through trial and error which level is best to start on, and the nonlinearity makes speedruns far more interesting because you don't know what to expect with all the route choices.

About the poll question, I realize it isn't completely correct, but the cases where the answers to "Did you find this movie entertaining" differs from "Do you think this movie should be published" are quite rare. People will always post their opinions in that case.
And then someone else will post, "Uh oh, you didn't give an honest answer to the correct question! You are bad!"

I don't like the idea just because it's not quite clear when a password is "acquired". Does the password have to be onscreen for just one frame? What if the runner is viewing the memory? If you can view the password coherently in the memory ahead of time, does that count as "acquiring" the password? Or what if you think you should be able to figure out the password for where you are from some code cracking? Or what if you think you simply deserve to have the password immediately after beating a level, and so you reset at whatever time you consider the level "beaten"? I'm okay with resetting to take advantage of a savefile, though, since there's always an exact point that the game writes its savedata.

On the Itchy and Scratchy CD-ROM, is there a way to get out of the dungeon without using the wizard key?

Yeah, journalists seem so smart until they write about something you know about, right? Then you see all the errors.
