What I'm really waiting on is for the ZSNES crew to implement more TAS tools (memory watch and so on) or for the SNES9X crew to implement a Rewind function, which I don't really want to do without.
One nitpick at the moment: I don't think the Metroid Legacy run deserves to be in the Hacks section, since it is an accepted hack. Personally, I'd make a new section for cancelled runs, or else put it in "Not Optimal" based on what Cpadolf said.
Just have one question, Kriole: Did you consider getting to the Wrecked Ship backwards? It seems to me that doing so would've been faster, considering that you were fairly close to the elevator after getting the Plasma Beam. I know you said the run was just for entertainment, but I'm curious.
Sorry to double-post, but I think catnap222's Metroid Legacy 100% run deserves some attention. An excellent run; I can't imagine why he cancelled it, considering Legacy is on the approved romhacks list.
I was very entertained by the 96-exit WIP. Thanks for posting it, and sorry to hear you won't be finishing it.
EDIT: Forgot I wanted to ask, does ISM have an ETA on his run?
The other reason I was holding off on watching them was that I didn't want item locations spoiled for me, because I haven't really played Redesign yet. Having decided it doesn't really matter, I watched your WIPs, and my mind is blown. Can't wait for the finished run. Few questions in the meantime.
1. Is that seriously it for Ridley? Or is that a decoy?
2. Are you supposed to fight him first, or are you really screwing with the boss order?
Have you got an estimate on how soon you'll be finished, Saturn? Everyone's reactions have me interested, but I'd rather wait and watch a finished run than watch a WIP and get irritated that you're not done yet.
They don't really qualify as "board" games, but my family enjoys the hell out of playing Balderdash and Apples to Apples. Rarely does a game happen that at least one of us doesn't burst out laughing.
While I was doing some preliminary work on a Super Return of the Jedi TAS earlier, the question occurred to me..."Why play at the hardest level?"
From what I've seen in my time here, it's fairly well-accepted that a TAS's purpose is to entertain, not show skill, so what's the point of turning up the difficulty? In general, higher difficulties just mean more/tougher enemies, perhaps detracting from the entertainment value or making the movie take longer. (A notable exception would be Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, since more goals are added as the difficulty increases, which changes the run completely.)
What say you guys?
I can think one one in particular I'd like to see applied to movies..."Takes damage only where necessary." Super Metroid is a game where this could be applicable; you can't technically make a no-damage TAS of it because you have to let Mother Brain fry you with her Hyper Beam to progress the battle with her. But you could have a "Takes damage only where necessary" run of it.
Another category, along the same lines, would be "Only takes damage intentionally." This could be applied to DarkKobold's Shining Force run.
what is this i don't even
That was amazing. Fantastic ammo/energy management, and entertaining to boot. Yes vote for sure.
EDIT: Agree with Warp. This should be a "uses warps" movie, and it shouldn't obsolete any of the others.
Probably not idoms per se, but I enjoy saying "What, this is new?" or "Why are you saying this like we don't already know it?" when someone says something I already know.
I'm probably wrong, but I keep thinking that there may be a powerbomb somewhere in Norfair that can be received without super missiles. In addition, the kejardon movie didn't collect the speed booster.
I think the one behind off the room right behind Crocomire is only sealed with a Missile door, but not sure; I haven't played in a while.
Also, question to Hero or Cpadolf: any word on how soon we can expect your guys's 100% run?
Why do you sometimes do the jump kick going downwards and sometimes just fall normally? (Level 1 comes to mind especially)
No particular reason, just felt like changing it up.
In the level where you were running along top of buildings, near the end of one of the sections, there was a jet of fire that shot straight upwards. It looked like you tried to jump over it and then realized you couldn't, so instead you used that spinning move and went through it. As a result, you needed to wait to land before jumping again. Why not just use the small jump here?
I just checked that, and trying to spin-jump through it results in getting hit. I'm pretty sure I was able to get over it because either A, going into the spin shrinks your hitbox; or B, I just got lucky.
On quite a few bosses it doesn't look/feel like you are hitting it as fast as possible. The brain(?) boss while you were riding the jet and the guy with the red saber stick out in my mind most right now. Against the jet most of the time you hit it while it's off the screen, but one (or two?) hits are delivered after it gets back onto the screen knocking it off again.
As for the red saber guy, he is kept flashing from invincibility for most of the fight. However, there are a few times that he stopped flashing between hits for a frame or two.
The fight against the jet's brain was pretty weird...it seemed to have varying invulnerability-cooldown times.
As for the Red Saber fights, I was concentrating on making those look cool, and sacrificed a bit of speed in the process. I'd guess I didn't lose more than a second or so.
During the elevator climbs in the last level, it seemed as though you weren't 'prepared' for the screen to start scrolling right the first time, and as a result you weren't moving or next to the right hand side of the screen when the scrolling started. Is this an artifact of the game, or are my eyes fooling me?
I'm pretty sure the screen scrolls at the same rate no matter where on it you are, so if I'd been all the way to the right when it started, I'd've had to get all the way over on the next set of elevators to get the screen to scroll all the way, which would mean taking time to get back to the left.
I do appreciate the critique and that you watched the run; I'm not sure if I'll do another run (working full time is really hard when you're not used to it) but you're certainly giving me a lot to think about in case I do.
