Ohkay. So. I ran the game and it was pretty fun! (I lost by only one vote!) But we had some issues and ideas for improvement. First, 51 territories is indeed way too many. Halfway through setup we decided to use 15 territories in 5 regions of 3 each. The smaller game was very interesting and it allowed you lots of room to mess with other candidates' plans. It works quite a bit better. We kinda halfassed population distribution but probably something like one each of 12-4 and then six 3s would work well, with the fundraising tiers being 10-12, 7-9, 4-6, and 3. Second, fundraising is too powerful, by which I mean, staying in one place and raising funds for a month straight is an uncounterable winning move. You shouldn't ever be able to raise funds in the same state more than once. Since that causes memory issues, we decided each state has an "emblem" that you get for raising funds there, and if you have the state's emblem, you can't raise funds there but they're considered 1 closer to you when voting comes around. Third, moderate positions are too good. There's no disadvantage to choosing all 3s and 4s, and because of the mechanics for advertising, there's a LOT of reason to be all 3s and 4s. One possible fix is to prestat candidates to make sure none of them are super-moderate. Another is to make more extreme candidates have more efficient fundraising (adding 1 to the 3d6 roll for every point away from center, ie, 5s and 2s give +1 each, 6s and 1s give +2 each). Fourth, it's too hard to "read" the map and see how well you're doing. What would be really nice is if each candidate had flags or markers or whatever, and at the beginning of each month you do a mock vote, putting the winning candidate's flag on each state, so you can instantly see which states are "yours", where you can raise funds safely, and where you can most effectively attack to swing large numbers of votes away from an opponent. We didn't end up using debates, negative advertising, random events, or anything like that. Monthly random events would be a nice addition though. Things like, for this month a particular region pays out more, or for this month a particular region is influenced easier so all d6s have +1 there, or this region's polling is inaccurate so all their Red opinions move 1 closer to Liberal or whatever. And one of the monthly events could be a debate, as long as it plays a lot quicker than whatever I was thinking when I suggested that one houserule. Anyway it's a fun game! And I hope it only gets better from here! EDIT: Oh by the way we used the multiple success rule and it works pretty well, though it's really annoying when you drop a cool mil on advertising in a region and then the very next turn someone follows you in and counters it with their own million to swing the opinions all the way back.

Here are some house rules I was planning on implementing when I ran it. Since you've been thinking about the game longer than I have, maybe you know better ideas or think I shouldn't use these? Anyway, comments appreciated (and if it's because of one of my alterations that the game didn't work it wouldn't be fair to you!). 1. Population. There are 50 population chits which are distributed randomly to states. 1x15, 1x14, 1x13, 1x12, 1x11, 2x10, 3x9, 4x8, 5x7, 6x6, 7x5, 8x4, 10x3. Fundraising in 11-15 gives 2x, 7-10 gives 1.5x, 4-6 gives 1x, and 3 gives 0.5x. 2. Stances. There are 10 chits of each possible stance (ie, Red 6) which are drawn randomly for each state. It isn't rolled. This ensures a more divided country which makes for a more interesting battleground. 3. Home states. Each candidate starts in a different state (of population 9 or below). That state's stances are initially set to the candidate's stances, no matter what those stances are (though during the game they can change just like any other state's). 4. Regions. There are 9 of them. 5. Debates. At the beginning of the 4th, 5th, and 6th months, there's a debate. Starting from the new first player, each candidate assigns a die to one of the issues (red, white, or blue), to negative advertising against another candidate, or to positive image advertising. Once each player has assigned 3 such dice, all of them are rolled; if a candidate has no dice in a category, they get a value of 2 automatically. Image dice can cancel any one negative die of equal or lesser value pointed towards you (so lets say I got a 5 on my image die and there's a 4 negative at me; both are removed). Negative dice can cancel any one issue die of equal or lesser value of the target's (so lets say, despite my image advertising, there's still a negative 3 pointing at me. It can cancel my white 3, but not my blue 4). Finally, remaining image dice (and automatic 2s) influence each state as if they were advertising (but a state can't move more than 1 on each issue, and if two candidates try to influence a state in both directions on an issue, neither works). Then play resumes as normal. 6. Ties. When it's time to elect, if a state is equidistant from two candidates, it entirely abstains, no matter how many votes it would've cast otherwise.

It sounds pretty interesting. The only issue I could see now is that it might take a while to play (24 turns per person), even though it looks like each turn plays quickly. Of course, there's also not really a penalty for having a similar stance as an opponent.. and you're also not allowing smear campaigns and negative advertising (or, for that matter, positive image advertising that isn't focused on an issue). There doesn't seem to be any good way to interact with other players, at the very least. All you can do is try to advertise their power base away from them, and this (especially) is the kind of game where you want to be political. I might make a prototype and run it at my local Gamers' Guild and get some feedback for you on how it plays.

You can zip using Concrete Shot. I've done it but it's very hard and probably not really controllable. Here's a video on GameTrailers of someone zipping using (Concrete Man's) Concrete Shot. EDIT: You can also use disappearing blocks but it's a lot harder to get those in the correct place to do a through-the-wall since, y'know, you can't move them.

The physics of the game seem very close to 5's. If I was making a romhack of this game on NES I'd start there. I'm trying for a good Galaxy Man and Splash Woman time. I had Splash Woman's #1 a while back but I've fallen pretty far to #7. The new tech is really hard to pull off... EDIT: Since Bisqwit hasn't seen the game in action yet, I imagine a lot of people aside from him haven't either. Here's some nice video of what I personally think is the best in the classic series: Arino of Gamecenter CX playing A fast but not perfect run (4 seconds slower than me, 14 seconds slower than #1) through Galaxy Man's stage, showing off the time attack mode and the supercool master weapons A fairly slow run (12 seconds slower than me, 16 seconds slower than #1) of Splash Woman by someone who doesn't understand gravity or how to dodge enemy shots

I see on the Megaman 9 topic that you don't much care for the soundtrack because of its similarity to 5's (though that's probably why I like it so much myself, personally). Have you had the chance to actually play the game or see videos of it being played yet? What's your opinion on that, and do you think other companies should follow in Capcom's footsteps making "new classic" games?

It still baffles me why hacks and cheats aren't accepted because "the game must be real", "played with authentic hardware", "familiar to the audience", and then all concentration and work on this game go to the broken PAL version which doesn't have the same physics as the REAL GAME.

There isn't a difference. What you are wishing for is "calmly watches the cutscenes" which is NOT entertaining because everyone who cares has seen the cutscenes already. HOW someone ignores the cutscenes can be called into question, sure, but complaining about one particular method of doing so is like complaining about wobbling in TASes - some people think it's cool (because it's only possible in TAS), some people hate it (because it looks stupid).

After you unlock every stage you can set which stages are on/off for Random, and you can also turn on Auto-Random. So you can only turn on the one stage you want and then set it to auto-random and it'll do what you want.

I really like this game but I have no help to offer, sorry. It's on Virtual Console now, so people even outside of Japan can play it legally.

Calling Hu-Go "excellent" is a bit of a stretch. Both Ootake and (my personal favorite) Mednafen have savestate and movie recording/playback, and, more importantly, run more than 2 or 3 games, and run them without significant graphics and sound errors. A lot of the best PCE games are shooters, but there are quite a few platformers or other genre games that it would be very nice to see attacks of (like the Wonderboy series).

Why am I called racist for understanding and recognising differences between Western and Japanese game studios? It's a well-understood difference. Read this article. "Flaws" like "being able to skip the story" and "different graphical experiences for different users" are unique to Western games. A lot of people like Western games. I don't. Why does that make me racist? Anyway, whether or not I like Western games doesn't matter, since the complaints in the first post were about elements of Western game design and not about decisions made by speedrunners.

Don't fault the player for the faults of the game. Both of your examples are from PC-land, and are Western games no less, and both of these add up to a very different mentality than our console-and-Japanese focus over here. You want to follow the story in Half-Life? That's a first - most people just want to stack doors on people's heads and shoot them while they don't notice and keep talking, so that's what you get. You want to look at good graphics? Well, I'm sorry, but the lack of standardisation of hardware (and effort by developers) means the game looks like crap at low settings, which are the only settings anyone who doesn't have a spare $5000 every 6 months can manage. These are not faults of the speedrunners. If they are faults (and in my opinion they are) then the blame rests entirely with the Western studios who make the games.

Oh hey there's a part II now. I got 23 on my first pass and 31 abusing color hints... but there are still a lot that I _should_ know (34? 40? 11??), eh I really wish I had an answer sheet... EDIT: For those who want spoilers, these are my 31 answers.

After 50 hours of Brawls.. we got all characters, all stages, all assists. There's still a lot of missing music - we only have 200 tracks - but maybe half of what's there is really awesome, and luckily there's a menu where you can turn off bad songs so. The load times and lag are both annoying... Subspace Emmisary is really fun. It's like a Kirby game. It's great. Zelda is a LOT better - in Melee Shiek-only was the way to be but now Zelda-only is really powerful. Gannondorf and Samus are worse (why did they need to be nerfed if they were already not good?). Jigglypuff's rest is worse but her other moves are better so she's still playably good. Fox and Captain Falcon were both toned down, which is nice, and Kirby and Ness were both given very nice boosts. A lot of repeat characters play differently which is good and it mixes things up a lot - most people are changing their mains. Even 'repeat' characters like Ike, Lucas, Wolf, Toon Link, etc are very good and interesting takes. And Snake is a fun and playable character even if Sonic's really not. Right now I'm still learning the game but Ike is really fun to play - his range and power make up for his lack of speed and the invincibility and armor/immortal on his B attacks mean I don't need to worry about dodge/block much. Metaknight, Wario, and Dedede are all disappointments which is sad. And I don't know what to think of Lucario yet - I liked Mewtwo who was definitely bottom-tier in Melee and he inherits from that but is also a lot better in a lot of ways, but he's still hard to use so I don't know whether he'll end up in the middle or near the top yet. The stages, now that they're all unlocked we can turn off the bad ones (Norfair, New Pork City, Unknown Planet, etc) - like 3/4 are really good, and a few are really, really fun to do. All in all I really like the game. It doesn't seem like much more than an upgrade to Melee, but that's all anyone ever wanted anyway, and Subspace Emmisary is worth the price of admission by itself.

After having played it for a few hours, I agree, the game is really good. Ness and Kirby were improved to still-not-as-good-as-in-the-first-game-but-now-playable, Lucas is awesome, Luigi is even better, King Dedede is the best heavy character ever, Metaknight is really fun (but Pit not so much), Ike is much better than Marth or Roy ever were, etc. Bad things: Some of the stages have significant load times (on the order of 15-20 seconds, but most load instantly), some characters' Final Smashes are worthless while others instantly win the match (I want them all to be about as good as Metaknight's..), a lot of the new items/levels make matches really swingy (but there's more control over the rules so tournament play is not only possible but explicitly allowed for), and Sonic's special moves are all really horrible (but he's still good because his normals rock). Haven't unocked many people yet though.
