Emulators aren't perfect. Such a situation would quite often desync due to variations between how an emulator works and how the console works. It's the same reason most movies desync if you try to port them between emulators or between emulator versions.

While that list is mostly correct, remember that there were quite a few changes between the Japanese and US versions of most of the games.

Famtasia doesn't emulate the FDS wavetable properly. Since you have the ROM, play it a bit in VirtuaNES (go to a town, talk to people, cast magic, die, etc) to hear the correct sounds.

i'm confused... What about 6?
You said that 7 used basically the same system as 6.. and I was sayign that it was completely different because it ws character-based and not item-based. In 7, you can level up skills using one character, then drop those skills onto another character that has a much lower level, and, for example, kill every boss in the game with a level 1 party if you felt like it. Without having too much trouble. Sure, such things are also possible in FF5 (low-level record is 2/2/3/3 that I know of), but you still can't change a character's skillset like that like you can in 7, which I don't like.

You hate FF7? It's just like a much better version of FF3 with better graphics. The esper system was changed to the materia system. It is still very similar, but better and easier to understand. Game is awesome.
Um, sorry, but in 6, the characters learned the magic, the magicite didn't learn the magic. I didn't like 7 or 8. My favorites are 5, 9, 3, and 6 in that order (not counting 11 or the un-numbered ones).

Why didn't you get the first Magic Container before going to Parapa? Actually, you should have gotten the Fairy spell and Downstab already, but..
i dont think that your faster when getting the hammer and downstab and fairy before castle 1. missing the attack level ups of castle makes you slower in getting the hammer.
It's faster. I timed both ways through. v1 of my run got the Hammer after Parapa and before Midoro, and took a few minutes longer than the other way around.

i did ...
No, you didn't. You took the traditional route ^_- There's one that's faster by about 30 sec to a minute. It involves walking on the ceiling.

up+a is faster but it looks not very entertaining.
It is only useful in three places (after the 1st magic container, after the 2nd magic container, and after Parapa), too, so it's not that big of a deal.

Okay, so I'm finally watching the run.. here are my thoughts, in chonological order (but without timestamps, sorry). Why didn't you get the first Magic Container before going to Parapa? Actually, you should have gotten the Fairy spell and Downstab already, but.. Why did you get the Candle? Why didn't you kill an extra enemy so that the statue levels your attack to 3? Why did you talk to Error in Ruto? In Death Mountain, there's a point where you fight but don't kill a Goriya, then fight and kill a Daira that drops a P-bag. Why didn't you kill the Goriya so it would drop the P-bag instead? When you're about to get the hammer, why do you level Magic to 3? ..and maybe this is a style issue, but why do you kill all the Octoroks and other small enemies but not the Myu? Why didn't you switch to the Fairy spell when you got it, so you didn't ahve to open the menu later? Why get the red bottle in Midoro Swamp? Why leech a blue bottle from a Bot if you get the red bottle from the Gleeok statue? Why visit the King's Tomb? Why get the Child & Reflex spell before getting the Boots? Why get Upstab? (& if you get it at all, why not on the way out of town?) In Maze Island, it is always faster to walk the long way around compared to fighting. Why did you get a key, then go outside for a red bottle, instead of using Fairy again, then getting the bottle (or preferably, leaving to get the Child & Reflex)? Why do you get so many keys in the Temple on the Sea? Why do you get the Spell spell and Magical Key? Why do you get the Cross? You did not use the fastest route in the Great Temple. You are not very aggressive against Dark Link, and you miss shots. Overall, you fight better than me, though. Oh, and this critique isn't including optimisation using UP+A.

I think the movie should be stopped at the earliest possible frame for the intended result. I think the timing should be done as most record sites do - from first input to when input ceases to become meaningful (EG from the first START button to when the axe is touched). So these times are not neccessarily in sync with one another, which makes it inconvenient. So the movie can have appended "blank frames" to help time easier, I suppose.

You have a much more than powerful enough computer to emulate at 100% or more with no problems. You just need to configure everything right and use the right plugins.

Of course, that also makes people more competitive, always trying not just to lower the time, but also to lower the number of re-records with better playing skill (and I thought the point was to get over real-time skill!).
Quite a few people view higher numbers as better because of the refinement put into the video, possibly at single-frame precision for some portions. I just like to have the number around as reference. Both extremely low and extremely high rerecord counts are interesting to me, because both show a lot of dedication and time, albeit in different ways.

Yeah, but "CastleVania 3" wasn't numbered in Japan, it was titled differently ("Legend of Demon Castle" rather than "Demon Castle Dracula"). And it's arguable when Zelda 3 happens. Dan Owsen, who translated it, though it happened before, so that's why it's called "A Link to the Past" in the US, but Morimoto said in an interview that it happens after. The timeline is so mesed up taht it's better to just enjoy the games rather than try to work out how - or even if - they are related.

We call that a "prequel".
Does a prequel usually have a higher number, though? The Japanese game is called "Solomon's Key 2: Coolmint Island Rescue Operation".

The one where the last brick is broken sooner. The time is measured from first imput to when input ceases to affect the game in a meaningful way.

It's the sequel to Solomon's Key, but it happens before. I'd love to see it! Especially unconventional methods of solving some of the puzzles.

I use a Gamepad Pro USB.. it's basically a PSX controller but with a crappy circular thing instead of four directional buttons or a D-pad.. so I'd prefer a SNES, PSX, or PS2 controller.

There are 49 Fields, as far as I know, and most have multiple exits. The numbers go all the way up to 57, but I can't figure out how to access some of them.

Since I don't think I'll have time to do any full-game runs of this, probably one of the best (yet sadly least-known) games ever made, I'm organising it as a challenge. The game is broken into 49 Fields, numbered 0-57 (9, 13, 19, 27, 32, 39, 44, 53, and 54 don't exist - or at least I have no idea how to get there). Most Fields have multiple exits. The challenge is to find the quickest path to each exit. The game automatically records play, so no rerecording emulator is needed; simply use savestate as usual, then record the level when playing back the recording in-game. I'll submit a preliminary time for Fields 0 and 1 soon..

..there's an Umihara Kawase game for NES? I thought there was only the SNES and PSX ones.. Anyway, because the game has built-in recording capabilities, it has built-in rerecord (record a level in game, use savestates in the level, etc.. when you play it back, record the demo playing for distribution along with your save data).. so I don't even have to wait for a stable rerecording emulator. But then again, the game is hard to play prettily.. I always just mess around ^_^;;; So I really shouldn't go near this game.. >.>

I'd prefer to see a max-level run (you can't call it 100% without gettng all chips, so..) over any other speedrun of the game but that's just my opinion. You could even segment it by saving between levels and then optimising the levels individually.
