Well... if hexing didn't work, I probably wouldn't have made this this year. It is true that there might come another suggestion of something else being improvable... but I don't know if that will be tomorrow, or in 5 years, or never, which is why I submitted this.

The thing which bothered me lately was the warped arkanoid encode. feitclub tried everything to get the mkv to work, but (I think) he didn't succeed. I think it's too bad when people want to watch a certain movie and aren't able to. I know mkv's are as good as avi's and I have no problems watching them (although my vlc player did give some graphical glitches... media player classic played it fine)... but for some unexplained reason I like avi's better. I can imagine there are some people who don't even know what an mkv is.

Ok, done. On-topic: I might not have posted in this thread yet, but I think you all know my opinion about the technical rating, which I posted in this thread (it may have even triggered the creation of this thread, but that's probably taking too much credit :p ).

I haven't done any research on what's the fastest route on that level, but this is a movie using your route which is 84 frames faster.

The media players suggested at the codec problem FAQ should work.

Why didn't you do that bomb super slide thing after the zelda cutscene (up to the river)? If it's about saving bombs, then wouldn't it be better to use less bombs at the path to the castle?

just take note that you have to be a bit early with the hand extension or else it'll pop slightly backward instead of forward
Yeah, I also noticed this... but forgot to mention, since it was a long time ago that I played it. Doing all levels will also solve one other essential problem for you: since the levels that appear are random (determined when you press start at the select screen), you would have to play all levels anyway, just to figure out which 5 levels you can complete the fastest ;)

I've spend a little time on this run, and I was considering making a TAS of this game when all my other current projects are completed (so not within the next year). I think a 2 player movie will be BY FAR the most entertaining possibility for a tas. It will make the movie a lot faster and very impressive to watch, also considering the huge amounts of planning that would be needed.

my idea was to simply play the first 5 stages (manipulating to get optimal gold bar patterns of course) once and the bonus stage (which has only one pattern) then end it there since the game loops after that point.
I think the movie should play ALL levels (which are about 20, counting the bonus levels) before input stops. It is true that the first level doesn't loop, so not all the first levels can be played, you can pick the first level you want by luck manipulation. I made a movie of this first level, you can find it here. Another thing I noticed: to be faster than normal when you don't make a turn is to still put your hand out, and let go as soon as it grabs it.

I can't see this happening in reality... I mean come on, how do you emulate 2 separate games which run on 2 separate consoles with 2 different ways of reading movie inputs. I mean, are you gonna invent a new emulator with a new ".gmvandfcm" movie format just for such a run? Overkill on the setup and I doubt running through 2 different ports of the same game is really interesting, especially since they are essentially the same to begin with.
Agreed with everything here... even IF you get it to work to play them both with the same input, what's the point? I can't see why this would be entertaining.

Edit: Do I have to duplicate this post onto both threads? :S
I don't see the point in having 2 threads for this... one of them will be locked, or they'll be fused anyway. I decided to post here, since I had no idea what jaysmad meant with his post at the other topic.

<MissileWaster> i'm guessing that he never actually played the 2d metroids
Yeah, I also suspect JXQ has never played a 2D metroid game.

I personally think it's underrated. Any rating below 9 is a crime against humanity imo.
Good thing I didn't rate the movie then ;)

What movie do you think has a grade that doesn't suit the movie at all? This can be either a rating you think is too high, or you think is too low. NOTE: Saying some movie is overrated is not meant to be mean or something. Just to share what surprised you in this aspect. I'll start off. Underrated: NES Rockin' Kats (the full run) by Diman - current rating 5.5 It can be improved A LOT, so I agree with the 4.8 it got for technical value... but I think the entertainment value of 5.9 is on the low side... since I can really enjoy watching the run. Overrated: Genesis King's Bounty by Aqfaq - current rating 7.5 I can see why the high technical rating, and I can see why people like the concept... but I don't enjoy actually watching the run at all. I'm not saying I'm bored, since it's so short, I was just surprised it got a 7.5 Edit: It might be useful to post the current rating the movies have, since the rating can change.

I have some good news and some bad news. Good news is: we are progressing nicely! We have just completed the fourth levels at all megaman games. (possibly) Bad news is: we won't release any more wips. It was already announced that we would stop releasing them after the next, but we decided now that the previous wip was the last one we make public. The final product will be a lot more entertaining if you watch the run as a whole, and it will have more surprises. Thanks for your replies here so far, they are always motivating. :)

This seems weird to me, since it's not about the movie, but about the game. If it's about the game, than these "awards" (aren't awards supposed to be a good thing?) would be about the worst games still accepted for publication... which is pretty strange, since games like where is waldo wouldn't get an award since they aren't published. Anyway, this thread seems to me too much like the "worst games to TAS"-thread.

Thoughts?
I'll just post what I think of your points. The stars you wanted to remove:
Zurreco wrote:
Sonic 3 and Knuckles: while it is a great run, I don't think it should really be recommended to first time viewers. Too much is going on in such a fast paced game, and it offers nothing of base entertainment that the Sonic 2 run doesn't already offer.
Agreed.
Zurreco wrote:
Super Mario Bros 2: SMB2 is basically SMB3 but with grabbing stuff and less entertainment.
I somehow see your point, but I would still keep it. There are some surprises in the run, and the game is very well known.
Zurreco wrote:
Castlevania: I feel that this could be replaced with the better looking/sounding Castlevania 4
Agreed
Zurreco wrote:
Bionic Commando/HnF: a fairly outdated run that could be replaced with a handful of other runs. This one I'm on the fence about.
Disagreed. I don't know the game, and the only reason I watched it was because it had a star... and it entertained me. I think the star lets people enjoy the run who wouldn't have watched it otherwise.
Zurreco wrote:
Legend of Zelda: Since we are already using a much more entertaining A Link to the Past in the queue, I don't see what LoZ has to offer new viewers.
Strongly disagreed. This is one of the most entertaining movies of the site to me. One of the first movies I would recommand to first time viewers. The stars you wanted to add:
Zurreco wrote:
Castlevania 4: already stated
Like stated, agreed.
Zurreco wrote:
Super Punch Out!: a very fast paced and variable run.
It's not my type of game, so I can't judge this... others are enjoying it though.
Zurreco wrote:
Gimmick: Either run for this game is very entertaining.
I agree they are entertaining, but I don't think I would give them a star.
Zurreco wrote:
The Lost Vikings: The only 3 player run on the site. Also one of the most entertaining.
Disagreed. I must admit, I don't know the game... but I watched the run. It's probably because I don't know the game, but I wasn't entertained a bit.
Zurreco wrote:
Harmony of Dissonance: IRC goers are saying that HoD should replace Circle of the Moon. I think that, if anything, they would compliment eachother as recommended runs.
HoD could probably take CotM's star.
Zurreco wrote:
Boulder Dash: A very simple puzzle game made insanely complex by CAD.
Disagreed. I also think CAD did a great job on it, it's (to me) just not suitable for a star.

how was this movie "updated"? what changed for it? the time is the same altho its description says its a minute and half better then the last one which it isnt lol...
I thought I heard Bisqwit say he replaced the fcm with the same fcm because the fcm link didn't work (or something, I'm probably wrong). Either way, it's still the same movie, and the half minute faster refers to the previous version of the movie (the one completed in 23:17).

5 bucks says no one in that catagory can suggest anything better.
I have made this suggestion twice before, and I'll make it one last time:

For me, the perfect movie of this game would: - Get all secret characters (this means playing the main game three times, if I'm not mistaken) - Once, beat very hard as fast as possible. - Once, go for highest score, get pacifist on all stages (exept for master hand) if possible) - Once, just go for entertainment, and show off stuff Then, 3 characters are unlocked, and the movie should continue on getting record times on break the targets. this will unlock the last character, and you can make record times on break the targets for everyone. Finally, make records for every character on board the platforms... the stop the movie.
This way, everything this game could possibly show will be in one movie. I don't think we need 5 movies of this game. The fact that there is a "once go for entertainment" suggestion in this movie is because of the fact that I couldn't think of any clear logical goal here. I know this entertainment factor is subjective, but all other objects are not, and to obsolete the movie, you would just have to beat the previous movie at one of those other objects. I also heard about this suggestion "it'd be a huge project"... well maybe, but far bigger projects have been done.

There hasn't been a wip update lately, but therefore, this new wip is nearly twice as long as normal. The new movie is over 7500 frames longer, which is over 2 minutes. The movie is now almost 30.000 frames long. Here is the new wip in fcm (AVI will follow shortly). I could post about some stuff you might notice, but it's probably more practical if you just post your questions if some action in the run is unclear. Enjoy the wip :)

The Trick That Becomes Even More Surprising After Seeing The Explanation But It Was Still Really Interesting The First Time As Well Award goes to Bisqwit for the latest Megaman 1 movie (The glitch I'm talking about is of course the Cutman Is So Insistant On That He Has A Scissor Flying In The Air That He's Trying To Suck Back That Megaman's Velocity Gets All Messed Up glitch). The Making Tools That Can Seem Unneeded But Are In Reality Awesomately Elite Award goes to Bisqwit for his constant rewriting of BisqBot. The Most Perhaps Unneeded But Still Damned Cool Measure To Make A Tool Assisted Speedrun Faster Award goes to Bisqwit for his complete disassembly of the Megaman ROM.
I'm not trying to discredit Bisqwit in any way, but if Bisqwit gets all the awards, the whole idea of awards is kinda pointless... It also seems these are 3 awards for the same thing (Bisqwit doing a glitch at rockman with the use of Bisqbot).
