Well, as long as a submission has an input file as well, it's OK. Because as long as some people watch the input file instead of AVI file, then they can say "Hey! Wait a minute!".

Do you think you can shave off 12 more minutes and make it a Ninety Minute Blitz?
If someone had told me 4 months ago that 1:42 was possible, I would have called them crazy. But 1:30? No. No! At least not without a whole ton of new tricks. Because nearly every battle in the entire run is OHKO, this run is nearing a theoretical lower bound. Whole sections would need to be chopped out in order to bring this time down any more. Possible Candidates: - Find a way to glitch around Snorlax without collecting flute (or, altnatively, glitch a flute into your inventory). If this were possible, it would save around 7 minutes, because Poké Tower could be skipped entirely. - Find a way to glitch around fake barriers in Victory Road. This would only save around 2 minutes, from not having to shove rocks around.
Heehee. I love it when a "perfect" submission is beaten thanks to new glitches. Note that we are glitching around snorlax, like he predicted.

Go me! I'm 25th for worst overall, 49th for worst entertainment and 32nd for worst technical. What's interesting is, this has positively affected me. I had been planning to make a second TAS of Tom and Jerry, which would be improved maybe 2 seconds (almost all on levels 8, 9 and 10). However, now that I know these movies are not as popular as I thought (I used to assume a 5.0 rating meant "average") I'll just work on other games.

That's what I meant. You get rock smash, and then go get them.

I am really having trouble deciding whether to work on Crystal Quest or Pokemon right now. Both runs would have astonishing end results.

Here's a thought for a new TAS: Catch Raikou, Suicune or Entei. They're all at level 40, and can be luck-manipulated, so it would be a good headstart compared to Graveler at level 25ish.

[sarcastic]Thank you for your relevant post.[/sarcastic] I think the run will be either 30 or 45 phases, more likely 45. I figure I'll map out the fastest route to all the crystals, then figure out what frames I should shoot at to take out enemies. I figured out a way to turn on a dime. Suppose at frame x you're going up, and need to go down. x: ^ x+1: ^> x+2: > x+3: \/> x+4: \/

Nevermind, then. But you haven't debunked the part about getting that mushroom in 1-1... yet.

It's harder to make a TAS of a 3D game. Compare Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64. SM64 has been improved by well over a minute. On the other hand, it's easy to slap together a run of SMB that's just 10-15 seconds worse than the best run. And, as has been said by others, Mupen is an unreliable emulator, as it has to use more power and have more controls. What game are you planning on TASing for the N64? N64 games are tricky to make TASes of, but they make more impressive results.

Here's a thought: Turn the Hammer Brother in 1-1 into an airship, so there's no trouble with him moving around and wasting time. As for 1-1, I think it might be faster to hit the first Koopa Troopa and throw his shell at the block with a mushroom. The current method... bothers me.

Actually, typing has been suggested. Even typing out the FAQ for tasvideos.org really fast. I imagine that once there's mouse control, the runs would go much faster due to copying and pasting some words.

Well, keep in mind that the shorter games will have a lot of walking into walls and even death in them. SMB3 will be like a well-oiled machine, but the other games will suck. So they will be much, much longer. In fact, expect to see several deaths in every game except SMB3.

Bah. All 4 is perfectly feasible, you just need to be freakishly smart. Many people here are freakishly smart. I might work on it if I can find a good dump ROM for SMB1. On a completely unrelated note, it would be fascinating to discuss the strange weather lately. My email address is chamale_ic@hotmail.com

I think it would be morbidly funny to list lowest entertainment value... But then, it does mock the authors. Still, the authors know that the rating is low. If we make it show only non-obseleted movies, then it might motivate authors to improve their movies.

I think 4 is best, if there is significant variation between the games. Because keep in mind that some games, I.E. Pokémon Red, are so glitchy in the original Japanese versions that they can be beaten in five minutes.

Here's a thought: Hit start, then hit it two frames later or w/e. As a result, you might be going in 1 or 2 games but not going in the rest. But it's cheap and not too entertaining. Other thoughts: In SMB and SMB2j, hitting left+right causes mario to moonwalk forward. What happens in the other 2? If there's no effect, than it might be a way to move slightly in one run, while not moving in another. Or, even better, it could be used to move in SMB and SMB2j while bossfighting in SMB2u and waiting in autoscrollers in SMB3. Obviously, the prioritized game will be SMB3. By "prioritized" I mean the important parts in SMB3 must override important parts in other games. This is because SMB3 will probably be the longest of the 3 runs. However, in autoscrolling parts it is likely the Mario will be "dragging the screen" while he runs in other games. As Juef said, going left in SMB2u will be hard. The levels where this is necessary are 1-1, 6-3 and 7-1, and to some extent 7-2. However, looking at 1-1, it is possible to go to the right instead of the left. This is almost certainly the better option, as SMB2u is medium-priority. In 6-3, it is also possible to go right. In 7-1, it is possible to stand still and make some progress, so left+right can be used.

Hmm... In RCR, what would happen if you held B while running? If nothing, than RCR and SMB1 would be interesting. Occasional segments of both being fast, occasional "some slowness" and occasional epileptic seizures on the part of one game. The fastest RCR is 8:10. while the best Mario is 5:00. So the focus would be on RCR (I.E, if something slows down the RCR run, but isn't necessary for the Mario run, it won't be done).

N008 question: What's a playaround? On another note, I think this could stay interesting for at least 30, if not 50, phases. New enemies keep popping up. At phase 25, there's an infuriating enemy I call "fido", because he looks like a dog head and follows you everywhere! However, when you're moving slow, you can fire a shot which stays there, like a mine, and blows up something following you.

He's not a weirdo, he just likes weird art. TASes are, arguably, weird art. No big difference.

Vote=VERY YES. Easily the best video I've ever seen on the site, or anywhere else. When it's published, it'll get a 10 rating from me. Comicalflop, I'd kill to watch the all-course video. Don't give up! The whole discussion about whether Comicalflop should keep making his video has reminded me of my Pokémon Red run: It's very tedious to make the video, but the end result is amazing. But no matter how hard you try, it will never be totally optimized. So just go for the shock value of getting one "pretty good" video with all the odd glitches. I'm definitely finishing the Pokémon run.

Cool! I can't paint at all, but the site has room for that, too. I wonder what I should send in?

I loved this game as a kid. My mom may have been one of the most 1337 people on the planet at this game (I think I am the first person ever to type that) and it was the first game I ever enjoyed watching someone else play. I'm delighted to find out it exists for GB. I'm going to start a run for it right away. There are 99 levels, but on the plus side, you can luck-manipulate where the crystals are, so the levels would be completed fairly quickly.
