vitality seeds & intellegence seeds SHOULD help your next level up but down, possibly an error in programming. What they actually do is lower it because the game decides your mp & hp increase based on how high your vitality & intelligence. If your stats are too high, you get bad level ups. So these should never actually be used in a TAS or actual game play unfortunately.
Interesting. I'm familiar with the GBC port of this game, and I never found this to be a problem. Did you try factoring in the following level-ups after the next one? In the GBC version, if Vit or Int don't take their proper effect at a level-up, they still will eventually. I watched this movie, and I'm voting yes because I have a soft spot for this game and thought it was neat to see it beaten so quickly, even though it's really boring to watch.

I'm sure there would be ways to modify the console hardware to allow for savestates and frame-precision playing, but I think that outputting keypress sequence files for them would be out of the question. They'd have to be recorded straight to AVI, and then none of us would be able to confirm that they're legit TASes as we can with emulator movies.

You think you'd still be having this debate if the name in question were "SHITHEAD" or something? Of course not, there'd be no contest, he'd be forced to change his name. Yet that may be an acceptable name on some other site. This is Bisqwit's site, he makes the rules.

I'm not voting in the poll, since I can't sit through this, but my vote is no. The run is of extremely low quality. When I saw this thread, I was like "Well, it's about time!" I have been waiting a long time for someone to put time and effort into this game. Unfortunately it looked there wasn't any put into this movie. 258 rerecords for over an hour of gameplay?

Could you possibly record a movie of that?

Dr. Mario creates some kind of seed when you first press start that determines every single pill sequence and level layout from there on out. Nothing can be manipulated. I imagine this has something to do with keeping the 2-player games identical.

Absolutely stunning. This is one of the best TASes I've ever seen.

I think the Config -> Game Genie button only emulates the Game Genie subsystem but doesn't let you add codes. You can add codes by going to NES -> Cheats, type the cheat into the "Name" box and then hit "Add game genie code" You can double click them on the list to enable or disable them. The wrong way door glitch works like this: When you enter a door, the "cutscene" will move you to the left or right a certain number of pixels. If you were, somehow, to enter the door farther into the door (past the normal entry point), Samus will still be moved the same number of pixels, but it will move you too far and cause you to wrap around to the other side of the screen. Being on the other side of the screen, the game will transition you to the room in the opposite direction than the door you entered. This only seems to work in vertically scrolling rooms where there are doors opposite of each other. It can't work without codes unless you're somehow able to get a horizontal boost farther into the wall while door glitching. If that were possible, this trick would be very easy to do. To get to Kraid with this trick, just bypass the red doors by using the wrong way glitch on the blue doors opposite of them.

You have to use the game genie codes specified on the description page for them to work. they are SSAEAI, EEXTTY, KAPGEI. They allow samus to bypass some collision detection.

Here are a few oddity demos that use the game genie codes. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4172/KraidShortcut.fcm - Wrong way door glitch to Kraid http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4173/toobad.fcm - Ice beam shortcut from Norfair elevator - too bad it's impossible to door glitch here. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4174/hatchcreate.fcm - The interesting but utterly useless Door Creation glitch.

That's why it would be ideal to get the Wrong Way Door trick to work to bypass the missile hatch instead of having to door glitch down to Kraid.

If you can get to Kraid without the Missiles in a relatively fast manner, that trick should be used in the Any % run. It's very possible to kill Kraid without the ice beam, and it would save time running to get the missile pack next to the Norfair elevator at the beginning of the game. After Kraid, you can just get the Ice beam before going to Tourian.

I knew about the Brinstar -> Norfair thing, but unfortunately it's impossible to go up and get the ice beam right after getting the missiles. That would be really nice. You can't do it since the wall in the elevator room is only 1 brick thick. I was trying memory watches one time, and Samus's position and page number are very easy to find. I can't tell you what they are off the top of my head though.

My question is, what exactly happens to Samus before she re-appears back at the bottom of the screen? If you escape from the wall before then, you can still scroll the screen and get hit by stuff. I have reason to believe that Samus becomes invisible in some form but is still subject to the collision detection on the current page. Here are some GG cheat codes that I use to explore wall glitches: SSAEAI EEXTTY KAPGEI - Forgot what these do individually, but they allow space jumping, ignore collision while jumping, and allow morph ball to wiggle through floors. You can use these to see which rooms scroll vertically and horizontally, and explore some freaky secret worlds. ALLGKP - Gives you Narpa's Sword in the middle of the game if you don't have it enabled, but you can't turn it off again. Edit: Hmm, I think I just found something interesting. If you use these codes, you can jump inside of a wall and make a door take you to the room on the other side of the screen. If there's a way to give you just the slightest little sideways boost when inside a wall, I think this could be possible to perform. If this were possible, you could bypass the red door in Kraid and go straight for the boss, skipping the missile tank.

There are lots of movies on this site already which avoid a specific glitch to be more entertaining, and even some movies which avoid using a glitch in certain circumstances but use them in other places. I'm reminded of the Link to the Past movie, which uses wobbling to walk faster and over pits but not through walls.

This was a test run, I was only looking for solutions. Once I found them, I'd make another movie with frame precision and better optimization of junk blocks. I imagined that once I hit the point where I could no longer do this, I'd try to clear the levels with 2 or more combos as necessary. But I was really hoping that I'd get farther than level 4.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4141/cad_drmario_testrun.fcm I recently thought of an interesting way to play Dr. Mario: Try to clear the entire level with a single combo. I tried it out, and with a lot of effort, I was able to beat the first four levels (0-3) like this. Not only that, but, in my opinion, it looks amazing. I think an extended movie of this type of playing would be very publishable. Unfortunately because of this game's lack of luck manipulation, I got an impossible setup on level 4 - I could only get rid of 9 of the viruses in one go (it was mostly due to the bad pill sequence, though). Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. I might restart in hopes of getting better luck, but... dang, that was a lot of work. Anyway, I thought this would be fun to show off.

I'm referring to using the morph jump instead of freezing the enemy and waiting for an eternity for it to unfreeze.

So today I was watching the Any % run again, and afterwards I looked at the Metroid tricks page. I had to wonder why the movie didn't do this: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4110/faster_boss_skip.fcm

I want to see a Mario and RPG crossed, but not the way they've been doing it with the Mario RPG series. I'm imagining something with classic sidescrolling gameplay, but the entire world is interconnected and you have to run from area to area to get around. And, in the style of Mario, make the world HUGE with about one hundred "levels".
