I didn't time the loads (I have class in a bit), but I guess it's about 90 seconds or so of load time so far. There's also a bit of inefficiency with keys - I figured out too late that I can shave off 30 seconds to a minute by bringing an extra key from a different Palace. Being able to Fairy through doors is a good thing, but it sucks when you still have to get keys to get items.. and a Fairy can't carry keys through a door, so it just gets worse.

I have a subtitled video of Gradius being completed in one life, killing all but 16 enemies, etc., etc., and which was originally recorded off a real console before being digitised & edited. It's pretty good, and there's no problems reading the subs while the action is going on. In a slower game (like Zelda 2, especially the Japanese version which has load screens), the subtitles wouldn't interrupt the action at all. Subtitles allow the player to explain why certain actions were taken, allow timestamps to be put on key events (I have a few Halo videos that timestamp events), give little-known facts about the game or glitches you exploit or why what you did is the best way, etc.. It adds a lot to the experience. At the very least, a text file distributed with each movie giving the game name, region, player name and contact info, and a short description of the run / commentary by the player or other players, etc., would be nice.

Pressing right/left at the same time also has interesting effects in Zelda 2. Because there are a few Japanese pages that discuss them and how to effectively use the glitch for faster times, they obviously work in the game. The Japanese do it by using a joystick (= plugged into the expansion port) and Controller I (= hardwired into the console with Controller II) at the same time. I think once I'm satisfied with my run of Link no Bouken (which will probably be the 3rd or maybe even 4th-5th time through), I'll make a run that abuses the glitch to the fullest, which should save considerable time (skip all action sequences, jump the river at Saria, teleport inside palaces, etc).

Started on version 2. Fairy makes things very much faster ^_^ Levels are 8-3-1. Death Mountain takes about 15 seconds longer because of my lower attack level, but the time is more than recovered by having Fairy early.

Is this true of all spiked tiles? I always used this in Disvalley, but I never tried anywhere else. I know it doesn't work in caves or on the big bridge (which is counted as a cave, because the entrance and exit aren't the same square).

I wonder, because VirtuaNES can convert to AVI, if he won't use his tracker to host the Torrent for an AVI of it anyway? (or someone else could host it, or you could use a public tracker) For the benefit of those too lazy to download the emulator, find the ROM, and watch the movie? It's an amazing movie.

Famtasia v6 Tester supports the FDS wavetable correctly, but can't record ;_;

You will need to grab all 4 magic containers anyways. Plus, you need to grab both the 3rd magic container and the Child before the old man forks over Reflect spell, which you need to kill the boss. You do need the boots to get to 5th Palace.
It's that the Child is really far off of the path to the palace. The Magic Container is on the way there.. so if I just go to the Palace, get the Boots, get the Child on my way back to town, I think that's best. EDIT: For those of you who have the Zelda 2 FDS image, here is the video up to the 2nd Magic Container using the old path. PLEASE give comments and suggestions. I'm going to make multiple versions to increase efficiency, but I still want the first complete version to be entertaining. I'm thinking of never using the sword unless the hit connects (which should be easy), doing more aerial maneuvers and artful dodges (you can see a few - there are parts I have recorded that aren't in this that have better ones), leeching EXP by forcing P-bags to drop more often (all of the drops in the video you see here are natural, or leeched from potion drops (pots become bags with a frame or three different timing)), and attacking quicker by using rising instead of falling crouch-slashes for standing enemies (= about 2x attack speed). Any other suggestions or advice? Also, should I delete the default _AAA save to create a new save (wastes 11 seconds), or should I just use the _AAA save? Because that's outside the 'true time', I think it looks better with a name other than _AAA. Alternatively, a save file could be included with the FMV that has a blank BOCO file instead of the _AAA one... would that be better?

That route IS very much faster. EDIT: About 3 minutes and 18 seconds faster! And that's not counting time saved walking! But at a cost of about 700 EXP, which can hopefully be made up by the late statue-sealing. I would love to see your video. The only other Zelda 2 run I've seen is one VMV of a 100% completion run in an hour 50. I guess I'll also post my incomplete video somewhere, but not many people have the Japanese Zelda 2, so I don't know how much good it will do. Besides, this will give me a chance to clean up some things near the beginning. The main point of getting the Candle is for Death Mountain, and as you say, getting Fairy before doing Parapa is faster, so there's no reason to get the Candle except for Disvalley, at which point all the screens can be avoided by timing random battles. YAY REMAKING VIDEO~! Oh, is there a Heart Container limit for Downstab or Upthrust? And is there ever a situation where Jump can't be substituted for Upthrust (getting it would take about 30 seconds extra)? Also, what do you suggest about Maze Island? Should I grab the Magic Container, grab the Boots, grab the Child, get Reflect, kill Carock? Or is there a quicker way?

By slow I mean I waste 11 seconds entering the name "BOCO" (that's including about 9 seconds of load time) instead of just choosing the AAA file (which is 1-1-1 with 000 deaths, so I could've just chosen it - as you say, turboed start - to amount to the same thing). I could always rerecord the thing and use the AAA file, but it's only 11 seconds, which you can just subtract from the total time. The Twin Galaxies rules say timing starts when you can first control the character (about 29 seconds into the video as it stands), so the name entry is meaningless anyway.

This includes 34 seconds of load time that aren't in the US version and me being slow on the name entry screen. So as you can see, levelling takes about the same ammount of time as in the US version, but because you can choose what to level up, you can min-max. Hopefully I'll get enough EXP to get Magic to 5 or so during Midoro, so I can cast Fairy twice to avoid going out of the way for keys.

Maxed attack halfway through Death Mountain? Is this version significantly different than the US version because I don't see how that is even remotely possible.
The Japanese version's levelling system is significantly different. Enemies give vey different experience points and every time you level up, you can level in ANY category. In essence, it's Link levelling and you choose which stat he gains, not the stat levelling. So there's no option to skip a level, and levels get increasingly hard to get. The first few levels are easy (I think it's something like 50, 100, 150, 300, 300, 700, 700), so maxing Attack early shouldn't take longer than that (It should be possible to actually have 8-3-1 or so by the Hammer if you get a few 200 or 50 P-bags from enemies). The drawback in the Japanese version is that if you ever get a Gamew Over, all of your levels reset to the lowest level you have. So if you have 8-3-1 and you die, you get 1-1-1. If you have 5-4-3 and you die, you get 3-3-3. In a Time Attack, of course, you never die, so the drawback disappears and you can minmax without penalty.
kopernical wrote:
I thought you just needed the eight magic containers to get the Thunder spell. I could be wrong, though.
If this is true, skipping New Kasuto for the Spell spell and Magic Key will shave considerable time. The Great Palace only needs 3-4 keys from other palaces and those locks can be circumvented easily with Fairy. I always thought you needed all of the magic containers and Spell.. but I guess I'm wrong. I'll just work up to that point and attempt to get Thunder, and if I can't with just the magic containers, I'll get Spell and the Magic Key.

I'm going to run Link no Bouken, because the elevators work, unlike in Adventure of Link. The sound is messed up sometimes, but it's still very livable. Now.. obviously I'm going to max out Attack before touching Life or Magic, especially since the "lose uneven levels when you die" thing is invalidated by, you know, not dying. I can get maxed Attack by somewhere in the middle of Death Mountain without going out of the way. Then comes Magic in order to have lower costs for Fairy. But here's a descision that should be made very early in play: Should I get the Candle? It takes about a minute and a half longer to get the Candle, but it would make all of the caves so~o much easier to play through for me without rerecording 1800 times per room (to make it look like I can see perfectly). I think a game without the Candle would be harder to watch, too, because the viewers at home can't see what's going on in the caves. But without the Candle is much, much more impressive. The Cross is another matter entirely. I'm going to ditch the Cross entirely and use Spell to reveal invisible enemies. (as far as I know, Spell and all 4 Magic containers are needed to get Thunder (is this correct?), and if I get Spell I might as well get the Key) So, Candle or no Candle? And any suggestions on what people would like to see, or alternate paths through dungeons (other than Great Palace)?

Okay, the elevators work. As far as I know, the emulation is good enough to play through without difficulties. The left-right bug still happens, but I'll be using a joystick so it can't occur.. and the sound is still messed up (the FDS wavetable sounds aren't emulated properly, so some sound effects sound weird). But the game works! And it's fun!! Okay, so.. making a new topic!

Famtasia has good support for FDS games. Otherwise we couldn't have played the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2.
Do you have the Link no Bouken image? Could you try loading it and seeing if your version of Famtasia works, and it's just mine that's broken? I don't know if I have the latest release. I get "Unknown opcode 33 at ECEE".

I just tried the Japanese version, and Famtasia refuses to even load it (it's an FDS game). VirtuaNES runs it just fine. The European version is identical to the US version except for the speed difference. Interesting bugs in Famtasia's emulation: pressing both left & right at the same time breaks the game (until you walk in a straight line for a full screen), save-stating in a sidescrolling part and then loading breaks the game (until you go outside), and using the elevators in Death Mountain breaks the game (permanently). So I'm thinking of doing a VirtuaNES run of the Japanese version....

If it freezes, I guess it can't be done in Famtasia. And I wouldn't want to do something that others are doing.

If people are doing it already, I guess I won't. Well, except for Zelda 2, which apparently doesn't work in Famtasia (I just loaded a from-save game and went to Death Mountain, and you're right, the elevators are broken). I'd really like to do Zelda 2 - it's one of the games on the list that I know very well (and the only real research I'd need to do to do the run is seeing if I can ever warp ahead using the "on top of the palace" glitch). Kyatto Ninden Teyandee I can also add to the list, and Bubble Bobble, but if they're broken, I guess it can't be done in Famtasia.

Crappy sound support in what way? - Batman and TMHT are on the submission-happily-accepted list aka. idea list, but you're right that Batman might be a little boring. I'm not so sure about TMHT.
If you're doing W&W, I'll gladly do W&W 2 (which is the easiest in the series) or W&W 3 (which will require me to do a lot of planning and make maps of everywhere) instead. I've seen the 17:06 video, and he doesn't always take the quickest path, so a sub-17 run is possible. But I just want to see it because I've speed-run the game before (without emulator/savestate/etc) and have been in a competition for the fastest time ^_^;; Famtasia's 20fps is annoying, but unless you need the extra timing, it's livable. Maybe it's just my version (5.10, from 00/04/01) but the sound support is horrible - none of the music sounds exactly right, and some games (like Zelda 2) are just totally messed up in both music and sound effects. You don't really notice it unless you have an NES to compare, but it's obvious for someone who plays the original games. Batman might be boring (unless I find a way to warp through walls), but it's an incredibly hard game that lends itself well to speed-runs. But I guess I'll stick it on a lower priority if people think it wouldn't be fun to watch. If anyone knows how to get Zelda 2 working, I'd love to try it.

(I'd also like to see a Hitler no Fukkatsu run under 17 minutes and a Rygar run at the correct speed, both of which I guess I could also try.. oh, and I'd like to have Famtasia not suck so much (by displaying only some frames, and having crappy sound support), or to use VirtuaNES or the like, but if people want FMV...) Anyway, Yo! Noid and Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru are the same game, but Hanamaru has infinitely better graphics. I've never played it, but the Japanese version of Zelda 2 also has slightly different graphics, different sound and music, and different experience values and a different level system.. but for Zelda 2 I could run either version.

I've always been amazed how complex and purposeful looking modifications can be done to a game by modifying only one or two bytes in the ROM, which is what Game Genie codes do.
This particualr feature was probably a debug mode disabled for the final release. There's a very similar debug mode in Mario Land 3 (Wario Land) for the GameBoy, and a debug mode in Rockman 5 can be accessed by changing a single byte as well (which is how the time trial competition ROM of Rockman 5 was created).

I told Morimoto about Genisto's new SMB3j movie. Here's what he replied.
参りました。脱帽です。 全部の面が抜かれてた。自分も試したけど 出来なかったこともかなりありました。
Unfortunately I can't quite figure out what he's saying.
"(I have been) defeated. I take off my hat (to that person). There are mistakes in very level. I also tried, but everything I couldn't do is also all here (in this video)." Phrases in parens are understood by context ^_^

How long did you try? It took me a few hundred tries to jump a wall in Zelda II in the Great Palace (which is one of the reasons I want to Time Attack the game, because jumping walls and abusing Fairy is possble).

The two biggest secrets cut in the US version are in Area 17 and Area 7. Only the Area 17 one can save you time, though.

Your link is broken. Maybe you shouldn't call it "Hitler.zip" ^_^
No, it's just Geo****ties. The workaround is to drag the link to the address bar or to C&P the link into the address bar. If you click the link, Geo****ties will think you're hotlinking from another site (whcih you are) and deny you access because you're not looking at ads.

Ah, it was the wrong one? Sorry. If it wasn't there, then I don't know where I found this. Here's the run: http://www.geocities.com/boco_xlvii/hitler.zip Famtasia 5.10 is required.. if you can't find it, I'll upload it, too. You should be able to figure out how to skip Area 9 from this video, of course. EDIT: Also, sdkess just got 17:58 on a clean run, and 18:47 on a run without A+B+START, both taped. If a real player gets within 10 seconds of a time attack.... :-þ

I have my hands on a Megaman Zero 2 speed run video, but no way to distribute it.. it will probably be Torrented, but that means either I run a tracker on my desktop machine, or on a friend's webserver, or I find a public tracker (or ask nicely to be put on someone's personal tracker). Is anyone interested in watching it, providing a tracker, or knows of any good public trackers for what will probably be a low-volume but hopefully permanently-seeded release? The trailer for the run is http://members.chello.nl/~g.panhuis/megazpeed/megamanzero-megazpeed.wmv, and just so everyone is clear, the run is by McBAIN, not me. I've never played MMZ2 (I own RMZ2, but they're slightly different), and I've never played it on Hard.
