In this particular case it's because if everyone is level 5 I will get a game over when I learn L5 Death in the Ancient Library (next dungeon).

63 minutes. This goes until the destruction of Karnak. Note: Butz dies and remains dead because I made an error in EXP calculation. If he's alive, the whole party goes to level 5. If he's dead, he stays at 3 while everyone else goes to 5. In the optimum case (following the battle strategy outlined in my corrections posts), he, Lenna, and Galuf will go to 4 while Faris goes to 5. New bosses: http://www.geocities.com/boco_xlvii/06-LiquidFlame.zip http://www.geocities.com/boco_xlvii/07-IronClaw.zip Now, I only need two living party members to kill Byblos.. and I only have one Phoenix Down.. so I guess I'm set for the next two bosses as well.

This is the most appropriate topic in which to say this.. I just plaued about 12 hours of X8. If it does not win game of the year, I will be sorely disappointed. This is, so far, the greatest CAPCOM game I have ever played (possible exception for the Tenchi wo Kurau series).

Actually, the paper is about western (in particular, American and French) imitation of Japanese "style", but it will end up mostly as defining what is and is not "Japanese animation" and I'm pretty sure the conclusion will be that the distinction has lost its usefulness, especially with the advent of such hard-to-classify works as exist above, along with Korean works and Japanese works that aren't stylistically the same as most other anime (like Mamoru Oshii's stuff). I just want a lot of people's opinions on how to define "Japanese animation" and why it is a distinct category so I can mention all of those criterion and their usefulness. Robotech takes the animation from three unrelated Japanese anime and splices them together with a completely original plot. I don't know how else to describe it or even anything else that's even remotely similar. Maybe like if a Kingdom Hearts movie came out, but all of the animation was from the original Disney movies and TV shows, just recut in such a way that the new story made sense with it all.

So you would draw the line where? Or is it a sliding scale? For example.. all of the staff (writing, storyboarding, animation, etc) on Big O II is Japanese, but it was funded by Americans and produced for an American audience. Now, the same for Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, except the production staff and voice acting is now American, but the writing, direction, animation, is Japanese, and is based on a Japanese novel. (No Japanese dub exists) Robotech is an American rewrite of a Japanese series. Dual Masters is an entirely Japanese implementation of an American concept, using American funding. So.. "the more Japanese, the better"? Which of these is Japanese? Or is the distinction meaningless?

Yeah, the Japanese terms "manga" and "anime" are inclusive. Even Tom & Jerry is anime in Japan. But is there a difference? Is it valid to make a distinction? For you, it's about pacing and style. So what about Samurai Jack - is that Japanese?

Not quite. There is a specific list of stats that increase at specific levels. Every stat that isn't "forced" to increase has a 50% chance to increase. The list is on GameFAQs in the larger "Character Guide" which is actually an algorithms guide.

So I'm writing this paper.. and I want people's definitions of "Japanese animation", specifically how to differentiate it from other "kinds" of animation, if even such a distinction exists or is possible to make. Some things to think about: Batman: the Animated Series - the pilot was animated in Japan, but the rest of the show in the US Batman Beyond - animated by Sunrise (the same Japanese studio responsible for Gundam and Cowboy Bebop), but written in America Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust - animated by Madhouse (Japanese studio that did Pitaten, X, Hajime no Ippo, etc), but released first in America The Big O II - produced by the same team that did the first Big O, but made for an American audience and funded by Americans Duel Masters - concepted, written, and funded by Americans, but produced and released in Japan Robotech - written by Americans, but all animation is taken from unrelated Japanese works Transformers - originally written and animated in America (and occasionally Canada), but the current US-marketted version was written and animated in Japan Studio Ghibli films - written and produced in Japan, but for a global audience and in a non-Japanese style; funded by Disney Teen Titans, Garage Kids, Totally Spies, etc - shows with little to no Japanese staff but which try to imitate Japanese "style" Which of the above is Japanese, and why? Or, is there no such thing as "Japanese animation" as a separate category? EDIT: Also, manga. "Rising Stars of Manga" and other Amerimanga VS Korean manwha VS Japanese manga.. is there a difference, and if so, what?

Not at all, that's just an easy way to beat him. Anyway, the best ways involve mixing a Kiss of Blessing to make him Berserk, then nullifying physical attacks (Knight using !Mamori does fine, as does calling Golem every round or two). After that you can kill him however you want. He's the only boss in the game immune to L5 Death...

Haste (FAST) doubles Hit%, which usually doubles the number of hits (you get an extra hit every 32, unless you're a Monk - Monks get extra hits every 16). INT does nothing. Some of your gain rates are wrong. Fighter/Knight does get STR at every level, as does Black Mage/Wizard get INT, but Monk/Supermonk gets VIT and Thief/Ninja gets LUK. Some stat raises are predetermined. A stat that isn't forced to raise always has a 50% chance of raising, which should be easy to manipulate if you really want stats. Monk's attack power and absorb reset to the level-based formula every time they gain a level; you need to check the appropriate weapon/armor screen or the status screen to force them back to equipped values. As the level-based values are usually higher, you want to equip a ProRing or Ribbon just before a level and then never check the Status or Armor screens ever again. But that's irrelevant here.

I just watched the latest vid and noticed you missed a very important shortcut in the Wind Shrine. In the room before the Crystal room, you take the long road, while there's actually a hidden passage through the wall at the beginning. I'm talking about the room containing the first boss. You can save yourself a lot of walking time and a full encounter that way.
Thanks! That's another big addition to the "mistakes made" list that whoever does the final version should be aware of.

Also, this movie should definitely have some extra explaining text boxes. It's hard to follow, as it's Japanese, but my main concern is the fact that all sorts of cool strategies are being executed without me knowing what the hell's going on. Like that Ice 3 thing with which you beat Medusa. How did you pull that off?
Very definitely explanatory subtitles would be nice. Either subs for the story, the strategy, or both.
Omega wrote:
Are you planning on beating Omega? [...] And what about Shinryuu and Necron?
I'm only doing the first world for now, because I know optimal strategies for all of the bosses. Also, depending on the best way to handle a few second-world bosses some events in the first-world need to be done differently (getting certain equipment, mastering certain abilities, capturing a Garkimasra or other powerful enemies, etc). Remember, this is a trial run.

finally, what kind of movies which I can submit this site...? (Sorry, but I could'nt understand about Mr.Bisqwit's opinions(sentences).)
You can submit anything that you think is entertaining. It just might not be published if people don't think it is entertaining. Bisqwit said that he prefers revised or improved versions of already-published movies rather than new movies. This keeps the overall quality of the movies high and results in fewer files for him to host (which saves on bandwidth).

Tiles that force encounters, but once the encounter is over return you to the same space (so not like caves).

Woha! Nice glitch indeed. Why wasn't it used for the last run as it was known?
I knew about it before even making my first version of the run. I didn't want to use it because it's not a "fair" playing of the game - I was more interested in how to exploit the level system and the shortest human-possible path than glitching the game to assure easy victory. You can also use it on the world map to walk through "spiked" tiles.

It's just left+right at the same time. You can also use it to jump over the Saria river. And you can use up+down at the same time to use elevators about twice as fast. This is known.

Hey, this trial is looking great so far. But do you think you could start throwing in some save-states to immediately load to the newer stuff, since even at frame-skipping at maximum it takes a bit of time to get to the end of the video... ^_^

There's Thief ability Keikai (Caution; prevents back attacks) and Ninja ability Senseikougeki (Preemptive Strike; increases chance of party striking first).. but nothing that I know of changes the encounter rate itself. EDIT: 53 minutes. This one goes until being thrown in prison. It also handles Walse -> Galura differently than the 47 minute version did.

I know that's how it works in FF1, but in FF6 (and I assume in FF5, though my experience here shows otherwise) one of four possible monster formations is chosen at random from the possible list each time you enter the encounter / switch locations / encounter a black screen / whatever the trigger is. But it might just be that there's some list of numbers 1..4 somewhere that the game looks at to decide which of the 4 formations to give you, whcih would suck unless there's still some way to control it. Anyway I know how to manipulate luck during a battle and how to change the chance of running but not how to change what you fight. Any help would be very much appreciated... ^__^

The site was made for entertaining movies that push the game engines to their limits. Speed is usually the goal but many movies use other goals (like the 2P-played-alone games and the 1-item Metroid NES run). If it is entertaining, it should be fine to submit.

47 minutes. Magisa and Galura down. It's probably faster (and less annoying) to avoid the poisoned plants rather than using an inn afterwards. I incorrectly assumed that the getting-on-Hiryuu event gave full healing like every other boss's after-event has until now. From here, Switch Faris back to thief Get 2000 gil See the king Go to Meteor Go to Karnak Buy Ice Rod Go to Prison Buy more Ice Rods Steamship Kill Liquid Flame (2x rods) Learn Deathclaw Kill Iron Claw (2x rods) Edit: Geuh, the see-the-king event is optional.. which means I need to get the 2000 gil before killing Galura. So I have to redo the past few minutes... ah well.

..can someone who is good at luck manipulation (or figuring out the code of the game) please tell me how to manipulate what I encounter in a random battle? Because as far as I can tell it's decided by where you encounter the enemy after a predetermined number of steps and chosen from a list in such a way that it's always the same formations in the same order.. EDIT: I'll fight Tatu x2 + Gatlings because I can't get a Tatu x2. This information would be very helpful for the final version though.

Yes, but Red Mage can cast two spells per turn. But anyway there are better ways to spend 1159 ABP. Lots of !Hanatsu (!Release) attacks are deadly. !Chougou (!Mix) is a must. !Yobidasu (!Call) means no MP for any Summon spell in the game. Of course, !Nageru (!Throw) is essential, and Nitouryuu (2-sword Style) would be nice to have but is expensive. !Midareuchi (!Scattershot) would be nice but it costs a lot of ABP and Archer is generally useless except for it. !Mahouken (!Sword) and !Zeninage (!Cointoss) are also very nice. Casting strong black and white magic generally wouldn't help, even if strong black magic will be learned for !Mahouken. Anyway the most useful attacks are a combination of blue magics and !Chougou. Manipulate levels until L5 Death. EDIT: Actually Blue is all you need. Even level: L2 Old, L5 Death Odd level: Black Shock, L2 Old, L5 Death

..and double the enemies, which take longer to spawn than to kill. 1P is faster. 2P just looks better.
