So clearly the ideal solution for them is to have the people who speedrun the game also tas the game, that way they also get a result they're happy with, but that will never happen.
It could. I speedrun Metroid Fusion and TAS it as well. However, I think most people who know Prime pretty well aren't TASing it for a variety of reasons, including lack of time, complexity of TASing 3D games, inaccurate emulation, or simple disinterest. That being said, I encourage anyone to attempt a TAS or at least fool around with the game on an emulator to gain a better understanding. I'm honestly not expecting a well optimized TAS of Prime for at least 5 years, if not 10.

I thought vba was still recommended over bizhawk. Is vba not accurate enough?

i'm not going to. you'd also have to do 100% in zero mission and any% in fusion to keep the times close.

i think he's asking for the opposite, but the same thing applies. if you want to edit, hit shift+8 to change it to "movie now editable," and if you want to view a part of the movie, change it to "read-only mode."

Great run! Of course the ending was awesome (I guess it counts as beating the game), but my absolute favorite part came at 26:33 in the encode. You freeze an otherwise inconsequential enemy then use it to build up a wavedash. It's not much, but it's pretty clever and funny.
that trick was actually in the 100% tas. and it's called a shinespark, this isn't melee. :P

i actually found that second trick when i played this game recently and i meant to ask you if it saves time, but i forgot haha. good job for finding it though. i'll look forward to a new tas.

I guess so. I was thinking about glitching a Geodude if it wasn't possible to change the species index and level of a Pokemon, which then you could use the Celebi Egg glitch a level 1 Geodude/Other Pokemon in the Medium Slow Experience group Egg.
i don't think you understand. by executing arbitrary code, he can do just about anything with the game. it would probably be easy to set bellsprout's attack and speed to some ridiculously high number to fight red.

I'm curious about one thing, though: Why did you delete the following sentences from the submission text when they still apply?
i believe he got rid of them in his updated version

i'd suggest using the japanese version. the text scrolls a lot faster. though i guess it's not a huge deal. as for recruiting monsters, i don't remember much about the monsters listed in the route, but in my test run i recruited the two monsters with a spell that boosts your strength. not really sure if it's worth it.

i did a test run of this on the japanese version out of boredom but it's not that great. i'm not really sure of the optimal route or if any monsters should be recruited. as for rng, i think you'd be better off writing a script to brute force walking on the map and optimizing battles. also random question, by reverse engineer do you mean look at the asm/disassembler? i've never known how to do that or what program to use.

Which game, where? How many coins? In the new TAS I will just collect mushrooms on the way, collect a few extra coins and items, and sell items I don't need to buy more mushrooms. It will be just enough to get 4.0 mush power for Birdo&Popple. After that, I will go to bean town's shop and use the MAX Syrup and the 180 coins from the Birdo&Popple battle to buy mushrooms to get 5.0.
it's in the place where you get the second and third hammer upgrade. it's in a cave east of the castle. i actually get the hammer upgrade to smash the rock in front of the desert. there are two games. i don't know if you remember them but they're luck based games. the first one costs 200 and you can get a new bros attack, 300 coins, or nothing. the second game costs 500 and you can get a new bros attack, 800 coins, or nothing. the second game is blocked by dark rocks but you can just clip through. it might not save time for tas, but if you could somehow luck manipulate it on console, it would save a lot of time...

how do you clip through the main entrance of fungitown? could i see a video/vbm? i'm assuming it uses the same trick as the "big skip"? also, i've been considering using the thwomp game to get extra coins for non-tas runs, but you'd have to reload saves a lot. might just be faster to get coins from hitting luigi. edit: i just got it doing the "big skip" method. hopefully it's not too hard on console...

it's good that tas is written there, but technically it still says "tool assisted speedrun speedrun".

Edit: Seems like most of the time Pokemon catch Pokerus as normal (ability to spread). I don't know why Pokerus was removed immediately upon catching it that one time.
i remember reading somewhere that spreadable pokerus lasts a random amount of time once you get it. maybe that was why.

at this point it seems like a segmented run using the big skip glitch would be fastest, even if you have to fight the koopalings. for now i think i'm going to route a single-segment run with only barrel clipping.

perhaps it's tied to some sort of "event" memory address and it checks for a certain value or values. and maybe the things you skip would affect this address.

you could also skip most of the koopalings (i think you only need to fight 3 or so), but your speed will still be too low for the fawful fight. finding an easier way to do the "big skip" glitch would be ideal, but i don't think that's very likely.

my vote goes to doing both with the same character. how much time would glitching through doors save? guess it's irrelevant because we can only tas gamecube for now.

Jump on the barrel, jump off the barrel. While you jump off, change your action command to hammer and break the barrel just as you land on the ground. It only works on one frame.
i thought you're supposed to break the barrel, then jump on the last frame of the barrel breaking animation. that worked for me, but i haven't gotten the other stuff to work, like canceling mario's jump and getting the exact commands you do in your tas.

i'll be trying some runs too, as i have the japanese version. if i can figure out exactly how the glitches work, that is. i've got them partially figured out.

great stuff. i could swear i've quick sidled faster than that, but i don't know much you tested it. edit: oops, missed the part about the sidle improvement.
