Because resets are allowed in this game, I think it is that time that should be paid attention to. It shouldn't matter which route would route would be faster IF restarts weren't used, because they are being used. I think that's the question you asked.

I'd vote for 1), but 2) is probably your safest bet as it is the best compromise.

Some of those are actually constructive criticism. And then there's "this site sucks balls." I wonder who some of those are.

This is actually the first of your runs I've been able to watch, so I received all of the improvements of your several versions in one single movie. It looks so great. The use of diagonal bomb jumps... hits taken to increase speed... toggling gravity suit. Incredible. I do wonder if more hits can be taken in certain spots where it seems obvious, but I feel like you probably tested it, or opted against it for some reason or another. I don't have any examples right now, but since I have no proof I won't hold it against you. edit: Found an example. In the last room before leaving the Wrecked Ship for the first time, you take a hit on sparks to increase speed. You then pass by a second spark without taking damage there. I thought it might be due to health conservation but this doesn't appear to be the case. edit: Also, I wonder if item collection after some bosses could be done more efficiently. Phantoon for example. I couldn't tell, before you get attacked by the big metroid, could you have run earlier to go further before being attacked by it? This wouldn't improve speed, but when Phantoon is forming and there are several blue fireballs, is it possible to fall between them in morph ball mode without being hurt? I apologize if any of these points have been brought up in the Super Metroid thread.

Considering the game and its tendency to desync, if you do plan on submitting it you might want to post your progress anyway.

Then I'll stop work on this all together, and I wish you luck. I did beat Storm Eagle, and then stopped because a) I still wanted to further investigate his flying, and b) I am certain that using those conveyor belts in Flame Mammoth's stage can help your time. I was testing various things regarding them however, and never really finished that. Basically, I wanted to see if for the conveyor belts that go with you, if a jump after dashing on them is just as fast as dashing on them. For the belts that go against you, I wanted to test dashing along them and immediately jumping vs. dashing the opposite way for one frame, jumping, then turning around and continuing. Tell me if you need this clarified. Here's how far I got: http://www.thezorz.com/blechy_megamanx.smv If I remember, there was a part in the intro stage with the tiniest bit of lag, which could have been avoided. Watching it again I didn't see it, but I remember it being there. Possible things that might be improved: Intro Killing the rolling robot fella at the second bee. Him being there causes lag. I'm pretty sure I tried various things regarding this but couldn't get anything better. Getting Vile to come out faster. This caused a fair amount of stress, but the current one was the very best I could get. Also, it might be possible to stop him from jumping back immediately, but that too I tried and couldn't achieve. Chill Penguin The boss- man this guy was a pain. You can test alternate ways of fighting him, but I couldn't tell you how. Storm Eagle The boss. Not sure his flight can be avoided, but if so it will save time. If not, I think my fight is close to perfect. One other note: If you are walking on the slanted/diagonal ice you have a small amount of gained speed. If you jump off of it at the last frame possible, you can maintain this speed over straight ground where you'd normally be walking at the slower, normal pace. This occurs for dashing as well, however the dash must be initiated on the slope. If you start a dash on straight ground then continue over the slanted ground, you will maintain the normal speed. This isn't enough to warrant stopping a dash to start it on sloped ground, but it is enough to aim your dash/jump lengths to land on one. Be careful of the lag the mace fellas in Storm Eagle cause. Good luck.

I did notice a chance to improve this for maybe 10ish easy frames. If you make it so that when you throw the very final rock at the boss, you're standing as far away as possible, you can stop the movie earlier. I don't think this was done, at least. It's up to the author to consider this. Edit: in fact, the final amount of frames is an exact multiple of 60. I'm not sure if this means you'd be able to lower the time by 1 second with even a 1 frame improvement.

I think more jumping away from the raft then catching up with it would have been good for the raft part, I liked when it was used the one time. The self-scrolling scenes were a little dull, but I liked the platforming parts. Interesting shots, and a fair amount of dodging- I vote yes.

feitclub's description and analogies were perfect in my opinion. As soon as it started I gave a bit of a chuckle cause it was so bad, but that badness did not make it a consistently entertaining movie like Dark Castle. But I'm with everyone else in that I'd like to see you move onto something better, because I didn't notice any errors.

I found this movie very boring- it's literally the same play over, and over, and over again. That play is well done I suppose, but I just don't think it's interesting, and I'm pretty sure this would stay the same for anybody watching it. I was curious about the "odd things" and kept watching at high speed, but at 255 the score simply resets and counts from 0.

I can confirm that he achieves it in this time. Comparing levels: Your level 1 is slightly faster than his(though he does do some things slightly faster). His level 2 is faster than yours, due to not using the trashcan warp, and handling some bosses faster. His level 3 is a lot faster than yours, due to using carnival games rather than that coin room to collect balloons. 280ish vs 232 time units. His level 4 is faster, due to not collecting jebediah's head for invincibility Your level 5 runs are completely different, and I lost track, heh. However, he ends at 595 and you end at 550ish. I'm sorry you can't find the video, but I tried to outline the primary differences. You both had advantages and disadvantages compared to the other one. Because the run is slower than an existing one, I'm going to vote no. I'm also curious about bisqwit's comment.

If everyone in the 80's was killing SMB1 in 6:00 and the world record was 5:50, and Nintendo released an official, "maximum potential" VHS starring Skip Rogers that proved it could be beaten in under 5:10, not only would the record holder drop everything and shoot for the 5:10, they'd sell a million copies. Then Nintendo would be rich.
I can confirm that Skip Rogers has the abilities to achieve this.

Finally got a chance to check it out. I like the route and planning that went through it very much. I never made it far in when I played, so I was shocked to see the additional things I didn't know about that you had to plan out. It's a little slow in the beginning(you can't control that) but really picks up after your first shopping spree. As AxeMan asked, could this have occurred earlier? You don't spend all your money during the first shop call. That said, there are a some aesthetic things I feel could be improved. First, in the realm of accuracy. A whole lot of bullets miss, usually during boss fights(and almost always you shoot more than is needed to kill them). Also, even though you're not at a risk of dying, and it doesn't slow you down, I feel like a lot of hits could be avoided without losing time. Especially those dealt to you by enemies you just killed- I think many of them can be attacked earlier, so that you just barely reach the self destruct thing when it ends. Also, there are rare times when you try to jump into a narrow crevice(I think it happened before your first encounter with demon for example), miss the jump, and have to jump a second time to make it. I think these could be fixed. Also regarding jumping, this one I'm not sure about, but because hitting the ceiling slows you, perhaps some of these times you could not jump as high or take a lower route(for example skipping on water rather than walking along the platforms above) I'm greatly looking forward to the final run.

The latter 3/4 of this semester was a killer. I'm on break for a month, and I'll probably work on things in that time. However, though I've progressed in this, I'd rather fix MMX2, so that will probably come before this.

Agree to disagree indeed, I don't think much more can be done than that. Also, your Super Monkey Ball 2 video actually was impressive enough to cause me to recently buy the game, and I enjoy it. I don't think I'd do the same if I saw a tool-assisted run of it. The run would not spoil the game for me or anything like that, but there is some automatic feeling of competition, or comparing yourself with another when you see someone legitimately do something very impressive. When I saw the 26 minute Mario 64 video, I felt an even more competitive feeling. I felt I could beat it, and even though I probably wouldn't have sent it in to SDA or anything, it would have been fun to. It's just more fulfilling than beating a tool-assisted run. As bob said, I find speed runs to be more impressive than time attacks- but that doesn't mean I don't find both equally entertaining.

Can you even alter your speed? Isn't this again like gradius, in that how fast you progress can't be determined, but your placement on the screen can be. The way I remember, you can really only get a better time by using a boost at the most optimal moment so you are as far forward as possible when reaching the finish line.

You inspired me. 39:73 is now my best. I assume in your route you use touch a pad and die simultaneously? It happens 2 times in my route, but whether you die or not, and whether you touch it or not, seems very decided by luck.

I was wondering, did the qkumbr guy miss a step at 960, or is that just as high as it can count? edit: looking at the end screen, I guess he missed 3.

I tried a whole bunch, I think my best was someone's (NRG's?) metal storm run from a long time ago, which was never submitted. That was just 16000ish though.

Ah, when the movie ended I picked locke for no real reason, not thinking about sprint shoes. He walked slowly, and it occurred to me. I thought "maybe he unequipped them in advance so locke could now equip them", but there were none in the inventory. It didn't occur to me you wouldn't be using locke first, heh.

I tried downloading multiple times. Bisqwit sent it to me. I'm really not sure which I'd like more in the long run. It does have a good deal of creative kills, and it also saves a lot of time doing so. Does ammo get transferred from one level to another? As in 1-whatever to 2-1, not just between stages. If not, try to always end with 0 after each level. If so, just make sure it happens at the end of the run.
